I really need to know more about your TI selkie AU!
oh I have not worked on this one for A While... I'm still very invested in selkie!Trelawney, but I think I need to maybe do a full rewrite of this one, since I've been thinking that the detective-y tone that I've got going at this point is really not working out. I think a round of relistening to some good selkie ballads is in order, perhaps...
“Trelawneys have been born and buried here this hundred years and more, doctor. And fine upright land-settled folk they’ve been all the while, save the last two.” The wind blew cold through the churchyard, and Livesey stifled a shiver. He drew the collar of his cloak closer about his throat, attempting to keep the warmth inside. “Whatever do you mean by that?” “Why, they’ve done as gentlemen are wont to do, of course, take stock of the farms and the forests and mind their workings, send their sons to war and daughters to marriage, have the vicar to supper of a Sunday. Now, the old squire, he went a-traveling instead, you see, and all the fisherfolk knew what would come of it when he returned with that fair pretty bride of his.” “Well, what did come of it? I cannot figure what you are at, man.” The sexton nodded, and gathered up his tools. “Ah, you’re a landsman and a soldier, and you’ve been to the city schools, have you not? I shouldn’t have thought the old stories had kept around for such as yourself. I’ll say it plainer then. Say your young man here, one who’s got a fire in his heart and luck on his side, sets out for sea with no destination in particular, and returns married already to a lady from nowhere at all. James Trelawney never married her in any church, not this one or any other, and never did we hear of whence she came nor who her people were, save that they met at sea. Now add to that her oddnesses, that she could tell when a storm was coming days before anyone else, that she had teeth sharp like a cat’s, that she spent all her time down at the shore chattering away to the seals like she was one of their own… if you’d been born by the sea, doctor, as I was, you’d know right well that the old squire married no mortal woman when he brought back his bride to Black Cove.” “That can’t be—“ “And the son, what do you make of him now, knowing that? You’re near enough to him to see. He’s got sharp teeth and selkiepaws, same as his mother had.” “Trelawney doesn’t—“ “Oh, but he does, doctor. A bit more webbing between his fingers than he ought? A little more of a fang to his smile than most men do? And I lay he’s got a bit of a flirtation for you, keeping to the shore as he has since you came to town.” Livesey’s hands clenched into fists before he realized he had moved them at all, fingernails digging into the thin leather of his gloves. In the few minutes he’d been talking in the churchyard, the sun had dipped below the horizon and left the gravestones and the steeple silhouetted in blue half-shadow. “Good— good evening, sir.” He managed to spit out the words with some semblance of politeness, but even so, the sexton merely chuckled. “And may it be a good evening, doctor. Consider what I’ve said, for I’ve told you not one falsehood.” Livesey moved to speak, but the sexton turned away, slinging his bag of tools over his shoulder, and walked off towards the church, vanishing quickly into the shadows. For a long moment, Livesey watched him go, the wind blowing chill through his coat.

Northshore's Aboriginal History
Much of what is now the North Shore Hamilton area was known to Aboriginal people as Yerrol or Yurrol. This term referred to a rainforest vine used in hut-building and as a general fiber or rope. In the 19th century, Yerrol was described as a ‘scrub’ — a riverine rainforest pocket. This area, along with the fishery below it extending towards Breakfast Creek, served as the towrie, the primary hunting and resource area for one of Brisbane’s largest clusters of Aboriginal camps (Kerkhove, 2021).
Fauna – wallabies, pigeon, Australian bush rats, black snakes, grey-headed flying foxes, bush turkeys, wompoo fruit-doves and topknot pigeons.
Flora – vines, palms, cedars, pines, orchids, and figs.
Ideas based on Key Themes
Rainforest – revegetation, floral designs, traditional bush tucker – mural, community garden, vine sculptures
Black bean tree – empty bean pods were used to make children’s toy canoes – playground (incorporates waterways & youth-focused target audience)
Basketry – weaving, textiles – crafting workshops using natural and recycled materials – “how-to” via QR code
Campsite – “yarning circles” – place of gathering, sharing wisdom and culture.

