let go when you give it - chapter one
Serena and Abbie fail to have a one-night stand. (A (smuttier) re-telling of from the dark with you above me )
I've wanted to revisit this fic for a little while and have finally had inspiration for it. I'm looking forward to writing this. This story will be more explicit than the original.
ao3. 1.5k words.
Abbie was surprised at how mild her hangover was, at least for now. Maybe it would catch up to her in a few hours. She would do her absolute best to fend it off, she had things she wanted to do today. Go to the farmers market, and then the grocery store for what she couldn’t find. She wanted to go running at the reservoir. The weather was gorgeous, even this early, she had seen the sunrise lying in bed next to Serena, working up the energy to rise. She wasn’t going to stay for breakfast. That wasn’t her style, yes, but Serena was likely to be an absolute mess based on the vodka sodas she was downing the night before. So, she was drinking a glass of water in the kitchen and taking an Advil from her purse quickly before leaving. She heard a door click open and footsteps. Damn. So much for slipping out quietly. The footsteps went into the bathroom and she heard a faint rummaging. She readied herself for what she would make a quick conversation.
The person who emerged from the hallway was not, in fact, Serena. Abbie was surprised to see Alex Cabot, dressed in a perfectly buttoned satin pajama set, with a wrinkled forehead, rubbing her temples. Though they had seen each other briefly last night, she and Serena had left Penelope’s before Alex did, and she had not heard someone else come in. Plenty of ADA’s lived with roommates, but Abbie knew neither of them needed to. Alex jumped.
“Why are you in my kitchen?” Alex asked after they acknowledged one another. Couldn’t she guess? Though, Abbie realized, she should give the obviously-ill woman some slack. She cleared her throat.
“Serena, uh, let me stay over. I didn’t know she had roommates.” Alex was clearly too tired to moderate her reactions, because the shock registered on her face, like the thought that Abbie had sex with Serena was unthinkable. Oh please. It wasn’t like she made a great effort to conceal her sexuality, she just didn’t explicitly say it. Alex was subtle, but out: she kept small enamel rainbow flag on her desk, and Abbie had heard her discussing attending an LGBT event with the Bar association. Serena was similar. At any rate, Abbie thought, surely Alex would’ve remembered seeing her at Penelope’s-- which should leave no ambiguity. Manhattan’s premier lesbian bar really didn’t attract straight clientele. Even if it did, was Alex’s gaydar that bad?
Alex laughed in her face. Abbie almost couldn’t believe how impolite she was being. Surely her upper-class upbringing would’ve included etiquette training. Alex tried to hide her smile, which only made it worse.
“Sorry,” she said. “I just wouldn’t think Penelope’s would be your scene.” Abbie wasn’t sure what to say to that.
“Yeah, well,” she said, and gestured with her free hand, “I’m here, so.” Abbie resisted elaborating. She couldn’t get out of that apartment fast enough. Alex said something about kissing Serena goodbye, and the thought made her shudder.
“Not really my style,” she said, placing her glass in the sink and raising her keys in the air. “See you, Alex.” ---
Sunday dinner found her at Elle and Lisa’s more often than it didn’t. She’d checked off everything on the list: running, followed by the farmer’s market, then the grocery store, and after that she had gotten a pain au chocolat and a latte and prepared a few things for the work week. She called her mother and got an earful of Where is my son-in-law Abbie? Come on, both your younger sisters are married, what are you waiting for? Are there no eligible bachelors in New York City? Why are you still living there anyway, Dallas is cheaper and warmer and your whole family is there. And you could help Dad campaign. I mean, your father and I aren’t getting any younger, Abigail! And what about my grandchildren?.
She hung up as fast as she could after the Are you still going to church? question, and, by then, the sun was going down. September always brought Abbie a touch of sadness, the crisp that the air was beginning to hold made her melancholy. Maybe it was nostalgia, or the way people began preparing to hibernate for the cold that she still hadn’t quite completely adapted to. The leaves were starting to change, though, she noticed on her walk to her friends’ place, and that was nice.
“So, you hooked up with a coworker?” said Elle, mildly scandalized. “That’s not very much like you!” Lisa poured herself a second glass of white wine and topped off Abbie’s. Elle was right.
“I know,” said Abbie, pondering her reasons. “I like her,” she said, “we don’t work in the same bureau, so I don’t actually see her all that much at work.”
“I see,” said Lisa. “That’s nice then! Do you think there’ll be a repeat?” She said.
