Textless panel from Batman: Dark Patterns #1
If you like some of the more twisted and gritty Batman stories, you should definitely give Batman: Dark Patterns a shot. Written by Dan Watters and illustrated by Hayden Sherman, this 12-issue mini series will follow four cases from Bruce's early (pre-Robin) days as Batman.
I'm already hooked from the first issue. The second releases today and I am so excited to read it. With Nightwing and Detective Comics-- and now this-- Watters is a DC writer I'll absolutely be following closely.

Mystery-Focused Batman Comic Series Announced
Tumblr media
DC Comics has announced Batman: Dark Patterns, a 12-issue lo-fi, mystery-centric, limited comic book series following the World's Greatest Detective. Batman: Dark Patterns hails from writer Dan Watters, artist Hayden Sherman, colorists Tríona Farrell, and letterer Frank Cvetkovic.
Set during Batman's early years as a crime fighter, Batman: Dark Patterns is a series of four self-contained mysteries. Each mystery will be told over three issues. The first arc, "We Are Wounded," "involves a series of sickeningly gruesome murders sending shock waves through Gotham City. Are these the random works of a serial killer, or is there something more sinister at play?" (DC Comics)
Batman: Dark Patterns #1 (of 12) goes on sale on December 11, 2024. The debut issue sports a main cover by Hayden Sherman and a variant cover by Stevan Subic.

Because I was curious and we don't discuss this often, I went ahead and looked at the female artist situation for DC in November 2024.
Starting conditions: I am considering 'artist', 'penciller', and 'inker' together. I am not considering cover artists or colorists as they are largely not yet listed.
Skylar Patridge (Action Comics back up)
Fabiana Mascolo (Catwoman)
Mindy Lee (Harley Quinn)
Adriana Melo (Power Girl)
Yeah, it's worse. Hmm let me run through the full set for August 2024, as the November ones don't have full creative teams listed yet (still ignoring covers):
Sophie Campbell (Birds of Prey) (artist)
Emanuela Lupacchino (Shazam!) (artist)
Claire Roe (Absolute Power: Task Force VII #4) (artist)
Nicoletta Baldari (Primer: Clashing Colours) (artist)
Alitha Martinez (Absolute Power: Origins) (pencils)
Jordie Bellaire (Birds of Prey, Nice House by the Sea) (colorist)
Trish Mulvihill (Shazam!) (colorist)
Tríona Farrell (Gotham City Sirens) (colorist)
Valentina Taddeo (Outsiders) (colorist)
Tamra Bonvillain (Batman/Superman; World's Finest) (colorist)
Ariana Maher (Absolute Power, Superman, Detective Comics) (letterer)
Saida Temofonte (The Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries; Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?) (letterer)
So that's 5 artists, 5 colorists, and two letterers.
Interestingly the spread of the projects they've worked on is less ghettoed than writer, though only Ariana Maher has any of what I would consider headlining titles.
There is a level of correlation where a title that has a female writer might also have a female artist, but it's not hugely consistent, particularly when we get to colorist or letterer.

Here's the fist look at Scarlet Witch (2023) Annual #1, written by Steve Orlando, drawn by Carlos Nieto, and colored Tríona Farrell.
Wanda and Agatha, in her newly rejuvenated form, are shown chatting over tea at Wanda's shop, and later, sharing a pizza while walking down the street in civilian clothes. I love both of their outfits, and I appreciate that Wanda is still on-model, but it's apparent that Farrell, like Wilson, struggles with consistency when it comes to brown skin tones. Wanda's coloring shouldn't vary this much from page to page, especially not in the same setting/lighting.
Anyways, it looks like Agatha's social visit is going to lead into a drawn-out brawl across several time-periods and realities. The witches are shown sword-fighting in midair over a pirate ship-- in partial period costumes, no less-- before crash-landing into the Living Tribunal, a multiversal entity that exists outside of Earth-616.
As frustrated as I have been with Agatha's transformation, I'm still looking forward to this issue, and I'm hoping Orlando can convince me to love this new version of character.

Is it just me, or is the colouring in these books (well specifically the skin tones) really bad? Like, in some issues, Wanda looks really light with a more neutral undertone, but then in others she’ll be darker but straight up orange (same with Pietro in this issue, issue #9, he looks again, weirdly peachy & orange), and Darcy will sometimes look extremely pink?? And in the new issue, Eva Quintero also looks weirdly orange & Jericho has a lot less melanin than he normally does; is it just me and I've gone colourblind or something, or do you see it too?
You're not imagining it-- this is something I've written about before.
The unfortunate fact of the matter is that a lot of artists struggle with darker skin tones, and characters like Wanda, who are supposed to be a medium-brown, do tend to be really inconsistent. Matt Wilson, who colored the first half of the series, had a particularly bad habit of changing Wanda's local color in different lighting, which means that her actual skin tone would appear to fluctuate, rendering her extremely pale in dark- or cool-lit scenes and effusively tan in the sun.
Frank William is more consistent, but his coloring style is much more flat than Wilson's, and it does tend to be overly bright and saturated. He also uses a more yellow tone for Wanda, whereas Wilson favored red, which might be why she and Pietro look orange to you... but I'm reading a digital copy of #9 right now, and I think they look fine. Same goes for Tríona Farrell's work on the back-up-- she does favor heavy ambient colors, and I think the characters are a bit darker than we're used to, but they don't look cartoonish. The scenes just have dim, warm lighting.
Jericho is definitely a touch too light, and that's a problem, but I'm not surprised. With really dark skin tones, you typically need to use reflective light to create definition. Artists who work in a more flat, graphic style like Williams tend to struggle with this, and very dark skin tones can swallow up the black lineart. This is not, by any measure, an excuse, but I find that artists like Williams favor warmer, brighter tones for Black characters who really should be darker or cooler. (This is also part of why Black characters, particularly men, sometimes look too old in comics-- artists either struggle to add definition or they rely on heavy inking to create depth, and it causes the features to appear more deep-set and craggy)
