Breast Cancer
Tumblr media
Introduction
Breast cancer, a multifaceted and prevalent disease, poses a significant health challenge globally, transcending gender lines with its potential impact. Characterized by the abnormal proliferation of cells within breast tissue, breast cancer’s complex etiology remains an area of intense study and concern. Despite notable advancements in medical science and increased awareness, it continues to be a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. This comprehensive discussion aims to delve into the intricacies of breast cancer, encompassing its causes, risk factors, prevention strategies, diagnostic modalities, treatment options, and the evolving landscape of supportive care.
Causes and Risk Factors
Tumblr media
Understanding the underlying causes and risk factors associated with breast cancer is paramount in developing effective prevention and management strategies. While the precise etiology of breast cancer remains elusive, various genetic, hormonal, environmental, and lifestyle factors contribute to its onset and progression. Genetic predispositions, such as mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, significantly elevate the risk of developing breast cancer. Additionally, hormonal influences, including early onset of menstruation, late menopause, and hormone replacement therapy, play a crucial role in disease pathogenesis. Lifestyle factors such as excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, lack of physical activity, and exposure to environmental carcinogens further augment the risk profile.
Preventive Measures
Tumblr media
Empowering individuals with knowledge about preventive measures is essential in mitigating the burden of breast cancer. Promoting regular breast self-examinations, clinical breast examinations, and mammographic screenings facilitates early detection and intervention. Emphasizing lifestyle modifications, including maintaining a healthy weight, adopting a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, limiting alcohol intake, and engaging in regular physical activity, can reduce the risk of breast cancer. For individuals with a heightened risk due to genetic predispositions or familial history, prophylactic surgeries, such as mastectomy or oophorectomy, and chemo preventive agents offer viable preventive options.
Diagnostic Modalities
Tumblr media
Advances in diagnostic modalities have revolutionized the early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer, enabling prompt initiation of treatment and improved clinical outcomes. Mammography remains the cornerstone of breast cancer screening, capable of detecting abnormalities such as microcalcifications, masses, or architectural distortions. Complementary imaging techniques, including ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and molecular breast imaging (MBI), enhance diagnostic accuracy, particularly in women with dense breast tissue or high-risk profiles. Biopsy procedures, such as core needle biopsy or surgical excision, facilitate histopathological examination, enabling precise diagnosis and classification of breast lesions.
Treatment Options
Tumblr media
Tailoring treatment strategies to individual patient characteristics and disease parameters is essential in optimizing therapeutic outcomes in breast cancer. The treatment landscape encompasses a multidisciplinary approach, integrating surgical, medical, and radiation oncology interventions. Surgical options range from breast-conserving surgeries, such as lumpectomy or segmental mastectomy, to radical procedures like total mastectomy or modified radical mastectomy, depending on tumor size, location, and extent of spread. Adjuvant therapies, including chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy, aim to eradicate residual disease, prevent recurrence, and improve overall survival. Radiation therapy, administered either postoperatively or as a primary modality in selected cases, targets residual tumor cells, minimizing locoregional recurrence rates.
Supportive Care and Survivorship
Tumblr media
Recognizing the holistic needs of breast cancer patients and survivors is integral in promoting comprehensive care and ensuring optimal quality of life. Supportive care interventions, including symptom management, psychosocial support, nutritional counseling, and rehabilitation services, address the multifaceted challenges associated with cancer diagnosis and treatment. Survivorship programs, focusing on survivorship care planning, surveillance for recurrence, long-term monitoring of treatment-related complications, and health promotion initiatives, facilitate the transition from active treatment to survivorship. Engaging patients and caregivers in survivorship care planning fosters empowerment, resilience, and a sense of agency in navigating the post-treatment phase.
Conclusion
In conclusion, breast cancer represents a formidable health challenge with profound implications for affected individuals, families, and communities worldwide. While significant strides have been made in understanding its pathophysiology, enhancing diagnostic capabilities, and expanding treatment options, concerted efforts are warranted to address existing gaps in prevention, early detection, and access to care. By fostering collaborative partnerships among stakeholders, advocating for evidence-based interventions, and promoting health equity, we can strive towards a future where breast cancer incidence and mortality rates are substantially reduced. Through continued innovation, education, and advocacy, we can transform the landscape of breast cancer care, offering hope, support, and healing to those impacted by this pervasive disease.

