23 Republican Senators & 124 Congressmen signed an amicus brief to the Supreme Court asking for a 50 state ban on mifepristone, a drug safer than tylenol that is standard treatment for abortion & miscarriages, "due to safety concerns". The brief DARES to argue that banning the life saving drug would save women from 'reproductive control'. (x) These 147 people would rather have women die of sepsis than let women control their own bodies. If your representatives are on this list, call them and tell their office you will be voting against them in the next election because they asked SCOTUS to throw the US medical drug system into chaos at the cost of American lives.

it looks like the water is (crystal clear)
“And this is the last time,” she said. It wasn’t a question.
serena x abbie, 2k words. ao3
The whole way home, Serena hoped she wouldn’t need to regret leaving her umbrella hanging beside her favorite (well, final surviving) evening bag when she left that morning. The occasional droplet of rain appeared without warning on the part of her hair, her eyelashes, the back of her hand. The sunny morning weather left her feeling optimistic, and she’d felt as though bringing the umbrella would be daring the rain to come.
It came despite her efforts to will it away, but only drop by drop as she emerged from the subway tunnel onto the sidewalk around the corner from her building. She amused herself; playing a game, counting the drops she felt between each tree and the next. One, two, three. One. It kept her mind off of “Oh, Serena, there’s more to life than work,” and off of the fluffy bed she hadn’t shared in three weeks, and the box she kept meaning to pack Abbie’s mugs and jackets into.
Three weeks, she thought as she made it to her stoop, but it could’ve been a year with how the longing stretched out the days.
When she got inside, she threw her keys into the bowl, let her jacket and bag fall to the floor.
“There’s more to life than work, Serena.” She played Jack’s words over in her head again, the last in the series of lectures, perspectives, and opinions she’d been subjected to over the last three weeks since Abbie had run off. She was going to stay late until Jack rushed her out of the office. “It’s Friday,” he said. “Go have fun,” he said. “Maybe see some people. There’s more to life than work, Serena.”
She’d known what he meant. She had also known what Alex meant when she said “maybe she’s just scared, she’s not used to,” she gestured, making circles with her hands, “feelings.”
“Honestly, Serena, I think you’ve given her enough chances,” was what Olivia said. Casey agreed with her, “she’s being unfair if she expects you to wait like this.”
Tracey and Kelly had sat across from her at dinner with sympathetic looks on their faces, but their only advice had been: “she loves you, I’m sure she’ll come back.” Then they’d smiled at each other so sweetly Serena wanted to cry.
She was exhausted.
The rain slowly began to pick up, faster and faster as she made her way home, until it was pouring. Though she sped up, nearly running by the time she made it inside, her suit was thoroughly soaked.
She rushed to her bedroom and changed into sweats, then to the kitchen to put the kettle on. Her mind swam with thoughts of Abbie. She decided to do what she had done since she was a kid: when she needed to think, the pillow fort came out.
As the water boiled, she pulled the cushions off of the couch. She laid a throw blanket down, then pillows on one end of it. The cushions made the walls, then a blanket over the top completed the structure. Before she got in, she turned on her stereo and put her favorite CD on. The water was hot by then, so she poured it into a mug with a waiting peppermint tea bag and crawled inside.
It had been three weeks since Abbie left for Washington. Three weeks of waiting by the phone, one since she’d called, one since she hadn’t heard back. She was losing any hope. She wasn’t going to beg her to come back, of that she was sure, but besides that she didn’t know what she would do. If Abbie came back, if she didn’t. She knew she still loved her.
Their relationship had never been rock solid, years of on and off had made her tired. Abbie was so skittish. Serena never knew what it was about her that scared Abbie. Maybe it was their differences in politics, or maybe it was Serena’s openness about her sexuality. Or, maybe it had nothing to do with Serena, but with Abbie’s past. Serena knew how Abbie’s experiences had broken her trust a long time ago. It was hard to mend a break so profound, and Serena couldn’t do it for her. She hoped Abbie felt safe with her, but she had never known for sure.
Abbie had initiated every time they got together, but Serena broke them up as many times as Abbie did. Every time, Serena swore it was for good, but she had never been able to, nor wanted to say no when Abbie came back to her with sweet pleases and “I still love you”s. It seemed like every time they got close enough to be comfortable, something happened. Abbie got a new job, Serena had a heartbreaking case, they fought. Serena truly thought this was the last time, more than any before. It was the longest they had ever lasted, six months of stability, of Abbie coming over after work and Serena dropping coffee off in the morning. Six months of comfort and Serena thought that they could keep this going for a long, long time.
Until the job in Washington opened up and Abbie began to think seriously about it. “I can’t just pass up an opportunity like this, Serena,” she said. Serena asked her to stay, and that was the end of it. Abbie had packed her bags and headed down the next day with hardly a goodbye.
It wasn’t like there weren’t opportunities in the city.
Serena still didn’t know what she would do if or when Abbie came back, to her or New York. That was when she heard the knock on the door.
She paused the CD when she got up, her heart jumping, wondering if it would be her at the door. She found it was: Abbie Carmichael standing in her doorframe in jeans and a t-shirt, dripping wet.
“Hi,” she said shakily.
“Hi,” Serena said, high-pitched. She felt angry and hopeful at the same time, the love she had for Abbie nearly rung in her ears. She motioned her inside.
“I hope I’m not interrupting any plans,” Abbie said, untying her wet shoelaces in the entranceway, shedding her coat.
“Yeah, I was clearly very busy,” Serena said, making a “stay there” motion with her hands as she headed into the apartment and turned into the hallway. Abbie heeded her nonverbal instructions, standing still with her arms crossed, the chill in the room sunk into her skin.
“What were you thinking about?” Abbie asked, projecting her voice into the room, eyeing the pillows on the floor.
