♡ Being in the Royal Marines wasn’t necessarily something you were embarrassed about. It was more a matter of wanting to get a fresh start at being a regular civilian, far away from the battlefield. That’s why your previous enlistment never came up in conversation when you met Ghost and got to know each other better.
♡ When you and Ghost eventually entered a full relationship, he was surprised by how understanding you were about his occupation and the things that came with it. You were also very curious about his military activities, something that no other civilian in his life ever had been.
♡ It was about a couple years into your relationship when you got a letter from your previous commanding officer, requesting your services again since they thought your skills would be valuable for that specific mission.
♡ You were hesitant to accept, but eventually you did and you found yourself on your way to meet with your commanding officer and talk business. You didn’t know, though, that your very own boyfriend would be serving on the same mission.
“It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Delta 2-1.” Captain Price says with a smile on his face. You smile in return and give him a firm handshake. “Please, call me Finch.” You correct him happily. “The pleasure is all mine. I’ve heard good things about you and your task force, Captain.” You put your arms behind your back with perfect poise, and give a nod toward the main building, walking off with Price in tow.
Simon stares from across the tarmac. His thoughts were racing, confused out of his mind. He almost had to remind himself to breathe, the amount of questions bouncing around in his head taking over all other thoughts, even his base instincts.
That’s why he almost imperceptibly jumps when a hand lands on his shoulder, tapping twice. He glances over to the person connected to said hand: Soap. “She’s one hell of a question mark, eh, L.T.?” He joins Simon in staring at the direction you and Price walked off to, shaking his head. “Heard she’s gonna be serving in place of Price. You know anything else about her?”
Well, he certainly did know about you. A lot of things about you. Why? Because you were his girlfriend, possibly soon to be fiancée. The only thing he didn’t seem to know about you was why exactly you were here, talking to his superior and ready to head out onto the same battlefield he’d been preparing to deploy into.
“No.” He answers simply. There was a reason Soap didn’t recognize her. He did his very best, and would do anything to keep his personal life and professional life separate; that’s why no one on the task force knew that he was romantically involved with anyone, save for Laswell. She knows absolutely everything, as much as it got on his nerves. At least she was good at keeping a secret. But now, here you were, present and apparently active in his work life. He sighs and looks over to Soap. “Tell the old man I’ll be in the weapons’ locker, if he asks.” He walks off and ignores whatever Soap was questioning him about.
♡ Ghost was shocked that he didn’t know about this particular part of your life, and he was even more shocked that you were actually considering going out on the field.
♡ It wasn’t that he doubted your abilities—quite the opposite, actually—but he was worried you’d get hurt. He was a powerful man but even he still managed to get hurt sometimes. So, knowing that you’d be at risk had him shaken up.
Simon lets out a heavy sigh. “Love, I need you to promise me you’ll be safe.” Simon has his hand on your shoulder, looking you up and down in the heavy tac vest you were adorned in. It was something he never imagined he’d see on you; it was pretty attractive, in all honesty, but he isn’t particularly focused on how attractive his lovely partner was.
He’s mostly concerned about the fact that you were about to be heading onto the field, assigned to a different team and dropped off in a location multiple klicks from where he would be. You shake your head and rest your hand on top of Simon’s. “I’ll be alright, Si. I promise.” You give him a comforting smile, taking his hand and holding it in yours. “This is nothing I haven’t done before.”
You look over Simon’s face, meeting his brown-hazel eyes and inspecting them: reading his thoughts. His eyes were so expressive, just as long as you knew what to look for. You could tell he was overly worried. You could also tell that he was fully prepared to blame himself if you got hurt out there. You swing his hand back and forth slightly, your own thoughts coming to the surface.
“You’ll be careful too, right?” You ask, your thumb running along the back of his knuckles. Simon sighs again and squeezes your hand in return. He was a calculated man but he was still susceptible to making decisions that would save his team, even if he would be putting himself in danger. Having you on the field with him was bound to make it worse.
But regardless, the last thing he wants is to distract you. Him getting himself into trouble was bound to draw your attention away from the mission. So, he nods and pulls his hand away, thinking for a moment. He wraps one of his arms around your waist then pulls the bottom of his mask up with the other.
