christenpress I made a commitment to travel to Africa to visit Grassroot soccer programs every 4 years because I hope that my presence and words can remind the coaches and participants that their work matters. And that people from across the globe are invested in the betterment of their lives, wellbeing, and health. And at the same time, these experiences give me a precious gift in the form of perspective: how the most important forces of life: joy, kindness, love are not bound by socio-economic status or achievement. They are your birth right, and often are felt while moving your body in sport or in dance, celebrating someone else, and in a sense of community belonging. Nobody understands that better than the beautiful people we got to spend the last 3 days with in Zambia.

Day 1- our first intervention was at a health facility in Lusaka. The program provides mental health resources for adolescents ages 10-18 living with HIV. Through play based learning and discussion, our coach helped us work through how to deal with increasing pressures to participate in risky behaviors.

christenpress Our second intervention was truly something special to witness. GRS is helping coaches get trained as Community Based Distributors that provide family planning services to their neighbors in need. With stigma around contraceptives and being sexually active, adolescents might be more comfortable going to someone they trust for these resources and tools. We saw a CBD open her home to young people from her community to provide them contraception. Not only does this increase use and ease of access, but also we witnessed how proud and impactful it can be to be a leader within the community working toward a better future.

christenpress For our last day and final intervention, ~40 GRS coaches from Lusaka came together to spend time with Tobin and me. We learned about the incredible work coaches are doing and participated in 4 different programs …and countless songs and dances. The GRS coaches are a big part of the magic of this organization. Change happens when you give young people (coaches are 18-24) from within these very communities the opportunity, resources and tools they need to uplift their communities themselves. They bring such joy, pride, and energy to each of the lessons- as they work toward a better future for themselves and their participants.

Every forum on the internet has a "Pop." Modern short-message platforms don't really give you the experience of being slowly stalked from thread to thread by a dude with more advice than he knows what to do with. When you wake up in the morning, he's there under the "Last Replied By" column. Every rambling post needs a coffee or two to get through, and you won't appreciate the effort it takes to pump out even a single one of them when your question is "why is my car on fire?"

His like is dying out, and will probably never return. All of the primitive big-company greedheads have decided that wading through several thousand word essays is not conducive to clicking on ads. And the topics are so rambly that they confuse modern artificial language models into serving up ads for chewing tobacco or witchcraft rather than the actual topic of the post (why my car is on fire.) Ultimately, "Pop" will always advocate doing some non-capitalist activity, like going to a junkyard, making your own parts from cork, or travelling back in time to win the approval of your father and never becoming condemned to walk this path, which also isn't a big starter with the Madison Avenue crowd.

My young-adult haunt was, of course, a car forum. It's gone now, swept into some kind of ultra-capitalist hellscape. MBAs littered it with ads, until all you could see of the actual content was a little tiny window in the middle. Naturally, everyone left. Everyone except for "Pop," who went down with the ship and presumably began preying on nubile co-eds in the woods shortly thereafter. And by preying, I mean "giving advice on how to properly clean the rotors in their distributors," whether they were in a position to receive that advice or not.

When I think about what the loss of these folks represents, I get a little bit wistful. All these "Pops" are losing their natural habitat, as McMansion suburbs get built on their property, pushing them further and further into the relatively unprofitable woods of ham radio and model train enthusiasm. Soon, though, they too will fall into the amorphous blob of corporate buy-everything, envy-thy-neighbour shopping mall socialization. And then who's gonna tell me the story of how they invented the flathead screw?

What WERE those superfluous aspects of Tonitrui historical culture?

Before the death of their own creator, tonitrui culture was as vibrant and varied in custom and belief as any other you see among humans. Most of the hunter-gatherer tribes worshiped seasonal gods, with each population attributing different names and characteristics to these figures.

For some the winter was kind, a god of slumber and rejuvenation, of making tight knots and steadfast bonds, of art and music and story. For others winter was a god of trials, of enduring punishment after punishment like a rain of whips, this god could be the sternest of them all, but yet remained a teacher in how it brought light to shadowed flaws and weakness. And while it is obvious the gods of summer would often be distributors of bounty and respite, sometimes this god would also be a devil of its own, raising fiery tempers, striking blight and drought, and sparking wars and murder.

