Compulsory Question 2
Crafting an artistic vision statement is a deeply personal and reflective process, especially for a design student at Lasalle College of the Arts in Singapore, where creativity and innovation are highly valued. As you ponder on "who I want to be" in the realm of design and communication
As a student at Lasalle College of the Arts in Singapore, I envision myself as a designer who blends my unique cultural heritage and personal experiences into innovative and impactful communication design. I am committed to experimenting with new ideas and technologies, continually learning, and growing in my craft. My goal is to create designs that are not only visually stunning but also socially relevant and meaningful. I look forward to collaborating with fellow creatives and contributing to a diverse and dynamic design community."
Selecting a work of design that embodies the theme of social engagement, particularly focusing on "Do Not Litter," allows for a profound exploration of critical thinking skills in the context of aspirations as a design student. One exemplary work in this area is the "Trashcam Project," a unique initiative where garbage containers in Hamburg, Germany, were transformed into giant pinhole cameras to capture the city's urban landscape.
Connection with my Aspirations:
Innovative Approach: The Trashcam Project's innovative use of everyday objects aligns with a desire for experimentation and boundary-pushing in design. It demonstrates how mundane items can be repurposed into tools for artistic expression, reflecting a commitment to innovative thinking in your design journey.
Cultural and Social Relevance: The project not only addresses environmental issues but also invites viewers to see their environment from a new perspective. This dual focus aligns with your vision to create designs that are culturally and socially relevant, sparking conversations and prompting reflection among the audience.
Community Engagement: By involving sanitation workers in the creative process, the project exemplifies the power of collaboration and community in design. It aligns with your aspiration to work within a creative community, showcasing how diverse perspectives can lead to more impactful designs.
Connection with Critical Thinking Skills:
Problem-Solving: The Trashcam Project addresses the issue of littering by engaging the public in an unexpected and thought-provoking way. It demonstrates how design can be a tool for solving social problems, a key aspect of critical thinking.
Reflective Thought: This project encourages viewers to reflect on their own behavior and the environment, which is a crucial element of critical thinking. It provokes self-awareness and consideration of broader social issues.
Overall, the Trash cam Project aligns well with my artistic vision and the critical thinking themes by demonstrating innovation, social relevance, collaborative effort, and creative problem-solving.

mini digital keychain camera, april (1-2) and may (3-4) 2021
the drugstore classic, the 100k pixel powerhouse, the great grey wonder... the cam of a thousand brands*! i finally got one of those omnipresent little silver plastic cameras that for a while took up permanent residence in every pharmacy, screaming “wow! only $10″, seemingly everywhere and nowhere. i specifically got it because it uses the same cable as my aipteks, a cable which i’d been searching for forever and which turned out to be far cheaper to get bundled with this trashcam to end all trashcams. high-def size is 352x288** and small size is 176x144, with both sizes having high and low compression modes. mostly been using it in the default large size low-compression mode, but i definitely want to mess with the other modes. it’s got a similar character to the QVGA mode of the VQ300, but perhaps less pixelated and more... smudgey? something like shots from a still video camera; in some conditions there’ll be a streakiness to it like a inkjet running low or a scanner malfunctioning. it’s super interesting and it’ll be fun to mess with it more!
there’s a ton of interesting shots people have done with this device the past two decades, but i’m especially digging these, everything from low-bit Cocteau Twins to wild glitching that really makes it seem like a still video cam.
*or in my case, none at all! // **i think my shots from this month were interpolated to 640x480 in the software?

#FoldingPaperProject: Cal and Felix (Part III)
The following text is part of the #FoldingPaperProject. The project, set up by Molly (www.mimmerr.co.uk) aims to spread productivity, creativity and fun amongst the world’s current bleak state.
It works like the folding paper game we played at school, where one person draws the head of a character, the next person the body and so on. Whereas, we’ll be continuing a story.
You don’t need to be an accomplished writer. You don’t even need to be any good! You just need to be able to continue the story in four- five hundred words and post it on your site. If you don’t have a site, I’ll put it on mine for you.
If you would like to get involved, contact Molly @mimmerr or at [email protected] If not, read on and share the story via the #FoldingPaperProject hashtag. Happy reading and writing!

Cal lifted the pinkies from the defrosting tub and whacked them into the feeding tub with disgust. He had always hated feeding time at the sanctuary. Only 1% of bats are carnivorous but Felix insisted on enlisting them onto the breeding program saying that it would boost social media attention – which Cal should be grateful for considering where they were this time last year. The agreement was that Felix do feeds since Cal had taken up more admin for the company, but lately Felix had been growing distant over the past few months and after only half a day of Marty reporting, Cal now knew why. He checked his phone again. Where was he?
Cal rubbed his temples absentmindedly before retracting at the smell of stale blood and other indistinctive juices. He picked up the plastic container and made his way from the cold storage shed (aptly named the Coffin) through the dark hallways, still fresh with plastic sheetings, and into the newly refurbished tropical house. At least this time he remembered to hold his nose before the wave of dense heat hit him.
“HEY!” Cal stopped walking and turned back to the familiar voice. “Where do you think you’re going with Fransisco’s dinner?”. Even when Cal was angry with him, he couldn’t help swooning a bit at his luscious voice. He stopped himself from being distracted and fought back, “I figured if you had better things to do then I shoul-”
Felix cut him short, “You know he doesn’t like your way of feeding, it’s too unemotional, he likes to be spoke to and charmed as he eats.”
“He’s a damn bat, Felix. He should be treated like one”
“Don’t let people hear you talk about him like that, especially with ‘Gutterpants’ in the vicinity.”
“Oh, I think he’ll have much more revealing things to talk about with the TrashCam trash-readers. Of all the weekends to choose to have one of your strops, why this one?”
“Well you’re in a mood. I was just trying to let you enjoy your weekend, have relaxing dip on the beach before the sun disappeared and still have time to make it back to for feeding. How was I supposed to know that Lizzo was docked so close? Besides, I’m sure it’s nothing the press haven’t seen before...in fact, it could increase our visitors!”
“But at what cost Fe? I’m sick of having to be the centre of attention and watch people snickering from across the room at parties. You promised me this weekend would be normal-”
“Okay, fine, I’m sorry. It is normal. Can you let me take Fransisco’s food and you go back to the catering staff to see if everything is set for tomorrow”.
Cal sighed and nodded apathetically. Walking past Felix he could have sworn that he smelled a slightly familiar cologne, but then dismissed the thought at once. Tomorrow was much too important to be worrying about that.

lynx PPL 500XL, film washi Z 400, may 2021
and now for something vaguely resembling “legible photographs”! the Lynx (which shares genes with the classic Time Magazine Camera) is my first proper toy(ish) camera, i’ve had all-auto point-and-shoots in the form of my Ricoh and Nikon (plus a louder-than-sin Canon AF35M i’ve never actually used), but this is my first true film trashcam, all manual everything and no brand recognition... and i love it already! excited to see where i can take it from here. the softness of it definitely works well with the washi film i inaugurated it with. not thinking too much but still a lot to think about (that sounds mad deep), it’s a nice chill spot to be in.
