This is Deep Rising 6 from 2001 - a post-college project inspired by the spectacular mandarin goby, a small coral reef fish. I wanted to echo the long, narrow format that I used for DR1, so this board was cut into this shape deliberately this time.
I made this with watercolor, primarily, and some colored pencil overlays. To my 20+-years-older eyes, it looks pretty rough, but the groundwork is in place now for where I'd be taking my art in years to come.
I lost track of some of the details as I was working through the coloring, so as an experiment, I went back over parts of it with black ink. In (many years later) retrospect, I should have chosen a color other than black! I've since learned how to re-capture linework in a way that is less jarring. That makes DR6 a good learning project for the beginnings of the "rescue" technique, even if it is not my best finished work.
I think this is another project that I'd like to revisit and revise with my current skill set. I love the colors and patterns, and now I know that I could do them justice.

Ekphrasis in The Danton Case, Thermidor, and their adaptations
Ekphrasis is invoking a piece of visual media into a literary piece. It can be done for a variety of reasons, from entirely pragmatic (mostly grounding the literature in reality - if the invoked piece is a real piece of art, one you could find in a museum, for example) or more poetic (drawing some symbolic meaning between the piece of art and the idea behind the text).
In Przybyszewska's plays ekphrasis is nonexistent, at least on the foreground. I don't recall any clearly established visual, given to the readers by the original author. It's not weird in any way - how many pieces of medai do you recall which refrain from its sophisticated and additional piece of subtext and iformation? Hundreds, probably. The only other artistic thing that she has weaved into her plays is La Marseillaise, which is invoked twice in The Danton Case. There are also three book references to Othello, Orlando furioso and this one book Robespierre summarizes to Saint-Just when he's talking about hatred (but of which I have no idea if it's a real one - it probably is - or not). Other than that - nothing, plus the books count only a little, forekpfrasis should be, as I said, visual in nature.
Of course, the historical aspect of her works is what grounds them in our reality, and so cleverly, too (seeing as they're not really historical plays in any way or form, but manage to fool most anybody). And thanks to her extensive stage directions, we have no need of any additional element helping us visualize the scenes, for she does it perfectly enough on her own.
However, seein as these are plays calls for a mirror ekpfrastic effect and thus theatrical and cinematographical adapations are born. And they, on the other hand, have a potential to be filled to the brim with visual refernces. Here I would like to have a look at a few, which are taken from one of the most well known staging and the famous Wajda movie (plus some). In no particular order, there goes:
This is the very first scene of a controversial theatre adaptation of The Danton Case. Instead on portraying Robespierre as a firm leader, who only in the very end collapsed temporarily under the huge responsibility he now had to bear, the director decided to portray him as someone physically weak, not in the sense Danton meant when he called him a weakling, but in the sense of somebody who already bears so much responsibility, pain, physical ailments, doubts and whatnot. Just: everything, everythin a human could possible deal with, he deals with, and has to do so in a way that doesn't make people suspiscious about his "shortcomings". There is a interesting parallel between him and Saint-Just, whose upright and unbreakeable character is symbolised by a neck braces, something which people wear after a spine endangering accidents - and incidentally, wasn't it Saint-Just who accused Robespierre of "breaking his spine"? But not in this adaptation, oh no - here their very last scene is cut extremely short and they recite the last few sentences along with some Thermidor lines as two floating heads, a vision into the future which awaits them.
Enough about Saint-Just, though, let's focus on Robespierre and Marat. I must admit I know next to nothing about him, only what some passage here and there in this or that historical study might tell me, but I know, as does everybody, that he was known as L'ami du Peuple, which is why of the reasons, I think, why the director took this image and transposed it onto Robespierre: to make him even more likeable, to show for the umpteenth time that it is Robespierre whom we should cheer on and whom we should feel sorry for. This might also be a parallel between their both's tarnished health, their premature deaths and - last but not least - the role of an icon of the Rvolution both of them play in nowadays' audience's minds. You don't have to study history to knowwho Robespierre was, you don't have to study art to know this painting. Even if you don't agree with some more in-depth explanation of linking this person to this painting, it is a good opening image. It captures our attention in a good way.
