this is before they came to terms that they were transmasc (hence the confusion on pronouns and different name), so .. yeayy.. gendercrisis… (they/them is usually what i’ll be referring to them as though)

they focus their attention, efforts and energy into studying and being an A+ student, since their parents expect a lot of them going into boarding school.

I’m not going to say there’s anything wrong with transmasc Riza headcanons or any other character for that matter and I enjoy them from time to time as well, but I am going to say that a lot of the specific characters who get headcannoned as transmasc more regularly seem to come from a misogynistic view of what a woman should be

(Typically women who aren’t explicitly turbo traditional feminine)

A friend of mine opened the proverbial flood gates - sharing someone’s assumption about Rosa from Fullmetal Alchemist and now I’m sitting here thinking about the gender and sexuality of pretty much the entire cast - and frankly why worrying about it isn’t really… needed. (It’s fun as hell to think about and/or head canon, I just mean it’s not required discourse for the material.)

And it feels weird to say that as someone who is Queer AF, but the lens of FMA isn’t one of gender equality or sexuality or even really a query on “what is freedom?” Or “what is expression?”

If anything it’s a conversation about how we are all human. How none of us is perfect, and how we’re all different with different cultures, religions, motivations, etc. How despite all those differences we still need to connect, to communicate, to work together. (There’s a lot more in there, but I’m not trying to write a dissertation right now.)

FMA showed three distinct cultures, a dozen different schools of thought, two religions, and two different views of the same science, and said “it’s all valid”.

The protagonist was even very atheist, and his only gripe with religion was the one time it was being abused to harm the people.

And I mean, in a way we got a very interesting view of sense of self and such in Envy. We even got a front row seat to Edward growing into who he was, and he was faced with more introspection than even the most queer of us will go through (anime is often presented in extremes, I’m not trying to diminish anyone’s real experience here.)

But, because I didn’t actually mean to ramble, I’m just gonna say this much:

Greed is Queer as Hell.

Edward is a violently protective Ally.

Insisting Riza is transmasc (the point that started out conversation) takes more away from her character than it adds. Which, I say as someone transmasc, so I’m not trying to be difficult for no reason.
