"Rogers!!! Are those handprints???!!!"
They’re all gathered in the communal showers after the mission, washing out the stink of lizard guts. Tony looks up in the middle of peeling ooze out of his hair as Steve is shucking the bottom half of his uniform and Tony absently registers the handprints bruising his hips, finger marks wrapped around them towards the front, the imprint of palms on Steve’s back overlapping his ass, and much darker on the left side. He flicks the goo away, then stands up to take his turn in the showers. He takes a step, then stops. He pivots rapidly, ogling Steve’s bare, bruised hips.
“Rogers!” he shouts.
Steve twists around at his waist, holding a towel in front of him. “What?”
“Are those handprints?” Tony demands.
Steve glances down briefly at his ass. “Yes.”
Tony splutters for a second. “From someone standing behind you?!”
“Yes,” Steve repeats.
Barnes ducks into Tony’s eyeline and snaps a towel out between Steve and the others in the room. “Stop looking,” he says.
Tony gasps, then points at him. “Did you do that!” he shrieks.
“Duh,” Barnes replies. “Obviously. That's my ass, who else would be bruising it?”
“Not obviously!” Tony keeps yelling. "What does that mean, your ass?!"
“It means that's my ass,” Barnes repeats simply.
“That's true,” Steve adds.
“THAT'S AMERICA'S ASS!” Tony howls. “IN WHAT UNIVERSE IS IT OBVIOUSLY YOURS INSTEAD?!”
“It’s actually pretty obvious,” Clint throws in.
Tony gasps again, whipping around to look at him. Clint just shrugs. Tony looks at everyone else. Sam rolls his eyes like he’s not surprised and Natasha merely continues toweling her hair. Even Scott, Maria, and Carol look at him as if he should have known about this already. Carol!!! Who has only been an Avenger for two months!!! Carol knew Captain America was being fucked by the Winter Soldier???
Tony snaps to attention, stalking into the shower area.
“Banner!” he yells. “Did you know Steve and the Terminator are gay?!”
“Yes!” Bruce answers from inside his stall.
“What!” Tony inhales sharply, voice bouncing once again on the tiled walls of the locker room. “Thor?!” he demands, not sure he wants to know the answer.
Thor pokes his head out. “I have seen evidence firsthand,” he says.
Tony’s jaw drops again; he didn't want to know that answer. “First what?”
“Firsthand,” Thor repeats. “As in I once witnessed the two of them engaging in coitus.”
“You watched them fucking?” Tony yells more.
“I participated,” Thor answers calmly. “We spit-roasted the Captain, I believe is the term.”
“I was in his boy pussy!” Barnes calls from the other room. “And it was an Eiffel Tower!”
“What is the difference?” Thor asks curiously.
“The high five,” Barnes explains, lifting a hand.
Steve slaps his palm but Barnes interlaces their fingers after. Tony’s jaw drops.
“No high five, that’s a spit roast,” Barnes explains, metal fingers still folded together with Steve's in the air.
“Oh, I see!” Thor answers.
Barnes drops his hand, but Steve does not release it. Instead, he stands on one foot to lean closer and he smacks a kiss onto Barnes's cheek. Tony just looks between Steve, Barnes, and Thor, speechless and mouth open.
“I think that’s a record,” Natasha says.
“Of what?” Steve asks.
“Stark not talking.”
“PUSSY?” Tony bellows in disbelief. “BOY PUSSY?!”
Barnes glances at Steve, frowning. “Aren’t you out?”
“I think I forgot to tell Tony,” Steve responds, then leans over the towel Barnes is still holding in front of him. “Tony, I’m a trans man!”
Tony shrieks again. He forgoes the shower and storms naked out of the locker room, laughed out by the whole team except Bruce and Thor.

sonic au/fan story? Where Sonic lost his superspeed and Shadow met other Sonic and his friends in a parallel universe
I’ll drop some sketches here because why not
Girl on the first pic is my fan character, Verse the Hedgehog, her full name is Verse O’Tyle. Sonic reminds Verse of her siblings in a way, and I like to imagine them both chilling somewhere on a hill.
She is a “chill girl surrounded by chaos” - and chaos is her crazy af family. Her siblings are on a third pic: brother Leaph and cousin Snowflake. Leaph loves jumping, he leaps high as possible, and hides in a trees, causing Verse to search for him for hours lol. And Snowflake is overall quiet girl, shy and cute. Her quills are too soft which hurts a lot, that’s why she only wears gloves and really soft shoes. Snowflake usually just follows Leaph everywhere. There is also Verse’s mother and uncle but I got no pics of them yet
Shadow the Hedgehog
So the whole AU idea is that chaos energy around has risen, because of it an accident has happened with Sonic, and Shadow and Sonic had a brief fight during which all the negative emotions and stuff snapped Shadow’s inhibitor rings. It’s a REALLY long story short because there is more details to it.