“Probably not,” said Abbie. “Never say never, I guess. But, I’m not looking for attachment.” Elle rolled her eyes. Abbie gave her an annoyed look. “Besides, you know how much I work, I don’t have time and neither does she.” Lisa nodded, acknowledging the truth. Elle pulled the roasted asparagus and crispy tofu out of the oven.
---
Abbie saw Alex and Serena across the street from the office, ducking their heads under the awning of a food truck, escaping the not-light rain for a moment. None of them were in the same bureau, so Abbie guessed she shouldn’t be surprised that she didn’t know they lived together. Working with Alex had made her notice just how close they were. Look, Alex, I hope I can count on your discretion. It hadn’t been Abbie at her most eloquent. She shouldn’t have had to clarify, and honestly, she knew Alex probably wouldn’t spread rumors about her. It really was more a way to get the conversation about anything other than work to stop.
Serena tilted her head up, laughing. Alex covered her mouth with her hand. Abbie wondered what they were talking about. She didn’t have a long time to think, though, because Jack joined her on the steps, a newspaper atop his head.
“How was your weekend, Abbie?” Said Jack, slightly out of breath. He opened the door for her and held it. Abbie shook off the droplets that had made it on to her suit and Jack rolled up the newspaper.
“It was good,” said Abbie. “Yours?”
“You seem to be in high spirits,” said Jack. “Get up to anything fun?”
“I guess so,” said Abbie, “yeah, I had a good weekend.” Jack didn’t pry anymore.
---
Abbie got home late, but not too late, not uncharacteristically late. She was very glad not to live with roommates. She left that life behind after law school, even though it was hard on her first salary. She valued solitude over cable, for example. She listened to a Liz Phair CD while she cooked, letting the sounds of the two mix. After she ate, she read for a while, then finished up some work she brought home. Her sister called, apparently her twin niece and nephew were starting second grade the next day. She folded some laundry with the news playing, did the dishes, and went to sleep.
Her mind wandered. She had been thinking of Serena off and on. She hadn’t had sex in a while before that Friday. As a rule, the longer she went without, the less she wanted it, and Abbie knew that the opposite was true. She was mildly regretting having not left her phone number. Not that Serena couldn’t contact her-- she knew where her office was, after all-- but leaving her phone number (or even saying goodbye) may have gotten her a repeat. Yes, she had told Lisa and Elle she wouldn’t, but the more she mulled it over, the less sure she was about that.
She let her hands follow her mind, breathing in the cool breeze coming in through the cracked window. She was starting to feel the autumn in it. When she touched her cunt, gently, her two fingers were cold amid the soft wetness. She shifted, sleepy, as she circled her clit. Her eyes closed, and she pictured Serena. First, her at Penelope’s. Serena was a slightly awkward but enthusiastic dancer, she had the gangliness of a significantly taller woman. Abbie found it endearing. Her lack of rhythm hadn’t stopped her body from arousing Abbie, and she had been glad to follow her into the cab back to her apartment.
Then, an image of Serena on her back underneath her. Abbie could almost hear her moan. She felt herself getting close as she pictured Serena coming, the particular way her pink mouth wrapped around her gasps.
Finally, she found herself imagining Serena in the cocktail dress she had worn to the office Christmas party last year, Serena’s first. It was dark green, velvet, and long; and she remembered the way it moved on her. She was just remembering it now. It was pleasant. She could stand to see something like it again. Abbie sighed as she came, then yawned.

if uh, anyone wants any scene-by-scene screencaps of any of these characters, let me know - otherwise these files will just live on my hard-drive gaining dust.
(*s2 episodes 5-8 of the gilded age screencaps ended up corrupted themselves, so i'll need to rewatch those episodes if anyone wants to wait for those to be done.)

with me tonight
T/K drabble. Ao3
“Kelly?” The voice came from behind her, unmistakable. She jumped.
Kelly made her excuses to the woman in front of her. “Tracey.”
“Fancy seeing you here.” The awkwardness hung in the air.
“I didn’t know you were,”
“Likewise,” Tracey said.
“Are you having luck?” Kelly hated these events, but she had been too single for too long.
“Not so much,” said Tracey, tilting her glass back and winking at Kelly. A warm feeling came over her. “I do wonder if that will change.”
Kelly couldn’t deny, she had thought about it before.
“I can see how it might,” said Kelly.

from the dark with you above me chapter 3
“Yeah,” she said. “I think it’ll be a great weekend.” ao3
“Tracey, just who I wanted to see” Jack said, approaching Tracey and Serena who were sitting in a booth by the window with salads and coffee. Abbie and Jack had similar plans for after they delivered their news, though they were both more sandwich people. Serena looked a little pink for half a second and coughed into her napkin. Abbie had the advantage of being prepared.
