why youuuu--!! ,,ԾㅂԾ,, this got so long for no reason

yuki is confused as all hell when he heaves open the reinforced door of his atelier—

("it's a hovel," pierre says.

"no," yuki says, "it's an atelier. a workshop!"

pierre looks around the cramped space and then drags the toe of his combat boot through the dirt, literal dirt, on the floor pointedly. "yuki," he says, the thin rim of his eyewear changing from a soft white to a sassy orange around his left eye, "it's a fucking shed.")

—to see a short, kinda lanky… guy. just some guy. with an unkempt beard and wild hair that is not contained at all by a very grimy headband.

they look human—only human, that is, from what yuki can see. and are entirely without armor. no mask or helmet of any kind. a dark green hoodie and cargo shorts adorn a slight, soft build rather than the kevlar kits and polyethylene plates that yuki sees on his high-end clients and the battle vests full of cheap screwback steel studs and spikes on everybody else.

he knows he's gaping but that's because he's wondering if this person is lost. they did knock using the assigned passcode, though…

"can i come in?" the person—yuki's appointment log says seb—asks, wincing. "it's loud out here."

yuki is so acclimated to the airships coming and going from the nearby docks that he doesn't notice them anymore. he also lives his life in noise-control earwear, though.

"yeah," he says quickly, remembering himself. he steps back and ushers seb inside. "sorry, come in, come in."

"no problem," seb says, moving past him. yuki's space is so small that there's not even a suggestion that there is anywhere to go besides the work table, so that's where seb gravitates as yuki shuts the door and does up all his locks: biometric, button electronic, and a good ole thumbturn deadbolt to boot. when he turns around, seb is pouring over his admittedly chaotic array of tools. yuki calls it organized mess.

"seb," they introduce themselves casually as they look, hands still tucked in the safety of their hoodie pouch. "i'm your two o'clock."

"yeah," yuki says again, "i was expecting you." well. expecting a client. not necessarily expecting this. "i'm yuki."

(pierre says yuki is foolish for giving his government name to clients. in return, yuki says pierre is overbearing.)

"yes," seb says, spinning to face him with a bright smile. "the best of the best, i've heard." before yuki can blush or deflect or even avert eye contact, seb is continuing: "shall we get started?"

yuki flourishes a hand toward the single stool adjacent to his work table. "let's."

seb sits primly on the stool and yuki slides into his usual chair, outfitted with every mod he could think of for ergonomic comfort. being an only human himself, he started noticing his body's aches and pains more and more as his book of business grew and his days got longer.

once seated, he removes a fresh set of black nitrile gloves from their sterile packaging where seb can see him and rolls them on. as he's fussing with getting them perfectly comfortable around each of his fingers, he asks, "may i ask your pronouns, seb?"

seb beams. "you may!" he says cheerily. "he/him, please. and you?"

yuki inclines his head. "same." gloves in place, he extracts a small, square sheet of sani from its case of fluid disinfectant for seb's skin before he realizes he doesn't know what he needs yet. clearing his throat, he makes a show of using the sani to wipe down the metal tray he'll use to keep selected tools for whatever they do—tweezers, pivots, files, pliers, lasers; you name it, yuki has it. "what can i do for you today?"

"ah," seb starts and only now withdraws a hand from his hoodie pouch. he moves to hold it under the bright, white light of yuki's attending shadowless lamp.

not only human, then.

"got a nasty jam," seb says, voice a wince as he tries to flex the robotic digits of his hand. the plates that hover protectively over the mechanical innards click against each other unhappily. "i get them now and then, but this time nothing i tried fixed it. and i really can't afford a new one."

yuki slides his loupe glasses down from their mount on his forehead and leans forward to take a close look. the extreme magnification helps him spot signs of stress but what he really needs is to get inside the hand.

