Trails of Cold Steel (2 & 3) - Easter Egg and Trivia Rambles

I just reached the first chapter of Cold Steel 3 and took a look around in the new the student dorm, where a certain sculpture in Aurelia's room caught my eye.

It's a good example that I specifically love about the series (especially since Cold Steel) how it sprinkles all kind of trivial dialogues and Easter eggs that hints some subtle background story about the characters in this world.

At first glance, one would think that the principal's private dorm room is filled with ordinary pomp and splendor copy&paste decoration. However, as my memories of Cold steel 2 were still fresh, this striking lion statue looked immediately familiar.

It was Clara's semester project, which she worked on for the majority of the time in Cold Steel 2!

During the epilogue part in the evening, after Thors Military Academy has been liberated, you can find her in the art classroom, where she's completely chill and just has finished her semester project, where you can see it turned out to be a nice-looking lion statue.

The following day after the party, there is a sidequest (the one called "Junk Wanted") where you have to gather all kinds of unwanted junk for the store owner Brandon who intended to sell stuff on the flea market. Clara was one of the donors who gave her finished sculpture away, much to Gaius' and Rean's astonishment.

This means that, whether directly or through detours, Clara's lion sculpture eventually ended up in Aurelia possession at some point, which is why you can now see it in her room a year later.

As a fine lady, Aurelia surely appreciates true art and had a good eye for Clara's craftsmanship!

I wonder how much she paid for it? Did Brandon get a good deal out of it? And will Clara ever find out about this appreciation? Not like she would be the type who cares, lol.

I finished Cold Steel 2 just a couple of weeks ago and jumped right into Cold Steel 3, so I'm not sure if they will refer to it later.

In any case, such quests and those kind of easter eggs are one of many main reasons why I love this series so much, since they add a lot of depth to every single character. Even if the details seem minor at first glance and even if most of them are side characters who are not an essential part of the main plot, their scenes and dialogues strongly contributes to my personal gaming experience and feelings I have for this series and its vivid world.

Edit: Since the game already placed a few of those lions here and there, it's more evident that it's just one of the game assets that have been reused for decoration purposes. So much about the storytelling part, lol. BUT I still like that aha moment since I knew from which scene this asset originated from.

The faculty situation in Cold Steel 3 is actually so dire. There are five faculty members to cover all of their subjects, and one of those teachers has not attended formal schooling a single day in his life, one of those teachers graduated school a single month ago (and almost didn't due to poor attendance on account of being a mech pilot on call for his shitty dad), one is just a military officer, and the principal is Aurelia "my tits don't fit in this vent let's just bust the wall down" Le Guin, the most insane woman in Erabonia. The most qualified member is a 21 year old woman who is a logistics god. She also has no background in teaching.

context juna is a tomboy ( and I suppose this is the thing they changed because they thought it was sexist

what I say to this is " dont care should have kept it I wanted to see the same game that the japanese got but in english

so that the characters personalities would remain the same along with attitudes etc

The English line merely says that she has cooking skills, but the point of the original line, in particular the term 女子力 (literal: girl power) was to specifically hint at her girlish side.

The stackexchange thread points the meaning of the term out quite well:

"The underlying idea being that a girl with 女子力 will be able to indirectly attract males."

That's the nuance NISA omitted to remove sexism.

They removed any notion that cooking is a feminine trait, specifically one that's considered attractive for the opposite sex, Juna was lacking until now. Again, this was not about Juna being good at cooking but Juna having a feminine side to her.

Not only do NISA hide the original meaning but their line feels more clumsy and unprofessional in the process.

In fact saying:

"Juna, you are surprisingly more feminine than I thought."

would be a much more elegant solution. Linguistically the cooking was implied in the original. NISA however blatantly used the line to comment on her cooking (something we see happening, we don't need it mentioned).

Again, as I pointed out, 女子力 isn't JUST about being feminine but carries the connotation that she's desirable as a woman. NISA deliberately omitted these connotations.

Altina mentioning Juna's cooking skills in NISA's localization is merely contrasting her rather forceful personality and temperament. Cooking after all requires more delicate skillsets. And it's easy to come to this wrong conclusion in NISA's script. And evidently, you also did come to said wring conclusion.

So what would be the best way to translate it more accurately AND to convey both "feminity" and "desirability?"

Conveying the nuance of 女子力 I'd guess you could localize it like this:

"Juna, you are unexpectadly more feminine than I thought. You might get a boyfriend after all."

Don't forget, these are typical high school girls. Such subject matters are quite common to discuss among girls their age, so that line would make sense. Moreover that slightly emotionless second sentence that comes off as if she meant it sarcastically even though Altina didn't mean it that way is perfectly in line with Altina's personality.

But this would be considere sexist by NISA, so obviously they took the easy path and censored it.

the localizers may have had an issue with that but dont care should have kept it since it keeps juna's character and thoughts on musse

Context: [Party is in a red light district town] [Nun is Ash's acquaintance] Note: Ash is teasing her by making her church services sound like prostitution. In the localization she still respond with "why do you have to say it like that" despite Ash not saying it inappropriately like in the Japanese version.

Note: Jorōgumo is a spider youkai that takes the shape of a beautiful woman to deceive men and eat them. More Context: Ash calls Musse a Jorōgumo during the first class they have with class-7 (it was localized to Harpy) Second time is when they visited Mussee's home, which Ash called "Jorōgumo's nest" (it was translated as "Spider's nest") Opinion: And now we're back to Harpy, which I think does not accurately fit the context.

Note: "Joshi domo ni maketenja neeyo" is untranslated. Opinion: We can't have that line in current year

Trails of Cold Steel 3 posting time Do I understand why Falcom made the choice to have the main cast lose so many fights or have fights get interrupted so often, yes, sure. They want Rean going all out to be an end of series thing, they want to stress that these are still young adults struggling through events they're barely prepared for, etc etc. Do I still think it's insanely bad writing that 44 hours into Cold Steel 3 the party is STILL losing every single boss fight in the cutscene, Rean is still getting interrupted even in the most emotional or devastating fights and has someone save him from out of nowhere? Yeah lol. This fucking game, people have told me it's either a gag or it's important for Rean's character to never let himself go, and I get it but this happens every boss fight, every chapter, every story beat, the characters hold back, reinforcements come, it was all part of their plan, over and over and over again to the point that by the endgame the expectation has been built in you to just... not think the party will ever succeed. I'm going into the final field study, and just like before, I'm sure Rean and the others will fight, and they'll fail, even if it seems like narratively they should make it though, cause that's all this game has ever taught me will happen in Cold Steel.

I have no expectation that the party will do anything but lose fights for the next 20 hours of the game, cause that's all they've done for the rest of it, over and over and over. Anyway, I really wish I could enjoy this game but people constantly talked about how it's one of the best in the whole series and I'm just baffled at how Falcom continues to fall back onto this trope time and time again, rant over.
