The Old Man-ification of TV is here
On these shows, any larger conflicts are ultimately window-dressing for the escapist fantasy of self-made authority that Yellowstone and its ilk offer, one where power begets more power, not consequences. This model holds true across what we might dub the old maniverse. In it, the wisdom of Hollywood’s elders lends itself not to passivity and weakness but to unapologetic traditionalism straight out of the Jesus and John Wayne playbook.
There’s a reason, after all, that most of these stories are married in some way to the American West. The lure of wide open spaces isn’t just about attaining property and power, but about becoming a self-made individual. Men like Ford, Stallone, Bridges, and Costner have embodied that mythos on our screens; they’re the ones who can teach us how to become fearsome beholden-to-no-one forces to be reckoned with.
This approach to generational difference, too, is a fantasy about power: how it’s held and how it’s earned. These narratives frame their protagonists’ traditionalist paradigms as an existential conflict between themselves and the modern world. While other beloved shows like Stranger Things express their nostalgia by transporting us back in time, shows like Yellowstone and its ilk express their longing for a different age by constantly reinforcing their worldviews and refusing to allow much of an alternative. These aren’t shows that address systemic change because they don’t think systemically at all; they align with individualism at all costs.
That their (white, male, boomer) protagonists may have benefited from the American system is, well, not really something worth investigating.

Family vacation planning tips
Family vacations are a source of joy and lifelong memories, but the planning process can sometimes feel like a daunting task. To ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey for the entire family, it's crucial to approach the planning phase with thoughtfulness and organization. In this comprehensive guide, we share essential family vacation planning tips to help you create a memorable and stress-free getaway. 1. Start with Clear Objectives Begin your family vacation planning journey by establishing clear objectives. Discuss with your family members to understand everyone's expectations, interests, and preferences. Whether it's a relaxing beach retreat, an adventure in the great outdoors, or an exploration of cultural landmarks, having a shared vision will guide your decisions throughout the planning process. 2. Set a Realistic Budget Determining a budget is a fundamental step in family vacation planning. Consider all potential expenses, including transportation, accommodation, meals, activities, and miscellaneous costs. Be realistic about your financial constraints and prioritize spending on experiences that matter most to your family. Setting a budget early on helps avoid financial stress during and after the trip. 3. Choose the Right Destination Selecting a destination that caters to the diverse interests and ages of your family members is crucial. Consider factors such as climate, activities available, and the overall atmosphere of the location. Whether you opt for a theme park, a beach resort, a national park, or a cultural city, ensure the destination aligns with your family's preferences and offers a variety of experiences for everyone. 4. Plan Ahead, But Stay Flexible Once you've chosen a destination, plan your itinerary with a balance of structured activities and free time. Pre-book key elements like accommodation and major attractions, but leave room for spontaneity. Unexpected discoveries and leisurely moments often contribute to the most cherished memories. A flexible schedule allows your family to adapt to unforeseen circumstances or simply take a break when needed. 5. Involve Everyone in the Planning Process Make vacation planning a collaborative effort by involving all family members in decision-making. Allow each person to contribute ideas, whether it's selecting activities, choosing restaurants, or deciding on day trips. This inclusive approach ensures that everyone feels invested in the vacation and enhances the overall enjoyment for each family member. 6. Consider Accommodation Wisely Choose accommodation that caters to your family's needs and preferences. Family-friendly hotels or vacation rentals with multiple bedrooms, kitchen facilities, and recreational areas are often ideal. Additionally, consider the location's proximity to key attractions and the availability of amenities such as swimming pools or play areas for children. 7. Pack Thoughtfully Packing efficiently can significantly contribute to the ease of your family vacation. Create a checklist that includes essentials such as clothing, toiletries, medications, and any specific items required for planned activities. Consider the climate of your destination and pack accordingly. If traveling with young children, be sure to bring comfort items and entertainment for the journey. 8. Plan for Downtime While it's tempting to fill your itinerary with a multitude of activities, it's equally important to plan for downtime. Family vacations should offer moments of relaxation and rejuvenation. Whether it's an afternoon by the pool, a leisurely stroll through a park, or a quiet evening in, allowing time for rest ensures that everyone can recharge and fully enjoy the adventure. 