Day Nine💖
(reminder that if anybody wants me to stop sending these asks at any time, just tell me and I will stop!)
what is the thing that you are the most passionate about in life and why? what sparked your interest in it? is their a goal with it you want to reach, and are you actively working on your passion, or is it just something you know a lot about?
It should be Jesus but I don’t think it is, not perfectly, not all the time. What I tell myself and others it is, most of the time, is “storytelling.” But what I think it actually is (most of the time, but not when I’m in the Spirit) is self-glorification and wanting to be famous.
So there’s the triple-nature. What I should be passionate about, what I want to be passionate about, what I am passionate about underneath it all. But only one of those things is going to actually endure, and it’s “what I should be passionate about.”
Anyway.
What sparked my interest in storytelling was a combo of factors, but I remember the exact moment it came together clearly. I was getting ready for church and I’d been up all night (because at this point in my life I was like 19 and having trouble sleeping was a thing.) And I was trying to decide what to do with my life. I had interest in animated movies and in counseling but I didn’t know what to go to college for, so I was taking a gap year.
And as I was getting ready for church my draft table had the “Lilo & Stitch: Collected Stories From the Film’s Creators” book open on it, and I was listening to a worship playlist in my room and thinking about movies, and thinking about telling some of the kids I worked with in student ministries what made Lilo & Stitch kind of a Gospel story and how I could tell that to them convincingly.
Tumblr media
(This is not my picture, but the book looks like this.)
It was open to the producer’s foreword. And this song came on my playlist:
youtube
Which is about how God is the inventor and producer behind everything. It’s Tyler Joseph and Travis Whittaker. But I wasn’t familiar with this song yet, so I thought the lyrics were saying “You’re the author, the producer, the inventor of the scene.” It’s not, it’s “inventor of the seed,” but whatever, same principle.
Then like I was having some kind of dramatic realization, the vague idea that all of life was a movie God made, and the main point was Himself, and all man-made stories that were good had nuggets of that in them, clicked together. I had never thought of reality that way before.
And ll through that morning’s service and yammering to my mother at lunch afterward, I was just thinking thinking thinking about it. About how, in movies, the setting tells the story as much as the characters and events tell the story. (Stitch starts out in vast outer space where all the ships look vaguely like fish—then the scene transitions to a small, folksy town with a local feel, but still plenty of fish imagery.) And how, in God’s “movie,” the plants and the way they work tell the story of the Gospel. Seeds, growth, death, rebirth. How the seasons do the same thing. How the animals do the same thing—the freakin caterpillar is a crawling worm, then goes into a kind of death for a period of time, then comes out a new creation.
The art of storytelling, settings, characters, narrative, and all, is just a hobbled-together copy of how God has been communicating from the dawn of time.
And my brain was racing, and I remember thinking about the idea that Christians are supposed to be “little Christs.” Well, if He was THE storyteller who told His story to show us Himself, then what better could I do than be a little storyteller who showed people Him, too? Not just with my career and my writing and art, but with the way I obeyed Him with my life, obviously.
But that’s how I decided what to go to school for. And that’s what got me into the industry I’m in now.
All that to say, if there’s anything that is actually accurate about reality and God in my little “realization” or philosophy, it’s only because God showed it to me, not because I came up with it myself. And if it’s not accurate, He didn’t show it to me, I made it up and heaven help me. But so far I think He did show it to me, so I keep trying to tell stories without letting that become an idol.

Like already mentioned in previous posts, I first made these ships and characters almost 10 years ago at this point, but they(at least the next-gens) meant so much to me at the time and they still do hold a small part of my heart now. This post is different from what I usually post, but y'all are just gonna have to deal with it.
So recently, I decided that I hated the name I go by, and anyways I've been trying out new names recently. I would really appreciate anyone who has suggestions. I've currently started going by Will as a placeholder, and I feel that fits me pretty well and it has a lot of options for puns, but idk. I've been looking at masc leaning names, and I like ones that are either more old fashioned names, nature themed names, double names, names that sound like they belong to a dog, or names that just sound like they should be pronounced in a southern accent. Some names I've liked are Beckett, Forrest, Hunter, Wyatt, Whittaker, Wiley, Ringo, Newton, Scout, Huckleberry, Duke, Sawyer, Travis, Waylon, Rhett, and Everett.

