Steam 2-8-2 SY #1676 in Baotou, China, 2008 by Ben Kletzer
The spectacular slag dump at Baotou steelworks as seen with SY #1676. At one time, Baotou had dozens of steam locomotives in daily service, but by this point in 2008 only seven SY 2-8-2's remained. Already most of these steam locomotives were idle every day, while a massive fleet of new diesels served the steelworks. The once bustling steam shop was already barren of equipment and awaiting demolition. But all of this could be forgotten while watching a SY struggle with 1200 tons of molten steel on the slag tip. Within a six months, the steel mill would be fully dieselized and SY 1676 would be nothing more than razor blades.

It's been exactly a year since I started this whole modeltrain project!!
Just a sketchy frame and a even more sketchy leg
Tumblr media
A year later:

I don't even know how many hours I poured into this project, but I documented alot of it on Instagram and YouTube.
The original plan of a 1.6m diorama, turned into 4.3m of modeltrain layout, with future plans to continue on the other side of the room. Let's see how much progress I can make in 2025

Old Lempäälä station, May 14th 2024, my photo.
The station building has stood here since 1876. It has been expanded later, but even the expansions are over a hundred years old. It's no longer in use as a station.

Any other trainblogs you'd recommend?
Definitely recommend @norfolk-bastard and @penn-central-official. There is a @mta-official and a @tfl-official but they are pretty inactive. I haven't interacted much with either @advanced-passenger-train or @greatwesternway but they seem cool. I am not actually that active on trainblr. More just do my own stuff.

SUPERBOWL
Let's thank the NFL for the annual excuse to party and celebrate the Southern Pacific's superb Owl passenger train which may not have gone to Las Vegas, but it did unite California from San Francisco to Los Angeles!
Tumblr media
The Owl was known on the numberboards as #57 and #58 having been upgraded after WWII from the "Owl Limited" which was listed as train #25 and #26 but all of SP's Owls were superb @espee-southernpacifc
Tumblr media Tumblr media
... the prewar superb Owl Limited often was rocking a cab-forward fullback fresh from spring training @aryburn-trains
Sometimes SP's Owl ran in 2 sections...
Anyway, I didn't really do any research or have anything to say -- just want to celebrate this superb Owl on the day of the annual sport event in February! -- scheduled post!

There are cheese trains and wine trains; we need goth trains. We can meet over spooky tea and watch spooky movies and goth bands and DJs can do little shows. Given the high propensity of neurodivergence in the goth community, it would be a massive hit.

HELLOOO TUMBLR!
Welcome to my railway blog!
I have decided to make a blog all about fully indulging in my special interest in railways! This blog was mainly inspired by @bovineblogger (highly recommend that blog btw!) but will sort of be a mixture of many kinds of blogs. I'll be sharing information about the rails and the rolling stock that operate on them, you can send me trains to rate or ask me questions about anything railway related, and I HIGHLY encourage you send me photos of and/or your experiences with railway related things if you come across them in your own life! Feel free to share facts to me too! I don't know everything, after all, and I wanna learn!
🚂Facts about me!🚂
I have been into railroads and their fellas since March of 2023!

in dereliction of my duty as the widely* accepted representative of urbanism in the great state of utah i have not posted anything about the proposed I-15 expansion.
learn more about that from the coalition organizing to fight it here:
From that page: “The proposed alternatives, and the direction this project seems to be heading, pose risk of harming neighborhoods already burdened by poor air quality, low investment from the city, and past traumas like redlining and the original construction of I-15. The alternatives do nothing to promote connectivity and health, and seem narrow minded when more alternatives such as investing in the public transportation system or burying the freeway exist, both of which will meet the need in a more impactful way.”
A note: I have had difficulty finding up-to-date information on this not behind a paywall, and I don’t know when the page I linked was last updated.