Each season demanded its own sacrifice, ofttimes in fall it would be hair, in winter it would be food (especially rendered fat to be burned in intricate conflagrations), in spring it would be flowers plucked before they could fruit, and in summer it would be blood of the unborn and born both. But the whims of these gods could change, they might demand a more indulgent gift one year, or an entirely different sort the next.

Those that traveled a solitary and nomadic path as soothsayer were simultaneously adored and feared and hated, and rarely spent more than a few years with one tribe before fortune drove them on again. The most renowned of them were known to have great wars fought over them, or were bribed with all the material gifts that could be offered, but they were never harmed nor threatened, for the lie of a soothsayer was the greatest of curses.

As the coastal tribes transitioned into more sedentary and permanent villages which gave rise to agriculture and monarchism, their spiritualism calcified into finite forms. A myriad of interpretations and faces and names for the gods all informed by the specific culture of a tribe as well as their history and the lands they hunted were progressively funneled and congealed until but one absolute form remained. Of course bitter debates and battles were raged over the particular aspects, but once the custom of kings began, the ever changing became shackled to the earth. It was known that each god had one name and two heads, one of ill and one of fortune, and when they walked upon the land, the kingdom must attract the attention of the glad countenance, and distract the cruel face so it looked away. Much was said on the folly of dividing the gods in this way, that the cruel aspects were just as vital as the supposedly kind, that it would make the kingdom weak if it was never tested with raging wildfires nor floods nor plague.

When their creator came to walk among them, belief in the divine quartet could hardly stand up to miracles made flesh. This centralized religion was quickly shattered, and the result was a cultural maelstrom, with the god-king standing within the center. After the murder of the tonitrui creator, there was a spiritual void. The very idea of worship became distasteful after such betrayal and grief, and for most it would have been hollow belief, and so the old gods became childrens stories, and spirits to sometimes wish to for luck, but little else.

Following this, tonitrui culture became far more imperialistic. Kings were gods unto themselves, their words infallible, their arms as long as the march of their soldiers. The remaining nomadic tribes in the southlands were eaten up by conquest, and a generations spanning war was held between the southern kingdom and the loose coalition of tribes in the north. After many years the kingdom won out and occupied the land, forcing its many customs upon the inhabitants and stomping down on the old beliefs, which were now seen as foolish heresy that must be replaced with complete obeisance and worship to the king. Seasonal sacrifices were replaced with taxes and military drafting, and belief in the quartet gods was limited to underground communities which met in secret, or the most isolated of northern tribes.

These three great shifts in tonitrui society progressively stunted the culture of its own people. Many customs were abandoned or stamped out alongside the gods, and only remain as sanitized vestiges, with little memory as to their original significance. Before tail docking became all but compulsory, marriage rites were taken by tying a couples tails together with an intricate knot that must be slowly unwound day by day for a week. Tail dancing or flagging similar to ribbon dancing was also commonplace, and some even had their tails broken and set in specific positions to indicate their role in society.

Horns, meanwhile, were always used as pedestals for artistic expression. The buds of children could be split down the middle to create the illusion of four horns as they grew, each one bearing its own prayer to a god of the quartet. They could be carved or notched or woven with thread between each horn to indicate social rank, or to display a number of feats such as how many lives a warrior had taken in battle, or how many children one had (by their nature tonitrui have a low birthrate, high infant mortality, and slow maturation, children aren't named until their first birthday, and fertility is seen as one of the most important aspects of ones role in society).

There were also snout flutes, made by carving holes through the nasal bone, and played through a series of snorts. Tonitrui are already predisposed to a number of nasal infections which can sometimes lead to flesh eating disease in coastal territories with high humidity, so this custom was thoroughly stamped out for fear of the necessary body modification exacerbating such a condition.