Smokey brand Movie Reviews: Pack Mentality
With all the praise that Soul was getting for it’s gorgeous animation and brilliant narrative, half of which i would agree with, there were rumblings of it being the absolute favorite for the animation Oscar this year, And then a challenger appeared over on the Apple TV upstart; Wolfwalkers. It was this beautifully animated, especially considering it’s hand-drawn, a lost art in this age of Pixar and Dreamworks. After seeing a preview, i was instantly smitten. I had to see this film. I had to know if it was as great as everyone said.
The Good
Yo, this film is absolutely stunning! Seriously, it’s easily the best looking movie I've seen all year. Soul is an exceedingly close second but the fact that all of this is hand-drawn gives it that edge. I’m an Eighties kid so stuff like stop motion animation, practical effects, and hand-drawn animation will always carry more weight with me because i grew up with all of it. It’s fast becoming a lost art and I'm glad that there is a studio out there still willing to give this type of animation a shot. Like, holy sh*t, that way the Wolfwalkers see the world? are you kidding me??
I just gushed about the animation, itself, but i have to make note of the actual aesthetic. I love this type of stylized art. It reminds me of that old school, Cartoon Cartoon-esque, look. I’m talking Gendy and MacKracken. It looks like something completely different from the domination of that Cal Arts style from the past decade, a complete breath of fresh air. I love when content comes through, completely unique unto itself, but absolutely outstanding, nonetheless.
Tomm Moore is the director of this thing and writer of this thing. It’s got his stink all over it, which makes since, since he was the person who brought us The Secret of Kells. That film, too was absolutely stunning and played out like nothing else released that year. Tomm reminds be a lot of Travis Knight, the cat who runs Laika and makes all their stop-motion pictures. I adore the fact hat these studios are keeping the old styles alive while simultaneously delivering some of the best animation content out there.
I really like the plot to this flick, man. It’s kind of your run-of-the-mill, man versus nature, odd couple pairing, story but it’s told with such passion and reverence. This isn’t Pocahontas or Ferngully. y can tell the message is there but it’s definitely a distinct narrative crafted by Moore, one that he has been developing for a few years. You definitely feel that dedication in this flick and its all the better for it.
The music in this film is as much a character as anyone else. My, goodness, do these songs cue your emotions. Music and animation often go hand-in-hand, more so than live action films, so you absolutely need that soundtrack to hit in just the right way. The once created for Wolfwalkers is near perfect for the content. All of these Celtic rhythms and percussion are divinity for the ears.
As this is an Irish production, I’m nowhere near as well versed in this cast as i am with US productions, but Eva Whittaker and Honor Kneafsey are outstanding as the two leads,  Mebh Og MacTire and Robyn Goodfellowe. Their scenes together are amazing and the chemistry shared is surprisingly genuine. Sean Ban also comes through and delivers a commanding, yet, caring performance as Robyn's stubbornly overprotective father, Bill Goodfellowe and the horrifying cruel antagonist, Oliver Cromwell, is given life by Simon McBurney. Maria Doyle also makes an appearance as Mebh’s mother, Moll MacTire. It’s a limited one but has incredibly impact on the overall plot.
The pace of this movie is pretty nice. It moves smoothly, getting you where you need to be with a gentle push. There is no fat around this story so it’s pretty streamlined. That focus makes for a properly engaging watch and a rather entertaining one to boot.
The Bad
This thing is properly animated. While i think this is wonderful, it will definitely turn off older people and cats who think animation is for kids. Cartoons are for kids and they happen to be animated. This is a fantasy tale steeped in Irish folklore that just happens to be animated. It has to be animated. The way this thing pays out, there’s no way it could be live action or CG. Even so, the very fact that it is animated will limit the audience willing to give it a chance an that is a crying shame.
