FFVIICC IS TRANS CODED

Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core is trans. And I don't know if anyone cares or will even see this post, but in it, I'm going to explain why.

FFVIICC is the prequel to the famous FFVII and the game where the story of Zack is told. In the original game Zack is a character only presented to us through small dialogues and optional cut scenes, so they had room to expand the universe however they wanted, thus presenting us two new characters, Genesis and Angeal. Our two trans characters.

Genesis and Angeal, as presented by the game, are two first class members of SOLDIER, who on top of the already standard mako infusion they were experimented on with JENOVA cells. Genesis after birth and Angeal even before his conception, being his mother the one who got the "treatment".

That is what happens to them in the game. But now let's see it from another angle. Angeal and Genesis were both childhood friends. One son of a humble family with no food to take to their mouths and the other heir to a great fortune. They used to spend all their time with each other, even after joining SOLDIER they were never not together. Or at least, that was the case until a third force came in, Sephiroth, the hero. We don't know much of their friendship, only that they fought. A lot. And that Genesis seemed to be jealous of Sephiroth, or at least that was the case when they spoke, since Genesis was usually more invested in reading, and reading and reading the book for the play Loveless it stands to reason to think social interactions were not top priority.

But why was Loveless so important? Loveless is a play that tells the story of a godess, her return, and how she brings the end of the world, or that's what's thought happens, given that the last chapter is lost to history. Genesis is obsessed with that story. In every single scene Genesis shows up, Loveless is quoted to show the ambition Genesis has to bring the godess to the world. To become the godess. Genesis Rhapsodos is a trans woman.

Thinking about her this way gives a whole new meaning for her story and actions. Her running away from home, her hate towards Sephiroth and the world and, mostly, her friendship with Angeal.

Going in order, is not hard to guess why she would hate her family. They didn't accept her, that's why she runs away to only end up killing them and burning the whole town down once she finally comes back. Which makes sense, given that her diary shows us she was a lonely child, she was likely also not accepted by the folks in her hometown.

After that, we have the hate and evny towards Sephiroth. I see it as something as easy as the resentment she felt at someone who was happy and didn't know anything about the pain it brings to not have parental love because they hate your kind. And yes, Sephiroth may have been an orphan, but Genesis clearly seemed to think that was a better option.

Finally, we have Angeal. As I said at the start I also belive him to be trans, but in a different light. Angeal is presented as an stoic, no nonsense character, contrasting with Genesis' explosive and theatrical persona, which for me represents a different way of dealing with the heart break that was his mother not fully accepting him.

At first the thought of his mother being transphobic seems unreasonable, after all, she loves her son, she seems worried about him when you speak to her. Well, yes, but the problem is both things can be true at once. The reject of his identity, while clearly a hate driven action, in the eyes of a parent can be confused with an act of love. The real problem begins when they refuse to change that view, such as she does.

When we meet her she doesn't answer to "Are you Angeal's mom?" but only to Zack introducing himself after she remembers her son wrote about him in a letter. Now she knows who he is asking for, who Angeal is, and her first question is "Are you with Genesis?", or, as we are seeing this plot, asking if he is also one of them queers. Zack says no, which in turn makes Gillian willing to speak with him about Genesis and her son, who I belive treats in masculine not out of acceptance in this scene but because she understands Zack might not know and doesn't wish to cause troubles to her only child. After this interaction, next time we see her is dead, after taking her own life and with her son staring at her corpse. This also marks the time Angeal's character goes down a spiral that makes him a "monster".

With both chracters' stories more or less covered, now I want to talk about their struggles and ultimately their demise. Both trans people not accepted by their families and town, they run away together to the big city. Once there they try their best to live their life, Angeal manages to, at least to some extent, while Genesis unable to transition becomes more and more consumed by the pain and hate she feels. Angeal is unable to let go of the mother he left alone after his father died, and tries to mend the relationship, but fails time and time again, taking a toll on him. Genesis, on the other hand, doesn't care about those who didn't care for her, killing everyone that dared to wrong her. Angeal suffers when her mother died, Genesis finds it just. Angeal cannot go any further with what he caused, he might be trans but wishes he wasn't, he sees himself as a monster, thus becoming one and asking Zack, his only friend left, to end him. Genesis, with each day that passes, which each second she feels is pushed further and further from her goal, she loses it more and more, beliving herself to be the godess who will bring forth the end of the world, and so she becomes a bastardized form of the godess, who also ends up defeated and left to rot, alone and broken. Both of them imitating the play loveless. Stories about revolution and change, cut too short, the last chapter lost to time, forever.

And that's my trans coded reading of the characters! I know it's depressing and also not at all what the story and plot is about, but it's also something I clearly see when playing the game, and art is suppoused to be a personal experience, so this is who I choose to see my own experiences through this silly guys:)

imagine dads sephiroth tucking in his and genesis’ kid(s) and when they ask for a bedtime story, they sit on either side of their kids bed as genesis recites loveless (like the actual story, not just the poem) to them, which has ended up being their kids favorite bedtime story, and they smile as their kid(s) fall right asleep, before they both give the child(ren) a little kiss on the forehead and quietly make their way out of the room. and when the kid(s) ever had a nightmare when they were younger and sephiroth and genesis would let the kid(s) sleep in their bed, and read to get them to fall asleep again, sometimes genesis reading loveless would also make sephiroth fall asleep too, and in those cases genesis would reach over and tuck in sephiroth the way they tuck in their kid(s) (forehead kiss included)

Fails utterly with matchmaker. Will not shut up about Loveless thinking it will improve his chances, accidentally burns house down (or maybe not by accident)

Reflection moment

Meanwhile Shinra pushing harder into wutai territory, calls for conscription come to Banora

Angeal is going, gen feels desperately left out

Begs to go instead of his father, yelled at and shamed in front of village

Constantly being told he’s a dishonor by everyone as a child has given him massive inferiority complex, doesn’t help that angeal is so into honor (not that he says that to gen tho)

Sneaks off in the middle of the night for war, def doesn’t tell angeal

Ancestors send zack the puppy after him, cloud the lucky chocobo is the horse and cricket combined?