but basically it caused all the Shadow’s energy go inside-out and this “Raw Chaos Energy” was still living in the past, unconsciously twisting everything around, and blaming everyone around (aka Sonic and his friends) for Maria’s death. Realising she was long dæd Raw Energy bends space-time to save her. This creates a parallel universe, where past!Shadow now has some of the “flashes” of future events with Maria’s and using it to save her. Also this form is like SUPER STRONG and the only reason Sonic survived it because before that Master Emerald had transferred some of its power to Knuckles just for a brief moment
so here is a sketch of Emerald/Raw Energy Knuckles

Not gonna go with much details because I might change a lot of that, but the whole idea is that in parallel universe where Maria had survived (even if for a few more decades only) Sonic didn’t get his super speed. It’s kinda to balance whole world out, because Maria had influenced people in a good way while she was living her full life
ANYWAY
remember the flashes I mentioned earlier? Shadow also saw Sonic and the others in those “flashy events” but he has no idea who tf they are, and later on he will try to find them because he started to have more and more dreams about them
here is Sonic and some of his friends
he never got blue because he never reach sonic speed and that’s why he is brown
I still didn’t pic a name for him, it makes sense for him to be Wendy (like a wind ig) but I don’t know how to make it unisex or something. I called him “Marcille” before because in Archie Comics he was called Maurice and I loved the way Marcille sounds lol
and yeah TRANS SONIC 🏳️⚧️🗣️🗣️ the original sonic is also trans but he is already comfortable with himself so
since sonic isn’t such a hero as he in a main universe, people here are way less united and there is more crime and bad people (mostly because people mistrust each other, so it’s not just about the super speed but specifically Sonic’s mentality)
and Amy in this universe is the one who tries to hold it all together, helping people by the cost of her own happiness
poor baby
Knuckles and Rouge exist here too but I have no pics of them yet, moving forward
TAILS!!
No one even know the guy named Tails and to be fair he doesn’t even exist. Miles, however, does but he is not with the main squad - after all he was never saved from that village and was constantly bullied for his two tails
as of now I don’t have any more sketches so here is my rattlesnake fan character from the same universe
this one is specifically from the main universe
colors on second one are the old one because I dig the new design more
she makes poison treatments and meds but her hobby is mechanics and stuff, she might be not good at it as Tails but she’s willing to learn

and some doodles

"What, no Wild Geese?" spiritually Wild Geese is here, tucked in section IV, which might a well be subtitled "The soft animal gets a treat", same with Song of Songs and so many psalms I couldn't pick one. I wanted to try to play with poems that were either new to me or a little further off the beaten track (although there are still some obvious picks but come on was I not going to get some Donne in there?). Frankly, this entire list could have been Emily Dickinson start to finish, it's not yet accepted historical fact that she was an inexplicable psychic witness to the sufferings of the Franklin Expedition but I am submitting my findings to journals as we speak
(sorry Jirv for all the Catholics and extremely suspect Anglicans!!)
I. SEEKING
Whenever I invoke "The Lamb" please know I am reading it with the same menace and sense of foreboding as Patti Smith. Given the vibe I'm trying to cultivate you'd think there would be more Blake, but I think Jirv has such a profoundly different experience with Church Authority and his own conversion experience that he and Blake hardly seem like they share the same faith. Even in a scenario where he managed to unclench, I can't see him espousing a sentiment like The Garden of Love. Maybe if he survived to reflect on his encounter with Koveyook he might groove more with "[Christ] is the only God ... and so am I and so are you."
The only section that has at least a few poets I think Jirv would actually read, namely Matthew Arnold-- the only poem on here that I think isn't very good, I'm sorry to Mr. Arnold but there we are, they were right to light your ass up in Punch. He's here however because I think his work captures a very clear and immediately accessible sense of the early Victorian man striving to be himself, in the sense that he can flower fully into the model of upstanding sober bourgeois middle-class manhood which isn't always attainable for later birth-order sons in a navy overcrowded with officers. The real life Irving's letters touched me very much in that he is both looking for a deeper connection with God, a better version for himself, and in the material world, a way to make enough money to establish himself as capital-R Respectable in a way that swashbuckling at sea or derring-do in the colonies doesn't really allow him. I actually don't know if the years line up for him to have read Longfellow but this stanza:
O fear not in a world like this, And thou shalt know erelong, Know how sublime a thing it is To suffer and be strong.
Is such a classic mid 19th century "making yourself miserable for ideological reasons" motto. Shades of "Invictus" (which for some reason I don't know if Jirv would vibe with, maybe more of a Crozier poem).
I think you could also call the first section "Voyages", I was struck by how often the real Irving was compelled to relocated to try and make a place for himself in the world in the literal, material sense, and the few letters we have are largely his thoughts on his spiritual seeking-- I was very surprised not to find a settled and secured ticket-to-Heaven holder but someone who still considers himself a student, is still wrestling and grasping and looking for something.
