not to be the guy that’s only talking about mizu5, but I think the impact of it is so interesting. obviously it’s going to have the impact of handling a trans character’s story really well —something that is so important as we continue to progress as a society— and I think it’s also a testament to how much these things can blow up. handling a queer character’s story well is going to make a really good impression among audiences (at least, the ones that are progressively becoming louder and louder in the grand scheme of things). I’ve seen this event bringing people into proseka too, which there’s something to be said there
it’s so interesting to me how much this event has spread outside of the immediate and related fandoms for project sekai (think enstars, bang!dream, etc.), onto completely random people’s social media feeds. the amount of tweets I’ve seen from random ass accounts talking about this is kind of fascinating
Tumblr media
like this is just some guy. and I’m obsessed with it.
anyways. big game companies or tv studios. make more trans and queer characters that have care and understanding put into their storylines. it will pay off and age incredibly well and bring you more money

Leshanna backstory time!!! i've been waiting so long to get to this lil conversation~
Tumblr media
[plaintext in alt and under the cut]
“My fathers don’t know I dropped out,” she said. “But I…it’s not just that. I’ve been avoiding them since before I left Cyvanil, and the last time they saw me, I…I looked very different.”
“How different?”
She gave him a weak smile. “About as different as you looked before you became the irritating man you are today.”
“First off, I’m a charming man, and you know it,” Zander said. “And secondly—what do you mean you didn’t tell them you were choosing womanhood? I know Oraladhel is a little different to Invereid about these things, but I thought—”
“I didn’t exactly do it on purpose!” Leshanna shoved to her feet, pacing before them. “I had it all planned out—my announcement, the ceremony…I was going to change under the starlight at midwinter, like a real damiri! And then one morning I just…woke up like this!” She gestured down at herself with a frustrated flick of her hands.
“Woke up like…” Zander’s eyes widened. He dropped his voice to something of a stage whisper. “Leshanna, the only people that happens to are witches.”

i JUST yapped about this on tiktok and i'm instantly here because oh my GOD.
(spoiler warning for heartstopper season 3 - episode 6)
ELLE AND TRANS ACTIVISM!? ELLE'S FUCKING STORYLINE!?
i'm crying and i haven't stopped crying.
i'm talking about the bit where she is brought on the radio to discuss her art. she's doing something that she enjoys, she's given a space to talk about it, and they make it about the trans "debate" (p.s bonus mention to "trans people aren't a debate, we're human beings")
i'm talking about elle LEAVING THE ROOM. and how fucking powerful and important and COMFORTING that is.
to have a trans person leave the room.
to have it shown that we don't all want to be activists, and you shouldn't expect us to. that we shouldn't need to be. to have media representation of a trans person choosing peace, and choosing what's best for her.
to have them specifically mention that a cis person was on the last show, and said transphobic things about same-sex spaces. to have it mentioned that the cis peson went first, and elle was brought on as a rebuttal. that she already had less power in this "debate" because they allowed someone with more respect in society, who isn't even part of the discussion, who wouldn't even understand the complexities of existing publicly as a trans person, to go first.
and to have her still. leave. the. room.
i've been on the radio nine times.
only three of nine discussions that i've had have been aired. why? because only three of them were meant to be about my identity. because that wasn't what i was there to talk about. it wasn't relevant.
and then to link it to everything now? to link it to all the massive discussions i've been having recently in this space? i'm sobbing.
trans people do not need to be activists. and i personally enjoy it! i enjoy talking about it - i hate that i have to, but i personally do enjoy being a loud activist (not that this is activism but yk, in my wider life) - but...
she came onto a space to talk about something she enjoyed, and ended up having to defend her right to exist.
and she left the room.
because the cis person went first. because that wasn't what she wanted to talk about. because it's exhausting having these conversations day in day out.
and most importantly, because she didn't have to speak on it.
and then, let's talk about the fact that she was only asked because she now had "influence". that her voice only matters now because she's "big", and it's insignificant otherwise. that a trans person with any kind of traction needs to be an activist - which we see SO much in the media! we see it so much online! that any successful trans person needs to be loud and active. that she was questioned about the meaning of her art only in the context of a political discussion on her right to exist.
so she left the room.
trans people do not need to be activists and they shouldn't be expected to be, and oh my GOD i'm so glad that we have that representation.

