Freshmen Week for any freshman is a big moment in their life, especially if you are a Thomasian Freshman. But what made this year’s Freshmen Week a favorable one for me is that it is my first time covering it – meaning to say that I am included for the weeks of festivities but not as a freshie (Thomasian nickname for the freshmen students) but as a photographer.

For my freshman year in the University of Santo Tomas (UST), I joined multiple organizations’ photography department. That one organization that I stood up with and I am still staying with until now which is my sophomore year is Tomasino Web. This post is not for me to layout all that has happened within this year’s Freshmen Week, but this is to show you guys some visuals that I have took within the week of festivities. This due to the fact that I am very grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the media team, plus due to this I got to practice videography.

Travel Diary | Byaheng Norte | Ifugao, Bontoc, Sagada and Baguio

“I was tucked in our velvety soft comforters as I enjoy the cold wind breezing in our room’s open window. I couldn’t remember any of my dreams that night but I felt like I had a lot. It was one of the best deep sleeps I had in awhile”

This was the second road trip I had with my grand parents. (First one was in La Union. Click ME for the blog post) I love travelling with them because we both enjoy almost the same things. They’re fun and cool and let us do whatever we want to do.

My Abuelo and Abuela were scheduled to visit some relatives in Mountain Province. I, together with the B and my 2 uncles tagged along for the adventure. We left Manila at around 9:30 in the evening and arrived in Mountain Province after almost 11 hours of travelling.

Before reaching our main destination, we stopped at one of the viewing decks for Banaue Rice Terraces. The famous Hagdang-hagdan palayan that we only see in our elementary text books was now in front of us in real life! It looks very magnificent tho it makes us sad to see that there are already a lot of houses being built in and around it.  

From Ifugao, it was another 45 minutes travel time before finally reaching Bontoc. I couldn’t imagine seeing a whole new community living mountains away from the metro. It felt like the whole rural place was like Riverdale where in they have their own world and life on their own.

Life in Bontoc is very simple. They don’t have shopping malls or any of our favorite fast food places. They only patronize their own local shops, mini bars and restaurants. Just like any other Filipinos, they do love to sing and drink together with their barkadas but to my surprise they still strictly follow the 10PM curfew.

HOW TO GET TO BONTOC, MOUNTAIN PROVINCE:

1st Option via commute:

Take Coda lines that is bound to SAGADA (It will pass through Bontoc and you can alight there) (Coda lines is located along Cubao, EDSA in front of 5 star) (Fare is at 760/each regular - 980php/each deluxe) (You may opt to book online via biyaheroes.com but note that service fees apply)

Other notes to consider:

2 stop overs

If you will alight Bontoc fare is at 725php/each regular and 935php/each deluxe

Available schedule are at 8:00pm, 9:00pm and 10:00pm DAILY

Online booking should be done 2 days before your travel time. Walk ins are also an option but make sure to go there an hour before to secure a slot.

2nd Option via commute:

Take Victory Liner that is bound to Baguio (click ME to check the fare and schedules available)

From Baguio take the Rising Sun liner bound to Bontoc

Other notes to consider:

2 stop overs

Travel time from Baguio to Bontoc is around 5-6 hours

Expect that there are no fancy hotels in Bontoc. We stayed at an old hotel that offers 800php a night, for 4 people. The hotel is not maintained yet it was clean. Globe reception can also be a little difficult inside their establishments. It’s also very strange that there are a lot of stray dogs around. I heard horrible rumors that locals there love to eat dogs too. :( It’s a disturbing culture I will never understand. Just the thought of it makes me sick and angry. 

After 3 nights in Bontoc we planned to stay another night in Baguio before heading back home. Sagada was just 20 minutes away from Bontoc so we decided to eat brunch there first. Temperature was 3x colder up there. Too bad we hadn’t have enough time to check out their tourist spots because all attractions require at least 30 minutes to an hour trekking time. 

The cold wind and rain collide as we bravely travel the crazy zig-zag path to Baguio. The air was covered in thick fog but thankfully we arrived safely after 6 hours travel time. 

We stayed at City lights hotel. It was strategically located a few blocks away from the famous Session Road. We ate dinner at Rose Bowl (authentic Chinese restaurant) then the B and I decided to take a stroll down their night market. I was able to finally try their famous Strawberry Taho (30php/cup) (It was gooood but I didn’t finish the whole cup ; thinking I might get diabetes in an instant lol)

We also scored a few good deals in their Ukay-ukay. I found a nice red sweater for Bri that only cost 30php! Imagine that! We head home at around 10 or 11pm to finally call it a night.

We went to Strawberry Farm, SM and we ate at a Steakhouse the follow day before heading home. I wish we had more time to visit all the other beautiful places Baguio has to offer. Surely the B and I will go back soon!