Prithee, Pilgrim, go not hence; Clear thy brow, and white thy hand, What shouldst thou with penitence? Wherefore seek to Holy Land? Stern the whisper on his lip: Sin and shame are in my scrip.
It feels a little much to say 'Jirv is the Galahad of their doomed Grail quest' but frankly, given that no one succeeds, I kind of like the idea of a failed Galahad. It's slightly ahistorical to invoke but once we get into the 1860s and the mid-Victorian chivalric revival Galahad becomes a potent symbol for a kind of chaste imperial knighthood in service to God/Queen/Country. At least one young office who died in WWI was named Galahad, not just a PG Wodehouse joke christening.
II. CRISIS
Obviously there are ten thousand things that could torment the evangelical protestant mind and bedevil one's self-worth and it doesn't have to be "hopelessly in love with your best friend" but I wasn't going to miss a chance for some Housman, was i? Wyatt gives us the money couplet:
I desire to perish, and yet I ask health. I love another, and thus I hate myself.
I had included Flecker's We That Were Friends but felt it was just slightly too self-aware, ditto Rosetti's Winter: My Secret.
III. STRIFE
I think these are all pretty self-explanatory. I could have added ten more Emily Dickinson poems because she is the only one on this earth who gets it (me, the deal, the whole of existence). Hopkins I think is more concerned with the sins of the world than the real life Irving (who, based on the very limited material shared, must be the most laid-back and chill evangelical in human history? Or maybe I spent too long among the Baptists) but I can see Jirv wondering, in the God-proof bunker of his diary, why the wicked are flourishing while he is losing his everloving mind and threatening to lock up ABs for being afraid of ghosts.
Here is the excerpted Khayyam so you don't have to go looking (although you should because its wall to wall bangers) (context: the narrator is standing in a potter's shed, and listening to the vessels talk amongst themselves)
LXXXIV. Said one among them— "Surely not in vain My substance of the common Earth was ta'en And to this Figure molded, to be broke, Or trampled back to shapeless Earth again." LXXXV. Then said a Second—"Ne'er a peevish Boy Would break the Bowl from which he drank in joy; And He that with his hand the Vessel made Will surely not in after Wrath destroy." LXXXVI. After a momentary silence spake Some Vessel of a more ungainly Make; "They sneer at me for leaning all awry: What! did the Hand then of the Potter shake?"
"Did you make me just to smash me, God?"
Runners-up for this section included Rossetti's The Three Enemies, which only didn't make the cut because I think its slightly uneven compared to the rest of this work and this list has become pretty Rossetti-heavy. Ditto De Profundis.
IV. ACCEPTANCE
Also pretty self-explanatory. Mystical union with Christ or a very special sergeant of the marines, or both! Is it canon? No! But I like to think that even just one time...
If you read any poem on this list please read 'Love (III)' and 'The Finder Found', the latter of which is my 'Wild Geese'. It seems self-serving to say I cried when I read it but I did. Meanwhile Herbert is goated and his entire work could be listed here but hearing Love (III) read aloud made me understand what poems could do.
I cheated putting two Glück poems for one but given that they were published together in that magazine I think its ok. Here's even more cheating: The Undertaking would be in there if I could squeeze it on the same line. "The darkness lifts, imagine, in your lifetime" PLEASE
Runners-up here were Larkin's First Sight, which just doesn't quite fit but I love for the sense of spring coming to someone who doesn't know there's anything other than winter deprivation, and A Shropshire Lad XI (On your midnight pallet lying) which I LOVE but again doesn't quite jive with the theme, but I do imagine it as a bridge poem between this section and the last...
V. DOOM
A little bit of Browning, who might squeak in under the line of plausibility (though perhaps not this poem) as Jirv sets out on the death march with waning faith that is not, in fact, a death march but then his journey ends in Stabtown, population: YOU. "The Plate" in this case would be that faith and knowledge of being loved that remains even after hardship and the final lost battle, maybe even literally in the meat from his stomach. But misery and death put all the men on the rack and instead of salvation they are essentially tortured to death, often long enough to crush/squeeze out any semblance of humanity and leaving the animal capacity for violence.
"Futility" could encompass the whole sorry venture but in specific the shot of Jirv's body after all the effort to make contact with someone would could help. Was it for this? "Exposure" also a strong contender for "the long slow process of freezing to death for unclear reasons".
"Flock" of course-- God needs martyrs.