Serena sighed, returning from her bathroom with a towel. She thought again and grabbed her dry clothes too, a sweatshirt and shorts that were hers to begin with. She handed them all to Abbie with a questioning look on her face, then she remembered the pillow fort. “Oh. Nothing.”
Serena turned around as Abbie changed, not ready to see her undress even though it was so familiar.
“You can turn around now,” Abbie said when she was finished. “What’s wrong?”
“Don’t ask me that,” Serena said, guarding herself with her arms crossed in front of her.
“Ok,” Abbie said, and after a beat, “You called me.”
“Six days ago.” Serena’s reply was quick and Abbie could almost feel it slicing her.
“I’m sorry. It was right before the third round of interviews. I couldn’t make it back until now.”
“I know, you were busy,” Serena scoffed, “You could’ve called me back, I thought,”
“No, that’s,”
“I mean, I just thought you didn’t want to talk, you didn’t have to come here,”
“I did,” Abbie said. “I’m sorry, I know it was, cowardly… I had to, I couldn’t, I think, um.” Serena looked like she might cry and she might scream. Abbie rested her right hand against the back of her neck and tried again. “I wanted to, in person, I had to see you. I didn’t take the job.” Serena nods.
“Better late than never?” Abbie said, a self-deprecating truth and the question that lay under it. Serena gave her a weak but real smile, and she hoped she heard the start of the apology she wanted.
“Yeah,” Serena said. She didn’t know if it was an agreement. She turned and crawled into the fort, tired and taken off guard. She lay down on her back with her hands on her stomach. Abbie stood in the doorway until Serena waved her over.
“I caught a homicide, today.” Abbie said, joining Serena, the hardwood creaking as she lowered each part of her body, interrupting the quiet patter that the rain had been reduced to. “Well, the Duchess county police did.”
“Oh? Foreign national, multi-state, or federal land?” Serena asked, her eyes still on the ceiling.
“Federal land.”
“So there really is some guy with a chainsaw hiding out in the Adirondacks then.”
“Maybe,” Abbie said, as neutral as ever, “that’s out of my district.”
“Reassuring.”
“The FDR house. Some teenager, docent kid found him with three stab wounds to the chest, one to the groin, laid out on the rug with his wheelchair beside him.”
Serena exhaled. They never get less gruesome. Even when they’re a little funny. “That’ll send a message.”
“What do you mean?”
“He have a wife?”
“Yeah, why?”
“He was cheating on her.”
“Did the sixth sense come with the bangs?” Abbie teased, and felt the familiarity of it acutely. Serena raised her eyebrows.
“I’m just saying that when I think of FDR I think of mistresses.”
“Not the New Deal, the Depression? World War II?”
“That too, but I doubt he was stabbed in the crotch for his liberal politics.”
“I guess that’s probably right.”
All either of them could hear was the rain.
“You left me.” Serena broke the silence.
“I did,” Abbie said. “But,”
“No,” Serena said. Abbie saw her clench her hands where they were clasped over her stomach. “You told me goodbye and went off to DC, maybe forever. You left me.”
Abbie didn’t have a reply for that. They lay there, on the floor, silent except for their breathing. Both looked at the ceiling for long enough it started to ache. Abbie took a steadying breath. “I wanted you to come with me.” She wished Serena would yell. Or laugh at her. Or tell her to go fuck herself. She heard her sniffle and turned to look at her.
“I wanted you to stay with me,” Serena said. It felt like forever before Abbie replied.
“What were you going to say, when you called?”
Tears began to fall from the corners of Serena’s eyes. She didn’t want to cry.
“Hey,” Abbie said. She turned to her side and touched Serena’s shoulder. This was why she needed to be here in person. She felt awful, guilty. It wasn’t the first time she’d made her cry, but it never felt as bad as this. She knew she had fucked up, she knew she shouldn’t have left the second she got to JFK three weeks ago. It terrified her to know so deeply, to feel so wrong the whole time she was there. Through interviews and receptions and conversations, Abbie never stopped thinking about Serena’s face when she asked her to stay, that wounded look; and after she closed the door, hearing the sobs Serena hadn’t broken into in front of her. Nobody ever cared about her like Serena did. When she got the call, her mistake had sunk in even further.
Serena leaned into the touch. It felt so good, so right. She wiped her face with her sweatshirt and sniffled. It was dark inside the fort, and they were close enough to hear each other breathe. Serena heard Abbie’s quicken.
“I was going to tell you,” Serena said, “That I love you. That I want you in my life. That if you came back,”
Abbie’s heart beat was loud enough to hear.
“That if you came back, I wanted you back.” She was crying again.
Abbie’s voice cracked when she said, “And, is that still, true?” She was nearly whispering. They had moved closer as they talked. Serena took Abbie’s warm hand.
“I wasn’t sure,” Serena said, “After you didn’t call back.”
“I’m sorry,” Abbie said, running her thumb across the back of Serena’s hand.
“I understand,” Serena said.
“And now?” “Now, it’s still true,” she said decidedly. “I want you back Abbie, I love you.”
Abbie’s heart beat fast, so fast Serena could feel it in her fingertips.
“Is that so scary?”
“Not anymore,” Abbie said. “I know now.”
“Know what?” Serena asked, with a hint of impatience.
“I love you, and I’m staying.”
Serena took a deep breath. “You’re certain?” She said.
“I’ve never been more sure of anything,” Abbie said.
When she heard it, Serena could feel how much she meant it. They moved even closer, their bodies touching almost everywhere. Their faces were inches apart when Serena stopped.
“And this is the last time,” she said.
It wasn’t a question, but Abbie confirmed it, saying “This is the last time.”