"i'll have to open it up," he says, apologetic. he can turn off touch sensation so that seb won't be in pain, but it still won't be comfortable. he's already piling tools onto his tray; precision demagnetizer, calipers, one two three four five screwdrivers, a very tiny golden hammer… and both his utility cutter and his jeweler’s bench knife.

the bench knife is a friendly shape, yuki thinks, but the blade still gleams like a threat under the shadowless lamp. "let me turn off haptics first," yuki says as he holds up the demagnetizer, yanking it open wider so it's big enough for seb's hand to pass through, "that way, nothing hurts."

seb's smile doesn't waver. "nah," he says. "don't worry. i want to feel it."

where do you see seb and lewis' relationship going long-term in the daemon verse? what particularly inspired the choice of animals?

oooh this is a great question! I'm very fond of this verse, I'm hoping when work has eased off a bit I can get back to it, I want to spend a lot of time with it. Apologies now for the essay this became, there's a lot of rambling that you definitely didn't ask for.

In this verse I see them as nearly cosmically destined to be together. I think that's one of my favourite things about a lot of fic about them: the intimacy and genuine liking, the comfort in presence and the gentleness that's possible, even with the environment they're in.

I think events will roughly follow that of the real world, and I think because of that things proceed similarly - they skirt around each other for years, and Baku happens, and for some reason, against all expectations, this is the thing that finally breaches the last of the walls they had between them. But their job is literally to compete, to best each other, and as the season runs away from Seb, and Lewis basks in the victories he's earnt, after such a year as 2016, I can't help but think they'd both be too raw.

I think the fact that while Seb's been contending with his feelings and the strange cocktail of his run of glory at rb, with everyone saying he would be next to get the 7 after Michael - to beat him - to then years of bittersweet in the face of Lewis really doing it, he's had time to really think about it, consider his feelings and their implications. Lewis hasn't, Seb's been as much of a friend as he could be through all their shared series and seasons, but the depth of any feeling has been carefully hidden, and the natural separation that comes from being in the two teams pitted against each other, and having a really toxic breakdown in communication with someone who used to be your best friend, perfectly seals it. There's so much vulnerability that Baku brings about.

It takes some time though - it has to. From a quick check, 2018 is when I estimated they first truly admit their feelings to one another. I think Lewis has gone on a real voyage of discovery. I really want to write about that and do it justice.

All this is to say: long term is interesting. If you think about it, it's not just the two of them, it's the four of them. There are more personalities at play, even though Seb-Lucilla and Lewis-Tanja are two wholes. But I can't see them as being anything but together. And I think at that point, Monaco maybe starts to lose its appeal to Lewis, or maybe it begins before then. I envisage them bundled up during mountainous winters in Thurgau, pursuing their loves, and being enriched by each other's passions.

In terms of daemons, I know that Seb's came to me first, in fact I think it's what inspired me. And then I was trying to work out Lewis' and Charles'. I think in the end Lewis' was most difficult. I've seen a few takes of Lewis' being a bulldog, but for me personally, it didn't properly fit? I came upon foxes while thinking about drivers, the kind of mindsets they have, the personalities, opinions, and those of the people around them when they were young, and thus how this might have coloured their development too. I want to explore it more because I love the world building in this verse, it's really been fun!

While doing some early on I came to the realisation that there would be a preponderance for medium sized predators, especially land-based ones. This fit with the lynx idea already, and then after a few days of thinking the fox fell in. They both compete for the same prey, as it turns out, and can threaten each other in the wild. They're intelligent, especially the fox, which also forms strong family units. They have differences in adaptability though, as it turns out - hence why the red fox thrives, but the lynx has been very much threatened and nearly became extinct by 2000. I didn't actually know the latter two things while writing, and it's weird how they just kinda felt right beforehand?