#I'm not pretentious enough to call it an anthology but I suppose technically....#anyways. Hey, I saw you talking about reading The Haunting of Hill House via a trans lens and I got curious. Could you elaborate on that, please? Cause I found it really interesting.
yeah I can! I've been meaning to write some sort of article about why I feel Hill House is trans, so this is a good excuse to get these thoughts written out. It's mostly that I find the story and its themes to be very trans to me, specifically with the character of Eleanor; when I was a teen and didn't know I was trans, and I found myself drawn to her for reasons I couldn't understand yet. There are a lot of things about her that spoke to me as a pre egg-crack trans woman; the way she feels like she's been waiting her whole life for something, anything, but she doesn't know what; the way she's felt trapped by the expectations of her; the way she's so shy and withdrawing (she reminds me in a way of this quote from Imogen Binnie's Nevada: "Maria is transsexual and she is so meek she might disappear"); the ways in which Eleanor constantly feels out of touch with the people around her and can't figure out social situations; the ways she's never felt wanted ("I am a sort of stray cat aren't I?"); the way she is prone to misreading casual relationships because she isn't experienced enough to know she's mistaken; and especially how she so desperately wants to belong. Eleanor is so withdrawn and desperate for connection that she lets the House take her over because, at last, “something is at last really, really, really, happening to [her]”, and unfortunately I could relate to that; she's so desperate to belong that she'll let anything happen to her, even if it kills her.
One line in particular really speaks to me every time I reread the book: “—and then each year, one summer morning, the warm wind would come down the city street where she walked and she would be touched with the little cold thought: I have let more time go by.” To me, that's what it felt like pre realization, every year would go by and I'd feel like I'd missed something; I wouldn't know what, but I'd know I'd let more time go by. Eleanor's story is one of a person who's been waiting so long to make a change, that when a change finally happens, it's too late for her; she's waited too long, and she's out of time. It's rather bleak, but so is gender dysphoria.
I think for me ultimately, any story about a woman who feels trapped and out of touch in some way will feel trans to me (I have a Letterboxd list about that with all sorts of movies on it), but Hill House really sticks out to me because of how acute and specific Eleanor's pain is, and how relatable I found her; her pain feels very transfeminine to me in ways I'm not quite sure how to articulate. I've found a lot of other transfems on tumblr who are also very drawn to Hill House, and in a way its very nice to see us all have a special connection to this book.
also part of this realization came from this post!
#can you tell I've been wanting to get into writing? is it obvious by how much I've written here? encourage me to use the substack i opened#the haunting of hill house#the haunting 1963#shirley jackson#trans#transfem#trans book#trans novel#trans art#pheobe.txt 2024#asks#nevada imogen binnie#writing#trans tag

Hello!
I am looking to improve my writing / creative thinking by writing x reader imagines and headcanons for the characters I like! I might also be interested in writing shorts if you provide a prompt that catches my attention. Other than that, I will reblog various fanworks that i find cool and that inspire me!
I want this blog to be male and/or gender neutral reader focused, which is why i wont be taking requests for female readers :(
Minors interacting with my nsfw posts will be blocked.
If youre interested, you can read below the cut for more details:
I will do...
- romantic, platonic or family dynamics/relations
- trans headcanons, otherwise queer headcanons
- both sfw and nsfw, various kinks included
- readerxcanon
... but I won't do...
- extreme kinks; I will generally reserve the right to deny a request if it includes a fetish/sexual scenario i dont want to write about
- incest and/or harmful paraphilia
- yandere reader/character and associated themes (kidnapping, stockholm syndrome, torture etc.)
... and i am currently writing for the following fandoms and characters:
RESIDENT EVIL:
- Ethan Winters
- Leon Kennedy
- Luis Serra
- Rebecca Chambers
- Albert Wesker
- Carlos Oliveira
- Ashley Graham
- Ingrid Hunnigan
SILENT HILL:
- Harry Mason
- James Sunderland
- Maria (SH2)
- Pyramid Head
LIKE A DRAGON / YAKUZA:
If you do want to make a request, please include some details such as readers gender/pronouns, setting/scenario and character it includes - the more the better :) thank you for reading!
- pretty much every noteworthy male character from y0 to y7 (including Ishin!), ask for the girls :) im including the judgement series in this as well.
My writing depicts my own interpretation of the characters - I cant promise a 100% accurate portrayal, but I will do my best to keep it somewhat faithful

Hey guys, it's Emily. Yep, been awhile. If you look at this pic and compare to some past ones of me you'll notice I've lost some weight (except in my tits). I don't know if you think I look better at this weight on my more usual, more curvy self and maybe I do, but I don't FEEL better. I'll be honest, all these changes for Studio M (and I'll pile on - Marti, write the damn thing! 🤗😘) had me really, really concerned. I mean, these ladies are my family and I felt it falling apart; besides, I was afraid of being left behind by Marti and the other girls leaving but also didn't want to leave my friends and lovers here at Studio M. It was Roxy who brought me the news: PACK UP, JOKESTER, YOU'RE MOVING TO THE MOUNTAINS! And so I have. And though I probably get 4th billing, being 4th behind Marti, Mirren, and Maria is nothing to be embarrassed about! I'm settled up in these hills now and am trying to put some of my old weight back on - maybe some will go to my boobs?!