Finally, they kissed. Serena’s whole body felt like it was on fire, she was so full of joy and relief. Abbie’s hands were solid and resting firmly against her waist, then lower as they kissed hungrier and hungrier. Three weeks was far too long, but the wait was finally, finally over. Abbie felt right. Serena raised herself up, and, in doing so, toppled the cushions, and the roof-blanket floated down on top of them. They burst into laughter. Serena had a surprising amount of trouble removing the throw from her head but emerged into the evening light in her living room. The rain had stopped. Abbie took in the sight of Serena above her, her messy hair and thin t-shirt; which she pinched between her fingers at the hem.
“Abbie,” Serena said, in a tone Abbie would recognize anywhere. “Let’s get off of this rug.”
Abbie happily obliged.
On Monday, Jack asked Serena how her weekend went.
“Good,” she said with a smile. “Very, very good.”

Please never vote for any of these people again
Sorry, St Bluebell isn’t here today.  Besides how much I hate Hobby Lobby, the one potentially rage inducing issue I bring up on this site is voting.  After I have encouraged all of you to register and cast your votes, these people voted to nullify the election results in states where their candidate didn’t win.  They did so *after* the assault on the Capitol Building, after they had seen the consequences of their attempt to undermine the peaceful transfer of power in this country.
Every year our government becomes more powerful, gains more power over the daily lives of its citizens.  Its knows where you live, it knows who you talk to on the phone, it knows what library books you checked out, it knows what you had for breakfast.  The most important issue facing us today is whether we, the people, will ensure that we have a government we can trust before we lose all control of it.  Every single one of these people should be primaried by their own party and never allowed to hold any public office again.

My fan-cast for the MCU version of the X-Men. I’m having my personal X-Men line-up be based on X-Men Evolution. Also, two things I must say. First of all, I realize I made some spelling errors with Storm and Kitty’s last names. Sorry! Second, do NOT tell me that any of the actors from the original movies should be cast because that isn’t likely to happen and I base my fan-casts on casting choices that could likely happen (With the exception of my choice for X-23 because she’s difficult to cast and the casting for her is perfect). But I will say that Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, and Ian McKellen were the absolute most perfect versions of Wolverine, Charles Xavier, and Magneto respectively. I also made sure to cast an Egyptian actor for Apocalypse because his backstory is very much tied into his Egyptian background. X-Men is my favorite of all superheroes, so this is something that means A LOT to me and I am super passionate about. Let me know what you think and be respectful. Enjoy! Ralph Fiennes as Professor Charles Xavier Robbie Amell as Cyclops/Scott Summers Bella Thorne as Jean Grey/Phoenix Yetide Badaki as Storm/Ororo Munroe Robert Carlyle as Magneto Elizabeth Gillies as Rogue Charlize Theron as Mystique Joel Edgerton as Wolverine RJ Mitte as Gambit Rowan Blanchard as Kitty Pryde/Shadowcat Robbie Kay as Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler Jeffrey Wright as Beast
Jennifer Morrison as Emma Frost Arden Cho as Psylocke Patrick Schwarzenegger as Iceman Dacre Montgomery as Angel Keenan Tracey as Havok/Alex Summers Madison Hu as Jubilee Sean Dapner as Colossus Dafne Keen as X-23 Ioan Gruffudd as Senator Robert Kelly
Lucy Liu as Lady Deathstrike Josh Hutcherson as Avalanche Moises Arias as Toad Ryan Hurst as Sabertooth Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson as The Juggernaut Uma Thurman as Destiny/Irene Adler Liam Hemsworth as Pyro Jason Nott as The Blob Amr Waked as Apocalypse

Immediately Remove The Republicans Who Voted In Favor of the Terrorists’ Demands
It’s not just Trump who has to go. The Constitution is clear. Any member of Congress who participates in an “insurrection or rebellion” is in violation of the oath they took to defend and uphold the Constitution — and thus they may no longer serve in Congress. Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment, written initially to exclude Confederate Civil War traitors, says that "No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress … who … having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress … to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same[.]"
There are 147 Republican members of the Senate and the House who late last Wednesday night (and into the early hours of Thursday morning) — just hours after a domestic terrorist attack on the Capitol which they and Trump helped to incite — voted to overturn (throw out) the legal and already-certified votes of millions of Americans in the states of Pennsylvania and Arizona. It was an act of sedition and a flagrant violation of their oath of office. Legal experts and other members of Congress have called it an act of treason. THIS MUST BE DEALT WITH. They must be, as the Constitution requires, removed from Congress.
Here are their names. And to be clear: The cop-killing terrorist mob who attacked, trashed, took over and shut down our United States Congress for seven hours — the first time in history this has ever happened — their terrorist demands and their stated intention was to prevent the counting of the votes of millions of Americans and illegally give the election to Trump. So what did these 147 Republican lawmakers do just hours after these domestic terrorists stormed the Capitol in the hopes of killing, harming or kidnapping some of their fellow representatives, including their Republican Vice-President!? They voted to give in to the terrorists’ demands! And do EXACTLY what the cop-killing mob had demanded they do: Throw out the votes of the American people! Imagine if on the night of 9/11, 147 Republican members of Congress voted to give in to the demands of Al Qaeda. We never would have stood for that and we would have had them all arrested. But of course there’s a difference: Bin Laden wanted to take down buildings in the financial and military capitols of America and kill 3,000 people in the process. These 147 Republicans just wanted to take down American Democracy.
ALL 147 OF THEM MUST BE REMOVED IMMEDIATELY PER SECTION 3 OF THE 14th AMENDMENT OF THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION:

The Way You Held Me Up
“Sure,” Kelly says, in acknowledgement, pulling Tracey's own vocabulary out with none of the blades.
Tracey's on an edge. Kelly keeps her away from it.
a/n: Tracey x Kelly. Casey Novak is in it too, implied Novelly. Implied redhead/redhead relationship.
Warning for suicidal ideation, depression, and eating disorders; though I did my very best to write in a sensitive way. It's more about the relationship than the struggles. Title from "This Will Be Our Year" by Dear Nora.
