Throwback Fic Week: tell my father (this is my life)

Next up: tell my father (this is my life).

Is it cheating if I post the combined fic for an entire series? Maybe. But this is my account and I do what I want. 

Welcome to my Season 1, Episode 9 Umbrella Academy AU in which Ben convinced Klaus to fight to let Vanya out of the cell in the basement. The AU is entirely focused on exploring these kids’ trauma and their healing processes, while also casually exploring their queer indentities. Each fic/chapter was focused on a different character, exploring their backstories and also their lives living together, sorting through old hurts while learning how to heal together. Also, almost every character is queer, and it was fun to explore not just Vanya and Klaus being bisexual, but Diego’s transgender identity, Five and Alison’s asexual identity, and Luther’s aromanticism through the lens of their trauma and how that intersects with both their experiences growing up under Hargreeves and them trying to make an identity for themselves. I also took the first season’s establishment of Klaus’ powers and brought back Patch, Ben, and Dave because I could. Also, it somehow developed a tiny plot in which I sort of predicted that Season 2 would open up the possibility of an eighth sibling- though, in my case, it was an evil sibling who happens to be Jack the Ripper and who joined the Agency.

"Five's so small," Allison says quietly, "He's so old, but he's so small," and Diego nods. He understands. Dear god, he understands.

"He's our brother," Diego says, "And he's gone through as much shit as we have, and then some."

Allison nods. "And we weren't there for most of it."

Diego thinks about all the shit that they've all gone through that none of them supported each other through. Vanya being excluded and verbally abused, Klaus' drug addiction, Allison's divorce, Luther's years on the moon, Diego's time on the force and his transition process, Ben's death. Five's gone through a lot more shit, but they've all been alone and driven apart in their own ways. "I think most of us have gone through some shit that the others weren't there for. But now- now, we can help him heal."

Allison fixes him with a steady gaze, and Diego doesn't flinch.

She looks so old and yet so young at the same time. The scar on her neck is still rather dark and there are crows' feet around the edges of her eyes that weren't there the last time he saw her before Dad's funeral, six years ago at Ben's funeral. She's so mature, now, in a way she never was before. He wonders if it has to do with Claire or has to do with the fact that she's stopped using her powers, or if it's something of a mix of the two.

Diego wonders what she sees when she looks at him, if she sees the little boy straining to make the world see him for who he really was, bullying and scraping and pleading to get his way, or if she sees a half-broken man who's spent his whole adulthood clinging to the lies of superheroes he was told as a child.

"The three of us should really go grab dinner sometime soon," she eventually says, and Diego grins.

I see your point about June (and June is my favorite too). And I've definitely seen people headcanoning trans boy John out of really blatant spite, and complaining about June in a way that felt extremely pointed, like her mere existence is an insult and a source of hurt.

Buuuut on the other hand, many people loved transfem Roxy for a long time before the Epilogues, and I think it's fine and fair for them (... okay, us) to feel fleetingly disappointed that Roxy is transmasc in the Epilogues. I also think it's fine and fair to continue headcanoning Roxy as transfem, because the Epilogues were very explicitly in-text framed as one possible continuation out of many. I won't lie, I just love that t4t f/f Roxygen.

So my line of thinking is, it's probably still fine and fair to also love trans guy John, if people are inclined that way. It's more about the way that they do it? If you're finding yourself framing June as some kind of invasion on your holy safe space by the mean and terrible new writers of Homestuck, you need to take a step back and reexamine the transmisogynist bias there, and most importantly you need to stop being so goddamn rude to the people making art that just isn't for you. But on the other hand, I think simply ignoring the Epilogues and doing your own thing with trans boy John and his shaving cream trauma, that to me is perfectly in line with - and in fact respectful of - the spirit of the Epilogues.

(Similarly, I don't think it'd be bad to do a reading of the TUA comics where Vanya is a trans girl; I don't even think it'd be bad to write an AU genderswap of the TUA show universe where Viktor is a trans girl, though I'd greatly prefer if other characters' gender was changed too in that case.) (For example, I'd enjoy a full swap where A and V Hargreeves were the only "boys" growing up, and then V transitions and A is left all alone with his masculinity and he lets it steep into resentment. Also, sometimes you want trans girls with violins blowing up the world.)