And now I have to give Maria a bit of a hard time for leaving some very important people off her list of those who have moved or will move to the Appalachians with us. First there's Daphne and Wendy: who can have a film studio without makeup and wardrobe, right? And then there's Dana: from managing the full Studio M staff as a Site Director, she was still very happy to move with Marti; the two helped make each other and it would be stupid from a business standpoint to separate them. Dana is still managing the day to day busy of the Mountain Studio (as we call it). And, of course, Dana wasn't leaving without her wife, Gail. Some of you may recall that Gail is second only to Marti in boobs size (she's now an N cup) and looks nearly as big because she's such a small woman (married to 6/1½" Dana). However, Gail only did one photo or video session a month because her love is her garden and our home. Gardening will be different up here compared to Florida, but her love for Dana exceeds anything else. Besides, she's thinking she might do more modeling and maybe even show up here. You can't miss her: the biggest damn areolas any of us have ever seen.
As for those left behind, I'll miss Willow the most, but I've been assured that she'll be the next to come up once things have settled and are growing. Vera is going more and more to mainstream modeling with her fabulous legs. July is now the manager in charge of all makeup and wardrobe for Studio M. Becca has taken Gail's place running the homestead. Zin is a major model with the sudio and doesn't want to leave her now very happy mother, Becca. Don't be surprised if Chelsea comes up here soon to join Mirren to give us her voluptuous and hung trans body to compliment Mirren's cross dressing and incredible cock. Risa will continue to be the straight porn star she is for Studio M. Mandy will be the second girl we'll poach from Studio M after Willow. And last, of course, Michelle will stay with her now 400+ men: I think that's a lifetime commitment, and she LOVES it. (About the men we've introduced here; I'll let someone else write about their status.)
So here I am, a mountain woman. I've never lived anywhere but Florida. It's gonna be a change but, WTF, to live with Marti and the rest is worth way more than some homesickness. Now that I know I'm part of this family still, I've actually gained a few pounds. Not sure what I'll look like the next time I post.
Love you guys who keep following us through the changes - and all you new ones who have come to stay awhile.
Emily

George & Maria

way too late with this, so i'm really sorry to that anon who asked me about my headcanons for them ages ago... but since it's the anniversary of MOTHER 1, i figured i should finally sit down and do it! :D
So, without further ado, here's my own personal take on George and Maria, the two who started it all...
[As always, this is all my own vision for these characters, it differs a lot from other interpretations and since I'm particularly interested in them I kinda go off the rails with it. Hope it's enjoyable!]
So, things begin with Maria! She was the daughter of a fairly wealthy family, born on the later side of the 1800s in a rural part of Eagleland. She was kind, outgoing, positive to a fault, and well-liked by everyone in the town she lived in. She hosted most of the town's events and celebrations, most often at her family's estate, and no one was excluded.
Also, she was trans. This was something of an open secret, although she never talked about it, and most of the locals considered it impolite to gossip about. But since she'd been in the public eye since she was a child, it wasn't something that went unnoticed.
George was an out-of-towner, who showed up one day and quietly settled in, accompanied by a friend of his (his personal doctor, apparently. This is a weird oc that just kinda came into existence naturally, and he just kept showing up afterward... really need to give him a proper name at some point). He was a quiet person, although he got along well with the people he spoke to. He never spoke of where he'd come from, or why he'd left there. Mostly he preferred to stay indoors and write (he was something of an aspiring poet).
He never really paid much attention to the affairs of Maria's family, but one day he just happened to overhear some passing gossip while in town, and what he heard astounded him. He immediately knew that he had to meet Maria himself.
George had never attended any of Maria's parties, not being one for large social events, but he made sure to attend the next one as soon as he could. It was there that the two finally met. George was immediately captivated by her, and the more he spoke with her, the more he knew he was in love. She loved the way he spoke and looked at the world, and she wanted them to keep talking as long as they could.
The whole party passed, people left, until it was just the two of them. They were still talking and now, privately, George could finally reveal his own secret, too.
George was like Maria in a number of ways. However, he'd struggled far more with his own identity than she had. His family hadn't accepted him, had tried to force him into being someone he couldn't be, and so he left. Besides Maria, the only other person who knew about his secret was his doctor, a close friend of his who he'd always confided in. He'd had little hope he'd ever find anyone else who could understand, but he'd never even considered there might be someone else like him.
By the end of that night, they were already in love. They met more and more after that, never wanting to be without the other's company. He loved the way she sang, she loved to help him with his poems. She loved to tease him and say that he looked just like a penguin. When they went into town together, everyone wondered how this strange, quiet man from out of town had captured Maria's heart so well. Eventually, they were married, and after their daughter Rosie was born, they decided to move to a small, quiet town further away.
Just at the edge of the town of Mother's Day/Podunk, they built a small house on top of a hill (George's doctor came with them of course, as loyal as always. He moved into his own house just a short walk away, at the bottom of the hill). And so they lived there, husband and wife, their daughter growing up, and everything was happy.
When Rosie was about 8, a shadow fell over the town. Things lifted off the ground and flew across the room, animals went wild, and people vanished from their homes without a trace. When the morning came, George and Maria were gone.