“I’m always worried,” Tracey says. She’s trying to wrap it up in sarcasm, tuck it between layers of professional dedication and personal concern. Yes, all of that is there, Kelly knows this, and she feels the same way. Every case she tries lodges itself in her chest, spine, the back of her tongue while they’re trying it, after all. Some stick longer. Don’t I know it, she wants to say. She wants to. Kelly isn’t just talking about this case, she’s not just talking about cases. Tracey’s always worried. More than Jack or Arthur, though the jury’s still out on Casey.
“I know,” Kelly offers, trying to be supportive. “You don’t have to knock yourself down like this all the time.” She feels the room get colder. The window isn’t open.
“Sure,” Tracey replies, and it could cut someone else. She always tries, doesn’t she.
---
“Don’t you think you should eat something?” Kelly says as she takes her coat off, already resigned to the response.
“I’m fine.” There it is. She expects it, still, she doesn’t want to hear it. Tracey isn’t fine. Kelly can’t tell if she doesn’t know that or if she’s unwilling to say it. Probably a bit of both.
“OK,” Kelly says, not trying to hide her disbelief. “I got you some Pad Thai anyway.” She watches Tracey go through a few reactions, ones she knows well from careful study. Eyes wide, then narrowed. “Extra lime, no sprouts,” Kelly continues, “I’m not stupid.”
“I said I didn’t want anything before you left,” Tracey says, almost wounded, and Kelly’s baser instincts want to crush the styrofoam cup of iced coffee she’s holding because can’t she accept something for once?
Kelly sticks to the facts. “That’s true,” she says, as she hands her the box and a fork. Tracey doesn’t touch it.
---
“I’m begging you to pass this one to Jack,” Kelly says. Begging is her last resort. She’s struggling to keep the frustration out of her voice. She knows antagonizing Tracey isn’t going to help her. It’s last minute, and late evening, they’re the only ones in the office, she doesn’t have many options, and this case feels far too relevant.
“What, you don’t think I can handle it because it’s sad?” Kelly knows Tracey knows that isn’t what she meant. The frustration builds, but melts just as fast. Kelly also knows this isn’t her fault.
“At the very least, let me take the lead on it,” Kelly says in a softer voice. Tracey blinks, but Kelly sees the tears. She always sees them.
“I’m not going to shatter,” Tracey says, but she actually looks more breakable than Kelly’s ever seen her, eyes downcast, wearing a sweater she's gotten too small for.
“I didn’t say you would,” Kelly says, and yeah, she thinks, Tracey won’t. She’s tough. She still doesn’t deserve this.
“What gives?” Tracey asks, trying to squeeze a justification out of her.
Kelly considers her words and sighs, looking in her eyes, speaking quietly. “I just wish you’d make things easier on yourself.”
---
"You need to drop this," Tracey had said, the same edge to the words. Kelly had wanted to defend herself, but every word coming to her mind, she knows, was going to make things worse. She'd only sighed, pulled her coat on with a bit more force than usual. It pays, sometimes, to be the calm one.
She doesn't need to drop it. She's right. But sure, screw her for wanting Tracey to still be alive by the end of this case. The thought sends a wave of fear, regret through her. Maybe she should've stayed, what if-- she doesn't let herself finish that thought.
She's taking her time walking to the subway, the scenic route, as it were. A newsstand; a pack of gum, resisting the cigarettes she doesn’t smoke anymore. Some scenery.
Kelly’s sure Tracey’s still upset, and, for her part, It doesn’t always feel good to be right. It’s loud in the station. The snow melting off boots turns to steam quickly in the heat. The crowd is a comfort, she’s invisible as she slips onto the subway.
So much for anonymity. She’s confronted by Tracey in a bright red coat. Messy curls and big brown eyes. Red eyes.
“Was there only one car?”
“Have you been crying?”
She looks away. Kelly doesn’t think before taking her in her arms.
“You’re right. I’m sorry.”
Kelly holds tighter.
---
"Are you alright?" Casey asks her over coffee, in front of the courthouse, before a meeting. She isn't. "You look possessed."
Kelly scoffs. She always had a way with words. "I'm fine."
"No you're not." She also doesn't take well to bullshit.
"I didn't sleep well," Kelly says, which isn't a lie. Casey sees right through it.
"Why?" she asks. Kelly doesn't have to answer. Tracey walks past them, holding a cup. Kelly tears the edge of her coffee sleeve and watches her all the way up the steps. "Oh," Casey says. "My advice?" she says, "let it go. Dating the boss is never worth it." Kelly files that comment away for later, because she and Elizabeth hadn’t been as secret as Casey seems to think. She wants to tell her that she's misread the situation, that there's nothing to let go. Casey would know she's lying.
"I can't," Kelly whispers, her voice tired, and it's the truth. Casey realizes she's misread this.
"I'm sorry," she's softened her tone. She looks at her watch, she has to be somewhere. "I gotta go," she pats Kelly's shoulder, a bit awkwardly, "You'll figure it out."
---
“You know that you could die, right?” Kelly says. Tracey tenses. She knows she shouldn't be here, but she's so scared. Tracey didn't answer when she called. They've been talking around this for an hour outside her building as the sun goes down, on the step, in their coats; but after a longer silence than the others, she can't keep herself from saying it.
“Everybody dies.” Tracey's voice is quiet, like she doesn't want her to hear it, really.
“Most don’t kill themselves.”
“I’m not suicidal,” she replies. Kelly picks up a trace of uncertainty that makes her blood run cold.
“You have a problem,” Kelly says, even though she knows it's not what Tracey wants to hear.
“Everyone has problems.”