There's also the catty nature Seb can have, and he's not meek either, definitely self-assured in a way that originates from within himself rather than external. Foxes have conflicting presentations throughout history and in different cultures, sometimes having negative connotations, other times spoken of as wise, faithful, and loyal. They run the full gamut of characterisation, which reminds me of a person embracing all aspects of themselves, including their past mistakes. If anyone does that, it's Lewis.

the CAF website is so difficult for me to figure out since stuff constantly errors out after showing up in the results of my search engine. barely any of these (now inaccessible?) posts are web archived, and searching the website does nothing for me. if anyone (@traincoded?) has advice on this please let me know i am an amateur

it is so crazy how some easily-findable information is just. not represented across wikipedia. for example, today i was dinking around adding some citations to the page on mirna mohsen -> won egypt ladies fa cup for the team -> team doesn't have a wiki page -> player named sandrine niyonkuru scored a brace in the final -> go to add that to niyonkuru's page, which is fairly barren -> learn about Burundi wnt CECAFA Championship and WAFCON results/add niyonkuru's performances to the page -> don't know where to find reliable info on her intl appearances and goals bc soccerway/gsa (i don't trust gsa but ppl on other pages keep citing it) r missing a ton based off my basic research -> go back to add citations to the egypt wnt page/end up cleaning up grammar and tone -> check the burundi wnt page, results are there but not summarized. AND SO ON! most of this information, at least results-wise, is centralized on the competition pages (cheers to this), it's just the grunt-work of disseminating to team pages and focusing on individuals i think...

my god. web archive your sources people. especially article sources. i am still getting in the habit of this/figuring out how to best use the internet archive but WOW it is so important...

i've only done edits on idk 30 pages. and already i am noticing sooo much stuff i never noticed on wikipedia before...missing citations especially. i like citations immensely.

twenny-seven is "the last goodbye" by odesza ft. bettye lavette. idc about odesza but omg what a good sample. i'm not an expert in 60s-era soul music (or 60s-era music at all really) but bettye's original 1965 vocals are treated to, imo, a pretty decent modernization here, and honestly no matter how it's remixed, you can't escape the clawing pain and desperation in her voice. whew.

Concept 1: Sebmick (I am a simple girl, with simple wants)

I've fleshed out some of this here and here, with the help of og Pacific Rim AU anon and @sebrrari! Essentially, Michael and Seb used to pilot together. Kaiju attack, and Michael's torn away from Seb. Seb meets Mick in the Jaeger program, and even though it's blindingly clear to anyone with an eye that they're both fucking drift compatible to the moon, Seb refuses to pilot with Mick. He wants to protect Mick; Michael would never forgive him. Mick only sees this as a betrayal. It comes to a head when Mick throws a punch at Seb in his frustration and anger and hurt, and sees fit to lop his own arm off in penance when the truth tumbles out of Seb in a fit of tears.

No, I never thought you were unworthy of me. It is I, who is unworthy of you. While Mick curses himself to the deepest pit of hell for ever laying a finger on Seb.

Why Sebmick pacific rim au tragic you ask? I don't know! I don't know!!!

Concept 2: Vettonso

Fleshed out here with the help of @traincoded!

The oldest pilots in the PPDC who only past their golden days become drift compatible. They hated each other at the start, and find comfort in each other now, battle-worn with their back thick with scars. Fernando annoys and teases Seb but would bite the hand off anyone who touches him. Seb comes to enjoy Fernando's particular brand of humour and chaos.

Concept 3: Sebastidan

I allude to it here!

The storyline goes like this, Ricciardo's family are huge investors of the Wall Project, and have steadily decreased funding to the Jaeger Program due to their initiatives. It is the lack of funding that causes Seb's partner (Mark!!!!!) to code in an old suit that wasn't prepared for the new Kaijus with leatherback armour.

I seem to carry a theme of, Seb's old partners are all gone, and he's sad and he trains the new recruits. But yeah, he can't pilot again after Mark. So he trains the new recruits.

And Daniel comes in??? What the fuck? The son of the investor who caused funding to be shifted to the Wall? What's he playing at? Seb will make it his life's mission to destroy Daniel and kick him out of the Program before he can cause more harm.

We find out Daniel never believed in the Wall Project, and denounced his family's name and came to the Jaeger Program in what he believed to be an act of penitence.

They're drift compatible, of course they are.

Concept 4: Martian (of cos of cos)