First Nation Connection
Tumblr media
Key Takeaways
‘Home to thousands’
With the 2032 Olympics in mind, the fact that Northshore will be home to the athlete's village is ironic. With the land once home to northern area travellers, I think its important to highlight how it was and always will be home to travellers.
‘An Important site for corrobories and Towrie’
Acknowledging that this area was the main hunting and resource area intertwines with the concept of placemaking quite well. The area serves as a significant place for people to gather, connect and mutually appreciate the land that stands around them.
‘Yerrol’ - Vine
It’s very intriguing yet bittersweet that the industrial land that stands today used to be rainforest. I think it’s important to pay homage to the Yerrol that was once such a predominant part of the Northshore..
Yurrol
Yurrol (vine) was an important resource for fibre (rope), canoe-tying, hut-building etc and features as a place name further north also. Invariably it was connected with a rainforest patch. Hamilton and Eagle Farm below Kingsford Smith Drive had an extensive rainforest patch.(Kane, 2022)
Sacred Cairncross Rocks
Cairncross Rocks is a rock and is located in Queensland, Australia. The estimated terrain elevation above seal level is 5 metres. (Cairncross Rocks Rocks, Queensland, Australia, n.d.)

Indigenous History
Key Takeaways: I felt a strong connection to the use of plants & am interested in potentially following that up further in my creative concept, though I'm not quite sure what exactly I can do with this yet.
Yerrol (Rainforest Vine)
bittersweet revelation that this was what the area used to be -> it's become a beautiful urban area with cool development potential, but makes me realise just how much of the bush was destroyed for 'settlement' (i.e. colonisation)
concept of towrie (main hunting/resource area) is new to me but feel that it connects to the concept of placemaking in terms of the ideas that it's a specific place for ppl to come together -> Vanessa said during the site visit that it was almost a holiday destination for Indigenous ppl; reminds me of QUT Gardens Point's Dughuba ('The Gathering Place') where Cultural Bites is held every year
Useful Plants
reminds me of home (Sri Lanka) -> grandparents own a farm and live @ top of a rainforest mountain; parents know so much more about the names, properties & qualities of plants than I've ever known
different uses of plants is definitely something that I would like to know more about -> would also allow today's community to reconnect with nature/potentially even save lives (e.g. antihistamine properties)
Boats & Waterways
used river to cross to/from North to South & vice versa
had different types of canoes & rafts (all made of natural materials)
eventually competed in regattas with white settlers, but kept winning, so the colonisers made 2 separate leagues -> Indigenous ppl didn't want to compete against each other, though, so this tradition died out
lot of Indigenous jobs were also on boats -> 'saved' a lot of shipwrecks & got boats as rewards
Camps & Racism
nomadic Indigenous communities set up many camps in (now) North Shore area
all Aboriginals chased across Breakfast Creek during the evening in the 1850s (still remembered as a 'battle line' in Indigenous communities)
some Indigenous ppl began to retaliate, robbing white ppl passing through the area, resulting in further repercussions -> rioting, pillaging & attacking on both sides eventually caused most camps to be abandoned
Tumblr media
This is the "ghandapana" (literally translating to "emitting odour") flower. My garden in Sri Lanka was full of these, which is what made me think of them as a plant that I feel an emotional connection to. They look so pretty, but they smell TERRIBLE!
Tumblr media
I also have a spiritual connection to jasmine ("pichcha") flowers, because they are the most common offering in South Asian Buddhism :)