“Sure,” Kelly says, in acknowledgement, pulling Tracey's own vocabulary out with none of the blades. She can't keep her composure anymore. “I can't,” she says, stops herself as it comes out high pitched, hurting. She swallows it down. Tracey takes her hand, pulls her in, insistent, as she wraps herself around her.
---
"It's not a good time." Tracey's words come muffled through the door. Kelly's sure it isn't a good time, but she left her files in there and she needs them.
"I left my files in there and I need them," she says.
Tracey lets her come in. She looks tiny. She's barely meeting Kelly's gaze. Kelly wishes she knew what happened, today or in general.
Kelly shuffles through the papers on the desk, finding her own quickly. As she looks up, she catches Tracey watching her.
"What?" she asks, hoping that nothing about her appearance is wrong.
"Just watching you," Tracey says, unguarded, genuine, like she didn't think about what she was going to say. If she blushes, Kelly doesn't see it. It's unexpected-- not unwelcome.
---
“I, um,” Tracey says. Tracey, who is standing, pale, rosy, at her doorstep at 12:30 AM, says. “I’m sorry, I woke you up, I shouldn’t’ve, I’ll go,” Kelly looks at Tracey in a way that stops her mouth.
“You’re not going anywhere,” she says as she opens the door wider. Tracey nods, biting a nail. Kelly guides her inside, then onto the couch, a gentle hand against her shoulder blades. She takes her coat. Tracey is wearing street clothes, jeans and a t-shirt. She feels almost naked in her shorts and camisole, her robe. Tracey did wake her up. She can wake her up whenever she needs her, whenever she wants her.
“I was going to,” Tracey starts. She tries again, “I couldn’t sleep, and then, I, I caught myself--”
Kelly’s sure she can’t hear whatever’s coming next. Tracey doesn’t think she can get it out. A hand on her arm and Tracey doesn’t keep trying. “Tea?” she asks. Tracey accepts. Mint? she nods. Kelly can’t tell if she’s more comfortable or spaced out. She puts water on to boil and they sit there, listening to the street, the sounds the stove makes, the sounds the water makes as it starts to boil. There are no lights on in her apartment, but the curtains are open. Kelly watches the lights outside reflect over Tracey’s eyes. Neither of them says a word. The kettle whistles.
They stay wordless as the teapot is emptied. Kelly thinks, anyway. She falls asleep with Tracey’s head against her chest, with her arm around her shoulders, safe, with her, for now. She wakes up in the same place at dawn with no sign of Tracey except two more mugs on the drying rack.
---
“I’m glad you’re here,” Kelly says when she sees Tracey walk in, her words coming out more nervous than she intends. Her mind has been racing since she woke up alone; what-ifs that she tried to cut off before she imagined them. Tracey is here and she proves all those scenarios wrong. She seems astonishingly normal in her sweater, like nothing happened. But the grateful, exhausted, fierce, defiant look that Kelly is met with as soon as they’re alone in her office is enough to reassure her.
It’s sharp. The way it makes her smile is exhilaratingly familiar.
It’s the way she’d felt the day Arthur Branch had introduced the two of them. Tracey had given her seemingly endless difficult tasks, to see if she could handle it. Kelly told her about halfway through the day that, while she could finish it all, she felt it would be more efficient to have some help; and Tracey had given her an impressed, mischievous smile.
It’s the way she felt the first time they were together outside of work, drinks on a Friday, only the two of them, in a bar that played jazz over the speakers.
So, she thinks. That’s what she’s been trying to tell herself.
---
“I’m cold,” Tracey says, “Are you cold?”They’re sitting in the office right around 5 and the temperature is quite tolerable.
“Not particularly,” Kelly says, not looking up from the law journal she’s reading.
“Why am I so cold? I’m freezing,” Tracey says to nobody in particular, releasing the words into the space. Tracey genuinely seems not to know why she’s cold. Or why she’s been complaining of headaches for weeks.
“I could make a case,” Kelly says, teasing, closing the book. “Though it may be circumstantial.”
Tracey wiggles her nose at her. It’s unreasonably cute. Maybe she’s putting some pieces together, here.
“I’m done with this,” Kelly says, “and you haven’t turned a page in ten minutes. Will you come get some dinner with me?”
This is the kind of invitation that could open the door to impropriety, Tracey thinks; but she certainly doesn’t mind that, even if it comes right after the slightest bit of pushing. As they step into the elevator, Tracey thinks she catches Kelly looking at her, not with the protectiveness and fear she’s developed over the past few months, but something else, heated, deep. Desire, she lets herself hope.
---
“Hey,” Tracey says when Kelly walks in the door, sounding OK, for once. She can’t believe she’s this happy to see yogurt.
“Breakfast!” Kelly says, because it’s all she can do to exclaim. She can’t believe how happy she is to be on the receiving end of rolling eyes, but the flutters from the smirk are to be expected.
“Coconut,” Tracey says, wielding the little cup like a trophy. Kelly thinks she deserves it, among other things.
"Is it good?" Kelly asks. She doesn't expect Tracey to hold out the spoon for her. It is good.
---
“Good morning, Casey,” Kelly says as she walks past her, just a hair late, carrying two coffees.
“Morning.” Casey hasn’t seen her look this normal in weeks. Not run down. She wonders if maybe whatever was going on with Kibre has blown over. Casey knows Kelly gets about up to contented, not beyond; so if she’s reached “good morning” levels, it’s a good sign. Tracey walks up just a moment later. Too curious not to watch, she sees her place a hand on Kelly’s shoulder, then she sees the way they both smile to see one another. Tracey takes a coffee out of Kelly’s hand.
Casey guesses that their whole bureau must have set their alarm clocks slow because that tall redheaded junior is rushing up after them. She thinks she remembers Kelly mentioning that one. Said she was talented, Casey might think about poaching her to Sex Crimes if the opportunity came up. She probably won’t, for her own sake. Though apparently she’s in the minority on this one, she’s had enough of office romances. She makes a mental note to ask about her.