9. Be Mindful of Ages and Abilities Consider the ages and physical abilities of all family members when planning activities. Ensure that planned excursions and attractions are suitable for everyone, and be realistic about the energy levels of young children or elderly family members. Choosing inclusive activities ensures that the entire family can participate and enjoy the vacation to the fullest. 10. Embrace Technology, but Set Boundaries While technology can be a valuable tool for navigation, communication, and entertainment during the journey, it's essential to set boundaries. Establish designated tech-free times, especially during meals or shared activities, to encourage meaningful interactions and create lasting memories without constant digital distractions. 11. Capture the Moments Finally, don't forget to capture the special moments of your family vacation. Whether through photos, videos, or a travel journal, documenting the experiences adds to the nostalgia and allows you to relive the joyous moments long after the trip concludes. In conclusion, family vacation planning is a multifaceted endeavor that requires careful consideration and thoughtful decision-making. By incorporating these essential tips into your planning process, you can ensure a harmonious and enjoyable journey for every family member. From setting clear objectives to embracing flexibility and capturing the moments, these guidelines will help you create a memorable and stress-free family adventure.

TEAM MISSIONS 001
hello everyone, and welcome to our first team mission pairing! all characters submitted through the participation call on discord have been put into teams of either three or four, and below the cut, you will find more details on the predicament they have found themselves in. here’s how the missions will work:
there will be a dedicated discord channel under the “discord ic” category for each mission. that is where these threads will take place! please use tupperbox and the #tupper-register channel (or the tupper dashboard, if you’re fancy) to create bots for your characters to write under in these channels.
the missions will last two weeks to give everyone plenty of time to work through the missions—if you feel your thread needs more time than that at the end, feel free to give us a heads up and keep going!
plot away amongst your teams to come up with an outline of how these missions will go. get creative with it! we’d love to see what you come up with. please remember to run all major plots by the admins.
we hope you all have fun with these missions! if you want to adjust anything about the mission parameters we’ve set out below, please, feel free to reach out to the admins and we will adjust accordingly! these are bare bones outlines meant to give you a jumping off point, but if you feel something else would be more in line with your character, please let us know and we’ll work it into the plots!
lastly, please like this post once you’ve read it. team outlines are under the cut, go nuts!
begging for mercy
wonder woman, superman and batman tracked the message sent about the redeemer to a remote part of wyoming, deep in yellowstone national park. unfortunately, all they found there was forest, forest, and more forest, and the more the three venture out into the fray, the more they realize: there’s nothing here.
they’re about to give up and head back to their respective homes when reality starts to blur around them, and they find it more and more difficult to find their way out of the forest. bruce realizes, too late, that this untouched area of the forest is infested with ater clementia, colloquially known as black mercy.
before he can alert the other two to their need to escape, and quickly, they sink into delusions of a perfect life, far from the troubles of their daily lives.
just a shot away
while tracking brick’s gang in star city, black canary found a crate of strange, futuristic weapons, all recently unloaded from a transport van with new jersey plates. it doesn’t take a huge logical leap to realize the weapons came from gotham city, and she hopped on the first flight she could get out there.
in central city, the flash has been tracking weapons coming in and out of the city for some time now; central, being the largest transportation hub in the midwest, also has a thriving black market, and barry is ready to nip it in the bud. they found a similar crate of futuristic, highly dangerous weapons, offloaded from an express train from gotham city, and they took off for the jersey coast as well.
zatanna zatara has also been keeping track of these weapons; she’s interrupted quite a few of their shipments, but there are always, always more. they are quite fed up with it, and after canceling their show for the night, they decided to finish this, once and for all.
hawkgirl hadn’t been paying attention to the weapons until she had to—when she had been nearly shot out of the sky by weapons so destructive they had actually posed a threat to her. now, shayera is pissed off and looking for justice. or vengeance. whichever feels best.