Your eyes widen for a moment, taking a look out of the small alley between the buildings to make sure no one is watching. He takes your chin and rests his forehead on yours, kissing you gently. You lean into it, reaching up to his cheek to caress it. The two of you meet eyes once you pull away and stand there, gazing into each other's eyes for a few moments before Simon finally pulls away. “We’re wheels up soon. Let’s move.”
♡ He wasn’t expecting it, but experiencing the version of you in the heat of battle had him falling in love all over again. That commanding tone of voice and your proficiency with a weapon in hand, even after your years spent in retirement, were absolutely enrapturing to him.
♡ He wouldn’t have thought this of himself, but it seemed like watching you in your element made him realize that maybe he was attracted to that kind of power. You being his superior was only the icing on the cake.
“Delta Team, push up to the RV point!” You bark into the comms, the sound of grass and foliage cluttering your words. “Roger that, Finch. Move, move, move!” Simon honestly didn’t think he could fall in love with you even harder than he already has. Hearing you calling the shots over the comms was almost hypnotizing. He’d never heard your voice like that and it was a beautiful thing. He had to keep focus, though. He had his own team to direct.
Getting to the RV location was quite the hassle. Under a barrage of enemy fire—standard bullets, grenades, RPGs—keeping your team alive was a downright nightmare. But you managed it, the sight of Simon’s signature mask bringing you a slight bit of relief. “Ghost, sitrep, how long ‘til the charges blow?”
He doesn’t get the chance to respond before your eyes widen all of a sudden. “Look out!” You shout, shoving him to the side and toppling yourself down to the ground beside him. He grunts, looking at you confused before a sniper shot ricocheted off the ground right where he was previously standing.
“Snipers to the north, get down!” You call, taking Simon’s fallen rifle, getting into position to return fire, and quickly taking out the initial threat as though it was as easy as walking. If you weren't focused on calculating the best strategy out of this particular setback, you’d be able to see the stars in Simon’s eyes, his mind committing the sight of you expertly counter-sniping and potentially saving his life to memory. He didn't get much time to dwell on it any longer before he got dragged to his feet and rushed toward the nearest treeline.
♡ Once the operation was complete and you both got back to base with nothing but minor injuries, he finally had time to relax with you and reverse the roles, asking you an endless amount of questions about your time in active service, engrossed in the various stories you shared.
♡ Ghost listened carefully as you showed him the scars he had seen many times before and explained the story behind each one. He’d never asked before out of politeness but he got to appreciate them more fully now that he knew the details of each one.
A trail of goosebumps rises in the path of Simon’s fingers running along your spine. “I got that one a couple years into my service.” You recall, thinking about the scar he was tracing gently. His mind wanders as you talk, your voice soothing him through the imagery your story evoked.
“What about this one?” He rubbed his thumb over an old bullet wound on your side. You shift in your place on the tiny military-grade cot and sigh softly. “That was right before I retired. Sniper managed to hit between the plates.” His eyes widened at that, just a bit.
“And you managed to survive?” He chuckles softly when you nod. He leans down and pecks you on the cheek. “That’s my girl.” You blush, burying your face in the pillow beneath your head, making him laugh a bit again. He runs his hand through your hair, his fingers gentle. “So strong.” He squeezes the nape of your neck softly and feels the knots in your muscles, massaging them.
There was a peaceful silence between you two before Simon sighs. “What are you doing after all this?” You pick your head up just a bit, one brow raised. “What do you mean?” He pulls you close when you sit up to face him fully.
“Once this operation is over. Are you going to stay now that you’re back in?” He watches you process the question quietly. It was a good question. You didn’t really know what your plan was at this point. Leaving the service was a good choice on your part. You were happy just being a normal person, not constantly worrying about dying every time you left your bed.
But even so, being out on the field again was exhilarating. You didn’t imagine it would be a feeling you would miss, but now you were having second thoughts. Plus, it was wonderful being able to protect Simon yourself, knowing that as long as you were there, he was going to come back alive. You bite your lip in thought, before looking back up at him.
“I think I may stay. I’m not sure.” You run a hand up his shirt and over his back, your nails gently trailing against the scarred skin. He hums, his fingers starting to drum against your hip. “Don’t worry, Si. It’ll be okay. Promise. Plus, you need someone to make sure you don’t get yourself hurt.” You smile, kissing along his jaw and up his cheek. “I know, love, I know.” He smiles back, burying his face in your shoulder.