I had mention Saint-Just and there he is, in the background of the picture, symbolically assisting Danton and his clique in their last moments. Instead of shwoign them in torn shirts, the director went into another direction altogether and enshrouded them in white sheets from heads to toes, making them all look like very stereotypical ghosts, whom they will all become in just a couple of moments.
In Polish culture, the first thing that comes to mind when talking about ghosts is Dziady, an old slavic tradition that is now replaced with the Catholic All Souls Eve. Dziady is no longer, apart from perhaps some small minorities who still practice old pagan faiths, but as a ritual, they are immortalised in a play by Adam Mickiewicz, undoubtedly the greatest Polish poet ever. Everybody know this play, some scens - by heart, and they were and are being staged pretty much constantly from one point on. Needless to say, they inspire a lot of art, and I decided to show this very fmous poster by the most famous Polish poster designer, Franciszek Starowieyski…
…who is important in this case, because he played David in Wajda's movie.
Not many people know - because his other carreer overshadowed by a lot his first one - that Wajda was a painter. Who actually hated his art, some of his pieces are in the national museum of contemporary art in Łódź alongside stars such as Władysław Strzemiński (the hero of Wajda's very last movie), which is a fact he absolutely detested. I dont know, nor do I care, why was that, because what matters is his previous education as an artist at the very least helped him not only to envision the visuals of the movie, but also acquainted him with great works of art. On which he could model this or that setup. I think it's a nice little detail he catsed Starowieyski as David, a real painter acting as another real painter, it adds a layer of reality onto the movie, and presumably makes for a more natural acting in the few scenes he was in his studio (I also think they look alike).
Speaking of David's studio, I once stumbled upon a lecture which drew parallels between some scenes in the movie and some paitings, which was mostly focused on character and costume design, and truth be told didn't contribute much to the overall watching experience of Danton. However, I must admit the lecturer had a very good eye in this one particular case, in which he pointed out that this quick shot in David's studio pretty obviously invokes the Fussli's The Artist's Despair Before The Grandeur Of Ancient Ruins. I don't think it's a coincidence (or at the very least, would be funny if it were) this shot is shown during the scene where Robespierre starts to grasp at desperate measures to save the country/save his own face in the trial. It is an artist's despair, only artist of a different kind. And it is a despair when being faced with a (possible) ruin of something great, even if its greatness is not yet formed, as opposed to the greatness passed.
The very last example I was able to think of was this photo I found of The Danton Case from 1975. It is one of those old, very classical (I presume) adaptations, which are mostly filled to the brim with riddiculosly attractive people and very often deliberately drew from other sources of artistry, like the one pictured above. No matter what the real relationship between Louise Danton and her husband was, in the play it is portrayed as something atrocious, and I cringe whenever directors try to make it something else without good reasons for doing so, so I am very glad in the past at least they stuck with classicaly depicted acts of violation against women, not because it is a violation, but because in the classical stories (like the myth of Persephone shown in the sculpture above) the woman will usually get her revenge. Just like Przybyszewska's Louison did.
Thank you for bearing with me until the end, and if you have any other examples of this come to your mind, I compel you to share them with me!
List of pieces of art in the order of their appearance:
Jacques-Louis David, The Death of Marat
Franciszek Starowieyski, Dziady
Jacques-Louis David, Self-portrait
Heinrich Fussli, The Artist's Despair Before The Grandeur Of Ancient Ruins
Gianlorenzo Bernini, The Rape Of Persephone

Traditionally, royal families have viewed social media with scepticism and almost never engage with their subjects online.
Can anyone imagine the world's most famous monarch Queen Elizabeth sharing about her day on Facebook or Instagram?
Fast forward to the millennial royals today who are carving a new path for monarchies around the world to finally make their mark in the 21st century and ride the digital revolution.