Monarchistic tonitrui culture is quite focused on preserving the body as a tool for society, either in its role as a soldier, for procreation, or production, all with the goal of keeping a healthy population for which to secure and expand its territory. As such there is a cultural preoccupation with cleanliness, nutrition, and general health, with a strong distaste for anything considered too indulgent or gratuitous. The body must be kept whole, for there is no veil between the physical and mental self, and when one harms their own body in any permanent or unnecessary way, they also alter their own nature. Scars and significant injuries are seen to fracture the wholeness of oneself, and can lead to unstable temperaments. These traits are only admired in soldiers, whose physical sacrifice to the state purifies any subsequent metaphysical harm. The body must be kept healthy specifically so that the monarchy can choose when it can be broken. Thus the oldest tonitrui tradition of sacrifice is perverted, stripped of its intrapersonal narrative.

Anatomy of a Dalek

A Dalek is primarily made from Dalekanium and polycarbide and is technically a cyborg. To understand how a Dalek is created, see How Do Daleks Become Daleks?

Some Daleks will have variations on the below, but these aspects of a Dalek's anatomy are broadly applicable to most.

The Dome (aka dome section, head section, head dome) is attached to the neck via a docking clamp.

Eyestalk (aka eyepiece, eye antenna, tele-eye, eye-stick, optical stalk, sensory antenna, eyeball unit). The eyestalk is attached to the dome via a lens attachment, sitting on a pivot in a cowl. The eye itself is known as an eyelens. The eyestalk is covered in multiple insulator discs to protect it from radiation.

Luminosity dischargers (aka headlamp, radiation valve, dome light, vocaliser light, sound disc). It's not quite known how or why the luminosity dischargers sync up with Dalek speech, but they could be energy compensators, translation units, safety valves to release excess energy, or just lights to indicate when a Dalek's speaking.

Neck (aka grating section, upper grating section). Attached to the weapons platform via another docking clamp, or 'catch'.

Neck rings support the neck grille.

Neck grille (aka audio receptor grill, sensor grille, sensor mesh, sensor grid louvres) cover the mutant Dalek within.

Weapons Platform (aka shoulder platform, shoulder section).

Slats (aka solar power collection slats, solar slats, solar cells, shoulder slats, armour slats, sensor plates) are effectively solar panels that absorb energy to power the Dalek.

Gunstick (aka radiation gun, gun-rod, ray-gun, exterminator, blast-gun, energy gun, Dalek neutraliser, neutraliser, beam distributor, Dalek beam gun, Dalek gun, ruby ray blaster). Sits on a balljoint, controlled by armament circuits. Can be set to non-lethal, causing temporary paralysis, but maximum settings can split atoms apart. Some Daleks deliberately reduce the power of their gunstick so that the beam burns away the central nervous system outside inwards, so victims die within 2-3 seconds in complete agony.

Manipulator arm (aka tactile arm, arm-stick). Usually sits on a balljoint. Attachments can be swapped out for various tools depending on the needs of the Dalek. Some attachments include the plunger, flamethrower, seismic detector, electrode unit, sieve, syringe, blow torch, cutting tool, another gunstick, or a claw, or basically anything they need.

Base Unit (aka travel unit). Contains the motive unit, the elevation unit, and thrusters.

Sense spheres (aka sensor globes, sensor arrays, bumps) can do pretty much whatever you want them to, including detecting emissions, monitoring the surrounding environment, and acting as self-destruct mechanisms. They can also function as sockets for cables and wires, and some say the sensor globes are capable of free flight, allowing them to provide remote battlefield intelligence.

Bumper (aka fender). Possibly containing proximal alert systems to detect other Daleks, but more likely just softening collisions.

let’s say you live in a society of autonomous worker collectives, some regional and some diffusely spread throughout the anarcho-realm. one of them is a federation of medical supply distributors and they have determined there’s a shortage of insulin. they have crunched the numbers and they recommend a couple thousand people from your region go work at the nearest insulin factory for 15 hours a week (nobody works more than that because fuck that lol)

labor cannot be coerced in this society so here is the question—what, outside of a wage or violence, could motivate you to willingly go work there?

Hygiene, Health and Hieroglyphs

Welcome, ladies, gents, and genderless horrors, to the 6 month anniversary of my blog! It is time to bore you all, so roll your sleeves up and get ready for the worst world building you've ever heard! (Yes, I had to expand the topic of discussion to these three because I found them to be extremely interlinked. And yes, when I say hieroglyphs, I mean runes. Yes, I just wanted my title to rhyme.)