Incredibly, despite its futuristic appearance, work on the F-102 began in the 1940s. Tasked with intercepting Soviet bombers at a dangerous time in the Cold War, the F-102 was the tip of the spear for the defence of the USA. Colonel Dugard flew the F-102 for the 87th Fighter Interceptor Squadron of USAF in the late 1950s. Here he reviews the flawed but formidable F-102, a vital stepping stone to the excellent F-106.

What was your most memorable experience flying the F-102?
Flying as a target aircraft for other F-102s. On a night mission with a low overcast and after a couple of intercepts I got a red weapon systems light. I broke off the mission and although not an emergency for flight, called the command post and was told to RTB (return to Base). I proceeded to the fix for a penetration to station. And was told to hold due to traffic in the area. After holding for a substantial period-of-time I was cleared to penetrate. I was placed in the pattern as #3 for landing. I noticed my fuel state was getting low and the yellow fuel-light came on. The fuel counter had not started to click down so I was comfortable with my state. Finally, I was cleared for a GCA approach. On final my fuel counter started to click down and was notified to go-around due to an aircraft problem. As I started my go around, I told them I had a low fuel state. Approach Control acknowledged the call, but then let another aircraft slip in front of me for landing. The RED fuel light game on indicating I could not make a go-around on the next approach. I asked for an immediate clearance to be given a priority approach. Not getting a response I called out “Mayday”, Getting their attention I was placed on final and completed the approach and landing, After clearing the runway and jettisoning my drag chute on the taxiway, the aircraft engine flamed out. I was towed to a parking slot.

Never busted Mach 1, but close. 37,000 feet.

No, It was serviceable and a good flying machine, but never felt at home in it.

Typical fighter-oriented society. Alert oriented aircraft, called for rapid response and quick engagement.

Missile malfunctions

We were flying an interceptor, and the weapons we had on alert were very adequate for our mission.

CIF soybean basis bids were steady to firm, although nearby values were at a steep discount to deferred bids as rising supplies from the Delta region harvest weighed on the market. Bids for November barges were strong as traders anticipated good export demand and tighter available supplies as the harvest winds down. China's return from the mid-autumn festival holiday is expected to spark some soy buying by the world's top importer for November and December shipment, traders said. Low water on the lower Mississippi River impeded barge shipments to the Gulf and kept a firm floor under freight costs. Barge lines are limiting drafts and tow sizes, which is increasing the per-bushel cost of shipping. The Mississippi River at Memphis is forecast to fall to within 3 feet of its all-time low by the end of this month, according to National Water Prediction Service data. CIF corn barges loaded in September were bid 2 cents lower at 71 cents over Chicago Board of Trade December CZ24 futures. October barge bids were down 2 cents at 76 cents over futures. FOB Gulf export premiums for corn shipped in November, the earliest available loading slot, were up 2 cents at 112 cents over CBOT December futures. CIF September soy barges were bid 2 cents higher at 65 cents over CBOT November soybean SX24 futures, while October barge bids gained 1 cent to 71 cents over futures. FOB soy export premiums for the first half of November were steady at around 130 cents over futures, while last-half November offers were up 2 cents at 118 cents over futures.