Queen Elizabeth's grandsons, Prince William and Prince Harry, have kept the British Royal House's popularity high after the demise of their mother Princess Diana by using social media platforms to garner enormous publicity and audience reach. The Guardian reported that Buckingham Palace has even advertised for a digital communications officers to sustain their online presence.
The same phenomenom is now taking place among Asian monarchies today.
"After decades in retreat, Southeast Asia’s royal families are staging a dramatic comeback," South China Morning Post (SCMP) columnist Karim Raslan wrote in a recent article.
Highlighting how the Sultan of Brunei’s 50 years Golden Jubilee celebration was widely covered by both online and traditional media, SCMP reports that the popularity of the 10th son of the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Prince Abdul Mateen on social media might have contributed to the increased visibility of Brunei's royal house.
The upcoming royal funeral of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) of Thailand after a year of official mourning is also expected to get plenty of social medai coverage, largely due to his successor and son, King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun (Rama X) constantly making headlines which are widely shared on social media.
Closer to home, the Royal House of Johor leads the way in leveraging on social media to better reach their subjects and shape public opinion.
The Crown Prince of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim needs no introduction to all Malaysian netizens who fondly know him by the nickname TMJ, the avid polo-player who heads Malaysia’s Football Association, and who often talks more sense than most of his country’s politicians, SCMP reports.
His vocal stand on issues that affect the wellbeing of all Malaysians has made him a prominent social media influencer through the Facebook page of the Johor Southern Tigers football club which has two million likes and counting.
The crown prince's recent announcement about the birth of his second child, a son who is now an heir to the Johor throne in a posting on the JDT Facebook page conveyed the happy news directly to his followers online.
Putting a stamp of authority on TMJ's prominence on social media is the endorsement by his father, Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar who commands the attention of both traditional and online media whenever he expresses his views on current issues affecting the nation, most recently on the controversial issue of racial and religious segregation.
'When a launderette in his state sought to impose a Muslims-only policy for customers, the sultan demanded (and got) the policy revoked, affirming his vision of a Bangsa Johor – a Johor for all Johoreans. His actions were later reinforced by the pronouncement of his brother rulers mentioned earlier.
'Subsequently, a preacher reportedly on the payroll of the federal religious affairs department criticised the sultan’s decision, only to be severely rebuked by netizens backing the Johor royal family,' SCMP reports.
In fact, the Johor ruler went one step further and ordered for the state's religious body of which he presides to cut ties with the federal religious department linked to the disgraced preacher.
In a recent posting on Facebook, His Majesty who is a certified pilot flew his personal jet, a Boeing 737-800 back to Senai, Johor from Bangkok.
In many instances, constitutional monarchies which lack the direct powers of the executive as in Malaysia's case, have moved to consolidate their moral and social influence.
"The democratically elected elite has become primordial, narrow-minded and deeply resentful of progressive causes.
"Politicians and governments across the region should hence take heed of these royal lessons: engage directly with the people, build broad bases of support and act against injusticesrt," Karim concludes his article in SCMP.

Tóng Lè Private Dining offers a taste of autumn in Niigata.
If you’re a foodie but you’ve not experienced the wonderfully fresh produce from the Japanese prefecture of Niigata, well, that needs changing immediately. We first tasted specialty ingredients from Niigata last year at Lewin Terrace brought in by Niigata City in collaboration with OISHII Magazine, which Chef Kaisuke Matsumoto transformed into some of the most beautiful and tastiest modern French-Japanese dishes we’ve ever had the fortune to put lips to.
This year Chef Ken Ling from Tóng Lè Private Dining was invited to visit Niigata City, and chose various signature Niigata produce to be specially flown in for a six-course “Niigata City Set Menu” that’s available for just two weeks at the premium Chinese restaurant.