---
“That’s beautiful,” Tracey says, regarding an orchid Kelly keeps on her mantle. Kelly wonders, only briefly, if she’s making the right choice here. Tracey’s her boss, and she’s just gone through a lot, and she’d seen all of it and they’re so close, that she worries. She knows, though, that she crossed that bridge a long time ago, then crossed it again having Tracey in her apartment, cooking for her, playing music she knows they both like instead of taking her out somewhere that could possibly be construed as platonic. Since then, it’s been a question of when.
“Nun’s hood. Very hard to cultivate with the amount of sun I get.”
“It looks like,” Tracey says, her trademark grin that comes before a joke starting to shine. Kelly doesn’t give her the satisfaction, however tempting it is. She nods.
“Doesn’t it?” she says, hovering on the edge of a laugh, setting down her glass of wine. “It’s beautiful.” She inches closer to Tracey on the couch, puts her feet on the floor instead of curling them under herself; so as to ensure less of a barrier should that gap be closed. She has to let Tracey make this move first. Tracey may have more professional power, but Kelly already knows she wields a formidable amount of interpersonal power.
Tracey rolls her eyes and smirks, looks, somehow, more like herself than she ever has before. She closes the remaining couple of inches. Kelly tastes like wine and cherries and salt; and Tracey can feel her world narrowing in that moment. There is nothing else, Tracey thinks. Hopes there’ll never be.
---
“Yes” is the only word that Kelly can possibly say, even now that she’s stopped counting the times Tracey’s had her like this. It’s the only word in her mind, it’s the only thing that feels right on her lips, that feels right against Traceys. Yes please, yes there, yes again. Tracey is in her arms, solid and grounded and warm and breathing, heavy against her neck, collarbone, wrist. Here. Alive.
Kelly prefers this kind of embrace; desperate, hungry, closer and closer.
Every time they touch doesn’t have to be for reassurance from fear. Security can be Tracey’s fingers pressing into her hips, can be soft sheets and light from the street in her room. She isn’t scared.
She doesn’t realize that she’s started to cry. Tracey looks up, panicked, stops what she’s doing. She sniffles, disoriented at the absence of touch.
“Are you OK? Is, did, what happened?”
“I’m,” Kelly says as she raises herself up on her elbows, her voice quiet with want and with tears, tone colored by the smile raising her cheeks, “so happy.” The look of relief, affection in Tracey’s eyes makes her dizzy. A hand on her cheek, she looks into her eyes. “You’re here,” she says, thinks; alive, with me.
Tracey sticks to the perfect, inevitable, unbelievable facts. “I’m here.”

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 20/03/2021 (Central Cee, KSI/YUNGBLUD/Polo G)
On the tenth week that a song appears on the UK Singles Chart, it becomes likely that it has a cut to its streaming numbers by the Official Charts Company, particularly if it’s still in the top 10 and especially if it’s #1. So, the streaming and sales do not change, but the Official Charts Company just weighs them differently. This means that it’s often that songs reliant on streaming – read: most of the chart given that the UK doesn’t factor in radio – drop intensely on that particular week. Therefore, we switched out our Pokémon and “drivers license” by Olivia Rodrigo has been replaced at #1 after nine weeks by “Wellerman”, an 1800s sea shanty from New Zealand covered by Nathan Evans and remixed as a pop-house song by 220 KID and Billen Ted. Of course. I don’t know all of the complexities behind this rule but I do know it shakes up the chart at the cost of it being ridiculously inaccurate – I do think “drivers license” is probably still the biggest song in the country. “drivers license” is at #18 now, by the way. Yikes. Welcome back to REVIEWING THE CHARTS.
Tumblr media
Rundown
We have a pretty interesting week, to say the least, but before all that, we can get through this brief rundown as always as we cover the UK Top 75 and all of what’s happening over there, since that’s what I cover. First of all, we do have some big drop-outs, like #1 hits “Roses” by SAINt JHN and remixed by Imanbek that seemingly had its second wind pummelled this week, and “positions” by Ariana Grande leaving somewhat prematurely. We also have “Mr. Brightside” by the Killers retreating to the other 25 slots I don’t cover because, well, of course, as well as “Midnight Sky” by Miley Cyrus and sadly, “Be the One” by Rudimental featuring MORGAN, TIKE and Digga D, but that’s all for the notable drops out of the chart. Still falling within the chart other than the aforementioned “drivers license” are... basically all of the Drake songs from last week falling behind the top 10 and even the top 20, and two of them being behind “Leave the Door Open” now – thankfully. “What’s Next” is at #20, “Lemon Pepper Freestyle” featuring Rick Ross is at #25 and “Wants and Needs” featuring Lil Baby is at #28. We also have a handful of other notable fallers like “WITHOUT YOU” by the Kid LAROI at #27, “Hold On” by Justin Bieber off of the debut at #31 (could rebound next week when the album makes its impact), “Paradise” by MEDUZA and Dermot Kennedy at #35, “Anxious” by AJ Tracey off of the debut to #45, “Anyone” by Justin Bieber at #49, “Medicine” by James Arthur at #54, “Bluuwuu” by Digga D at #57, “34+35” by Ariana Grande at #58, “Dance Monkey” by Tones and I at #60, “Toxic” by Digga D at #61, “Good Days” by SZA at #64, “Whoopty” by CJ at #65, “Prisoner” by Miley Cyrus featuring Dua Lipa at #66, “Afterglow” by Ed Sheeran at #68, “Regardless” by RAYE and Rudimental at #69, “you broke me first” by Tate McRae at #71 and finally, “Lemonade” by Internet Money and Gunna featuring Don Toliver and NAV at #75. I hope that next week is the last time I need to say “Lemonade” by Internet Money and Gunna featuring Don Toliver and NAV, not because the song is bad but that is a convoluted credit if I’ve ever seen one. In terms of gains and returning entries, it does get interesting. The only return is for “Watermelon Sugar” by Harry Styles at #67, but our gains include “Didn’t Know” by Tom Zanetti at #56, “Heartbreak Anniversary” by Given at #42 thanks to the video, “Ferrari Horses” by D-Block Europe featuring RAYE at #36 off of the debut, “We’re Good” by Dua Lipa at #32, “All You Ever Wanted” by Rag’n’Bone Man at #29, “Astronaut in the Ocean” by Masked Wolf at #24, “Let’s Go Home Together” by Ella Henderson and Tom Grennan at #21, “Little Bit of Love” also by Grennan at #13, “Streets” by Doja Cat at #12 thanks to the video and three songs making their first entry into the top 10 after picking up the pace on the charts recently: “Commitment Issues” by Central Cee at #9 thanks to his album, “BED” by Joel Corry, RAYE and David Guetta at #8 and finally, to my dismay, “Latest Trends” by A1 x J1 at #2 thanks to a remix featuring Aitch. Sigh, okay, well, we have a... curious selection of new arrivals so let’s start with that.