“Serena,” Jack acknowledged the other attorney’s presence.
“To what do we owe the pleasure?” Tracey asked, not bothering to conceal her annoyance at her meal being interrupted.
“Can’t I just be happy to see you?” Jack said with his characteristic smile.
“You could’ve expressed that joy this morning,” Tracey said returning his smile.
“My mistake,” Jack said. “No, I wanted to warn you,” he said, “Arthur is going to push for a plea on your Cortez case. Apparently there is pressure for a resolution from the mayor. Just thought you should be prepared.” Tracey nodded. Serena drummed her fingers against the table and sighed.
“Interesting,” Tracey said.
Abbie watched Serena as she lifted her latte and took a sip, as she licked the foam off of her lips. She was having trouble convincing herself last Friday had been a mistake. She enjoyed herself, but she couldn’t afford to get herself into a complicated situation like this one. She had a couple, very fun, lapses in judgment.
“It is,” Jack said.
“Well, I’ll talk to him,” Tracey said. “Thanks, Jack.”
“No problem,” he said. “Enjoy your lunch.”
Jack and Abbie ordered quickly, and when their sandwiches arrived, Jack asked a question Abbie was hoping to avoid.
“How was your weekend?”
Abbie tensed. “It was fine,” she said.
“Just fine?” Jack pried.
“Uneventful,” Abbie said, knowing he could pick up on her tone. He looked at her expectantly and she gave him more information. “I went out with some friends.” Jack seemed pleasantly surprised. “How was yours?” she asked.
“I didn’t do much. I read a novel.”
“Nice,” she said. “So about this motion.” --- Jack and Charlie were letting Abbie and Alex do most of the work for this case, even inside the courtroom. Tuesday saw them in the office late, buried in paperwork, poking at cold butter chicken.
“I’m starting to lose some hope,” Alex said.
“I’m not,” Abbie said, only half believing herself.
“I don’t believe you.”
“I’m being genuine.” Abbie turned a page and took a bite. The silence between the two of them had hardly settled in when Alex spoke again.
“Do you really think we shouldn’t cut a deal?” She asked. Abbie did not want to take a deal of any kind. On the other hand, Nash was a killer who had slipped through the DA’s fingers once before, and without the murder weapon, their evidence was thin. They could place him near the crime scene-- along with a hundred other people. He had been more careful this time and there had not been any bloody clothes in his closet. Nobody saw him drag the victim into the bathroom, nobody heard her scream. He wore a condom. It was as though a ghost had committed the crime. He even seemed to select his target arbitrarily, without a concrete motive they could present to the jury. If that wasn’t enough, thanks to a hearing that had not gone their way, they weren’t even able to mention the case Jack hadn’t been able to get a conviction on. His lawyer had suggested a deal a few days before, and once the weapon was definitely out of the picture, Jack and Charlie were amenable to the idea. As much as they wanted to win this at trial, they wanted Nash in prison. Abbie was the final holdout. She sighed.
“I certainly don’t want to.”
“But do you really think we can get a conviction? I mean, we’ve had four detectives going through this case with a fine tooth comb for weeks.”
Abbie waited a minute, thinking over what she could say next, but Alex beat her to it.
“Serena thinks it’s remarkable that Pierce would even suggest man one.”
The mention of Serena took her off guard.
“Serena has an opinion on our case?” She said, cold and annoyed. Serena had no standing. Alex exhaled a laugh.
“Serena has an opinion on everything.”
“I just don’t see why you would feel the need to consult with anybody but those of us who are actually on the case.” Alex smiled at her.
“Serena and I talk about everything. I trust her judgment and she trusts mine.”
“Well, I don’t know her well enough to agree,” she said. “The only perspectives that should matter are those of the attorneys and detectives on the case.”
“Right,” Alex said. “And everyone but you is on the same page.” Abbie couldn’t argue with that. She knew she would eventually be outvoted if this went on much longer.
“Look,” Abbie said. “Would you ask the detectives to canvass the gala guests one more time? Maybe someone has spontaneously remembered something.” It was a long shot, but she thought it could be worth it.
“Why can’t you do it?” Alex asked.
“Start with Benson, she can break the news. I’m sure she’ll be receptive” Abbie said. She had picked up on whatever was going on between Alex and the detective, they were not subtle. Alex considered it.
“I imagine she would be as receptive if you did the asking.”
“Sure,” Abbie said. They looked at each other, waiting for the other person to blink.