Angeal sniffs him out pretty quick after he joins the camp, chews him out in lecture about honor

Gen very upset with him about that, uh oh they’re beefing

Angeal still doesn’t rat him out and keeps an eye out for him even if they’re not talking tho

Hojo comes to tell his “son” sephiroth that he’d better not disappoint him with the trust they’re putting in him to let him lead this group of soldiers after the last glencident (rhadore o7)

Rufus left in charge to supervise sephiroth (or maybe a turk? Just think the animosity between those two fits the shang and scribe dynamic)

Training montage. Gen has gender crisis realizing this is him actually, while also having crisis over his new massive crush on sephiroth

After training montage angeal apologizes and they are besties again until angeal laughs at him for his crush on seph and genesis is now in a huff

Zack and cloud overhear seph and rufus fighting about the quality of the troops

Gen tries to reassure seph as he storms away from rufus

Zack and cloud forge orders to the front to give to rufus

Girl worth fighting for is seph having a sexuality crisis over genesis, maybe also angeal

Seph’s thoughts: oh god is that somehting i was supposed to want??? Its never happened before,,,,, and now that maybe it is it’s not with a girl? Shit

Angeal can also have a crisis over oh shit gen I’ve loved you since forever and I thought I was gonna get to marry you but you’re not a girl ig so wtf do I do now

They come across a burned village in wutai that shinra’s armies have already swept through

Seph starts questioning his allegiance to shinra

Instead of finding hojo dead bc we’re not that lucky maybe he finds glen dead having joined the resistance against shinra. Maybe rufus shot him right before he could get to him

Ambush by angry vengeful wutaians, gen saves the day with strategic forest fire to give them a chance to escape without doing too much slaughtering but gets injured in the process

I would put avalanche here as a funny reference but idk how id fit them in

Transphobic rufus, seph is just even more confused in his identity crisis now and also has spent his entire life being conditioned against this sort of thing hes not really that upset

Angeal left behind with genesis bc he knew and didn’t turn him in

Rest of the army takes the fort they were supposed to take and goes back towards midgar

Gen is big sad, angeal gives rousing acceptance speech

Gen, inspired, decided that Genesis Rhapsodos does what Genesis Rhapsodos wants and goes after them to give them a piece of his mind and inform them that gender norms are bullshit and what stops him from being a man really they all seemed pretty convinced before

Gen and ange run to catch up to the army having a victory parade in junon

On the way back they run into a group of wutaian ninjas sneaking up on the city

Seph, who has just been chewed out by hojo and is having a bit of a panic attack internally, doesn’t listen to gen

Big showy ceremonial thing with sephiroth and pres shinra, wutaians show up to crash the party and kidnap shinra, seph still reeling from hojo and genesis and everything is off his game a little and isn’t able to stop them

Gen and angeal show up while seph is about to go after them, comes up with plan to crossdress to get inside

Perhaps seph has an oh shit gender moment of his own here

The others deal with the guards while seph goes on ahead after the president

He busts open the doors to the throne room where he finds shinra just chilling with the wutaians??? Turns out he hired paid actors (mercenaries) to attack the parade to fuel propaganda against wutai

Since wutai is known to use monsters to combat soldier he has no qualms about getting hojo to set a giant monster on ags bc they’ve seen too much

One cathartic hojo murder and climactic rooftop battle later and shinra’s evil plans get revealed to the public

Maybe kunsel leaks the receipts or something or shinra monologues evilly for a hidden camera held by zack or both

Shinra definitely at least gets deposed if not outright assassinated

Rufus tries to step up as emperor but the crowd is not having it. They are chanting for the great hero sephiroth instead

Sephiroth deflects the praise onto Genesis who actually wants it and preens under the attention, angeal is just proud of his besties

When gen and angeal return home gen finally gets to fulfill his dream of sharing an apple with sephiroth yayy

If anyone wants to do anything with this go right ahead, just lmk, I would 99999% read this fic but I do not have time to write it rn and I am not an artist

Thank you once again for letting me bully my way into getting Strifesodos into the zine.

The warm lighting implying a fire was so much fun to do. The glowing eyes, too! since birdblack was in the zine, I took inspiration from the way they draw all the SOLDIERs’ and Cloud’s eyes. And the subtle amount of scars was also fun. The degradation scar is obvious, but I wanted soft kissing of the ugly bits aakjsldhf, I really got to indulge myself on this one. And I absolutely love the idea that, despite the fact that they’re camping out in the open, Genesis is such a fussy baby that he insisted on some kind of mattress and he’s so vain that he needed the bright red blanket. What a trash fire, I love him.

And true love is letting someone make your arm go numb by them lying on it I will die on that hill.