NEW ARRIVALS
#73 – “You’ve Done Enough” – Gorgon City and DRAMA
Produced by Gorgon City and DRAMA
Gorgon City are a British EDM duo who were particularly big back in 2014 or so when they had their top 10 hits, particularly “Ready for Your Love”, which peaked at #4, but they haven’t really had much success since in the UK or Europe in general. This time, however, they’ve clinched a spot in the top 75 by collaborating with DRAMA, another electronic duo except they’re from Chicago instead of north London and the vocalist here, Via Rosa, is actually from DRAMA and not some uncredited session vocalist or a sample, which surprised me because the vocals here are genuinely great and remind me a lot of these booming diva voices used so commonly in 90s house. In fact, I think this whole song is genuinely great, relying on a house groove that is pretty damn funky and some subtle keys making the foundation for a bouncy four-on-the-floor beat, with the shaky percussion just adding the spice on top of it. It helps that this chorus is pretty ethereal, with Rosa’s vocals booming over this angelic synth blend before a pretty ugly-sounding drop but that is absolutely on purpose, as the content here is about that struggle between trying to find someone and trying to better yourself so you feel like you’d be worthwhile to anyone you end up meeting, which is kind of a depressing cycle in many ways... not that I’ve experienced that, but it sounds like it warrants the DRAMA here. There are tons of intricacies in the productions here too that make the song a lot more complete, particularly in the vocal production and all the intrusive bass wobbles by the second chorus and drop, so, yeah, for once, the generic house tune debuting low on the chart is a pretty great one. I wish it went somewhere further so it sounded like an actual song but as is, without a real bridge, this is still a good, almost anthemic dance track.
#70 – “Rasputin” – Majestic and Boney M.
Produced by Majestic and Frank Farian
Boney M. are a pretty legendary disco group collected by producer Frank Farian of several Caribbean singers to make some of the most fun pop music of the 70s. One of the most interesting things about this band were the fact that they were immensely popular in the Soviet Union back when that existed, and some Soviet films even show their songs playing during high-ranking Soviet government meetings, which sounds like pure comedy. Funnily enough, “Rasputin” was the only song Boney M. were forbidden to play in the USSR, even though it was still a big hit there. The 1978 song, a #2 hit for the band in the UK, basically retells the story that led to infamous and fascinating Tsarist Russian mystic Grigori Rasputin being assassinated, with most claims in the song itself being true or at least as far as we know, although the song does mostly focus on how much of a womaniser he was. The original hit is equally fascinating as the guy himself, with a great typical disco sound, those iconic strings and the use of Russian instrument balalaikas in its mix just furthering that intrigue. Now, in 2021, the song became a hit on TikTok because... of course, and now this remix by a DJ and producer called Majestic, is charting on the UK Singles Chart. Why this remix and not the original song? Well, this is basically a French house remix of the song, using those house patterns not too dissimilar to Daft Punk or Stardust-type stuff, which makes perfect sense to remix a classic disco tune. I do prefer the original track about “Russia’s greatest love machine”, because it’s a lot more natural and the remix is kind of poorly done in some places if I’m being honest, but if this is how kids decide to experience this type of classic disco, I’m not going to complain. It’s a good song; I’m interested to see how this second chart run goes.
#53 – “DAYWALKER!” – Machine Gun Kelly featuring CORPSE
Produced by BaseXX, Machine Gun Kelly and SlimXX
Nope. No, no, no. I refuse. I’m completely fine with bringing pop-punk and post-hardcore stuff back, but if the ringleader is Machine Gun Kelly and he’s bringing out Corpse Husband to help him on this trap-metal garbage, I’m not even going to acknowledge it further than the fact that it exists and it’s probably not in MGK’s best interests to compare himself to Capitol Hill rioters. Otherwise, absolutely not. Nope. Not even going to give this the time of day.
#46 – “Addicted” – Jorja Smith
Produced by Compass
In stark contrast, here we have Jorja Smith’s new single to add to that confusing sophomore album roll-out that I feel has been delaying itself for two years now. This new song is about giving your all to a relationship and not having it reciprocated, but she paints this in a very odd way, painting herself as “too selfless” to leave and that her partner should be “addicted” to her, which seems like the wrong way to go about writing this entirely, especially if this instrumental is going to be the dullest blend of checked-out live percussion and a boring electric guitar loop, and Jorja Smith’s not going to sell this in a different way to how she sells her other songs, going for a subtle croon that just doesn’t make sense for a song where we’re clearly not supposed to think Jorja’s in the right for being this obsessive and somewhat hyperbolic about this relationship not going the way she planned. I could see this being done really well but the song is too weak and flimsy as is to grasp how to handle the content and I’m sorry but it just does not work for me.