STEP 2: SWOT Analysis for Ideas
After my preliminary brainstorming and research into inspirational concepts, I still have quite a few different concepts that I had to narrow down. To narrow these down, I used a mixture of research to confirm feasibility and SWOT Analysis.
SWOT Analysis 1: Suspended Stained Glass Art Installation
Sources of Inspiration
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Image from: Bernstein (2015)
Tumblr media
Image from: Sierzputowski (2016)
Strengths
Engages with Aboriginal artists and will highlight the aboriginal history of the site.
An interesting interactive experience where visitors can interact with the coloured filtered light as the sun leaks through the suspended artwork.
Weaknesses
No reference to maritime history.
No technological aspect to the idea- this was a key criteria from the brief.
Heavily reliant on the weather being sunny.
Stained glass is not an artistic medium that Aboriginal artists have traditionally worked with- don’t want to overstep and ‘whitewash’ their heritage.
Opportunities
Haven’t seen any art installations similar to this one nearby.
Threats
There are art galleries and other activations which may be more immersive and inspire repeat visitation more than this idea.
As such, I did not go forth with this idea.
SWOT Analysis 2: Aboriginal Native Food Trail with QR code
Strengths
Highlights the Aboriginal history of the site, specifically that near the site was the towrie (main hunting/resource area) of one of Brisbane’s largest gatherings of Aboriginal camps.
Has an interactive technology aspect to the idea.
Weaknesses
As this idea is situated within The Workshops precinct, mass excavation to get up the bitumen so that gardens could be installed will be needed- which is not ‘light touch’, and would cost a lot of money.
This idea requires a lot of maintenance which would increase ongoing costs.
When I researched the history of the vegetation that used to be in historical Northshore (Yerrol), a lot of the vegetation that aboriginal groups used to eat were from large trees and plants which will take a long time to establish and require a lot of ongoing maintenance. As I want to be site-specific I wouldn’t want to insert ‘bush tucker’ which isn’t true to the history of the site and location.
Opportunities
International visitors often like to engage with aboriginal history and cultural tours.
Threats
There is currently another business operating 10mins away from Northshore called Nyanda Cultural Tours. They currently do bush food cultural tours and would be a direct competitor. Visitors may prefer the more personable experience of a guided tour, over a digital one.
SWOT Analysis 3: Painted aboriginal artwork pathway
Strengths
Emphasises the Aboriginal history of the site
Creates a visual link between The Workshops shipping containers and buildings.
Weaknesses
No technological element or digital footprint.
Once the artwork is put in place, no opportunity to be ‘refreshed’.
May not encourage repeat visitation to the site.
Opportunities
There is currently a lack of interconnection between the tenants of the site, and this may enhance the connection between both tenants and visitors.
Threats
Upon further research I discovered that Northshore already has a custom Indigenous artwork installation at The Shed, which visually was very similar to my idea (see image below).
Tumblr media
Image: 'Three Circles' Artwork by Birrunga Wiradyuri, currently located in The Shed at Northshore.
Due to the multiple weaknesses of this idea, as well as not hitting several the key criteria, I decided not to choose this concept.
Analysis 4: Repurposed old timbers used as a climbing support for native plant display.
Without doing a SWOT analysis, I knew that this concept alone wouldn’t be enough to draw repeat visitors to the site and didn’t adhere to the key aspects of the brief it needed to, specifically the technology and historical aspects. Therefore, I didn’t go ahead with this concept alone.
SWOT Analysis 5: QR Code AR Experience
Strengths
An immersive technological experience highlighting the history of the site.
Has a ‘light touch’ approach.
Could be refreshed throughout time.
Weaknesses
The current Workshops precinct is not visually appealing, and thus I don’t believe the AR experience alone will be enough to draw visitation.
Visitors may not feel comfortable walking around the industrial precinct in its current state.
Visitors could be a distraction for the current tenants that are there.
The precinct is very noisy, so any sound elements to the experience may not be heard.
Opportunities
Could attract a wide range of people.
Threats
I don’t have any knowledge in web development, so unsure of feasibility.
After undergoing the SWOT analysis, I decided that this idea wasn’t a great fit for this location or brief.
SWOT Analysis 6: Dry Riverbed Garden (outside the C-shaped shipping containers).
Strengths
Reconnects with nature.
Highlights native species, linking to indigenous history.
Weaknesses
No technological aspect to this concept.
Unsure if this is enough to draw people to the site specifically- would they just visit other park areas in Northshore?
Cannot be refreshed.
Ongoing maintenance costs.
No reference to the nautical history of the site.
Unsure if it will help ‘increase connectiveness’ between tenants.
Price to rip up bitumen would be costly.
Opportunities
Adds some much-needed greenery to The Workshops precinct which is not currently there, softening the currently quite harsh exterior.
Threats
Maritime Green is nearby and is a much larger, greener space than the Workshops precinct would have- people may just want to go there.
SWOT Analysis 7: Immersive Historical Shipping Container Activation
Sources of Inspiration
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Images from: Kojdanovski (2022)
Strengths
Draws upon historical aspect of the site, showcasing both indigenous and maritime history.
Has enduring significance- Can show different exhibitions.
Technological aspect
Immersive experience through interactive QR codes
Offers stakeholders a unique opportunity to experience a part of Brisbane’s history that hasn’t been showcased widely before.
Broad appeal to stakeholders
Light touch approach
Doesn’t require any demolition or very much building renovation.
Weaknesses
Mainly situated inside the shipping containers rather than drawing attention to the outside environment
Lack of visual connection to the Northshore riverfront.
Not an overly original idea
Aspects of the idea have been done before
May require security due to the technology being used.
Unsure if current tenants of the workshops would want to attend.
Opportunities
Fulfills the current need for the history of Northshore to be highlighted and represented
Threats
Not sure if it is too similar to the existing immersive art experience Northshore currently has.
Northshore has already invested a lot of $$$ into the art experience.
Unsure of the project costs- creation of material could go over budget.
Lack of confidence in my idea

