Ninjago headcannons!!

These headcannons mostly focus on the ninja's gender, sexuality, and disorders, I'll probably make a seperate post talking about their interests.

Lloyd is questioning their gender since they haven’t had much time to explore themself. They allow their peers to use he/him pronouns, but they prefer they/them pronouns (spoiler alert: Lloyd is nonbinary). Lloyd is demiromantic and demisexual; they rarely fall in love, and if they do, it’s only with someone very close. They have PTSD, OCD, BPD, and depression.

Zane is nonbinary; he likes to use he/they pronouns and doesn’t like being referred to as a man. He is pansexual and asexual. Zane’s father has autism, and he programmed Zane to have many traits similar to himself, which led to Zane having autism. Zane is sensitive to loud noises and doesn’t like being touched; he is trying to build different settings for his senses to turn off his hearing or feeling of touch when overstimulated. Zane also struggles with amnesia, due to his memory being lost multiple times and him subconsciously deleting traumatic experiences from their mind. Zane has trouble remembering basic information and recalling traumatic events from the past.

Jay is genderfluid; he is fine with any pronouns and doesn’t feel restricted by gender norms. He is bisexual. He has ADHD and generalized anxiety disorder, which he takes medication for.

Kai is transgender; he was a biological girl when he was younger and began transitioning at age 19, he uses he/him pronouns. He is bisexual. Kai suffers from bipolar 1, which he was diagnosed with and is now taking medication for.

Cole is transgender; he was a biological girl when he was younger and began transitioning at age 18, he uses he/him pronouns; he and Nya were the people to help Kai figure out he was trans. Cole is gay and suffers from PTSD and anxiety. 

Nya is Transmasculine and uses both she/her and he/him pronouns; she is not planning to transition biologically but makes an effort to look like a man if she feels like it. Nya is bisexual and has anger issues.

Pixel is biologically genderless, but she feels as if she is female. She doesn’t feel restricted to gender norms and uses she/her pronouns. She suffers from depression since she has a more challenging time feeling joy due to the way she was programmed. She is pansexual and asexual.

Wyldfyr doesn’t care about her gender; she hasn’t made an effort to assign herself a label, and she doesn’t care what other people call her. She is omnisexual and has ADHD and anger issues.

Sora is genderfluid and uses any pronouns; they are a lesbian, has autism, and suffers from depression.

Arin is cisgender; he uses he/him pronouns and doesn’t like being called a girl. He is aro/ace and suffers from anxiety, PTSD, and depression.

Geo hasn’t thought about his gender since he never felt restricted by gender norms, and he just allowed people to refer to him as whatever they liked. He believes he is genderfluid but hasn’t put too much thought into it since he doesn’t feel the need to. He is omnisexual and suffers from anxiety and OCD.

Garmadon believes they are cisgender but secretly feels more connected with being nonbinary. They have repressed these feelings for most of their life since they were scared of the dysphoria they experienced every time someone called them a man. They are bisexual, Garmadon’s Oni form has ASPD, and struggles to feel empathy for others. However, they have slowly learned how to be kind to others after the crystalized season.

Master Wu is cisgender and a straight ally; he finds nonbinary and trans people interesting since these terms didn’t exist when he was younger. Wu strives to understand his diverse students and wants to support them in any way he can. His students are happy to answer most of his questions about gender and sexuality. Wu suffers from depression.

Misako is cisgender and a straight ally; she is slightly uncomfortable with the idea of new genders and sexualities since she doesn’t know too much about people like this. She wouldn’t fully support people with different sexualities and genders until she learned that Wu’s students were, in fact, not straight, and she started to learn more about different sexualities and genders. She is still a little uncomfortable with the whole idea but doesn’t want to be hateful toward her peers for who they are, so she makes an active effort to be as supportive as possible.