Unfortunately, I think I'm gonna have to split this post. There's still plenty of George and Maria's story left to tell, and I think there's too much to get into in just one part. (also i still have some things i wanna work out for giygas...)
In any case, that's the story of how George and Maria met, right before everything goes wrong and the course of history is changed forever! I really love thinking about how many things turn out the way they do because of these two people. Without them, Giygas wouldn't have turned out the way he did, without Giygas, Porky would never have gone down that path, and without Porky...
So I've become super attached to my interpretations of these characters, and I really love giving them a larger spotlight. ^^
Hope this was fun! And happy 35th anniversary to MOTHER 1! :D
#mother 1#mother series#george mother 1#maria mother 1#queen mary mother 1#emilyramblings#i really love just going wild with my interpretations for mother 1#the game being so simple in its presentation opens up so many possibilities for creativity#i think you really get to make it your own#and i think that's beautiful#hope you enjoyed this romantic story of queer love in 1900 america tune in next time for alien abductions and magic cloud kingdoms

MOVIES I WATCHED THIS WEEK # 215:
2 OSCAR-NOMINATED GERMAN DRAMAS:
🍿 NEVER LOOK AWAY (2018) is an epic (3+hrs) drama diving into German history and art history, my second by "Florian Maria Georg Christian Graf Henckel von Donnersmarck". (He was born 20 years to the day after me - and his first Very Important Work was 'The life of others').
The first act is oppressive and intellectually-dense, as it tells of a beautiful young woman in the Third Reich who's lucky enough to hand Hitler a bouquet of flowers when his motorcade passes through Dresden, but who's later diagnosed as schizophrenic, so she gets sterilized and mercy-killed by the Nazis. It's dark and tragic, and hard to take.
But then the film shifts gears into a biopic of her little nephew who grows up to be a painter, loosely-based on the real and famous artist Gerhard Richter (still alive today at 93). Through 20 or 30 years of inner turmoils he finds his artistic truth, by harking back to his early memories of the aunt. This is the weaker part of the story. The movie was the only second German movie that was nominated for two Oscars, but in spite of its vast ambitions, felt too uneven.
With the magnetic Paula Beer as his muse. 7/10.
🍿 EVERYTHING WILL BE OK (2015) is about an 8-yo girl whose divorced father picks from her estranged mom, for his bimonthly visits. Things seem normal at first - but they aren't. Desperation & heartbreak - I know them so well! 8/10.
🍿
KUROSAWA + SHAKESPEARE X 2:
🍿 First watch: The first of Kurosawa's three Shakespeare adaptations, THRONE OF BLOOD takes Macbeth and transports it into feudal Japan. It's the gold standard of five-star entertainment. Toshiro Mifune in top form, the delusional husband of a manipulative Lady Macbeth in Noh white-face. Murderous ambition brings tragic consequences. Filmed on Mt. Fuji in the fog, and (in the final scene) shot with real arrows. (Photo Above).
🍿 RAN, his re-imagining of 'King Lear', a magnificent epic with breathtaking cinematography, made when he was 75. What if Shakespeare was transported to 1985 and was present at a large screen performance of it, with English translation. I wonder how he would react. My majestic viewing of the week.
I've already seen his Hamlet adaptation, 'The Bad Sleep Well', a few years ago. (With the wedding scene that inspired the one at the beginning of 'The Godfather').
🍿
"...Life can be bright in America / If you can fight in America / Life is all right in America / If you're a white in America..."
WEST SIDE STORY (1961), another unorthodox, iconic Shakespeare interpretation, a musical adaptation of 'Romeo and Juliet'. It played out in the Upper West side of Manhattan, between a gang of young Polish delinquents and a gang of (brown-face) Puerto Ricans. The five classic numbers ('Maria', 'America', 'Tonight', 'I feel pretty' and 'Somewhere') were the highlights of the plot. A dazzling love story between a boy and a girl, written by four gay men (Robbins, Bernstein, Sondheim and Laurents) in the ultra-conservative mid-50's, it unapologetically included "Anybodys", an early non-binary trans character.
The Spielberg 2021 version was even brighter.
🍿
I heard good things about the 1996 LAST MAN STANDING, in that it is a remake of Kurosawa's 'Yojimbo'. But then I heard wrong, because Walter Hill is no Kurosawa, Bruce Willis is definitely no Toshiro Mifune, and this sad, cliche-ridden story had nothing in it that merited a watch. Even the Ry Cooder score, and the scar-faced Christopher Walken couldn't save it from itself. 2/10 is too generous.
Next: Welles 'Chimes at Midnight'.
🍿
"On the rung of employment, it's beneath taxidermy, it's beneath bellhop... Bellhops get uniforms..."