Right, I hear what you’re saying but I think there’s a couple of key differences here

First of all, we know for a fact that Roxy being transmasc was prompted by a transmasc writer who was repeatedly & horribly transmisogynistic about transfem headcanons, so I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to assume that he really did specifically hate transfem Roxy headcanons out of spite so much that he made it an impossible reading in both timelines. But even then — I do think that if somebody specifically just decided Roxy is transfem and everything else from the Epilogues is the same (or magically headcanoned away as making sense somehow) then they would be intentionally misunderstanding & rejecting the text too. Like, that’s ok, that’s literally what a large part of fandom is, but the reasons for doing this are not neutral, and they reflect hegemonies & wider values.

In the case of transfem Roxy the point is to pointedly reject something we think is transmisogynistic — we have been teased with transfem Roxy for years, it’s an obvious & clear reading of her relationship to Callie in Act 6, and so I think it’s a legitimate criticism of the Epilogues. Meanwhile, there straight has not been years of hints for transmasc John, in fact, to headcanon June as transmasc you have to pointedly ignore her already extant queer narrative.

I also think you either misunderstand or are intentionally misunderstanding how alternate realities work in The Homestuck Epilogues & Homestuck Beyond Canon. They are not just one continuation out of many — there is only the two as far as I’m aware. I’m not up to date with HSBC but it’s my understanding that reality was cleft in two.

i agree with you on the Umbrella Academy! because this is something that has been like rebooted to switch things up, those characters are gonna get remixed. i’d love to see a transfem Vanya somewhere down the line. but if i only blogged about the tv show and i was constantly & loudly explaining how i prefer transfem Vanya and how she should be transfem in the show then I think that would obviously be in poor taste.

i think what bothers me is the boldness of so many men to be like “idk i just prefer this as a man character” right in the replies of posts where transfems are gushing about/sharing their transfem headcanons. I can’t even talk about June being trans without a few people saying that, and that’s actually confirmed as 100% happening, so it’s even more impossible to escape with like transfem Link headcanons etc.

i think all in all, transmascs, trans boys & trans men should try and leave more space for their sisters in the community. it is not subversive to wish every character was a man. just misogynistic. leave room for transfems, trans girls & trans women in fandom and beyond, folks.

A/N: Just wanted to say before anyone reads this that Klaus does use the t-slur in reference to Viktor because I thought it would be in character for him and he's a trans person, so it's not derogatory. If this makes you uncomfortable, maybe give the fic a miss! Stay sissy and bitchy everyone <3

“Vanya? Are you in here?”

Diego was getting frustrated. He had been looking for his favorite hoodie for the better part of four hours and had yet to get even an inkling of where it was. He knew that there were other options for clothes that he could wear, but his brain had decided that if he was going to brave the cold New York spring, then he was going to do it in the hoodie that Grace had given him for his birthday or not at all.

He had searched all over his room, in the laundry room, and in the renovated living space where they all spent their time but hadn’t found anything yet. Those were the only places that he would have left it on his own, he was certain of that. After they had returned back to their time from the sixties, their father was still dead but they had fixed both apocalypses. They had inherited the house and immediately moved back in together so that they could figure everything out. It was better for Luther and Five, so that they could have someone to teach them how to adjust to their lives without the Academy. It was good for Diego to have a support system as well, but he mostly just liked knocking down the old walls of their place so that they could turn it into something livable instead of an amalgamation of training rooms and empty storage spaces. Only about a fifth of the mansion was livable without one of them stumbling into a memory that they didn’t want to recall without a therapist present.

Which meant that unless it suddenly learned how to grow legs and walked away on its own, it had been stolen by one of his more mischievous siblings. Despite what the others thought, Vanya was the worst about stealing clothing that did not belong to her. She was the smallest out of them all by far, despite the fact that Five was still short even though he was occupying a thirty-year-old body like the rest of them were. She fit in all of their clothing even if anything that stretched across Luther’s shoulders dwarfed her tiny frame like it was trying to swallow her whole. Everyone assumed that Klaus would be the one to take their clothing, but now that he was putting on some weight due to his healthy diet and the absence of drugs, he only really fit in Allison’s clothing.