Situated on along Japan’s northwest sea coast, Niigata City is home to one of the richest varieties of seafood so it’s no surprise that Chef Ken has opted to use the prized delicacy that is the sazae (サザエ), or the horned turban shell, in his starter. While the shellfish is normally served just grilled, Chef Ken chops it up cooked sazae and tosses it in a ginger and coriander dressing, and served atop umi somen (kelp noodle) that’s been marinated with mirin, bonito and yuzu. It’s a refreshing starter, but eat it quickly before the ice bowl it’s served in melts into your food.
Then there’s his take on a tomato consommé, rendered from a combination of fresh and stewed tomatoes that’s spiked with Japanese ginger flower and lemongrass. It comes with delicately flavoured maitake and nameko mushrooms whose flavours are somewhat overwhelmed by the robustness of the soup, as well as slices of fresh lobster.
Another seafood dish is the medai, or blue nose sea bass. Here Chef Ken gives it a local twist in the style of sambal stingray, grilled with a hearty spice paste - made from dried shrimp, turmeric, garlic, shallots and lemongrass - and calamansi on the side to give a little citrus piquancy. We’re not sure if this treatment is the best way to showcase the delicate flavours of the fish, but that charred spice bits that fall off the fish are certainly addictive.
We particularly love the Kurobuta pork collar, a perfectly grilled piece of chop that’s altogether juicy and flavourful from the almost Vietnamese Thịt nướng-style treatment. The star of this dish though isn’t the pork - which incidentally comes from Kyushu - but the frittered Niigata fig that accompanies it. After spending some time in the fryer the flesh of the fig attains a creamy, jam-like consistency that pairs wonderfully with the grilled pork. The dipping sauces - grated radish, yuzu soy, and sea salted with grated yuzu - pays tribute to its Japanese roots.
Niigata is best known for its rice, and with good reason too. Its koshihikari rice is prized all across Japan, and here Chef Ken upturns tradition - the Japanese prefer to eat their top grade koshihikari simply with some pickles and a bowl of miso soup on the side - by moulding cooked Uonoma rice into a dumpling with yamaimo (Japanese mountain yam) and serving it ochazuke-style in a delicious broth that’s topped with crunchy popped rice and a piece of seared scallop. Judging by the oo-ing and aah-ing from some Japanese guests, we’re guessing they approve of this culinary sacrilege as we do.
Finally you can’t mention Niigata produce without touching on its Niitaka pears or Okesa persimmons. Chef Ken cleverly makes a tartlet topped with stewed persimmon and almond paste that you eat with a piece of the fresh fruit, and likewise serves a fresh slice of pear alongside one that’s been poached in red wine. Finally, there’s a custard of persimmon purée topped with pear jelly.
Chef Ken tells us that the ingredients have been kindly sponsored by Niigata City, which is why the price of the set menu isn’t as expensive as it should have been; for those of us who haven’t yet tasted the wonders of Niigata produce, this is one good way to do so.
Tóng Lè Private Dining’s special Niigata City Set Menu will be served from 27 October to the 11 November 2017, for lunch between 11.30am to 3pm and dinner from 6pm to 11pm (priced at $120++ per person). Reservations recommended.