our four intrepid heroes track their investigations to a warehouse on the gotham docks where they run into each other for the first time; now, the four of them will have to find a way to work together and take down the mysterious weapons master.
wild, wild west
if green lantern was being honest, he was tired of inexplicable events in his life. that was why green arrow invited him out on patrol, in the hopes they could bust some low-level gangsters in star city and go home able to pat themselves on the back and worry about the troubling message later.
of course, nothing goes to plan in star city, and when they find constantine locked in a bona fide, potter-esque duel, they had no choice but to throw themselves into the fray (as stupid as that might be for two people with no magic). constantine had been tracking this particular dark magic user for some time now, starting back in gotham city, and found that this evening was the best night to strike and hopefully take him out.
the duel turned out to be a much more difficult battle to win than constantine had originally anticipated. the force of his opponent’s spells started to literally tear the asphalt off the earth, and constantine tried to green lantern and green arrow to get back, and quick, but the warning came too late, as the three of them are sucked through a portal.
where do they land up? what isn’t quite yet california, 1801. cowboy country. with constantine’s quarry nowhere to be found, the three have to work together to track him down and find a way back to their own time.
everybody loves a clown
ferris aircraft sources only the best quality parts for their aviation technology, and carol ferris makes sure of that by making routine trips to the various suppliers to make sure everything is going to plan. she was making one of these trips, this time in gotham city, to a warehouse on bleake island, when things took a turn for the worse.
forcing their way through the back door of the warehouse, armed to the teeth with brightly colored weapons, gangsters in clown makeup shoot up at the ceiling, getting everyone’s attention. a man in a blue jacket, with the name mr. frost emblazoned across the arm, entered with a grin, practically skipping up to carol.
“well, well, well. lookie here, boys! boss-lady’s in town.” he turned to her with a malicious smile. “this is what we here in gotham like to call a robbery.”
caught in the crossfire is leslie thompkins, who had been asked to pay a visit to the warehouse to meet the union leader as they were getting off their shift. carol and leslie are now part of an active robbery.
when she saw the commotion at the warehouse, catwoman knew she should just keep her head down and mind her business, but she was never fond of seeing innocent people in real danger; from her associations with harley, she knew enough about jonny frost to know that none of those hostages were going to make it out of there alive. when she saw leslie was one of the unlucky people in there, she knew: she couldn’t just keep walking by.
now, how the hell is she going to communicate to leslie that she’s coming to the rescue?

"Or any landmark place with iconic look related nature not openly presidental history?"
First, most of our natural parks -- Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Sequoias/Redwoods, Badlands, etc. -- are all in the west/midwest and not very easy for people to get to in an eco-friendly place. Almost all of our natural areas require long car rides or planes (or both). That said, here are a few off the top of my head:
Our most iconic natural landmark is Grand Canyon, but it's practically the middle of nowhere and not an easy place to get to (see comment above).
Central Park (in NYC) - they could hold the ceremony at the Belvedere Castle or at the Jackie Kennedy Onassis Reservoir
Niagara Falls - bonus points for this one if Will and Kate pair it with a Canada tour as they can be on the Canadian side while the prizes are held on the US side. Though most of the event venues seem to be hotel ballrooms (which isn't as glamorous as the Alexandra Palace) but wouldn't it be neat if the whole thing was done on one of the boats with the falls as the backdrop?
Florida Everglades
Mount St. Helens in Washington (easily accessible from Vancouver if there's a Canadian tour)
But there are also several cities along the East Coast so endangered by rising oceans due to climate change they're expected to be gone by 2100. The Earthshot Council might give these places more weight so they can raise attention to the harmful effects of climate change:
Boston
Manhattan
Miami
New Orleans
Charleston
All signs point to Boston or NYC because they're also transportation hubs, making it easier for people to get there. Not only that, Boston and NYC make it easy for performers and presenters to "offset" a trip to Earthshot with other business in NYC.