As soon as he had finished searching through the rooms that it could be in for the fourth time, he had begun to search for the actual sister in question. Grace hadn’t seen his sweatshirt or Vanya, so it was nice to see her again but not entirely helpful. The next step was to ask his siblings where their missing sister might be, but had gotten nothing once more.

So he was beginning to search for a human being instead of a sweater. Arguably, it should have been easier for him to find something that was at least ten times larger and also moving compared to how difficult it was to find his jacket, but he had come up empty in every room that he poked his head into. It was honestly beginning to worry him that his sister had disappeared earlier that morning and was no nowhere to be found.

The last place that he was checking was the bedrooms. He had already searched his top to bottom and had poked around the others when he was asking them if they had seen Vanya. That meant that the aforementioned woman’s bedroom was the only place that she could be, he was sure of it. He opened up the door and then looked in, only to find nothing.

His mouth tilted down into a frown as he stepped in properly. His brain was beginning to eat itself because he hadn’t been able to find the item that he needed to continue his routine. He knew that he had to work on his control issues, his therapist had said as much, but this was one thing that he couldn’t go without today. Too much had been let go of and changed the day before.

He figured that it would be easier to ask forgiveness from his sister for snooping through her things then it would be to wait until she returned from wherever she must have gone to. It wasn’t like they were all kids anymore and he was looking for a way to get her in trouble. She was an adult and she was allowed to leave whenever she wanted to, though they had all agreed that they would leave a sticky note on the fridge with their whereabouts for Five’s sanity alone.

Vanya had gotten a new room the first out of all of them when they moved back in because her room had been cannibalized by Klaus’ shortly after the Academy had begun to fall apart. The room that she had now was far roomier than the last one had been, with enough room for a comfortable chair and a desk that was fit for an adult. He also had his music stand and wo massive bookshelves full of everything that someone studying music would need to study. She had also decorated the space with her own little bits of flare, blue color and pictures of flowers that she had taken herself splattered throughout the room.

Diego closed the door behind him and then knelt down so that he could look under the bed for any sign of his missing clothing. He again didn’t find anything, but he did notice that there was a suspicious bag that he recognized all too well laying in the corner.

He reached out and then tugged it forward before he noticed that it was in an ornate brown box. He removed both items from under the bed and got a better, proper look at them both. The box was made of a cherry colored wood, put together so that the seams felt smooth against each other. The latch was shaped like a flower and turned towards the left so that the top half could lift off when it was to be opened. The top of the box had an ornate carving of a fox running through a forest, the depth of which was actually really impressive.

It only took him a second to flip the lid open so that he could see what was actually inside. There was a growing pit in the center of Diego’s stomach the longer that he saw with the knowledge of the edge of what he had seen. It only grew wide, like it was trying to swallow him, when he actually confirmed his suspicions. 

The inside of the lid had a classy black velvet lining that was wearing in the center and had collected an aggressive amount of dust in the corners and alone the seams. In the center of it lay a bag with the orange biohazard mark of a sharps disposal container, along with a set of needles that had not been used. There wasn’t anything else in there despite the nature of other such boxes that Diego had found in his life.

Despite that, the anger that burned through his system was enough to make his mind go into a hazy white confusion. He rose to his feet and stormed through the house in search of Klaus or any of his other siblings. When he found them, they were gathered in the dining room while playing a game of what looked to be solitaire. He slammed the box down onto the table loud enough that they all jumped and the cards went flying.

“Diego, what the Hell?” Luther snapped as he began to lean down so that he could pick up the mess. It was likely his knee hitting the underside of the too-small table that had caused the mess in the first place. They really needed to work on getting some furniture that was more suited to someone of his monstrous side.

“Yeah, Gogo, who spit in your porridge?” Klaus asked. He had dark eyeliner smeared around his lids and he was wearing a chipper yellow sundress that Allison had worn the week before.

“Do you now what this is, Klaus?” Diego questioned. He could feel the anger and heat of betrayal burning in his gut. It was threading through his veins and fueling who he was as a person. He wouldn’t be alive without that drive, that anger, and he was grateful for it.