Everyone that knows me knows I love trans Kai hcs because trans Jay hcs make me uncomfy as a trans masc (it's bc of how the fandom has babied him which is actually a big problem in a lot of popular trans hcs for any media </3)

I think Kai has a more compelling arc as a trans man too.

Kai being left to raise Nya because his parents were kidnapped when they were really young, thusly he quite literally has to be the MAN of the household even when he still presented fem/didn't know he was trans and was just seen as the tomboy in his village. He fights even harder to become strong and to protect Nya, it's one of the only things he takes seriously in life.

Kai fights so fucking hard to be seen as not just a boy, but as a man during his teen years.

And then during the Garmadon is back and they're trying to figure out the Green Ninja prophecy arc he fights even harder to become the Green Ninja. He's fought so hard, why can't he be the chosen one? (Note the Morro parallels here because OOUGH... O O O U G G H H H H...) Why can't he be the one to defeat Garmadon? He's fought so hard his entire life for everything he ever wanted. But then Lloyd is the Green Ninja, and when Lloyd is questioning everything he has this great moment of awakening when he realizes that it's been pushed onto this fucking child who was just like him, fighting to be noticed, fighting to be loved, fighting to be seen as a man because LLOYD TRANS HCS ARE FIRE TOO and all of a sudden Kai needs to protect him too. (BECAUSE WAAAAAAAAA RBG SIBLINGS...)

Kai fights and fights to become stronger for others. And when Zane dies in season 3 and Kai joins the fight club, he fights because he wasn't strong enough to protect someone he loved. It's all he knows. Fight. Train. Feelings don't matter if you can punch them out. (Or flirt them out, which... doesn't work most of the time)

And then Kai meets Skylor, who is also just like him... but the opposite. Trans femme instead of trans masc. (Yes, I have Skylor transfer hcs too!) And while PIXAL was also trans (Yeah, another transfem, fight me about it), it's different when it's actually a person instead of... well - a robot. Or nb like Zane... And finally he starts to feel like maybe he's not alone. He seeks her out during the ToE and tries so hard to talk to her, but alas.

and then things fall apart I haven't watched season 4 in forever so i forget a lot of things that happen </3 I have so much more to add to this but for now I'm just gonna let it be because I HAVE TOO MANY THOUGHTS and need to REWATCH NINJAGO to put them down!

trans masc kai pride month headcanons!

since he was a little kid, Kai's been pissed off with gender roles. he was given a pretty gender neutral name and it always disappointed him when people would correct themselves after they called him a boy. it felt right when people assumed Kai was a boy

he didn't actually know that being transgender was a thing since he wasn't that educated, so he just decided he would be a boy and never looked back

he practiced talking in a deep voice and eventually learned to naturally talk with a masculine voice. he wore men's clothes and Nya always called him her older brother, so eventually people didn't even know he was trans at all

when he joined the ninja, the topic of his gender didn't come up at all until they were in a period of no missions and the conversation ended up there. Kai was in awe that there was a name for how he felt and that there were a ton of people like him. he told Nya as soon as possible. they had a little celebration <3

he ended up also using they/them pronouns after meeting PIXAL who used them as well. he liked that it was more ambiguous and using he/they pronouns made him more comfortable in how he dressed especially

he's absolutely OBSESSED with the cheesy trans slogans like "be yourself, they'll adjust" or weirdly intense shirts with swords on them and trans colors

they love how annoyed people get when they walk in a room because everyone assumes "oh, buff guy in a muscle tank" and then they have like seventeen different pronoun pins on

he absolutely abuses pride month privileges 100% "MOVE I'M TRANS"

they started testosterone as soon as they figured out what it was. they use patches because the idea of shots made them nervous and they can't hug people if they use gel :(

he was extremely loopy right after his top surgery and the other ninja have so many embarrassing videos of him

he talks completely unashamedly about what testosterone is changing for him because he's too damn proud to shut up about it

after a long, long while they started letting their hair grow out more because while they really like it long, they didn't like the misgendering that came along with it. after being on t for so long and getting top surgery, though, they finally got comfortable with it again and rock a mullet most of the time :D

he basically became the trans-guru of the group. Lloyd comes to him whenever he gets gender dysphoria and they go clothes shopping. Kai lets him pick out whatever makes him feel good. Lloyd talks him into getting another crop top every. single. time.