This thing is an exclusive to Apple TV. I don’t know anyone who has Apple TV and the fact that it’s got such a tiny platform to call home, really limits the amount of exposure this film is going to get. It’s f*cked up because it is, arguably, the best animated movie released this year. Like, i loved Soul because it spoke directly to the blackness in me but, as a film, as a creative endeavor born from pure creativity? Wolfwalkers craps all over Soul. I loved both of these films but the artist in me demands that Wolfwalkers be given the respect and exposure it so rightfully deserves. That ain’t happening on Apple TV.
The Verdict
I adore this film. Absolutely love it. Celtic mythology is my third favorite after Egyptian and Greek so seeing it brought to screen so vividly was a true experience. Celtic myth never gets the shine it deserves. I am grateful for Moore and his Cartoon Saloon are making incredible works and Wolfwalkers is another in a small but acclaimed library. Moore also brought us The Secret of the Kells and Song of the Sea, both excellent in their own right. Wolfwalkers definitely continues that pedigree with gorgeous visuals, a story filed with heart and emotion, outstanding performances, particularly form the two leads, and a brilliant vision of a world steeped in Celtic lore.

11/11/11 Tag
It’s been a while since I did one of these so thanks for tagging, @dreamingofstarslight!! Rules: answer eleven questions, ask eleven questions and tag eleven people. Most answers are for my wip How to Save the World in 12 Easy Steps.
1. Do you have any pets in you WIP(s)??
Tetra has a black and tan Pomeranian named Arbuckle who we love and adore. Marley has a fluffy white Persian cat named Whittaker in keeping with her supervillain persona
2. How many story names have you gone through so far?
Just this one ! I came up with this wip on a whim last summer and it’s honestly grown so much but the name hasn’t changed.
3. Are there any important bodies of water in your story??
Muttonchop’s downtown financial district is bordered by Lake Emerson. It’s based off Lake Michigan, so really big and really scenic. Currently home to the bloated corpse of a space whale (less scenic).
4. Describe an oc with ten or less words
Marley recently described Khep as ‘11 million children stacked in a trench coat’.
5. What was the inspo behind your story’s name?
It’s the reused name of an abandoned superhero wip?? but it’s fun and quirky and fits the whole blasé-in-the-face-of-chaos-and-certain-doom mood really well. It’s not super descriptive because there’s no Saving going on at the moment but we’ll get there sooner or later.
6. What’s the most you’ve written in one day?
I don’t write fast but one time I wrote 15 screenplay pages of high-octane superhero action-comedy so I thought that was pretty good (around 3000 words i think?). Ended up having to cut 3 pages though.
7. Are there any couples in your story that you find really cute??
Marley and Jaidyn have a cute platonic vitriolic buds thing going on. And of course, Arbuckle and Whittaker, who are the floffiest best pals.
8. Do any of your oc’s have allergies?
I think the last time I wrote allergies was an abandoned paranormal romance parody thing where Travis the unicorn vomited rainbows because he ate peanut butter by accident.
9. Is there any lgbt+ rep in your story?
I never feel I have proper rep in this or any of my wips because I generally don’t write relationship drama?? If it’s there, it’s not that important in the grand scheme of things. But still, Jaidyn is aro, Tetra is ace, Marley is bi. Khep is non-binary.
10. Do any of your oc’s have tattoos?
Tetra has a living tattoo on her neck that’s programmed to always points home and Marley’s been marked by a demon.
11. What’s your favourite friend pairing trope?
Any sort of Fool and Straight Man duo where the fool is still acting like a functional, real person and isn’t out to be The Most Annoying Idiot!!
11 new questions!!
Have you had to change any ocs names?
What are your ocs favorite foods?
Describe the color scheme of your wip
If you could have one ocs powers or skills, who would you pick and why
Which oc do you aspire to be most like?
Which oc would you most definitely *not* want to be like?
What’s your favorite oc you’ve come across on writeblr?
Traditional or self-publishing?
What’s the most important thing you’ve learned on writeblr?
What’s one thing you’ve learned about yourself through writing?
What book/movie/tv show/song/video game/artist/WHATEVER inspires you the most?
Tagging: @esoteric-eclectic-eccentric @eyelessfatdragon @erethesilverking @chaosandtrickery @maple-writes @consultingcinnamon @klywrites @jynecca @mysterysiria @unwriter-sc @glacizata and ANYONE ELSE WHO WANTS TO DO THIS!!