Klaus fidgeted where he sat, obviously understanding that he was in trouble about something. He shifted so that he was kneeling on his chair, his hands threaded together as he used his elbows to lean low over the table. He turned his head to the left and then the right as he looked at the box before he finally answered, “No?”

“Diego, honestly, what is going on?” Allison asked. “Use your words like a big boy, not a child,” she accused when he opened his mouth to start yelling.”

He let out a huff, his nose flaring with anger. He realized then that she was right, for once. What he was doing wasn’t going to help anyone, it was reactionary and exactly the kind of thing that had driven Eudora away. She was giving him another chance the same way that his siblings were and he needed to show them that he was worth it. He took a deep breath and then let all of the anger melt out of him through is feet so that his mind returned to him. “I was looking through Vanya’s room because she’s always stealing my shit,” he began.

“As she does,” Klaus nodded as he collapsed back into his seat.

“She’s never taken anything of mine,” Allison glanced between the two of them. “I can barely even get her to let me paint her nails, let alone for us to share clothes.”

Klaus gave a half shrug that was more like he was rolling his shoulders and Ben flickered into the background, blue and half corporal. “Maybe the two of you just have really different styles, Allie.”

“Her style has been changing quite a bit lately,” Ben said in the moment that he had where his siblings had the ability to see and hear him. Klaus, despite having brought Ben to that plain with his powers, jumped at hearing his brother outside of his own head.

“I guess that’s true,” Allison murmured. “She’s been changing a lot recently, hasn’t she?”

“Well, can you really blame her? I think that we’ve all been changing quite a bit,” Luther reasoned. He had been going to therapy the same way that the rest of them were and he was discovering things about himself. They had a stack of jigsaw puzzles and more baked goods than any one person could reasonably eat in the kitchen to prove that. “She’s been doing more things out of the house and she actually brought someone home the other day.”

Despite yelling at Diego earlier for doing the exact thing, Klaus slammed his hands down onto the table as he got up into his kneeling position again, “She did what?” 

There was a pop and the entire room flooded with the smell of ozone. Five stepped out from the doorway and then walked over to the coffee pot next to the microwave in the kitchen part of the room that they were in. None of them ever sat in the formal dining room, even if they had to remind their mother about that every evening for dinner. It held too many bad memories of times that they had been forced to sit and listen to old men speaking about things they didn’t understand.

“You’re too loud for the morning,” Five told him, his tone bored but still somehow conveying just how upset he was.

“Five, it’s one in the afternoon,” Allison scoffed.

It spoke to his progress that the only thing that he did was glare at her as he sunk down into the open chair. Diego was glad that the entire family was there if he was going to have to bring up something potentially dangerous that their sister had done. It likely wasn’t a good idea of Vanya to be taking any kind of illicit substances when they didn’t know how they would react with the sedative that was still in her system or her powers.

Five drained the mug of coffee that he had been clutching in his hands and then cringed. “This tastes like shit. What are we talking about?” he asked.

“The coffee tastes like shit because I brewed it when I got up this morning and it’s one in the afternoon,” Luther deadpanned, echoing what Allison had just said. Five just rolled his eyes and waited for someone to answer his question.

“I found this in Vanya’s room,” he explained as he opened the lid to show them what was inside.

“Why were you in Vanya’s room?” Five asked as he leaned forward to see what was inside the box. Allison was the only one of the siblings that was bold enough to reach inside so that she could remove the biohazard bag from inside and look it over.

“I was in there because I wanted to see if she had stolen my sweatshirt, she’s been stealing a lot of clothing for the rest of us recently and my brain is telling m-me that I can’t go outside unless I’m wearing it,” he explained. He could feel his cheeks and ears heating up as he admitted that, but he reminded himself that his siblings weren’t going to bully him about his mental illness anymore.

Klaus took the biohazard bag from Allison and then waved his hand behind him haphazardly, likely to try and get rid of the annoying ghost that was yelling something at him. “These are definitely sharps, but if she’s doing anything weird at least she’s using something clean.”