THE PARKING LOT MOVIE (2010) is a terrific, joyful documentary about a group of "insanely over-educated people working at a service sector job", i.e. students and graduates from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, many from the departments of Anthropology or Philosophy. Most are eccentric slacker-intellectuals and they put in their time at this small, independent corner parking lot as attendants / ticket-takers. One of the guys [I didn't realize it - but they were all guys!] ended up playing the bass for 'Yo La Tengo'. An oddball, entertaining and feel-good gem. This was the only movie directed by this Meghan Eckman. I wonder what other quirky wonders could she make, if this movie had became well-known. Highly recommended - 8/10. [*Female Director*] I discovered it via Kevin Kelly's Livestream.
🍿
3 DANISH THRILLERS:
🍿 KING'S GAME (2004) a Danish political thriller and my 3rd by Nikolaj Arcel. It's a traditional plot, seen many times before in various forms, about a new parliamentary journalist who cares too much about the truth for his own sake, and who discovers a conspiracy perpetuated by a politician at the Danish 'Folketing' who's about to become the next Prime Minister. Power struggles and the corruption of ideals but with a Scandinavian bent. With two smaller roles by my favorite Danish actors Nicolas Bro, as a background 'stringer' and Lars Brygmann as a helpless, depressed husband. 4/10.
🍿 THE ELEVATOR (2021), a 4 minute horror-thriller about a young man who is stuck in an elevator. 8/10.
More from the Danish-Bulgarian Toni Genov, 2088, a very low-budget "Computer-screen" thriller, [Like 'Searching' and 'Missing'] with two physicists in the year 2088 discussing the sudden disappearance of a college.
🍿
When I saw Bertrand Tavernier's dark 'Coup de Torchon' last week, I wasn't aware that it wasn't his first existential period drama with Philippe Noiret and Isabelle Huppert. THE JUDGE AND THE ASSASSIN (1976) also starred the mesmerizing Noiret as a complicated authority figure and Huppert as his 23-yo, mistreated mistress. This is a beautiful, strange and multi-layered story which was based on a real-life serial killer from the end of the 19th century. He was an insane vagabond who cruelly raped and murdered dozens of teenagers, as he was drifting around the countryside. Noiret however is an ambitious and duplicitous judge, and the plot drifts in and out from their cat-and-mouse pursuit into one describing a larger society in flux, a system of corrupt justice that is far from just, and morals that are complex, unclear and though-provoking.
(I also started watching his tremendous last work, 'My Journey through French Cinema', but at nearly 4 hours long, I'm still in the middle of, so I'll log it next week.)
🍿
TWILIGHTS (1994) are the surrealistic adventures of a young Japanese boy, maybe a ghost, who died at 3 o'clock of the 3rd of the month, but refuses to accept his own death, so he keeps running away from it. It's a 33-minute silent movie slapstick comedy, with endless modern cinematic tricks.
The final, extended 4-minute long shot (starting at 25:45) is alone worth the price of admission.
🍿
"David Lynch's Office Space..."
I'm waiting for the end of Season 2 of SEVERANCE, so that I can binge-watch it all in one gulp, as Dog intended. I have a general fond recollection of the first season, while not remembering any of the details from it, and so I re-watched the pilot, GOOD NEWS ABOUT HELL. ♻️.
I'm surprised that I only gave it a mediocre review in 2022: Apple’s new, much-lauded and compelling series, a speculative sci-fi mystery box, where weird conspiracies stay purposefully unexplained. Dystopian exploration of office life with sinister sense of Scientology-related cultist oppression (added no doubt by the Tom Cruise-lookalike main actor). With John Turturro, Christopher Walken, and Patricia Arquette, and a terrific final episode. It was very bingeable, but I doubt I’ll join them for the second season next year. (The Opening Credits Were Good). 5/10.
I think I may appreciate the new Season more.
🍿
The upcoming biopic 'Mr. Burton' (about Richard) doesn't look like it's gonna be any good, but I thought I'll try Welsh director Marc Evans' highest-rated previous film, SNOW CAKE from 2006. However, this TV-drama type romance was mediocre and predictable. Depressed Alan Rickman gives a lift to an eccentric youngster who dies when a truck crushes into them. He visits her mother Sigourney Weaver to apologize, and discovers that she's a high-functioning autistic woman living alone in a small town in snowy Ontario, Canada. Not knowing much about ASD, it felt like a stretch, not representing the impairment with any accuracy. 3/10.
🍿
LOST KUBRICK: THE UNFINISHED FILMS OF STANLEY KUBRICK (2007), a trifle documentary that focused mostly on his Napoleon and Holocaust projects. Malcolm McDowell narrated.
🍿
THE INDUSTRIAL-MILITARY COMPLEX / INTERNATIONAL ARM TRADE X 2:
🍿 THE INEXTINGUISHABLE FIRE (1969), my first by German Harun Farocki, an experimental anti-establishment documentarian and Brechtian theorist. This is an essay that examines the process of scientific R&D at a Dow Chemical factory, as they research and manufacture Napalm, to be used in Vietnam.