One of the biggest shock moments for people who haven't seen rwby who I talk to, seems to be the eraser of a gay romance for the character inspired by Achiles. And in spite of the fans wanting to ignore it or brush it away because "it's an alusion it doesn't have to be one to one" we need to accept that it's incredibly messed up that a historically gay character was turned into a heterosexual doting love interest of the most blatant "shounen protagonist insert" who doesn't exist without him in the context.
Pyrrha's writing isn't just infuriating because she's not even a fleshed out character by the time she dies, it's frustrating because Achilles is one of the most well known queer characters in history and rather than leaning into that and giving us something interesting yet tragic, they gave us a cookie cutter romance where girl dies for man angst.

I've seen some people say: “Trent shouldn’t have been gay, he should have just supported Colin anyway.” And it's such a weird (and bad) take.
Had Trent been straight we wouldn’t have gotten the scenes we did. Colin could have opened up and told Trent how he felt, but Trent wouldn’t have understood, he could have been supportive. But he wouldn’t understand where Colin is coming from. But because Trent is also gay he knows what it’s like being in the closet, living with fear and dread. Living with thoughts like “if I tell the people I love about my sexuality, will they hate me?”. You can’t get that from a straight ally, no matter how supportive and well meaning they are. Because they don't know what it's like. We need straight allies, we need all the straight allies we can get. But what Colin needs RIGHT NOW is someone who, while not a professional athlete, is involved in the world of football. Knows about homophobic fans, knows that there are a culture of toxic masculinity and homophobia in the clubs. That is why it’s important that Trent himself is gay.
Colin almost got runover by a cyclist in his desperate attempt to run away from Trent at the gay bar. But the relief when he understands what Trent is saying "I must have a good reason for that, mustn't I?" is so clear. Trent is also queer, Trent is safe, I can let Trent in.
And I think some people might read that line as "I haven't outed you because I'm gay too, but if I had been straight I would have" which isn't what Trent means, Trent is using that phrase to be subtle, to let Colin come to his own conclusion, because Colin is stressed out, he's scared. By letting Colin think for himself it gives Colin an opportunity to calm down (which is also why Trent holds his hands out as if calming a frightened animal, he also makes himself slightly smaller by bending his knees and leaning forward slightly). And he does, he realises what Trent is saying and he calms down. It's also an added layer of security it's not just, "I haven't outed you" it's "I haven't outed you because I am also queer". A straight person saying that they haven't outed you doesn't hold as much weight as a queer person saying it. Because you know that the queer person knows how important it is to be safe and to come out on your own terms wheras a straight person, especially an eager well meaning ally might try and encourage you to come out because "hey, it's gonna be fine", even when that's not the support you need at the moment (there are ofc exceptions, both when it comes to straight people and queer people).
But because Trent is also gay, Colin now has someone in his corner at work, who knows him, knows his secret. Who also carried that secret himself once. We’ll most likely get straight allies in the other players and the leaders at Richmond.
So no, Trent shouldn’t have been straight. Because that is not the support Colin needed at that moment. He needed queer solidarity.

hey whats Stars Align
hello. 'Stars Align' is a 2019, 12 episode anime about, among a lot of other things, soft tennis. one of its main characters is yuu asuka, a character who is explicitly non cis.
weirdly, i've been seeing a lot of criticism popping up for copal's handling of the recent mizuki event especially on the topic of their gender. i have also seen both prior to and after the release of the event people not so subtly implying that as a japanese company they have no knowledge about being trans or non-binary or any other sort of non cis identity. or that it would be "more realistic" for ena to have not known about trans people or reacted poorly to the news.
western perspectives of gender and being trans do not apply everywhere, of course, but to suggest that a complete lack of knowledge and a more unknowing/bigoted reaction to such news would be more inherent to and make more sense from a character on account of them being from a non-western culture doesn't exactly sit right with me for a number of reason i'm sure you can figure out.
japanese people are capable of understanding being queer. this should not be a novel concept. and if it is to you, try to think about why.

...fucks sake FGO just make a event about gender and sexuality.
This is such a Trans statement it's insane.
Resident Trans-Woman talks about how she had to lie about who she was instead to not be proclaimed a heritic, following about how it eats away at you to hide who you are, and how she doesn't want her student to face the same torture.
Mash who is also kinda Trans-coded with "not being a real girl" and her inferiority to "real servents"(girls). Along with her epic of Remnant story being about being a "real person(girl) but no longer being able to fight(oh hey HRT muscle loss).
This is so fucking Trans-coded, I'm not sure they could code it harder if they where trying.

I don't have perfectly coherent thoughts about this at the moment, but I feel these panels really encapsulate that period of after transitioning where everything has changed and you have nowhere really to go, either through loss of relationships or that 'now what?' feeling of achieving the one goal you've put in a lot of effort to achieve.