It was hard for all of them to remember the time that Klaus was so out of his mind on whatever he could get his hands on that he was barely their brother. He had changed quite a lot and they were very grateful for it, but it scared them to think that he could relapse back into that person. Allison took the deck of cards from Luther and began to shuffle them so that she had something to do with her hands. “This would explain a couple of things.”

“What do you mean by that?” Five asked, accusatorily.

“Well, she cut all of her hair off. Do you remember a single time in our entire lives that Vanya had short hair? She always kept it long,” Allison answered with a small shrug. “Drug usage can really damage your hair, so maybe she cut it so that we wouldn’t be able to tell because there would be no hair to use.”

“I thought that she was just trying something new out,” Luther frowned.

The front door of the house opened and shut before they could continue. They all went silent and glanced back and forth at each other as Diego took the bag back from Klaus to put it in the box. He had just shut it and then locked the front when Vanya appeared in the doorway.

“Hey guys, what’s going on?” she asked, the smile slowly slipping off her face. It made Diego feel insanely more guilty that he was expecting it would, letting her get upset when she hadn’t even really done anything to warrant their scrutiny of her.

“Welcome home,” Allison smiled as she tried another small broach in the conversation.

Vanya stepped further into the kitchen after she dropped her bag down near the door. She scowled when she saw what Diego was holding and almost ripped it away from him. “Where did you get this? Why do you have it?”

“I think that we should be the ones asking the questions, Vanny,” Klaus replied. “Like why are you doing drugs in the house without telling me?” When no one joked or laughed, he flopped back into his chair with a dramatic roll of his eyes. 

The aforementioned violinist looked down at the box and then up at all of them before she let out a giggle. It devolved into a set of belly-aching laughter that had her clutching at her side as she gasped for breath. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, it’s really not all that funny.”

“Then why are you laughing?” Five asked, his anxious fingers drumming on the ceramic mug in his hand so hard that Diego was honestly worried about the poor thing shattering.

“It’s just, I kind of thought that you guys would notice. I mean, how did you get a single mission done when you’re this unobservant?” she asked, her mouth split into a wide smile.

“To be fair, I noticed,” Ben said as he flickered into life behind Klaus. The other man was scowling like he had just been bullied into something, which he usually was when he manifested their brother for longer than a couple of seconds.

“What are we missing here?” Allison asked, glancing between her brothers before she turned back to Vanya.

Vanya sent a sharp glare towards Ben and then took a deep brath before she began, “These are sharps, you’re right. But I don’t use them for non-prescription drugs. I’ve been taking Testosterone for almost half a year now. I’m really surprised that none of you picked up on the fact that I’ve lost all the fat in my face, my voice is way deeper, and I’ve been bringing home one night stands.”

“How is that… oh,” Luther dipped his head into his hands.

Diego glanced at his brother and then back to the violinist, “Why are you taking testosterone?”

“Diego, really?” Ben said, her voice low and sad. Diego felt a spike of pain before Klaus gasped at the other end of the table and distracted them all.

“You’re a tranny!” he shouted with an accusatory finger point. Everyone else at the table exploded with reasons about why he couldn’t say that and shouting at him for even uttering the word in the first place. “What? I can say that because I am too,” he defended as he held his tattooed palms up in a defensive position.

“Just because you’re non-binary doesn’t mean that you can say slurs at him-them?” Allison turned back towards the aforementioned violinist with a question on her brow.

“Ah, right. I guess I have to do introductions now,” the superhero groaned. “My name is Viktor Hargreeves, I use he/him pronouns and I don’t mind being called slurs by my sib.”

“Fuck yeah!” Klas cheered as he pumped his fists into the air.

Five got up to get another cup of the coffee he didn’t like. When he returned to the table, he muttered, “I can’t believe I didn’t notice.”

“Me neither. I got top surgery a month ago and was bedridden for several days,” he snickered. “I guess I thought that Mom would have mentioned something.”

Luther cupped his head in both of his hands, signaling the way that the rest of the siblings felt about the whole situation. None of them were upset about the fact that Viktor was trans, they were all overjoyed underneath the overwhelming rush of confusion. “We really have to start paying more attention,” Diego swore as he flopped down into his chair.

