i'm by far not the first or tenth or thousandth person to say this but the way people talk about ai art can be so annoying there's a difference between 1) specific concerns about the way ai art is being used and sourced in practice like by using art people made w/o permission or compensation to train the ai or how it can take jobs away from artists and designers which i think can be legitimate concerns in this shitass society and 2) reactionary broad statements like "ai art is bad bc it Isn't Real Art" bc then i'm like "🤨 what is real art then 🧐 define art to me in a way that objectively proves what art has value and what doesn't 🤔" like i personally haven't found much ai art i've seen interesting bc like i said often examples people post online just look like digital art sourced from and trying to mimic other artists and part of what i've realized i value about art with the advent of ai is that i like knowing a person made it with intention and effort and time and could discuss their process or choices and that their life and identity and culture can influence it, but i can also recognize that it's just a kind of technology and a medium and that's just my personal opinion. look at this video about a gallery by hito steyerl and tell me that isn't cool as fuck!! it's actively saying something it's doing something interesting the visuals are interesting. and even if you don't think it's cool which is fine all art is subjective try to tell me it's not art!! ai IS cool and useful it's a tool it's a medium the discussion around ai is just so dominated by dipshits and people who are ostensibly well meaning but who wont think about how it could be cool and just think its evil no matter what. i saw a great post a while ago by someone whose url i can't remember it's like transkenobi or something saying basically what i'm saying but specifically using a great example to contrast how ridiculous people's extreme stances on ai art often are by pointing out how it's not more exploitative than, like, buying art supplies that were made by exploited workers in an LDC and exported to your local craft store. the problem they have with it is inherently the sourcing and the people it can affect by being made exploitatively not the tool itself