“Fine,” Alex said. “I’ll call her in the morning.”
“Thank you,” Abbie said.
---
Abbie collided with someone in the front doorway at One Hogan Place. Hot coffee splashed onto her from the opening of the plastic lid. Papers went flying from the other person’s arms.
“Sorry, sorry,” they said.
“Hi, Serena,” Abbie said, amused. Serena was hastily gathering what she had dropped. She looked up. Her face was faintly pink.
“Hi,” Serena said, out of breath, as she stood up, messy stack of papers in tow. “I was just headed to the courthouse.”
“Naturally,” Abbie said. She looked down at her sweater to assess the extent of the spill, cursing herself for wearing white today. Serena did not reply. “Well, it’s nice to see you,” Abbie said.
“You too,” Serena said. “I should,”
“Me too,” Abbie said, stepping back to let Serena out of the door.
As she walked upstairs, Abbie couldn’t help but think about how endearing Serena could be.
---
“Come in,” Abbie said in response to the knock at her door.
“Good news and bad news,” Olivia said.
“Oh great,” Abbie said, putting aside her pen.
“Good news is that we have a witness. The bad news is he’s the victim’s ex boyfriend who has multiple domestic violence complaints.” Abbie brought her hand to her temple. Of course it couldn’t be simple.
“I imagine that’s why he wasn’t forthcoming earlier.”
“Yep,” Olivia said. “I mean, can we still use him?”
“How credible is his account?”
“Very. He was following her around the ballroom and therefore he saw Nash pull her into the bathroom and heard him say ‘shut the fuck up bitch’ before it went silent. Then he, quote, ‘had another canapĂ©.’”
“Jesus,” Abbie said. “Then yes, we should still be able to use him.”
“Can you try and exclude any mention of the domestic incidents?”
“Unfortunately not,” Abbie said. “And I have to tell the defense about them.” Olivia’s face fell. “I know. Ultimately it’s Jack and Charlie’s call whether or not to put him on the stand.”
“You can’t let him get away with this again,” Olivia said.
“I know,” Abbie said. “We’re doing everything within our power. Have you told everyone else?”
“No,” Olivia said. “Since you ordered the re-canvass, I thought I’d tell you first.”
“Thanks, detective Benson,” Abbie said, appreciative.
“Olivia,” she said. “No problem.” She was charming. Abbie saw what Alex saw in her. “I’m going to go tell everyone else.”
“Jack stepped out for some food but he’ll be back soon. Alex and Charlie are in his office.”
“Thanks,” Olivia said. Abbie picked up a slight disappointment in her voice.
--- “Shouldn’t you go home? It’s a Friday night,” Jack said, poking his head into her office. “It’s late.”
“I know you, of all people, are suggesting I neglect important work in favor of sleep.”
“On the contrary, Abbie, I of all people know how important sleep is.” A noise behind him made Jack turn around. “Serena,” he said. “I was just telling Miss Carmichael here to follow your example.”
Serena walked up next to him. She had on a nice black fall jacket and carried a brown briefcase. She looked tired, her hair was slightly disheveled. She smiled at Abbie and Abbie smiled back wider. She liked Serena’s smile. She was very expressive, which Abbie found both confusing and endearing.
“Actually, Tracey just kicked me out. Sorry to disappoint, Jack,” she said.
“And I am following her lead,” Jack said. “Let’s call you two a cab.”
“You can’t make me leave,” Abbie said, stubborn.
“Can’t I?” Jack said. As much as she hated to admit it, Abbie was ready to leave. She acquiesced, gathering her things. They were able to catch a cab quickly after they determined they were going in the same direction.
“Goodnight, ladies,” Jack said, opening the door for them.
“Ladies,” Serena repeated.
“Right,” Abbie said.
An awkward silence fell over the car. Serena broke it.
“Alex told me, about the witness,” she said.
“Alex tells you everything, it seems.”
“We always have.” Abbie considered what everything included here.
Serena hadn’t left her mind this week. She was thinking about her significantly more than she would an ordinary hook-up. Serena was attractive, interesting, and great in bed. That thought was at the front of her mind, it hung in the air between them. Only a foot separated them, and it made her think about touching her. She knew it was a bad idea. She didn’t find herself caring.
Serena touched her first. She reached over and tucked a strand of hair out of her face and let her hand trace down to her shoulder.
“So,” she said. “Was it a good week?”
Abbie cleared her throat.
“I’ve had worse,” she said.
“I’m just glad it’s Friday. I hope my weekend is relaxing.”