“Yeah, you do,” Viktor snickered. It was only when he walked out of the room that Diego realized that he was, in fact, wearing the sweatshirt that he had been looking for.

i last week finished watching the third season woo !! i used to be so obsessed with tua after watching season 1 that i even ended up getting all the volumes of the comics 😅 after watching season 3 i also reread all the comics back to back in like one sitting lol (spoilers for both the show and the comics coming up 🫣)

im gonna try my best to not make this sound super confusing when i talk about both season 3 of the show and volume 3 of the comics lol ------------------------------- the comic ---------------------------------so i went into season 3 having not previously read the 3rd volume of the comics meaning i had no idea what would happen, though i did know that the idea of hotel obsidian/oblivion was based off the comics BUT!! i found that the 3rd season of the show practically had nothing to do with the comics other than the title 😭 the plots of the show and comics across all seasons and volumes are both very different and season 3 was the most unlike its corresponding comic. one of the main differences being that the sparrow academy are only introduced at the end of volume 3 of the comics so i honestly dont know where the whole storyline for the 3rd season of the show came from i personally found the plot of the 3rd volume of the comic quite confusing and hard to follow as the perspectives and locations kept changing a lot so im actually rather glad that they chose not to portray the events of this comic in the show. that being said, i did like how each of umbrella siblings had their own storylines/adventures that they were on. probably my favourite storyline in the comics is vanya's ongoing recovery from volume one of the comics and also the pairing of five and allison which happens throughout the comics. i also like that luther and diego's rivalry is present across the comics. ------------------------------- the show --------------------------------- in the show, i find the characters to be much more likeable and more full of personality compared to the comics so season 3 did not disappoint in that respect. it was cool to see aspects of the comics continue to be translated into the show for example allison's reluctance to use her powers is a big thing in both medias AND IM SO GLAD THAT KLAUS FINALLY GOT TO USE THE FULL POTENTIAL OF HIS POWERS IN THE SHOW 😭😭😭 all the other character progression among the umbrella siblings is great as well!!! (we love senior citizen five) i liked the sparrows though some of them did not get much screen time and a few of their powers were a bit lame in my opinion 💀 (marcus and alphonso i am looking at you, sorry not sorry) i love love LOVE fei tho she is sooooo coool and christopher being just a random floating cube is so silly to me plus if you think about it, um some woman gave birth to that?!?!?!?! seeing sparrow ben just get subtly accepted by the umbrella siblings was so sweet like they were lowkey all just so happy to see ben again even if he's different. OH AND SPEAKING OF ACCEPTING!!!!! VIKTOR HARGREEVES 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 madddd props to the producers/writers of the show for giving elliot page a trans character and doing it in such a good way ❤️❤️❤️❤️ im so obsessed with all the different sibling reactions to viktor (also vanya in the comics has short hair sooooooo) ok so a few things i didnt like so much was first of all, luther and sloane romance felt really forced to me and a bittttt weird but ive seen people say that luther was in his himbo era during season 3 so honestly i'll let it slide. secondly there's lila who i disliked in season 2 but then she shows up with stan and i loved stan he was so silly!!!! BUT THEN lila is suddenly actually pregnant😭???? idk man, it gotta hella crazy. um thirdly (this is gonna be a really hot take but hear me out), i know its the whole point of the show and its a reoccurring thing that happens but all this end of the world/apocalypse business is kindaaa boring now 🧍 i guess it does happen differently in each season so its not completely repetitive everytime and i must say that this time was actually my favourite end of the world lol hopefully, the finally season will resolve everything nicely but only time will tell i suppose 👁️👁️. im actually gonna shut up now though because this is getting so long and while i could go on and on about tua im gonna have to stop 😭

Sidenote: I know that it's bad manners to deadname someone, but I looked up the name Vanya out of curiosity and came across quite an interesting pleasant surprise that I think is worth sharing.