Sivanmalai Kuravanji Dance Drama (Live Orchestra) The tradition of Kuravanji dance drama appears to be three hundred years old. It is usually performed by a group of female dancers attached to the temples (Devadasis) and the technique employed was the classical Bharatanatyam, known earlier as Dasi Attam / Sadir Attam. King Raja Raja Cholan, who was instrumental in building the Thanjavur Peria Koil employed circa 400 devadasis and it was their descendants who performed the Kuravanji dance-dramas. There is a special platform built at the Thanjavur Peria Koil called ‘Kuravanji Medai’ where the devadasis performed the Kuravanji dance drama. Most Kuravanji dramas has a set theme where the heroin falls in love with the Lord in procession and pines union with him. Seeing her plight, her sakhis (female friends) seek the advice of the gypsy women (kurathi) who predicts the future of the heroin’s union with her Lord. Sivanmalai Kuravanji Dance Drama is based on the presiding deity Lord Murugan of Subramanyaswamy Temple at Sivanmalai in Kangeyam, Tamil Nadu. The Kuravanji dance drama is performed in full Bharatanatyam format with some songs dance in folk style. The very first Sivanmalai Kuravanji Dance Drama was performed at Sivanmalai in the year 1994, choreographed by the famed Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee, Kalaimamani Guru B Herambanathan of Thanjavur. The Malaysian Chapter of Thanjavur Heritage Arts & Cultural Academy is proud to present the same dance drama, which is to be staged for the first time on Malaysian soil. #kuravanji #heritage #300yrsoldheritagedrama #devadasis #bharatanatyam #dasiattam #sadirattam #rajarajacholan #heritageofthegreatking #dancedrama #mohini&murugan #lovestory #lordmurugan #kurathi #gypsy #subramanyaswamy #sivanmalai #folkstyle #firsttimeinmalaysia #gypsydrama (at The Temple of Fine Arts Kuala Lumpur) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2cMl0jB8fM/?igshid=1rq0jbl5s912s

Innovative Kaiseki – Wakuriya Restaurant Review
Chef Katsuhiro Yamasaki at Wakuriya has been awarded 1 star by Michelin Guide many years running for its delicate and innovative kaiseki ryori.
Located in suburban San Mateo, California, Wakuriya has been awarded 1 Michelin star for its creative kaiseki ryori each year since 2011. Nami and I actually went to Wakuriya 2 years ago when our friends took us there to celebrate our birthdays. Yes, this post is really late and it’s because of my fault. I simply didn’t have time to work on restaurant reviews before. We look forward to sharing more restaurants we enjoyed with you in the future as I play catch up.
So what is kaiseki ryori (懐石料理). If you are not familiar with the term, it’s a multi-course Japanese meal that is usually composed of 1o or more dishes and they are served in a curated sequence from appetizer, raw dish, simmered dish, grilled dish, soup, rice, through dessert.
In Japan, it is very common if you stay in a ryokan, a Japanese-style inn, the dinner they serve as part of your stay is usually kaiseki ryori.
Kaiseki Ryori at Wakuriya
In Japan, when ryokans or restaurants serve kaiseki ryori they typically focus on serving fresh and seasonal ingredients from the region they are based in. It could be a type of fish that you can only get locally or a specific kind of beef or chicken. The menu changes based on what’s available and in season.
Tasting Menu at Wakuriya
Similar to other kaiseki ryori experiences, Wakuriya doesn’t have a permanent menu. Its 9-course tasting menu is based on the availability of the seafood, vegetable, and meat. If you are curious what Wakuriya (和厨) means, it means Japanese Kitchen or Harmonious Kitchen.
Since the menu is pre-fixed, the only choices diners have are drinks and we started the meal with some chilled sake. Our sake was served in a interesting glassware with an uneven shape.
Apple infused sake
Unlike traditional kaiseki ryori which utilize regional ingredients, chef Yamasaki shows off his creative cuisine and kaiseki training by using a wider variety of ingredients he sources from all over.
Ocean trout confit with ikura
Assorted appetizers
Beef with mushroom sauce
Black caviar with blue shrimp
As you can see from the photos, dinnerware plays a key role with kaiseki ryori’s presentation as it enhances the food, it’s important to not only tastes good but needs to look good as well. Wakuriya’s presentation does stray away from the traditional Japanese kaiseki style and leans towards modern fusion.
Foie gras chawanmushi
Japanese medai with ponzu sauce
Lobster tempura in matsutake soup
Persimmon ginger sorbet
Duck with saikyo miso
Seared maguro (tuna)
Sesame cookie with black sugar jelly and sweet potato mousse
Post meal tea
Wakuriya Review
So how was the meal at Wakuriya? It was really good and if Japan’s too far to travel and you want the kaiseki ryori experience, definitely add it to your list.