I am wary of the event being in DC. 2022 is the midterm elections so it's going to be a very political fall with a lot of sniping. Earthshot has to avoid politics to be a sustainable long-term effort so I can't see William wanting to get pulled into the muck. (And we Americans cam/will always make everything political.) So if it is held here in DC, there should be no politics at all - no Presidents, no First Ladies, no one currently sitting in Congress or serving in the Cabinet. We don't have an "elder statesman" not affiliated with politics in any way, like David Attenborough, who could be the face of this movement in the US. The only people I can think of are Jeff Corwin, because I used to watch his nature shows all the time growing up, and Morgan Freeman, because he voiced the "March of the Penguins" documentary that set the standard for American nature docs. (Al Gore and Jane Fonda are too political, and Leo DiCaprio is very "do as I say, not as I do" with his private plane army.)
Thanks for this detailed analysis. I also think DC isn't an option, not just because it's an election year, but because there is no way that a future King of the UK would host such a high profile event at the seat of the American democracy.

Where the Buffalo Roam: World’s Longest Wildlife Bridge Could Cross the Mississippi
Conservationist aims to replace old bridge with bison preserve, benefiting environment and spotlighting Indigenous history
— Kari Paul | Sunday, 27 June 2021 | Guardian USA

Between Iowa and Illinois, spanning the only stretch of the Mississippi River that flows from east to west, sits an exhausted 55-year-old cement bridge. Each day 42,000 cars drive across the ageing structure, which is slated to be torn down and replaced.
But when Chad Pregracke looks at the bridge, he has a different vision entirely – not an old overpass to be demolished, but a home for the buffalo to roam.
The conservationist and local hero hails from the Quad Cities, a 300,000-person metropolitan area spanning two states on either side of the Mississippi River. It is named for its four cities: Bettendorf and Davenport in south-eastern Iowa and Moline and Rock Island in north-western Illinois.
Pregracke spends months every year living on barges and cleaning up refuse from the Mississippi, and he has brought his passion for the river to his latest project: converting the ailing bridge into a buffalo preserve. The idea came to him four years ago as he drove across the bridge one day, he says: “I thought, what if we made this a wildlife crossing?”
Now, his unlikely vision is being taken seriously. The departments of transportation in Iowa and Illinois are considering the proposal, which would break ground in as little as five years.

If completed, the bridge would become the longest human-made wildlife crossing in the world. The plan would see a new bridge built further down the river, where car traffic will be rerouted, and the existing bridge converted for use by humans and American bison – colloquially known as buffalo.
On one side would stand a pedestrian path and bike path, and on the other an enclosed bison paddock that would let visitors see eye to eye with the huge creatures. The herds would be free to roam between Iowa and Illinois in the grassy expanse, and the project would establish the first national park in either state.
While in many ways unique, the proposal follows a growing trend of urban renewal projects – perhaps most famously the High Line in New York City, a raised railroad converted into an elevated park. In Chicago, a raised railroad track was also converted into a park and bike trail. In Los Angeles, there have been proposals to convert part of the 101 freeway into a park.
Meanwhile, bison preserves featuring small herds have emerged in various locations across the US, including outside of Denver and in the middle of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park.
How creating wildlife crossings can help reindeer, bears – and even crabs
Advocates for the Bison Bridge, as it is being called, say repurposing the structure rather than demolishing it would reduce waste, save costs, and benefit the environment. Pregracke says the project would help turn the Quad City area into a world-class destination, highlighting the Mississippi River as a feature worth traveling to, rather than a body of water to be crossed on the highway. “I mean, how could you not stop for bison?” Pregracke said.
Native American groups say bison restoration is an important means of reconnecting with the land and local history – and recognizing the interlinked atrocities committed against bison and Indigenous people.
Since 1997, the National Wildlife Federation has held a conservation agreement with an intertribal advocacy group for the return of wild bison to tribal lands and “restoring Native Americans’ cultural connection to bison”. What is now the Quad Cities was, in the early 1800s, a principal trading center for Indigenous peoples. Advocates say highlighting the area’s traditional connection with bison can call attention to that history.
