A Smoky Mountain Bluegrass Christmas: The Sounds of the Season
As the crisp winter air settles over the Smoky Mountains, a unique blend of tradition, warmth, and festive cheer fills the valleys. One of the most delightful ways to celebrate the holiday season in this beautiful region is through the sounds of bluegrass Christmas music. With its roots deeply embedded in Appalachian culture, bluegrass offers a distinct, soulful twist on holiday classics that warms the heart and lifts the spirit.
Imagine gathering around a cozy fire, the scent of pine mingling with the aroma of hot cocoa, as the lively strumming of a banjo and the resonant twang of a mandolin play familiar tunes. From traditional carols to original compositions inspired by the season, bluegrass Christmas music carries a rich tapestry of storytelling that mirrors the snowy landscapes of the Smokies.
Artists have embraced this genre, creating albums that capture the essence of rural life and holiday spirit. Songs like “Jingle Bells” and “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” along with the reflective strains of “Auld Lang Syne” when performed in a bluegrass style, feel both nostalgic and fresh, breathing new life into beloved melodies.
What makes bluegrass Christmas music truly special is its communal aspect. Jam sessions erupt in local venues, where musicians and listeners come together to share songs and stories, reminiscent of the region’s rich musical heritage. These gatherings not only celebrate the music but also the spirit of togetherness that the holidays bring.
Whether you’re a lifelong bluegrass fan or new to the genre, immersing yourself in Smoky Mountain bluegrass Christmas music is a wonderful way to embrace the holiday season. So, put on your favorite bluegrass Christmas album, cozy up with loved ones, and let the music transport you to a winter wonderland filled with joy, laughter, and the spirit of giving. After all, there’s no better way to celebrate Christmas than by sharing the gift of music that resonates with the soul!

Rain Carol Ann Duffy
Not so hot as this for a hundred years. You were where I was going. I was in tears. I surrendered my heart to the judgement of my peers.
A century’s heat in the garden, fierce as love. You returned on the day I had to leave. I mimed the full, rich, busy life I had to live.
Hotter than hell. I burned for you day and night; got bits of your body wrong, bits of it right, in the huge mouth of the dark, in the bite of the light.
I planted a rose, burnt orange, the colour of flame, gave it the last of the water, gave it your name. It flared back at the sun in a perfect rhyme.
Then the rain came, like stammered kisses at first on the back of my neck. I unfurled my fist for the rain to caress with its lips. I turned up my face,
and water flooded my mouth, baptised my head, and the rainclouds gathered like midnight overhead, and the rain came down like a lover comes to a bed.

Let's settle this once and for all! Hear the story of the tail-less demon and vote on whether he deserved it or not.
This is one of the most popular Catalan Christmas carols. It's a song that has been passed down from generation to generation and many people feel sorry for the demon. Here's the song with its lyrics in Catalan (if you want to sing along!) and the translation to English.
Allà sota una penya
n'és nat un Jesuset,
nuet, nuet. (x2)
There, under a crag
a little Jesus is born
naked, naked.
Que n'és fill d'una verge
i està mig mort de fred,
nuet, nuet,
i està mig mort de fred.
He's the son of a virgin mother
and is half dead from the cold,
naked, naked,
and he's half dead from the cold.
El bon Josep li deia:
Jesús que esteu fredet,
pobret, pobret. (x2)
Good Joseph told him:
"Jesus, you're so cold"
poor little one, poor little one.
La verge responia:
per falta d'abriguet,
pobret, pobret,
per falta d'abriguet.
The virgin answered:
it's for lack of a coat,
poor little one, poor little one,
for lack of a coat.
Pastors hi arribaren
allà a la mitjanit,
cric-cric, cric-cric. (x2)
Shepherds arrived
around midnight,
[onomatopeic sound].
Mirant com tots hi anaven
del gran fins al més xic,
cric-cric, cric-cric,
del gran fins al més xic.
Watching how all of them were going there
from the oldest to the youngest,
[onomatopeic sound]
from the oldest to the youngest.
Comencen a alegrar-se
tot saltant i ballant,
galant, galant. (x2)
They start getting happy
jumping and dancing
excellent, excellent.
Danses i contradanses
per alegrar l'infant,
galant, galant,
per alegrar l'infant.
Dances and country dances
to make the child happy.
Excellent, excellent,
to make the child happy.
Per la cova passava (or a prop d'allí passava)
un dimoni escuat,
carat, carat!
Near the cave
a tail-less demon was passing by.
Sentint tanta gatzara
també s'hi és posat,
carat, carat,
també s'hi és posat.
Hearing so much clamour
he joined in,
he joined in.
Els pastorets en veure'l
s'hi tiren al damunt,
patim, patum. (x2)
When the little shepherds see him
they jump on him,
[onomatopeic sound of beating someone].
I tantes n'hi mesuren
que el deixen mig difunt,
patim, patum.
Que el deixen mig difunt.
And they kick him so well
that they leave him half deceased,
[onomatopeic sound of beating someone]
that they leave him half deceased.
Per fi surt el dimoni
d'allí bastant calent,
bon vent, bon vent.
Finally the demon gets out
of there quite beaten up,
good riddance, good riddance! [literally "good wind", explanation of this expression here]
I amb la cua entre les cames
se'n va dret a l'infern,
bon vent, bon vent.
Se'n va dret a l'infern.
And with the tail between his legs
he goes straight to hell,
"good riddance", "good riddance",
he goes straight to hell.
That's the song. Now, do you think it was okay for the shepherds to beat the demon, because demons are dangerous? Or do you pity the demon who wanted to join the party?

Bro some idiot just asked me where you go out to get your Bingmas tree for Skinmas and like clearly you're Jiuish or something because every practitioner knows the Bingmas tree rises from the floor in a small cocoon before breaking free into a full sized Bingmas tree complete with infantile decorative growths that expand the closer you get to Skinmas. You feed him holiday spirit and add popcorn garlands and such yourself and watch him flourish and once the holidays are over wither and scatter on the floor and then we eat the remains to honor the heavenly bingpillar
People are so silly. Buy a bingmas tree? Cut one down? That's so stupid. Lol

So, apparently I dreamed uploading these pieces, could have sworn I did, but I can't find them, lol. (I'm back from uni and going through my art stuff to figure out what has & hasn't been uploaded.)
Two stress drawings I did mid-October when I needed a break from my classwork. They're re-works of 2 very old designs for Carol & Macbeth towards, I suppose the end-ish of Lost Children.
These are MILES better, I put a lot more thought into their design using some of the colour theory and other stuff I've learnt about character design from uni this year :)