We also admire Chef Yamasaki’s courage deviating from traditional “sushi” restaurant and establish success through authentic and delicious Japanese food. Not only was each dish meticulously prepared, but the order of each dish being served was also taken into consideration. The contrast in flavor and texture allowed the diners to really taste each individual ingredient based on the chef’s expression.
Reservation at Wakuriya
We lucked out for our visit and didn’t have to make the reservation ourselves. It is notoriously known for the difficulty to make a reservation as they don’t offer it through email or online booking. You need to call exactly at 12 am (midnight) San Francisco time 1 month prior to when you want to eat there and leave a voicemail. And if lady luck is on your side and you happen to be one of the earliest callers, you might just manage to snag a reservation.
Wakuriya Restaurant Summary
Good for: small gathering of 2-4 people, the restaurant is very small. Max party size is 6.
Price: reasonable for bay area fine dining
Noise level: quiet
Food: memorable and much closer than Japan to enjoy kaiseki ryori
Recommend to try: Yes
Thank you for reading Wakuriya’s Restaurant review. If you are interested in other restaurant reviews or have a restaurant recommendation for us to try, please leave a comment below.

OT’s the friend we ALL need!
Primary Health care has been established as a sector that addresses a large majority of personal health needs. This sector is the largest in health science that deals with the immediate health needs that people may present with. This sector presents with people who have acute injuries, conditions and diagnosis are seen in this sector. The Multiple Disciplinary Team(MDT) is a team of people who work together to achieve optimal performance in a patient. The cohesion and effective collaboration amongst the members of this team is greatly impacts the recovery of patients.Occupational Therapy in my own opinion is a “Jack of All Trades” and is a vital member in this team.OT’s add life to the days that a patient may be spending in hospital recovering(acute phase).
A patient that is at an acute phase of recovery faces many challenges such as losing functioning of certain client factors. This dysfunction is easily reversed through the effective remedial therapy that come through OT. This therapy is special in the sense that it allows for remedial recovery through engaging the client in daily occupations that have been adapted with the aim of the client being able to experience remedial recovery. This role is very important because by the time discharge day comes and the client returns to their homes and previous context they would experience difficulties because they have not been taught how to still do things but in an adapted way that allows for them to participate despite their disabilities/conditions. In the primary health care patients family members are made known about the damage of the injury/condition of their loved on and how to live life with them and how they can make their lives easier.
Care giver training is something that is unique to the OT professional because family members get involved and are educated about the now limitations or difference in function of their loved ones.In these sessions family members are informed about the Do’s & Dont’s when it comes to caring for their loved ones. They are empowered with information about how they can continue with recovery recommendations at home to ensure the maximum treatment outcome of their loved one so that they can return to normal state of function prior to injury if possible.
Media is used to convey a message to a large audience if people to ensure that the same messages reaches a multitude of people.Media has developed along the years and has seemingly taken over how the world shares information and communicates. Media has been greatly used in the health care system to share information about diagnosis, conditions and injuries as a method of informing people about different medical conditions. These media forms have been used to get a message that is health related across to a large amount of people for example a community. The are many media forms that work well for different groups of people.
A medais form that is greatly used in the health system is the brochure. This media form comes in a compact folded paper that has information on either side about a certain condition, how to identify it,tios and warning signs and where people can seek help. This media form educates people about certain conditions in a very short and concise way.The reader leaves having learnt something practical that they can do or share the information with other relevant people.Brochures usually have pictures and a catchy title that draws the reader in and they are inspired by the pictures that are found on that brochure. What helps the most is for the information to be used and carried over by providing contact details that the public can use if they know of someone who might have the condition of they themselves have it.This media form works well in communities because the members have something tangible that they can take home and pass on to the relevant people and makes health promotion sustainable and continuous because of the possible amount of people that will read that brochure
Another media form that is beneficial to the community particularly in the community that I am placed in (Inanda) at the clinic there are long lines and a method that is used to give health promotional talks is the use of a speaker where a pre-recorded clip plays informing community members about the role of OT’s what we can assists with and how they can get a screening/session with us.This media form helps to inform the community members of conditions and how OT’s play a role in the recovery phase of that condition or even just general information about that condition. The speaker will be placed outside and on loud so that all that are in the line can hear what is being said.