Just words!
I can't remember the age when I last felt lost, I know it was preteen. I'm 67 now, stumbling through capitalist medicine "treatments", a cancer that is going to end functioning. So far, it's been a two and a half year process, though in February, the negligence of the "wrong" treatment from Washington University and Barnes Jewish was solidified a bit (an under-statement).
The mentioned "treaters" did lots of testing before treating, even as a layman, I understood from numerous articles and publications at the NIH website that the treatments were not premium, But the pushed treatment was Keytruda, which works for HPV 16positive, the incentive was/is a billion dollar contract on one drug produced by Merck and it has demonstrated notable acceptable resolution rates for 16positive.
Treatment modality chosen for me was an obvious known error, done for revenue, obviously, perhaps as a possible a controlled, observed outcome substantiation.
I'm old school, I'm still amazed that at not one of the 9 medical institutions I've "visited" over the past nearly three years, NOT ONE has displayed the Hippocratic Oath, though I've seen lots of crosses coupled to Thumper purveyors. I've only experienced a handful of medical "professionals" that are more concerned about effective care, rather than profits.
In a week, neurology is going to begin their endeavors, perhaps they will lead to a few more years for my daughter and I to continue our bonding that started at her birth. Depending on where things stand, I can have either several months, a year or, if fortunate, perhaps two years. From my reading and comprehension, I'm expecting no longer than perhaps another 15 months. Everyone one have a great day :)

The father of a batchmate in high school is a patient of mine. He initially presented with stage 3 disease but eventually progressed to stage 4 after combined modality treatment for lung cancer. Unfortunately, the family cannot afford frontline immunotherapy and so we were left with limited options.
He visited me after one of his sessions. He asked me how many days he has left.
I was taken aback. Around five minutes of silence. I was too silent for words. Oblivious and hesitant for the truth.
I then gave him numbers based on clinical trials. Who am I to play God though?
I am reminded of how beatiful yet fleeting life is-- similar to these cherry blossoms. I still feel blessed to be able to touch the lives of people on their final days-- beautiful and fleeting at the same time.

Cervical Cancer: Understanding the Disease, Prevention, and Treatment
Tumblr media
Introduction:
Cervical cancer is a significant health concern affecting women worldwide. It is a type of cancer that develops in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus. In this blog, we will explore the key aspects of cervical cancer, including its causes, risk factors, prevention strategies, early detection methods, and treatment options.
Causes and Risk Factors:
The primary cause of cervical cancer is persistent infection with high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection. Other risk factors include smoking, a weakened immune system, long-term use of oral contraceptives, multiple sexual partners, and a history of sexually transmitted infections. Understanding these risk factors can help individuals make informed choices to reduce their chances of developing cervical cancer.
Prevention Strategies:
Prevention is key when it comes to cervical cancer. Vaccination against HPV is a crucial preventive measure and is recommended for both males and females before they become sexually active. Regular cervical cancer screenings, such as Pap tests and HPV tests, are vital for early detection and intervention. Practising safe sex, maintaining good sexual health, and quitting smoking are additional preventive strategies that can significantly reduce the risk of developing cervical cancer.
Early Detection and Screening:
Regular cervical cancer screenings are essential for early detection and treatment. Pap tests, also known as Pap smears, involve collecting cells from the cervix and examining them for abnormal changes. HPV tests detect the presence of high-risk HPV strains in cervical cells. These screenings can identify precancerous changes or early-stage cervical cancer when it is most treatable.
Treatment Options:
The choice of treatment for cervical cancer depends on various factors, such as the stage of cancer, the individual's age, and overall health. Treatment options may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of these modalities. Surgery aims to remove the cancerous tissue, while radiation therapy uses high-energy X-rays to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy employs drugs to destroy cancer cells or stop their growth. The treatment plan is personalised to each individual's unique situation and is determined by a team of healthcare professionals specialising in gynecologic oncology.
Conclusion:
Cervical cancer is a preventable and treatable disease when detected early. Understanding the causes, risk factors, and preventive strategies are crucial steps in reducing the incidence of cervical cancer. Regular screenings and vaccinations are fundamental in early detection and intervention. If diagnosed, various treatment options are available to manage the disease effectively. By raising awareness, promoting preventive measures, and encouraging regular screenings, we can strive towards a future where cervical cancer becomes a rarity. Together, we can make a significant impact in the fight against cervical cancer and improve women's health worldwide.