Now, I will be referring to all diseases/meds in Triworld by relating them to the closest real-world equivalent. This is because you don't have the time to hear me explain the names of each disease and their history, and I don't have the brainpower to come up with names for everything.

With that, we start off on diseases! Because a world with magic is a whole world of additional agony to experience. Water from wells, rivers, or any form of unprocessed water body may be cursed, even if it doesn't seem to be off. Certain kinds of bacteria have evolved to target blossoming young mages, resulting in various unfortunate side effects (After all, we just love watching magic go wild). Don't even get me started on mana-suckers.

So: How do they deal with this? Firstly: Magic. Affinities for healing and warding are rare, but (in pre-modern times) almost every person with a scrap of magic in their veins will have a spell on hand to clear water of any virus or toxin. In every village, there would always be a person to bless any water on hand, especially if they resided near a cursed region.

What exactly are cursed regions, however? Below, you see the map with various areas highlighted.

These are areas where the water itself (be it from wells, rivers, or lakes) holds magical properties. In some regions, like the glade the Ko clan resides in, the water can restore and heal. However, other areas, such as Ceredell, you will find water can bring about hallucinations and psychosis. 

That is why most, if not all, travellers in those times pulled water from the moisture in the air. It was, at the time, one of the greatest drains on travellers, because it meant only those who had the magical capacity to perform that spell regularly could afford to wander, or be forced to risk cursed water. That was also why the great desert, Losaras, was an unexplored haven for species that did not need to drink water, like ghouls and vampires. 

However, that all changed with the invention of runes and enchantment magic by the elves. It meant that any person, even a non-mage, could stock up on water-clearing enchantments and go travel. It meant that a village could stake out a single well and enrune it, to clean it permanently. It saved millions of lives that would have otherwise been lost to cholera, mana-sucking viruses or curses.

Not long after, these runes further revolutionised society by enabling teleportation of resources. A city could build a teleportation rune obelisk beneath a lake, and receive an endless flow of water coming out of the obelisk's twin. It meant that even in the heart of the desert, a determined crew could populate a town. And much to the inhumans' disgust, they did.

Now, runic magic at that time (aka around 2600), was almost entirely controlled by elves. They had invented the technomancy, and they  were the distributors of it. What little human-made runes existed belonged to Ceredell, who had, out of pure necessity, come up with their own simple versions of the cleansing rune. The result was that the populations of Losaras and Ceredell burgeoned. (Of course, as those who have read Lich-Queen will know, this will turn out to be a mistake.)

Understanding of runic magic only truly came to the humans after the Runic wars began in 2800, when the elves were forced to share their enchanted weaponry or be complicit in the genocide of humanity. The origins of almost all modern runes was from war enchantments, but it has been quite a while since they performed such functions.

Now, understand that healing magic is an excruciating and difficult medium. Even in a world proliferated with magic, healers are often only available to the richest of the rich or the lucky few who happen to know a healing mage personally. Anyone without an affinity for it has no hope of learning the simplest of healing spells, and often can only brew up the mildest of ointments. The popularisation of healing runes meant that hedge witches, who previously had no ability to truly cure anything more serious than a wart, could stand a chance at saving a life.

I hear you ask: Why not use technology? Our world has medicine, why doesn't theirs? The thing you must understand about ancient Triworld is that it was almost completely ruled by the gods, many of whom used their incredible amounts of magic to control their subjects. Technology was a threat to them, and so they made an effort to extinguish it. The only species who could and would research magicless technology were the elves, whose goddess, Renise, could not care less for what her people did.

So it was that penicillin was only ever created in the year 5000, long after Ina had murdered the last goddess. So it was that the people of Triworld struggled by, with the not-help of great prayers to their gods, endless half-baked potions, and all the preventative care they could think of. And so it was that the Runic Wars were the first step to the freedom of Triworld from its godly shackles.

Surgeons took the red-hot fireswords and turned them to self-sterilising blades and cauterisers. Doctors fashioned basic microscopes and endoscopes out of reconnaissance enchantments. Nightsoil carriers turned their mass battle-porters into refuse-porters. The gods received less desperate prayers as people turned their futile efforts towards obtaining healing glyphs.