Another media form that is largely used not only in the community of in the hospitals but everywhere,it is the most traditional media form used.It is a poster. A poster can vary depending on the information that is wanted to be conveyed. In a heath setting these posters will feature information either about the hospital, certain protocols, conditions, educational posters on roles of health professionals and even how a clinic or hospital works. The information shared on posters is concise and straight to the point which is very helpful for when wanting to do health promotion so that the information stays in the observers mind.Posters can be placed almost everywhere as long as there is a large flow of people passing that specific area for maximum exposure to people. These posters are largely used for prevention information about a condition that is greatly avoidable through preventative measures these diseases include HIV/AIDS,STI/STD,COVID-19 etc. These are largely seen in clinics in communities that have a large percentage of people living with these or other conditions/diseases
Ways that OT can fulfil their role in primary health care can be aided by media to inform people about their role and conditions/diagnosis.They assist in presenting information in an attractive, eye catching and concise way.

via Today Bharat When Indira Gandhi announced the Emergency in 1975, among the few Chief Ministers of the country who opposed her was Tamil Nadursquo;s Muthuvel Karunanidhi. His supporters say that despite having political control of the state, he took a stand against the draconian act and the despotic Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA), and stood by democracy. It cost him dearly ndash; his government was dissolved soon, and his confidantes and family members faced the wrath of Indira's government. He would not return to power for nearly 13 years. But those years defined him as the brave, shrewd and perseverant person he was, until the very end of his life. On August 7, the master politician and Dravidian luminary who held five terms as the CM of the state, passed away in Chennai, not before a long and hard battle against his own body. The ailing leaderrsquo;s mortal remains are at Kauvery Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment since July 28. The veteran politician had been keeping unwell and was out of active politics for nearly two years. His public appearances had also become limited. In December 2016 alone, he was hospitalised twice, and since then had been in and out of the hospital. Following the deterioration in his health, his son MK Stalin wasnbsp;namednbsp;the Working President of the party on January 4, 2017 at a meeting of the DMKrsquo;s general council in Chennai. Ill-health prevented Karunanidhi from attending the event, the first time ever he missed it due to his health. Karunanidhi, however, continued to hold the post of President till his death.nbsp; nbsp; From Thanjavur to Fort St. George Karunanidhi wasnbsp;bornnbsp;on June 3, 1924 at Thirukkuvalai in erstwhile Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, around 300 km from state capital Chennai. He was born into anbsp;poornbsp;Isai Vellalar family ndash; members of a temple-dependent caste that traditionally played the Nadaswaram. While his fathernbsp;wantednbsp;him to propagate the familyrsquo;s musical tradition, Karunanidhi was not inclined. But it was the music classes that gave Karunanidhi his first lessons in politics, as it reflected the caste intricacies of that era. He was not allowed to cover his upper body and his learning was restricted to a few songs. At the age of 14, Karunanidhi was inspired by a speech made by Alagiriswamy of the Justice Party in 1932, which prompted him to enter politics. He became a student activist in Periyarrsquo;s Self-Respect Movement, whichnbsp;foughtnbsp;for the rights of the Dravidians against the domination of the lsquo;Aryanrsquo; north Indians. The 1937 anti-Hindi agitations catapulted him into the thick of Dravidian movement, and elevated his profile in the state. After Hindi was made compulsory in schools, Periyar brought to the forefront inspiring young Tamil students to take to the streets in protest. Among the students leading the protest was Karunanidhi, who gave speeches and even brought out a magazine. His political activism found favour with Periyar and his lieutenant CN Annadurai, who gave him political space. Both of them were also impressed with his excellent oratorical skills and gave him the opportunity to address public