FACT NUMBER ONE because I will be disowned from the profession unless I mention this
Radiographers =/= Radiologists!
Radiographer (UK) = person trained up to BSc degree level and often above, who can choose to specialise in a particular field. Radiographers can become involved in / perform basic or advanced procedures depending on skill level and training, or can train to interpret radiological images for diagnosis. Then there's a whole different branch of Radiography devoted to planning treatment & blasting cancers with radiation! I believe rads in the USA aren't trained to the same level and don't require so many qualifications/do as much, but correct me if I'm wrong!
Radiologist = qualified doctors who specialise in interpreting radiological images and performing procedures that require the use of radiography - e.g., inserting IVC filters, unfreezing shoulder joints with fluoro, CT biopsy, a million more...
So, if you have imaging done, you are more likely but not guaranteed to be in the room with a Radiographer, not a Radiologist! But if you have an interventional procedure using certain imaging modalities, the Radiologist is more likely to be leading the procedure with the Radiographer assisting! Buuuuuuut more and more Radiographers are becoming Advanced Practitioners in stuff like........ PPCIs for STEMI treatment, and doing the whole procedure themselves, so this isn't a guarantee!

Salivary Gland Tumor: Understanding the Complexity of a Rare Neoplasm
Salivary gland tumors are relatively uncommon and can present unique challenges due to the complexity of the salivary gland system. These tumors can be benign or malignant and may occur in various locations within the glands. Understanding the nature of salivary gland tumors, their diagnosis, treatment options, and potential outcomes is crucial for patients, healthcare providers, and caregivers. In this article, we will explore the world of salivary gland tumors, shedding light on their characteristics, diagnostic approaches, treatment modalities, and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in managing these neoplasms.
1. Types of Salivary Gland Tumors
Salivary gland tumors are classified into several types based on their cellular makeup. The two main categories are benign (non-cancerous) and malignant (cancerous) tumors. Benign tumors include pleomorphic adenomas and Warthin’s tumors, while malignant tumors encompass mucoepidermoid carcinoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma, and acinic cell carcinoma, among others.
2. Risk Factors
The exact cause of salivary gland tumors remains largely unknown, but certain risk factors may increase the likelihood of their development. These factors include older age, exposure to radiation, certain genetic conditions, and previous history of salivary gland tumors.
3. Signs and Symptoms
Salivary gland tumors may present with various signs and symptoms, depending on their location and size. Common indications include a painless lump or swelling in the face or neck, facial weakness, difficulty swallowing, and persistent pain or discomfort.
4. Diagnostic Approaches
Diagnosing salivary gland tumors involves a combination of clinical assessment, imaging tests (ultrasound, MRI, CT scans), and a biopsy. A fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy is commonly used to obtain a tissue sample for examination under a microscope, helping to determine the tumor’s nature.
5. Treatment Options
The treatment approach for salivary gland tumors depends on several factors, including the tumor’s type, grade, location, and stage. Surgical removal is the primary treatment for both benign and malignant tumors. In some cases, radiation therapy or chemotherapy may be used in conjunction with surgery.
6. Surgical Considerations
Surgery for salivary gland tumors aims to remove the tumor while preserving essential structures and functions, such as facial nerve function and saliva production. In some cases, the surgeon may need to remove part or all of the affected gland to achieve complete tumor excision.
7. Multidisciplinary Care
Due to the complexity of salivary gland tumors, a multidisciplinary approach involving various medical specialists is essential. This team may include surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, and supportive care providers, all collaborating to tailor the best treatment plan for each patient.
8. Prognosis and Recurrence
The prognosis for salivary gland tumors varies depending on several factors, such as the tumor’s type, grade, and stage at the time of diagnosis. Benign tumors generally have an excellent prognosis, while the prognosis for malignant tumors depends on their behavior and the success of treatment. Regular follow-up appointments are crucial for monitoring any signs of recurrence.
9. Coping and Support
A diagnosis of a salivary gland tumor can be emotionally challenging for patients and their families. Seeking emotional support from friends, family, and support groups can play a significant role in coping with the journey ahead.
10. Ongoing Research and Advances
Ongoing research and advancements in oncology contribute to improved diagnostic techniques and treatment options for salivary gland tumors. Staying informed about the latest developments can empower patients and healthcare providers alike.