Santos has quietly been granted federal environmental approval to drill 116 new coal seam gas wells in Queensland.
Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek's department on Friday gave the green light for fossil fuel producer Towrie's project in the Arcadia Valley, about 500 kilometres northwest of Brisbane.
The approval of 116 new wells, which will produce coal seam gas from the Surat Basin for 30 years and be linked to the Santos-owned GLNG gas export project in central Queensland, wasn't widely publicised.
Deputy Greens leader Mehreen Faruqi slammed the approval, saying Labor's climate change credibility was in tatters and talks on an emissions safeguard mechanism were in question.
...
Environmental group Lock the Gate Alliance said the Santos project was at odds with international efforts to halt fossil fuel expansion, to keep global temperature rises within 2C of pre-industrial levels.

The Nykur [Icelandic folklore]
Evil aquatic horses are a surprisingly common element in European folktales. Examples include the Kelpie, the Welsh Ceffyl Dŵr, the Flemish Nikker, the Orcadian Nuggle and the Icelandic Nykur. All or most of these myths are related to each other, but I do not know which story came first.
Like the other creatures, the Nykur is a supernatural horse-like being that lives underwater and tries to charm innocent people into climbing on its back to ride it. When they do, the Nykur quickly gallops into the water and drowns its victim, who is unable to escape because they suddenly stick to the creature’s back as if glued to it.
This monster distinguishes itself from the other mythical horses by having backwards hooves. It also has a grey skin. These creatures are also called Vatnaskratti (literally “water fiend” or “water demon”). In some versions, its ears are also backwards, and it has a strange (air?) bladder hanging under the left haunch.
When cracks appeared in the icy surface of frozen lakes, it was said that a Nykur was neighing.
Should you encounter one of these monsters, you only have to speak its name out loud: this will scare it off. If you are already riding it, making a cross sign would also prevent if from entering water. This detail shows the influence of Christianity on Icelandic mythology.
It is said that once, a grey horse suddenly appeared from Kumbur Pond, in Landsveit. The creature mated with a mare before disappearing as mysteriously as it appeared. In the same area, there is a local folktale about a particularly big cow that suddenly appeared. Its hide was grey but people didn’t have a reason to assume the animal was dangerous or supernatural. Until someone tried milking it and noticed that its hooves were facing the wrong direction. People were scared and no farmer wanted the animal, which became enraged. It stomped a child to death and disappeared.

Two Minutes Before Midnight, Bartosz Beda - Solo Exhibition at Ro2 Art Gallery, Dallas, TX
Dallas- Ro2 Art is proud to present Bartosz Beda: Two Minutes Before Midnight. For the exhibition, Two Minutes Before Midnight, Bartosz Beda introduces new paintings which explore humankind and the issues that society grapples with from the past to the present. In his artist statement, Beda recalls that there is a sense of tension and emptiness of life itself, where individualism and narcissism are a commodity rather than  a prophecy of failure. It feels as if it is” two minutes before midnight,” before a significant cultural, spiritual, and intellectual reset that will bring a new beginning. It is not doomsday but a nature correcting its course of ‘life’.

Artist statement
When I was a teenager, my Polish teacher told a story about archeologists who discovered hieroglyphs that described the youth as uneducated, sluggish, and unable to sustain civilization. I never followed up with the resource of the story and its accuracy; however, it made me think that two things seem to be repeating themselves. One is the lack of attention and inability to have common sense and comprehensive discussions on current issues. The second thing is the "warnings" and emptiness of life itself, where individualism and narcissism are a commodity and not a prophecy of failing. It feels as if it is two minutes before midnight, before a significant cultural, spiritual and intellectual reset that will bring a new beginning. It is not doomsday but a nature correcting its course of "life." The cautions and disbelief that the time we have now is perhaps mismanaged were given to us by great philosophers and thinkers who saw patterns and seasons in human nature and the history of humankind. Paintings explore the concept of historical patterns following the quote by the German philosopher Georg Hegel who famously said, "The only thing that we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history."  The Greek word "eudaimonia" reverted its meaning and assigned new rules of happiness that are now associated with extremes of joy, external achievements or events, and a lack of capacity to maintain a calm disposition no matter what. Perhaps rational and irrational elements of ethics bring us closer to two minutes before midnight. It all brings us to the great paradox of human nature. Humans as a complete whole and not a collection of parts are prone to false reasoning and mistaken beliefs that create a failure of reason and attachment to the universe's formal logic and rational will. Imperare sibi maximum imperium est (The greatest empire is to be emperor of oneself" or " The greatest kind of power is self-control").