The Bison’s History as a ‘Cornerstone Species’
Buffalo were once abundant in the midwest and western United States, but they were hunted nearly to extinction.
In the mid-1800s it was estimated that 30 million to 60 million buffalo roamed the Great Plains before the US government began to systematically target them as a means to starve Indigenous Americans and drive them off their land. By the end of the 19th century, only 300 wild bison remained.
The current bridge over the Mississippi. Photograph: Bison Bridge Foundation
Pregracke has convened a team of experts to help bring the bridge to life, including Jason Baldes, a tribal bison coordinator for the National Wildlife Federation. A member of the Eastern Shoshone, Baldes works to restore bison to the lands they once populated and reconnect them with Indigenous peoples who revered them as a main source of food and a spiritual symbol.
“The bison was known as the life commissary for my grandmas and grandpas,” Baldes said. “It was food, clothing, shelter, and was also central to our cultural and spiritual belief systems.”
Baldes said restoring bison in the US was important both culturally and ecologically. Bison are known as a keystone species, meaning their existence benefits a number of species in their native habitats.
The stampedes of millions of bison on the Great Plains helped aerate the soil, aiding in plant growth and the dispersal of native seeds to create a varied ecosystem. The fur of the animal is ideal for insulating the nests of certain birds, and burrowing owls once relied on their dung for building their homes. Bison have a tendency to wallow, or roll around on the ground, creating small depressions that provide unique habitats for plant and animal species.
Baldes said the reintroduction of bison to tribal communities and public parks represented an opportunity to teach the broader public about that painful history and rebuild.
“We are finding ways to heal from the atrocities of the past, and buffalo restoration, and the restoration of the foundation of our cultural values and belief systems, is very important to that,” Baldes said.
A rendering of the project. Photograph: Bison Bridge Foundation
Baldes said based on his experience with bison populations, the bridge would be a sufficient size for a small herd of eight to 10 animals. But the small size did not diminish the importance of the project, he said, adding that he saw it as a “very key educational tool” for the broader public. The Meskwaki nation had been contacted regarding the project but was not collaborating in an official capacity as of now, a spokeswoman said.
“Bison were destroyed as a means to eradicate Native American land holdings and inflict genocidal practices, so for our tribal communities, buffalo restoration is very important,” Baldes said. “But it’s not only important to Native American tribes, but it’s important to the American people to at least have an opportunity to learn about this history.”
Local Agencies Anticipate a Bison Boom
Daniel MacNulty, an associate professor of wildland resources at Utah State University who studies wild bison populations in Yellowstone national park, said the repurposed bridge would in fact make a feasible habitat for the animals. Bison were hardy animals that could easily adapt to new surroundings, and while the size of the park proposed would not necessarily support a large herd of bison, a small herd would serve an important purpose.
Bison Bridge foundation logo. Photograph: Bison Bridge Foundation
“It is certainly an out-of-the-box idea, but it provides an opportunity to conserve bison,” MacNulty said. “Any time the public is exposed to information about the ecology of bison and the Great Plains, it is a positive thing.”
Officials in the Quad City area have been supportive of the project in part because of the opportunities it could bring for tourism and growth to the area, which has had a stagnant population for more than 30 years. The project has been endorsed by the local community and economic development organization the Quad Cities Chamber and the regional tourism board Visit Quad Cities.
“We are trying everything we can do to make the Quad Cities a prosperous regional economy – and that means we need to think differently about how we attract and retain residents and businesses,” said Paul Rumler, president of the Quad Cities Chamber.
Currently, the area sees 1.6m visitors per year, generating $954m in local spending. Visit Quad Cities estimates a new national park could quadruple that number in just the first year, with sales tax bringing a “huge boost” to local hotels and restaurants.
“We would like to be able to point to this and show that this is how we do business here – we are creative, we are innovative and willing to try new concepts, and we have the perseverance to pull it off,” Rumler said. “We all need a crazy idea to latch on to.”
