Almost one month until I start testosterone!
It's also that time of year when directors start sending out their contracts and letters of availability to musicians like myself, and I've had to start coming out to all of them in response. So far, I've gotten nothing but support from everyone and it genuinely makes me so grateful.
The general message I've been sending to them has been as follows:
"As part of my transition, I have decided to undergo hormone replacement therapy, and will be taking testosterone starting May 28th of this year. One of the effects of testosterone (as I'm sure you are aware) is on the voice. Its effects are the same as young men undergoing puberty, so my voice will most likely deepen over time into that of a phenotypically "masculine" voice. This is a decision I do not make lightly, and have come to after many years of consideration. I will be taking regular lessons with Dr. (DM me if you're looking for resources) who specializes in transgender voices as I undergo these changes. My goal is to continue singing at the highest level regardless of how my voice changes, but where it will most comfortably settle and how long that will take is up to genetics and fate. By next year, I may be able to sing tenor or baritone, though I intend to train my upper register to sing countertenor if possible."
Then I thank them and let them know that I'd like to re-audition for their ensembles when my voice has settled more. They've all responded positively and with excitement for me, and the chorusmaster for my city's opera company even said there would be no need, as she knows the work of the professor I'm taking lessons with and thinks I would benefit from being on stage this season(!!!!)
In other news, the symphony I do admin for had their soprano soloist drop out of the Mozart Requiem so guess who's learning the part and performing it in two weeks? Your boy!! It feels a bit kismet. What better way to honor the end of my soprano career than with a requiem?
I'm still nervous to all hell but I'm just so tired of living like this. I just feel like this decision is going to change everything for the better for me.

hey guess what my name is veronica and my new album is out everywhere now!!! it’s called candy coated and it’s 11 songs of lofi homo freakout music full of lovesick angst, transsexual despair and sex as self-harm. it’s aggressively queer and ranges from darkwave anthems to industrial explosions and goes to a lot of wild places, there’s even a song with cum in the title. there’s not enough trans and queer music in the world and hopefully this album makes that a little less true. i hope it makes you cry or makes you dance or makes you do a bit of both and that you love it, you can also get a limited edition cassette on bandcamp, links below, i hope you love it!!!

An informative piece on the electronic music pioneer Wendy Carlos. Worth a read if you dig electronic music and want to familiarize yourself with one of the musicians who helped establish and shape that genre. Carlos attended Brown University, double majored in Music and Physics, then went on to complete a master’s degree in music composition at Columbia University. Carlos’ formed a working relationship with Robert Moog (”the inventor of the first commercially available synthesizer” as the article puts it) which resulted in Moog introducing “touch-sensitive keys” into his synthesizers “allowing a similar level of dynamic expression to the pianos upon which they were based.”  After producer and singer Rachel Elkind heard one of Carlos’ renditions of Bach, Elkind helped Carlos produce what would become her debut album, ‘Switched-On-Bach’ (the release of which lead to the Moog synthesizer becoming a legitimate instrument and helped establish it’s popular use).  From the article: “Carlos says she chose Bach’s music because his flurries of notes would be easier to replicate on a primitive synthesizer than slower, more sustained orchestral pieces. Despite involving exceptionally complex circuitry, the early Moog synthesizers were monophonic, meaning they could only play one note at a time, and they were recorded, painstakingly, note by note, in analogue fashion. Each inch of tape contained up to eight manually spliced edits; altogether, the album took over 1,100 hours of work to complete.” .... “While the likes of the Beatles and Beach Boys had already used synths in pop songs by 1966, Switched-On Bach was the essential album in the first revolution of the synthesizer. It took the instrument out of the abstract realm of textures and avant-garde compositions, and made it sound harmonic, organic and instantly recognizable as music.” .... “Carlos brought classical music back into the present and the future of popular music. In 1969, Switched-On Bach reached number 10 on the Billboard 200; by 1986, it was the second classical album, and first-ever electronic album to go platinum, selling over a million copies in the U.S. In 1970, it won three Grammys, for Best Classical Album, Best Classical Performance—Instrumental Soloist and Best Engineered Classical Record. It was a genuine phenomenon and spawned leagues of long-forgotten imitation albums. But, on a much deeper level, through Switched-On Bach, the foundation of western classical music and harmony also became the foundation of global popular electronic music.” All the while, “Carlos had been working with the sexologist Harry Benjamin, whose work focused mostly on transgender patients.” “The success of “Switched-On Bach,” Grammys included, helped Carlos complete her transition and focus on her musical work. Carlos eventually came out, and as such she became the first openly trans woman with a Grammy — three, to be exact. After that breakthrough album she kept rising to new heights, scoring the films A “Clockwork Orange,” “The Shining,” and “Tron.” That success set an important precedent for trans artists in the industry.” Note: some of my above biography was lifted from the second article linked to below. Giving credit where it’s due because attribution is important.

also about my eyebrow: it’s bandaged because my piercing is still healing. the bandage is for when i’m sleeping so my piercing doesn’t get caught on anything and to help with the healing process 🙏

Also, please don’t say “Arca” or “Gerad Way” because they’re nonbinary and will be in a separate poll.
Please give me more musicians for a part 3.

~1 month on Testosterone:
Findings:
I have ambient tension in my larynx throughout the day. It’s not bad, I’m just more aware of the inner front of my throat than usual. I presume these are growing pains, but I will talk to my teacher and doctor about it this week. In the meantime I’m trying to hydrate and stretch my neck muscles. Everyone has now confirmed that my speaking voice sits lower. I’m not as worried about it as I thought I would be.
So far, I have lost only about a third on the top, which is not as dire as I thought it would be by this time. Expecting to lose more in the coming days.
I have also gained about a half step on the bottom! Hoping to gain more in the coming days!
Most interestingly, the break between my head and chest voice remains in the exact same place (albeit MUCH harder to control. I am working HARD to maintain flexibility, especially descending/switching from head to chest) while about one fifth of what used to be the top of my head voice is now all whistle tone. It’s all still there, just in a completely different register.
My entire range has gotten heavier/louder.
Fatigue sets in a lot earlier than it used to, but it varies from day to day, I think depending on how much I used it the previous day. Three days ago I could only sing for about 10 minutes. Two days ago I could sing for over an hour just fine (church gigs). Yesterday I could barely sing at all :( and today I went a solid 30 minutes.
More data to come!