gatherings. He was later made the editor of the Dravidar Kazhagam party magazine, Kudiyarasu. He led campaigns fighting for the rights of Dravidians and this brought him into political prominence in Tamil Nadu in the 1950s and 1960s. After Independence, after Periyarrsquo;s movement split in two, Karunanidhi joined the faction led by Annadurai, who went on to form the DMK in 1949. While Karunanidhi was good at mobilising crowds, he also managed to raise funds for the party. He was first elected to the Tamil Nadu Assembly from the Kulithalai seat of Tiruchirapalli district in 1957. He was among 15 DMK legislators elected. Thereafter in 1961, he was appointed the DMK Treasurer, and a year later, he became the Deputy Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly. He got a cabinet berth in 1967 when he was made the Minister for Public Works and Highways, after the DMK formed the government. Following the death of CN Annadurai in 1969, he became the CM of Tamil Nadu with the help of MG Ramachandran, known popularly as MGR. In 1971, he led the party to a resounding victory in the snap elections held that year. The very next year, after a cabinet post was denied to him, MGR split from DMK and formed his own party, the AIADMK. Political rivalry in later years Karunanidhirsquo;s government was dismissed in 1976 by then PM Indira Gandhi, who imposed Presidentrsquo;s rule in the state, following a declaration of Emergency in the country. In the 1977 elections, the AIADMK led by MGR trounced the DMK and stayed in power for as long as he was alive. Only after MGRrsquo;s death in 1989, did the DMK stage a comeback and Karunanidhi became CM for a third time after a gap of 13 years. However, an unsavoury event on March 25, 1989 turned the tide against Karunanidhi. On that day, Jayalalithaa, the Leader of the Opposition and the first woman in the state to occupy that post, was assaulted in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. The DMK minister for Public Works, Duraimurugan was at the centre of the controversy, as he allegedly tugged at her saree, which tore in the process. This incident altered the political dynamics of the state. In early 1991, the Centre dismissed the DMK government and Karunanidhi suffered a humbling defeat in the elections held in June. The government in Tamil Nadu alternated between the two Dravidian parties every five years, until the last Assembly election in 2016 which Jayalalithaa managed to win, for a second successive term in office. An important reason for the loss of DMK in 2011 Assembly polls was the corruption allegations against his party and family, most notably the 2G spectrum scam in 2008. The CBI arrested several people in connection with the scam, including DMK member and former telecom minister A Raja and Karunanidhirsquo;s daughter Kanimozhi. Both were subsequently acquitted. Karunanidhi perceived the 2G investigations against DMK members as part of a grand plan by the Congress to dump the party. Vinod Jose for Caravannbsp;reportedthat Karunanidhi had in fact confided to his closest associates that Sonia Gandhi was planning to betray the party, just like her mother-in-law had done several decades back. After Indira won a landslide victory in the general elections of 1971, Karunanidhi felt that she abandoned the DMK and associated with MGR who had left the DMK, in order to gain a stronger foothold for the Congress in Tamil Nadu. Life beyond politics Outside his political life, he was a prolific scriptwriter in the Tamil film industry. He was popular for writing historical stories which furthered the rationalist ideals of the Dravidian movement. He started his writing career with the film Rajakumari in 1947 and this was also the first time that MGR and him were seen together onscreen. Many early MGR films like Abimanyu, Manthiri Kumari, Marutha Naattu Ilavarasi, Naam and Pudhumai Pithan had script and dialogues written by Karunanidhi. Some of his early plays included Manimagudam, Ore Ratham, Thooku Medai, Vellikizhamai, Udhayasooriyan and Silappathikaram. In 2009, a Tamil film, Pen Singham, which had script written by Karunanidhi based on his old novel, was released. In 2010, he wrote his 75th script titled Ilaingan, based on which a film was released later. On the personal front, he married twice and had six children. From his first wife Padmavati, he had a son Muthu. His second wife was Dayaluammal from whom he had sons MK Alagiri, MK Stalin, Thamizharasu and a daughter Selvi. He also had a daughter, Kanimozhi, from his partner Rajathiammal.