With that, we drag Triworld kicking and screaming into the era of the Godhuntress. Runes are increasingly commonplace, most people have access to potable water, and healing magic is no longer limited to the realm of high nobility. The gods fall, one by one. People, disillusioned, begin to carve out their own futures, abandoning the rites and faiths of their forefathers.

When Ina massacres the elves for not aiding her people, forcing the few living elves to go into hiding, she inadvertently opens up another niche for humanity to carve out: Technology. In the ruins of Sylvandor, humans discover the concept of vaccines, of antibiotics, of magic that needs no magic. Why the elves, whom all possessed some form of mana-using capacity, were working on such things, they did not know. They did not care either, taking it as a windfall. 

Further advances in teleportation runes meant plumbing and heating. Further advances in enchantment meant spellbooks could be made, with each page containing a simple spell to be used at a later date. Further advances in magical theory enabled lesser mages to pick up warding spells and scraps of healing. Magic became commercialised, available in workshops, books, and even encased within houses.

Of course, in some remote areas of the world, people are still relying on the same old cleansing spell they used 4000 years ago. But that's a tiny minority in the great world of sigils, sanitation and sanation.

I could go on further, but I do believe you get the gist of the story. If you want to know anything, anything at all about Triworld, just ask. I have spent embarrassing amounts of time (think every night and at least 3h of my day everyday for 15 years) on this world, and I know it just as well as I know Earth's history.

Chestnut Ridge, modern day, in an alternate Darlington Universe 🍂🌿

Josephine Duplanchier spent most of her twenties wandering around the world, recording her travels on social media and living off of small brand deals. That all came to a screeching halt during the global pandemic of 2020, when she had to settle with her brother and best friend Zelda in Chestnut Ridge.

Her plan was to be on the first plane out of town as soon as she could, but that all changed when she met her partner Valcita Grove, an up-and-coming restauranteur with ties to the oldest ranchers in town and more ambition than Josephine herself. Now the two of them own and operate the town’s premiere restaurant, and Josephine moonlights as a nectar distributor, selling the wine of Chestnut Ridge to discerning drinkers all across the country.

Brian Dumoulin may be one of the most interesting men to wear black and gold in quite some time, as he's got so many passions outside of hockey, like travel, food and wine. The 31-year-old shared some of his must-haves, both on and off the ice, at home and on the road.

Wine books, magazines and podcasts

One magazine I've subscribed to that I really like is called Noble Rot. It's from London, where they have two different wine bars and a wine store. I really like the stuff that they write. It's really, really cool.

For podcasts, there hasn't been as many recently. But through the course of like 2010 to 2021, there was a podcast called 'I'll Drink to That!' It's a guy named Levi Dalton. He basically interviews everyone, from people who work in restaurants, winemakers, wholesale distributors - anyone in the wine trade. They talk about how they got into wine. With the winemaking, it can be very technical, where they talk about decisions with the barrels, decisions with when to pick, how their vineyards are different than the other… so it's very intricate. I wouldn't say it's for a beginner (laughs), but it's really good information.

For books, the last one I read is called 'Terrior Footprints' by Pedro Parra. He's sort of an expert. It's a book about wine and how when you blind taste, you kind of taste soil in the glass, and that's a good way to blind taste because you can really pick up different notes if you know where it's grown in.

Loose leaf imported tea

I do a lot of green. Lingering Clouds is a green tea that I really like. Then there's Gaba, which is good for after meals, for digestion. That still has a little caffeine, so I don't try to do that towards nighttime. I always have loose leaf chamomile before bed. I'll usually do that around 7-7:30 PM, or I'm going to the bathroom all night (laughs).

Snacks with a bit of a kick

I mean, it's not healthy or anything, but I like salt and vinegar chips. Those get me, my wife too (laughs). We'll have a bag and all of sudden, it's gone. It's easy to finish a whole bag. I also like Smart Sweets sour gummy bears [the green package]. We have them on the team plane.

The stovetop

My favorite kitchen utensil is honestly the stovetop. I like cooking on the stove a lot better, I'd say, just because grilling is a little bit harder to control. I'll do steak on the stovetop, but obviously I'll cook burgers on the grill, and stuff like that. But I like just trying a bunch of different things on the stovetop.