“I have a feeling it will be,” Abbie replied, her voice low.
They reached Abbie’s place first. Serena gave her a pointed look that asked a question without words.
Abbie got out of the cab and opened Serena’s door. She took her hand and helped her out like a gentleman.
“Yeah,” she said. “I think it’ll be a great weekend.”

top five shows :) (tv or theatre or anything, doesn't matter)
currently my favourite theatre shows are:
— fun home
— company
— chicago
— cabaret
— ragtime
(these are just musicals but i figured plays have their own separate category because overall i am ... bad at picking my top five. also in no particular order... for plays the most quickfire list in the world: es & flo @ the kiln, medea @ soho place, phaedra @ the national theatre + a combination of the crucible and hamlet 4 the shakespeare rep...)
and as for tv ... i don't watch tv that often tbh. in no particular order again:
— frasier (not cheers let me be clear. haven't watched that show yet)
— bojack horseman
— madam secretary (this answer is super ironic because a) hate the writing but b) the actors are brilliant and i personally love the characters)
— a mix of yellowjackets + the bear. the former because #cannibalism but also because it appeals to the human in me. (not s2 tho)
— law & order: trial by jury (i'm extremely biased because ms. tracey kibre has like max five fans and i'm one of them)

Congrats on the 100! 🎉
How about a 500 word ficlet, Tracey/Kelly, fake dating “I’m easy. Buy me a nice ring and I’ll lie to your parents.”?
thank you, friend!! this was SO fun to write, I loved it, though I may have taken a couple liberties with the prompt... 500 words of tracey/kelly fluff for you! (posted on ao3, titled: a trick, a ring, disbelief, and a kiss) (here is the link to guidelines for this little celebration!)
One thing Tracey doesn't always like about being bureau chief, lo these many years into the job, is wrangling the baby ADAs. Not their work: really, she is continually surprised by how they seem to come out of law school and clerkships smarter every year, and she actually owes a key break in the case she's writing her opening for to Henry. It's their behavior that bothers her sometimes, when there's important things to be done. The bickering, the need to out-smart one another-- they're good skills to have. God knows how many times Tracey's fine-tuned her arguments by antagonistically bouncing them off of another lawyer. Still, it would be easier to focus if there weren't voices from down the hall growing faster and louder by the minute.
"Cameron, will you shut up?" is the first exclamation she hears clearly, in Georgia's voice. She sounds like she's joking. Kelly, sitting across from her, having escaped her own bureau and juniors for the evening, exhales an amused laugh. Tracey clicks her tongue, knowing how pointless it would be to intervene. She loves the days when one of them is able to join the other before they leave. Of course, she also loves going home to her wife, and she loves being home when Kelly gets there. She loves everything about her.
"You know," Kelly says, resting her pen against the top of her book, smirking towards Tracey, "Mine don't act like that."
Tracey scoffs, underlining a quote she wants to use. "I'm sure they do, when you're not around. They're scared of you."
"Right, because I have a reputation for being a hard-ass."
"They're scared to disappoint you. At least mine know the worst they can do is make me angry."
"Uh-huh."
Another burst of sound comes from down the hall, unmistakably laughter. Cameron's voice carries loudest: "Gigi, all I'm saying is, I’m easy. Buy me a nice ring and I’ll lie to your parents!"
Kelly grins and laughs. It always makes Tracey's pulse flutter. "Sounds like they're getting off-task in there, Kibre."
Tracey smiles, wide and delighted. "I'll let them have their fun."
"Softie," Kelly says. Tracey bites her tongue and shrugs, and they both pick up their pens again.
---
"I hate you," Georgia says to Cameron, far ahead enough not to notice their boss.
"Come on,"
"I'm not buying you a ring,"
"But I can be your fake fiancé?"
"Only because my mother will freak out."
"Deal." Their voices grow quieter, and their steps further away.
"How long, do you think, until they're really together?" Kelly says.
"Two months, tops," Tracey replies in a whisper, squeezing her hand.
"People never believe me, you know, when I tell them how sweet you are."
"Only for you, my love," Tracey says, opening the final doors, the chilly air hits their faces. A leaf falls immediately into Kelly's blonde waves as soon as they step outside. Tracey picks it out with gentle hands, and kisses her, quickly, so familiar. "Always for you."

do i need to start paying people to watch trial by jury? because i will genuinely do so— it has a very very beautiful ms bebe neuwirth in 2005 and an uncanonical, lawyer lesbian couple of which i am head over heels for.
you also have this shot which is, imo, great. the way tracey turns is literally hilarious.