#44 – “Day in the Life” – Central Cee
Produced by Frosty Beats
Central Cee released his debut mixtape, Wild West and, listen, there was a point to me not saying much about “DAYWALKER!” so I think Central Cee existing and giving me so little to work with will weaken that point even further. To be fair, I like the choir sample in this beat, even if the drop is going to be really awkwardly staggered by a loose 808 for no reason, and this drill beat never really feels like it keeps up with itself, especially because Central Cee might be the least interesting rapper in a crop of already desperate British rappers. He also says that rappers that use Auto-Tune don’t “really rap” or “really trap”, which is awkward considering some of this guy’s back catalogue, and also incredibly untrue. He also disses D-Block Europe pretty directly which, regardless of who it’s from or how famous DBE continue to get, always feels like punting down, so, yeah, this is worthless.
#43 – “On the Ground” – ROSÉ
Produced by 24, Jon Bellion, Ojivolta and Jordgen Odegard
This is the debut solo single from ROSÉ, one of the singers from K-pop group BLACKPINK, which explains my initial confusion to why this was so high. The label has enlisted Jon Bellion of all people to produce as they intend to push ROSÉ as a global hit-maker in her own right, given that this is part of a two-track EP so that if one track doesn’t do as well, fans could gravitate to another and that becomes the hit. See “Havana” or, really, how Drake releases his singles nowadays. Looking at some of her television appearances and the language surrounding that, it seems like they’ve been trying to push her as a soloist for a while, and given that she broke PSY’s record for most-viewed solo South Korean video in 24 hours with this song, I think it’s a success. Is the song itself any good? Well, to my surprise, it’s all in English. It now sits at 100 million views and really, there’s no way to distinguish that this is from Korea... which isn’t a bad thing, necessarily, because the song is great, relying on this slick electric guitar pluck and ROSÉ’s vocals which, despite being drenched in reverb, sound really great, before the whole song is abruptly plunged into this distorted, bassy electro-pop void which is just a fascinating and kind of avant-garde choice for a pop song like this. The song doesn’t really develop further than that, pretty much repeating its own structure, but that drop with all the spliced-in backing vocals, is such an interesting catharsis itself that I think it makes up for that. The final drop does a lot different as well, going for a lead synth melody on the top of the mix that again sounds really great when paired with that mix and then the rising strings. I was tempted to write this song’s quirks off as shoddy K-pop songwriting but given the credits, especially Jon Bellion, I’m confident all of this nonsense is absolutely on purpose, and I love it. Check it out, I hope this becomes a hit outside of this debut week, although I really don’t think that’ll happen given it’s (ostensibly) a K-pop song and their western success is largely dominant on sales from fans. Regardless, I’m glad it debuted here in the first place as I wouldn’t have heard it otherwise.
#16 – “6 for 6” – Central Cee
Produced by Okami202, Sevon and Young Chencs
This is Cee’s sixth song to hit the chart, and hence he’s going “six for six”, even though only two of those singles were actually poised to stick around in any shape or form. He does seem to be going somewhere with this, particularly the direction I thought “Loading” would be going, as it uses a choir sample as the background to this janky UK drill beat... but it’s soon drowned-out and Cee himself is such a non-presence that it’s not worth paying attention to the guy’s content, let alone his lyrics which seem to try and be somewhat introspective about his drug-dealing and gang violence, but end up being incredibly shallow and not really saying anything, about as shallow as this instrumental. The outro would be a pretty nice piano interlude if it didn’t stop so abruptly and I’ve only got to hope that leads into a track on the album and isn’t just a mistake, because I’m not listening to that mixtape if my life depended on it. Another snooze from Central Cee, what a surprise.
#3 – “Patience” – KSI featuring YUNGBLUD and Polo G
Produced by Matt Schwartz
Remember when I said we had three songs making their first entry into the top 10? Yeah, turns out that I’m a compulsive liar since we actually have a fourth at #3, and I’m tempted to nope my way out of this one as well. What’s with this week and whiny, wannabe pop-punk singers collaborating with obnoxious YouTubers? I feel like I’m too old to cover this stuff every other week, and that’s saying something considering KSI himself is pushing 30 at this point, but regardless, I have to check out the song and to my surprise, it’s actually kind of decent. It goes for an 80s synth-rock vibe, with massive guitar tones and obviously not live drums that kind of undercut the pretty great bass groove here, but man, Polo G sounds surprisingly good on this production. His verse is pretty infectious, even if it ends up crushed at the end by YUNGBLUD’s hook, which sounds the least insufferable this guy has ever been, probably because of how the vocal production keeps him slightly in check. KSI himself might be the weakest link as he cannot sing at all, and the Auto-Tune in his verse is not helping, but I do like his David Bowie-interpolating ad-libs on the choruses (Yes, seriously). The bridge is a pathetic excuse of a bridge and the song’s mostly chorus – I’m kind of worried about KSI as a hit-maker going forward if he’s going to consistently contribute so little to his own singles, most of which have two other people on. I mean, it works as a short, inoffensive pop-rock song and not much else. I really wish this was Polo G’s song, actually, I think he deserves a second verse here.
Conclusion
Well, that week happened, that’s for sure. I’m going to give Best of the Week to the obvious outlier here, “On the Ground” by ROSÉ, but not without an Honourable Mention to Gorgon City and DRAMA for “You’ve Done Enough”. Worst of the Week is also going to the obvious outlier, “DAYWALKER!” by Machine Gun Kelly featuring Corpse Husband. Can I give a song I literally refused to review Worst of the Week? Yes, yes, I can. For Dishonourable Mention, just pick your Central Cee-flavoured poison. Here’s this week’s top 10:
Tumblr media
I’ll see you next week for... Justin Bieber and Lana Del Rey. Damn, maybe I won’t see you next week.