Broom and dustpan

I love to clean and sweep, it's soothing. I like the broom and dustpan. I'm old fashioned. That's all I need.

I like what you said about the narrative, it’s what i thought from the start in regards to the car talk as it absolutely set the scene, of friends that have not spent a lot of time together and want to (they obvious can’t indulge the truth, or say they are lovers). So hey, let’s travel together for fun!

It makes sense, it gives as reason for the show, the why they are doing it. People thinking all sorts of stupid things, but that was always clear to me. I had wondered before the show aired how they were going to navigate that, the why, and so it made sense to me to lead with that, I think that’s why Jimin lead the conversation referencing they hadn’t been on a trip together in a while, acknowledging that they had been on a trip just them before.. one which is infamous. GCFT has always set them apart since its release, no other members have that sort of trip on record (obvs we know about Tae and Hobi’s trip). I mean why out of all the members, or out of all their friends, did they need or want to spend that travel time together? I mean that in the sense that it was also the case that as far as Army could see, Jimin and Tae hadn’t been spending much time together, so why not him? (Talking abkut NY/CT). The other thing that sets them apart to me is how we didn’t get any live content at the time of filming, in comparison to Jimin going to see Yoongi in NY and going live, we got nothing when he was with JK, why? It marks them as different in my opinion.

I do now wonder about the arc of the story in the rest of the episodes, I love your thought process there. I’m going to say I’m nervous for any in depth talk they may have, we’ve gotten nothing much so far about MS, but obviously in Japan they know they got in. I’m nervous because any information they give us about their reasons will be used against them, and sadly atp not just by tkkrs, but by insecure jkks too, and what a sad site to be in . However, I can’t imagine it won’t be mentioned, the bittersweet thing about Japan meaning they were just a mere couple of weeks away from enlistment day whilst there.

I have enjoyed this show immensely and agree with what you said wholeheartedly about the purpose of it all is to show us them, as they are. The small details of their relationship, the small but oh so significant details of their bond, how in sync they are and just move together. It’s truly beautiful and all I want from it is for people to respect them, and their really incredible bond. 💜

Do you remember this time last year when we were teased a possible Jikook live but it never came? JK did his very best, put on his poutiest face, fanned his lashes, showed us brawn and muscle and all sorts of things in order to get Jimin to join him during one of his many lives. Ah, what a thirsty time that was.

No, they didn't go live or tease the actual show when they were filming AYS, and I think that's probably due to them wanting to 1. Keep AYS a surprise, and 2. They still might have needed to 'sell' the show to a distributor.

Regarding the first I think we all know they love to give ARMY gifts. They know, THEY KNOW we love them together. The amount of times people have been asking them to go live together ect..they were probably giggling knowing what they were preparing. Their excitement during the NamVMinKook (help what is their name 😩) last live when Joon alluded to bedroom MMA..they were exited and wanted to keep it as surprise. On the second point I think, like someone mentioned (please, I forgot who it was, please come get your flowers 💐) they might not have sold an 8 episode show yet, so nothing was set in stone. They had a wild idea and a dream! but maybe not yet a clear idea of how they'd be promoting the show, they had no title ect. Like we say here, they might not have wanted to make us happy with a dead bird.

As to your point of them mentioning MS.. hmm..I dunno, I'm not as nervous for it, I guess. They mentioned it explicitly in episode one where they talked about deciding to do the show because thy would be going away for a while. They also said they wanted to keep doing it, to quote JK "until we're 50".

If they do mention it, I think it will be just as brief, not a whole explanation. It's as deep as they're willing to get, I suppose. Very Jimin-esque, mentioning it,but also keeping it close to the vest. They know about their haters, ofc they do, but if they're like me, they curate what they see and what they allow to permeate into their sphere. I block and report, but I suffer no fools. Not on any app. Why waste my time reading that drivel when there is this kind of love story to be celebrated.

If we were surprised by them enlisting as a duo, then I'm sure they talked about how it would be received, and they decided it was worth it.

Yes, their bond is what as breathed live into my veins these past weeks. Hell, the anticipation has been building for months! And I hope they know that. I hope they know that there are people like you and I, dear anon, who will support them, whatever may come.
