Tamil Nadu govt bans kuravan-kurathi aattam
The GO from the tourism, culture and religious endowments department dated March 10 said the order was issued based on the verdict of the Madras High Court on January 11.
CHENNAI: The state government has banned the performance of kuravan-kurathi aattam in any cultural or aadal paadal programme under the guise of karakattam since it denigrates the Kuravar community.
The GO from the tourism, culture and religious endowments department dated March 10 said the order was issued based on the verdict of the Madras High Court on January 11. The joint action committee of the Tamil Nadu Kuravan, Malaikuravan and Kuravar Sangankal had also made a request to the government to ban kuravan kurathi aattam.
The HC had directed the state government to ensure that no dance performance is identified using a caste/tribal community’s name so as to insult or degrade people belonging to such community. The court had also directed the government not to grant permission for the cultural or Aadal-Paadal programme depicting obscene and denigrating the social status of the Kuravar community, and if any complaint is made, action is taken against the violators forthwith. The GO said kuravan-kurathi aattam has also been removed from the 100 folk arts listed by the welfare board for folk artistes.
What the court observed Initially, the dance performances were related to social problems and politics, however, this has undergone a change in recent times. The performances began incorporating obscene dances, to keep the audience captivated throughout the night of the festival

Sivanmalai Kuravanji Dance Drama (Live Orchestra) The tradition of Kuravanji dance drama appears to be three hundred years old. It is usually performed by a group of female dancers attached to the temples (Devadasis) and the technique employed was the classical Bharatanatyam, known earlier as Dasi Attam / Sadir Attam. King Raja Raja Cholan, who was instrumental in building the Thanjavur Peria Koil employed circa 400 devadasis and it was their descendants who performed the Kuravanji dance-dramas. There is a special platform built at the Thanjavur Peria Koil called ‘Kuravanji Medai’ where the devadasis performed the Kuravanji dance drama. Most Kuravanji dramas has a set theme where the heroin falls in love with the Lord in procession and pines union with him. Seeing her plight, her sakhis (female friends) seek the advice of the gypsy women (kurathi) who predicts the future of the heroin’s union with her Lord. Sivanmalai Kuravanji Dance Drama is based on the presiding deity Lord Murugan of Subramanyaswamy Temple at Sivanmalai in Kangeyam, Tamil Nadu. The Kuravanji dance drama is performed in full Bharatanatyam format with some songs dance in folk style. The very first Sivanmalai Kuravanji Dance Drama was performed at Sivanmalai in the year 1994, choreographed by the famed Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee, Kalaimamani Guru B Herambanathan of Thanjavur. The Malaysian Chapter of Thanjavur Heritage Arts & Cultural Academy is proud to present the same dance drama, which is to be staged for the first time on Malaysian soil. #kuravanji #heritage #300yrsoldheritagedrama #devadasis #bharatanatyam #dasiattam #sadirattam #rajarajacholan #heritageofthegreatking #dancedrama #mohini&murugan #lovestory #lordmurugan #kurathi #gypsy #subramanyaswamy #sivanmalai #folkstyle #firsttimeinmalaysia #gypsydrama (at The Temple of Fine Arts Kuala Lumpur) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2cMl0jB8fM/?igshid=1rq0jbl5s912s

It is necessary to take measures to create water bodies and save water that is already available. While saving water, hydroelectric power plants also generate electricity. Places which are far away from water bodies depend on such dams and reservoirs for their irrigation and everyday water needs. Dams are a great asset to the country as it helps develop agriculture, holds flood water, prevent electricity shortage and tend to drought-ridden areas. Here is a list of the top 10 hydroelectric plants, stations/dams in India. Hydro Power Plant in India 1. The six 150MW turbine on the left side of the bank and seven 110MW Francis type turbines on the right side of the river bank generate a huge electricity output. The dam is prone to flooding during which times electricity cannot be generated as the water flow is downwards and visitors are not allowed. It is one of the top hydropower plants in India. Height: 476 feetLength: 1680 feetAbove sea level: 300mNo. of gates: 12Total area: 616 sq.kmReservoir capacity: 800sq.kmPower generation capacity: 6x150MW and 7x110MW 2. Nagarjuna Sagar Dam Nagarjuna Sagar dam’s construction began in the year 1955 and took 12 years (1967) for completion. It is built across River Krishna in Nalgonda district, Telangana and Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh in India. During flooding, excess water is sent to the canal which is then released to nearby streams. Height: 490 feetLength: 1.6kmNo. of floodgates: 26Reservoir capacity: 405 TMCPower generation capacity: 1x110MW and 7x100.80MW 3. Idukki Dam Idukki dam was opened in the year 1973, and its construction began in the year 1969 in India. It is constructed across the Periyar River between Kuravan and Kurathi hills in Kerala. Dance guru V.S. Ramamoorthy no more
New Post has been published on https://jordarnews.in/dance-guru-v-s-ramamoorthy-no-more/
Dance guru V.S. Ramamoorthy no more
The centenarian’s birthday celebrations were held last year with fanfare by the dance fraternity
Veteran Bharatanatyam dancer, guru and founder of Hyderabad-based Sri Rama Nataka Niketan, V.S. Ramamoorthy passed away at the age of 100 in Hyderabad on Friday.
Born on September 20, 1920, in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, Ramamoorthy moved to Secunderabad in 1969 and made the twin cities his home.
After completing his diploma in electro-technical engineering, Ramamoorthy moved to the erstwhile Calcutta and then to Bangalore to join Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, as a sub-divisional officer. In 1942, he joined Military Engineering Services (MES) and was posted in Madras.
It was Bharatanatyam though that he was most inclined to and became the first male student of the then eminent guru Dandayudhapani Pillai. He gave his Arangetram at Rasika Ranjani Sabha in Madras on Independence Day, at the age of 27.
Ramamoorthy was drawn to dance initially by the tradition of ‘Kathakalakshepam’ and narratives from the Ramayana and Bhagavatam. His portrayal of Sivakami, Kundavi in Parthiban Kanavu, Anarkali, Sita, Kaikeyi, Kousalya, Thilakavathy and many historical female characters in dramas enhanced his acting prowess. Going beyond Bharatanatyam, Ramamoorthy trained himself in Kurathi dance — a folk tradition of Tamil Nadu.
What started as Sri Devi Nritya Niketan to teach dance to children in Mylapore area in Madras, continued as Sri Rama Nataka Niketan in Hyderabad when Ramamoorthy had to move on a job transfer.
Under the guidance of his daughter Manjula Ramaswamy, the institute had won accolades and wide acclaim for its pure and traditional art form. Till his last, Ramamoorthy was actively involved in his students’ performances and used to take pride in their achievements at various platforms.
A few months ago the classical dance fraternity was abuzz with activity celebrating Ramamoorthy’s centenary year.