Vanya

Origin: Slavic by way of Hebrew

Meaning: Graced by God

Character Connection: Vanya originated as a nickname for Ivan. In most Slavic languages it is either a strictly male name or a gender-neutral name. So, inadvertently, the show's creators originally gave Viktor a name that foreshadowed his coming out as trans.

to hijack a five-centric post & make it more relatively? generalish because i love fanon vs canon discourse (vv good points tho i agree)–

half of the problem is genuinely due to the gigantic breaks in between seasons? i wont argue about production management but can say that because it takes a while to get to where the characters are next, we remain stuck at where they currently are. fandom can only imagine where their arc goes, but ultimately we stick to how their personalities are defined at its current stage

and like, there's also a combination of slotting the characters into archetypes and tropes. everyone or most are guilty of it, especially with s1 (it was in the marketing). so fandom establishes perceptions of these characters, and keep them consistent throughout the show's run.

at initial watch, five is the stressed out wise one, and in hindsight everyone should have listened to him. we keep this in mind as we watch onwards to other seasons, and we always see him proven right about apocalypses nonetheless. but we forget or we dont realize it enough, that five is characterized as someone who was raised and Hired by the commission to look at the bigger picture, and when that's over with, he can focus on the interpersonal stuff; in comparison to his siblings, who in their pov never lived the older life he did and only Had the interpersonal stuff to consider.

again, we forget or dont realize it enough, so many end up perceiving it as: five has another apocalypse on his plate. of course the hargreeves are too dysfunctional to listen to him. i cant believe they didnt listen to him. i bet they never listen to him. rinse repeat

so, fandom perception. who didnt push takes post-s1 that were basically "luther's a moon obsessed uptight bastard, klaus is our lil sad gay junkie, allison is That bitch, etc."

but the show canon takes that and runs, pushing those images of them and stretching within boundaries. we went from family drama of s1 to family hijinks in s2; therefore we keep the pre established fanon perception in our minds

(for example, allow me to ramble – netflix marketing for tua once put out a post that basically said "this would be luther's playlist" and it was a bunch of songs with moon in the title. and its like, as an og luther defender, fuck off no hed have a bunch of 60s-80s songs with 90s guilty pleasure standalones. the moon was shit for him and as much as it was beautiful it was confusing and isolating and Thats why he was obsessed. shut up abt the moon i beg

and of couse the 'luther's stupid -> luther's a himbo -> luther's just plain dumb' pipeline :( )

but yes. show canon, and fanon perception of it. the further morphing into 'allison is a bitch, now', and, as said, 'five, the local cranky elderly'.

the third element to this are the comics, which might be where the weirder and colder takes of the characters come from. i only have a barebones memory of reading apocalypse suite (the first volume where s1 is based on) and already the differences are stark. its the royal tenenbaums with an edge – the hargreeves' genuinely dont see each other as siblings, so in that verse its written as ok enough for allison/luther and diego/vanya(as far as ik the comics version of viktor still isnt trans) to happen. adding to that, because they see each other as teammates more than sibs, the shit they say to each other and how they say it can sound more snappy and detached than half of diego's angry s1 dialogue 💀. reginald was hateful there, too, a stark contrast to how we see him executed with more depth and complexity in the show

so then, adding in ideas you can get from the comics, fandom further morphs the perception. then comes show canon last in the race to combine, and suddenly we scramble. its either 'hey, thats not how my idealized version of that character in fanfiction works in this adaptation' vs realizing that was never the case at all. five the grump no one listens to vs just five, struggling one more time, with his siblings beside him

oh no you guys. i’m going to spew things i’ve realized while rewatching umbrella academy. I’m realizing were all being too sucked into fanon things after being stuck without canon content for so long. We have convinced ourselves Five acts like a mean mean dude to everyone but rewatching, i’ve realized he’s only stressed and is saying things out of panicked anger, especially in s1 with the apocalypse dooming over them. he acts soft to his siblings multiple times, he’s really not as mean as we write him in fanfiction. he is a little crap though, that’s for sure, and i love him for that <3

also realizing that the siblings don’t hate five. they just literally don’t know him at all. he came back a completely different person after 17 years for the siblings, they don’t know five, he’s a stranger so of course they’re gonna be cold to him. it’s like, “i don’t know you well, but you’re always going to be my brother in the end”.

