IM GONNA do this in parts bcus it's late and I have. so many thoughts on this show, but UHH Michael Bluth Gay HC specific rant below :)

OKAY OKAY hear me out. Michael was absolutely the parentified child, I highly doubt anything associated with affection/relationships/etc was actively explained to him, and when he was supposed to be learning that stuff, he was in too deep to actually think about that stuff. In canon, he actively ambushes his own relationships with women, and rushes into relationships without forethought, like his brother. The difference is that Michael looks for things to go wrong, and uses excuses to end any relationship just starting. He canonically married Tracey only after getting her pregnant with GM, and he wasn't with her for long before getting married. ("I know you got married in sophomore year of college, but you had your whole freshman year. I mean there must've been girls at parties" George Michael in s1e11. "I'll just put the law school on pause, last time I did that you were born" Michael in s4e1. and I'm pretty sure Gob makes an offhand comment about Michael 'knocking her up' about Tracy in s2). Adding onto that, Michael pushes himself to meet his parents expectations, and we see from s1e1 that Lucille is pretty homophobic (I have thoughts on that too dw), so with that, and the external pressure to live up to expectations, it's possible Michael didn't let himself think that was an option.

i write absolute bangers all the time tbh. they may not be the most polished, they could almost always certainly be better with some extra tlc, and my update schedule is appalling ever since i graduated college, but my ideas are creative and generally well-executed, even if (if not especially when) i'm playing in tropes common to the fandom. i may have anxiety and a lot of chronic self doubt, but i'm good at what i do imo.

🥺 Is there a certain type of moment or common interaction between your characters that never fails to put you in your feels?

any sort of casual devotion. "of course i'm going to do [dangerous/comforting/necessary/frivolous/domestic/extraordinary/world-breaking] thing because it's For You." i love writing that shit. i love reading that shit. i just pepper it in anytime i feel the spirit move me. it's the main ingredient, babey!!

ACTUALLY U KNO WHAT, he has a tattoo from a 3-day rebellious streak when he was like 19. i do not know what it's a tattoo of (it's probably not anything original, but i don't think it's something like tracey's name), i do not know where it's located (somewhere out of sight, out of mind), but gob doesn't find out until they're in their 30s/40s and he acts like michael stabbed him in the BACK. michael is secretly smug about it just bc it pisses gob the hell off even tho he placates him like it's not a big deal, it's nothing, he was a stupid kid, you're the one making something out of nothing.

I was writing a fic set in 1988(Gob is 22) where Lindsay catches Gob kissing another guy(his name is Eric) and Gob is being all defiant and won’t admit to Lindsay that he’s gay and that he kissed him. So, she decides to try and make him feel that she is a safe person to come out to through a multitude of gestures of increasing grandeur that Gob does not appreciate.

Blah, blah, blah, she eventually comes to understand that pressuring him into it isn’t good and that a basis of trust built up over time is what’s needed and, once that’s formed, he comes out to her, blah, blah, blah.

But, the thing is, I decided to take the whole thing in, like, a totally different direction. The only thing I really keep is Lindsay catching Gob kissing a guy and Gob coming out at the end so the majority of the story is just being scrapped now. I was sad to just lose the stuff forever, though, so I decided to compile some parts I liked.

For context, the stuff that mentions signs are from when she goes to a protest against the Bluth Company for firing people for their sexuality.

Okay, so Michael used his son’s loss of a mother to avoid dating at first and then seems to self-sabotage every relationship even after George Michael says he’s okay with him dating, including eventually Sally Sitwell, the woman he was the most into of all of his relationships in s1-3. While part of the Sally thing is most definitely from him wanting to be a martyr wrt Maggie’s pregnancy, I do think it’s a pretty powerful thing that he’s obviously not over Tracey at all. Hell, even when he meets Rebel, one of his first comments is “my dead wife had red hair”. Tracey’s never an “ex”, never his “former wife”, she’s just always his “wife”.

Gob has disappeared yet again, this time, having run off after setting Tracey’s dress on fire at her and Michael’s wedding. Tracey finds this concerning but the rest of the family doesn’t seem to be on the same page. After some convincing, she gets Michael to help her look for his brother and her, now, brother-in-law and they’re taken all across Orange County in their search for the missing eldest son of the Bluth family. And, while that’s going down, Lindsay and Tobias decide to take it to the next step in their relationship, whatever that means, and Lucille deals with a pesky thief stealing what she holds most dear.