2. Malaria:
Malaria, caused by parasites transmitted through infected mosquitoes, remains a significant global health concern. It primarily affects tropical and subtropical regions, causing over 400,000 deaths annually. Efforts to control malaria include mosquito control, bed nets, and antimalarial drugs, yet challenges such as drug resistance and climate change persist.
3. Tuberculosis (TB):
Tuberculosis is an airborne bacterial infection that mainly affects the lungs but can spread to other parts of the body. With over 1.4 million deaths in 2019, TB remains a formidable threat, particularly in impoverished and densely populated areas. Multidrug-resistant TB strains pose additional challenges to treatment and eradication.
4. Ebola Virus Disease:
Ebola gained global attention due to its rapid spread and high mortality rate during outbreaks. The virus causes severe bleeding, organ failure, and death. While outbreaks are sporadic, they have proven devastating, requiring swift containment efforts and international collaboration to prevent further loss of life.
5. Cancer:
Cancer encompasses a range of diseases characterized by uncontrolled cell growth. It is a leading cause of death worldwide, with variations in incidence and mortality rates depending on the type of cancer and region. Advances in early detection, treatment modalities, and personalized medicine are crucial in the ongoing battle against cancer.
6. Cardiovascular Diseases:
Cardiovascular diseases, including heart disease and stroke, collectively account for the highest number of deaths globally. Risk factors such as unhealthy diets, lack of physical activity, smoking, and high blood pressure contribute to their prevalence. Public health campaigns promoting heart-healthy lifestyles and access to quality healthcare play a vital role in reducing the burden of these diseases.
Conclusion:
While medical progress has enabled us to better understand, prevent, and treat many diseases, the six mentioned above continue to pose significant challenges to global health. Effective strategies, international cooperation, and ongoing research are essential in addressing these dangerous diseases and minimizing their impact on individuals and communities around the world.

This! Chronic fatigue syndrome is kind of a misnomer, and "myalgic encephalomyelitis" is a huge mouthful. I've seen some community renaming suggestions focusing on post-exertional malaise as a primary symptom, but none of them have caught on.
Also, if a doctor tells you that "exercise" can help either, RUN (if you can. I'm being a bit hypocritical bc my doc says safe levels of exertion can help but has never once forced it on me and she's the only person in the area who has ever actually listened to me and provided the care I need).
"Graded exercise therapy" is an outdated treatment modality for chronic fatigue syndrome that has been proven to make people significantly, sometimes permanently worse. I don't mean to fearmonger, but severe chronic fatigue syndrome has been likened to late stage AIDS and terminal cancer in terms of how it impacts quality of life and health prognosis. If you have a mild case, you MAY be able to find a small area below the unsafe exertion threshold which doesn't make you worse, but outside of extenuating circumstances, it's rarely worth the risk.
It's best to take breaks whenever needed, rest, use mobility aids, and generally prioritize avoiding flare-ups and triggering post-exertional malaise.
Well obviously I can’t have chronic fatigue, that’s a real problem for real disabled people that’s diagnosed by doctors probably. Clearly I just have some sort of perpetual exhaustion issue, that is also almost certainly my fault somehow