ALSO. for those who ship some of the siblings, uhm… i’ve seen a lot of you guys try to prove that they don’t see eachother as siblings and more like academy students, but they very much say in just about every episode that they see eachother as siblings. they don’t actually SAY that word by word but they say things like “she’s our sister”, or “our dad”. if they say OUR dad… bro. i’m not even going to continue, you can put it together yourself. But, i do realize why people ship the siblings. I am not defending incest shippers but with umbrella academy i can see why people have resorted to it. only 3 of the characters in the main sibling cast has romantic partners. people like shipping people, people love writing romantic relationships, but with only diego/lila, dave/klaus, and sissy/viktor, (i’m not going to count five/dolores for now) people are desperate with the need to ship the rest of the siblings with someone, and since there are only a few actual canon characters in the show that interact with our main 7, people start shipping them together… yikes. anywho, that’s all for that peice. i blame the show writers as well for shipping luther/allison, they did not have to do that, but i’m hoping it was only to convey the severity of what childhood trauma does to people.

ALSO THIS HERE SHOOK ME. I actually think Reginald cares for the siblings. i hate to say it, but it’s true. caring for them does not mean being good, though. he was a horrible father, and person, but he genuinely did care for the siblings, in a like, “being the best is the best thing for you, i will make you better, for your sake, even if you don’t know it now, you will see that i am right” kind of way.

also why has NOBODY MENTIONED THIS. in season 2 when diego first reunites with five in the asylum, while he’s walking into the visitors room, he’s staring at five with this heartfelt, soft look, and then says “five…” in the most soft spoken voice ever 😭 your honor i love them

ALSO UGHHH THIS. IM GOING TO FREAK OUT ABOUT CAMERAWORK AND METAPHORS HERE SO BARE WITH ME. we as a fandom complain about the lack of flashbacks five has due to his ptsd. we’ve seen his first flashback since getting back to his family in s1 during the van scene when he gets triggered by those kids playing and starts thinking about his own childhood, i’m guessing. i ate that scene up, and was sad to see that be one of the only deeply vulnerable scenes he has in the season, and during my first watch i thought they’d never bring it back up. but they do!! i may be stupid for not realizing but whatever. in season 2, when five is trying to explain at elliot’s with all his siblings around that another apocalypse is coming, everyone starts talking about each other. as someone who studies film and camerawork, i love this scene. we see the camera focus on five as it slowly zooms in. it doesn’t switch scenes at all as the siblings voices overlap and echo over eachother. this whole scene conveys him getting overwhelmed and he starts to zone out, starting to think of the nuclear war he saw his siblings in. the scenes of the war start quickly switching through, showing many different scenes of it before it switches back to five, who says “guys, you all die. i want to forget it but i can’t” which just UGH its so well done there. if you think about it, he was starting to slip into another flashback. he was triggered by talking about their deaths in the war but was handling it well until the siblings started fighting, where we see the overlapping voices happen. it portrays him losing control and being unable to pull it back together with too much going on for him to focus on grounding himself. we DO however, see that five was able to pull himself out before he fell too deep into the flashback. i love how they show this through them still having the scene showing the war, but then fives voice starts talking over the scene which is still focusing on the war as if he was pushing it back and forcing himself to come back to the present.

Well they're supportive tho- well-

Okay so first of, I kinda like to think that Diego was already out as trans when they were kids, so Diego is hella supportive and is like "trans bros!"

Luther comments that Five doesn't look like a boy and before anyone can explain it Five snaps that he used to. Diego then afterwards explains it properly to Luther because like- that's a misconception right there

Vanya is very supportive, but it also makes her reconsider her own identity, because she's slowly like "wait, but we both related on weird gender feelings as kids-"

Allison is also super supportive. Given that she's a celebrity she has worked with a lot of trans people and met trans fans and well also dealt with Diego so just overall very supportive, she probably also know more resources (and so does Diego)

Klaus hasn't come out to his siblings as nonbinary yet, but internally makes a note of telling Five and Diego (he was already planning on telling Diego)

Ben is obviously supportive too, he just sadly can't show it

Klaus and Diego ends up supporting Five a lot and Five supports them, later Vanya joins in when she realize that they might be trans too, tho they're still not sure what they identify as, but they prefer to use they/them pronouns and their siblings are very supportive of that