fucking so hard with the idea that aaron minyard’s med student friends are all trans and they adopted him because they thought he was too. that dude dresses in the exact tboy getup hoodie and all and nobody wanted to ask directly and borderline homophobic aaron who is only even partially aware that trans people exist does not realise this for like. three years. but there have been times when he should like when his shirt came up with his hoodie and his friend asked where the scars went and he assumed they were referring to scars from injuries and just went ‘they faded’, or when a friend started dating someone new asked aaron for advice about letting the person know they were trans but only phrased it as ‘a tricky conversation’ and aaron was like oh right ok he’s asking me about telling people you used to like crack. or maybe he’s killed someone too that’s a tough one to bring up casually idk if i can help here

Some Trans-coded moment I could find in Kai's episode because Pixar really did not let Disney stop them:

When Kai sees the softball team for the first time we get a close zoomed in shot on Taylor and Yuwen. This emphasizes two things: that the team is co-ed, and that there is a black girl on the team, someone Kai can relate to and maybe look up to in that I wish I looked like you kind of way

No one in Kai's family refers to to her by pronouns or descriptors like "my son" or "my daughter" until later, once she's already on the team.

The close up shot of the photo of Kai with a trophy has 3 other kids in frame, all of them looking like stereotypical boys. It's hinted at that the team Kai was playing on before was not co-ed, and so this would be an all boys team. This and a photo of Kai up to bat with short hair in a blue shirt are the photos she hides.

From the scene of them all cheering Kai's name at the beginning, I almost thought that was the first time it was said in the episode - it's not. The first time her dad says it in the car. Interesting!

Rest under the cut cause this is a fairly big post and also spoilers for the rest of Kai's episode!

The whole "but you were so good at baseball!" scene - just, you actually can't take the trans coding out of that scene if you tried. "Nothing can change the fact that I love you" . To break it down specifically, the line but you were so good at baseball feels similar to the idea of like "but you were fine as a boy!". It's the kind of statement that sounds like the question "why do you need to change?". This is continued in the next scene with the you liked baseball!, which can be read as a continuation of a worried parent "why do you need to change, i thought you liked yourself before?" they don't even pitch the same - "there are some serious changes here" I feel like read from a different angle it could also be about voices, and how sometimes how your voice sounds can be a source of dysphoria.

Kai wears pink socks for almost every scene she's in around her teammates i think? Blue crocs in the beginning, white socks in the "so you want to switch to uh softball?" scene, and then in the next scene she's in pink socks with a white stripe. The only scene in the episode with blue socks is after she hurts her ankle, when she's tell her dad "it's not a big deal" about the cheating.

Her hair getting longer, obviously <3 She's got a rainbow hairband she wears for the rest of the episode

The vaguely trans-flag looking lighting whenever Kai's floating

"We look so good! We look so good!!" "Hey girls, say pickles!" That scene just makes me happy. Kai has a place she feels right in, with friends and girls who age her accept her and want her around, she get's to be included in the "girls"!!! Like how sweet is this?

And the girl sleepover with all the team girls!!! It's so cute!

Her sinking into the ground powers are so cool. Like - nothing specifically "trans" about this, it just plays into what's already there, that Kai feels like she's either floating so high off the ground or totally stuck in it and how everything in her life feeds into that.

There's definitly more, like so many more, like maybe I'll add onto this post later kind of more, but I am so sleepy now, that I'm just going to post this for now!! Congrats to the writers at Pixar for pushing through even when Disney tried to shut them down. I know I really appreciate it.