"First you’ll close your eyes to the images, then to the memory, then to the facts, then to the whole story...”
🍿 "War is a racket. It always has been."
The documentary SHADOW WORLD should have been catnip for people like me. It investigates the immense, secret profits of the international arm trade, the massive corruption and collusion between politics and industry, the need for a state of Permanent War to sustain a trillion dollar pipeline of death and destruction, and how fake are the public perception of 'security' and 'democracy'.
But with so much footage to support it, the movie just pulls random clips from all over the place, all covered by ominous soundtrack, and jumps from one phrase to another, from one postulate to another without any rhyme or reason. Also, even though it came out in 2016, it mostly re-litigates the war crimes perpetuated before and after 9/11. So it brings together Prince Bandar, the Iran-Contra scandal, Jeremy Scahill, Cheney's Halliburton, Obama Nobel Peach speech, Bush Jr. shoe thrower, Lawrence Wilkerson's Mea Culpa, The despicable Margaret Thatcher Tony Blair and other anti-heroes of the roaring 80's and 90's. It was just terrible. 1/10.
It was my first by Belgian documentarian Johan Grimonprez. I still want to find his FOUR CHAMBERS TO THE HEART (about Renaissance master-painter Sofonisba Anguissola!) - but I will probably skip now his Oscar-nominated 'Soundtrack to a Coup d’État'!
🍿
THE DRIVER'S SEAT (1974) was an off-beat Italian turkey, starring Elizabeth Taylor as a high-strung, insane spinster, looking for someone in Rome who will murder her. I learnt about it on an intriguing r/truefilm thread, but it was too demented for me. ⬇️Could Not Finish⬇️
🍿
2 BY DUTCH ANIMATOR NINA GANTZ:
🍿 Her latest, 'Wander to Wonder', is nominated for this year's Oscars. Her ZALIGER (2010) is a perfect B&W linocut-style short about a widower who still thinks about his wife.
🍿 EDMOND (2015) is a weird portrait of an awkward, suicidal man, possibly with cannibalistic tendencies dealing with his social anxiety.[*Female Director*]
🍿
2 SPANISH SHORTS BY ALBERT PINTÓ:
🍿 NOTHING CO. (2014) is a brilliant black comedy: After 3 years of unemployment, a very short desperate man gets a job offer where he must sit alone in a chair and do nothing. "Do as you're told and collect a paycheck."
🍿 THERE'S STILL TIME (2014) is a young person fantasy about a guy who was dumped by his girlfriend, and is now stuck in a time loop. Every time he comes back, he's multiplying. 2/10.
🍿
7+1 EARLY SHORTS OF GREAT DIRECTORS:
🍿 THE BANK NOTE (1907), my first by French Louis Feuillade, who was discovered by my crush Alice Guy-Blaché, and who went on to direct 800 (!) silent films, including the series of Fantômas and Les Vampires. This is a terrific story about a tramp who saves a robbery victim and receives as a reward a large note, which he can't redeem. Told perfectly in visuals - no need for any verbal explanation. 9/10.
🍿 THE BRIDGE (1929), the first silent film by Charles Vidor, (who went on to make 'Gilda'.) It's the first adaptation of Ambrose Bierce's "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" about a man about to be hanged during the Civil war, who sees his whole life flashing before him. I already seen the 1961 Oscar-winning French version. 8/10.
🍿 PEOPLE OF THE POE VALLEY (1947), Michelangelo Antonioni's very first documentary about the poor peasants and fisherman who live along the river. Neo-realism 1.0.
🍿 IT'S NOT JUST YOU, MURRAY (1964) was actually Martin Scorsese's second film [His first, 'What’s a Nice Girl Like You Doing in a Place Like This?' was way too puerile]. It's a solid Film School crime-comedy, with many of his later obsessions already pronounced. First time he used his mom Catherine, the Felliniesque mobster world view, the joy of abundance. 6/10. [I still haven't seen 'Boxcar Bertha'.]
🍿 Because I'm a completist, I watched Alexander Payne's very first film school short, CARMEN (1985), the only one of his I haven't seen before. It's an offensive, silent slapstick experiment about a drooling imbecile who works at a gas station in the desert. NO! 1/10.
🍿 The omnibus INCOHERENCE (1994) was Bong Yoon Ho's first production after film school. The unrelated episodes tells of 3 respected members of society, a teacher who reads 'Penthouse', a jogger who steals milk from doorsteps, and a drunk expert who has to take a shit in the street late at night. In the epilogue they all appear on a TV talk show, and seem as normal as everybody else would.
🍿 FORCED HILARITY (2001) on the other hand was a much better Edgar Wright short with thought balloons, an early Nick Frost appearance and one dramatic plot twist.
🍿 (Not exactly the first or great, but) CAKE (2017) with Maxine Peake. 2 well dressed women at a barren end-of-the-line road don't want to wait for Godot, so they discuss the best way to die. Artsy.
🍿