FLIGHTLINE: 191- SAAB 37 VIGGEN ("BOLT" OR "TUFTED DUCK")
Designed to replace older fighters and attack aircraft in the Swedish Air Force, the Viggen served from the early 70s into the early 2000s.
Development of the Viggen began almost before the planes it was intended to replace, the SAAB 32 Lansen and 35 Draken, took their maiden flights, with the Swedish Air Force beginning work on requirements in 1955. Included were integration into the STRIL-60 electronic air defense system, supersonic speed at low level and Mach 2 performance at altitude, and the ability to land and take off from short, rough fields or even stretches of highway. The latter was further codified in Bas 60, a system of dispersal bases and alternate runways developed by the Swedish Air Force starting in 1958. In the event of war, individual squadrons would be dispersed to krigsflygbaser ("wartime air bases") which had been established ahead of time. Additionally, civilian air ports and specially built sections of the national highway system could also be used as alternatives. As a result, the new aircraft would need to be able to land and take off in 500 meters or less, and further requirements included a modest landing speed at low angles of attack in order to avoid damaging ad hoc runways.
SAAB began design work on a new aircraft between 1952 and 1957, examining and discarding over 100 concepts along the way. Aircraft with one or two engines, tailless delta wings, double deltas, canard designs, and VTOL aircraft incorporating lift jets were all conceived, but by 1963 the new plane, officially titled Aircraft System 37, had taken the form of a single engined aircraft with a double-delta wing mounted low and to the stern, with a large canard foreplane mounted high on the intakes. This configuration had been proven to give the best balance of performance at low and high altitude as well as the needed STOL capability and maneuverability expected of a front-line strike fighter. A defense treaty signed between Sweden and the United States in 1960 allowed access to US research and technology, which resulted in SAAB selecting a license built P&W turbofan to power the System 37. The following year, construction of the first prototype of what became the Viggen began.
DESIGN AND SPECIFICATIONS

The SAAB 37 was roughly the same size as the J 35 Draken, being 16.4m long, with a wingspan of 10.6m, and a height of 5.9m. Empty weight was 9,500kg, while max TO weight varied from 16,400kg to 17,000kg depending on the variant. Maximum speed was Mach 2.1 (2,231 kph) at 11,000 meters, while maximum altitude was 18,000 meters. Six fuel tanks within the aircraft provided a capacity of 5,000 liters of fuel, giving the Viggen a combat radius of 1,000km and a ferry range of 1,800km, while an auxiliary drop tank of 1,500l could also be added to further increase the range. Power was provided by a Volvo RM8A turbofan, a modified and license-built version of the P&W JT8D originally designed for the Boeing 727 and 737. Volvo modified the P&W engine design, with more robust materials going into the manufacture to withstand sustained flight at Mach 2, as well as the addition of an afterburner and thrust reverser, making it the first turbofan so equipped. The RM8A had a dry thrust of 65.6kN and with AB this increased to 115.6kN. As the 37 was designed to be both mechanically simple and easy to maintain, the inlets were D-shaped and without adjustable geometry ramps as on contemporary fighters like the F-4, instead only simple boundary layer splitter plates were incorporated. The thrust-reverser could be preset to engage once the nose gear strut compressed, an innovative feature. Electrical power was provided through a 60kVA generator, and in emergencies a ram-air turbine capable of generating 6kVA was automatically deployed.
The 37's airframe was composed of an aluminum honeycomb structure; a ring aft of the engine was fabricated from titanium for heat-resistance. In order to pull the Viggen into smaller hangars and hardened shelters, the vertical stabilizer cold be folded down via an actuator. The main landing gear, designed for short, rough fields as well as temporary landing strips or stretches of highway, had two wheels arranged in tandem; both wheels were fitted with anti-skid brakes.

The Viggen used a sophisticated suite of avionics, including the Central Kalkylator 37 (CK37, "Central Calculator 37), the first airborne computer to utilize integrated circuits. This digital computer replaced the analogue machines used on earlier aircraft, such as the J 35, which had proven to be difficult to maintain as well as inaccurate in use. On later models of the Viggen, the CK37 was replaced by a license-built copy of the American CD107, which was more powerful. The Viggen used electronics countermeasure equipment developed by Satt Elektronik, including radar warning receivers in the wings and tail, as well as infrared warning receivers. Optionally, an optional Ericsson Erijammer pod and/or SAAB BOZ-100 chaff/flare pod could be added. All told, the SAAB 37 carried 600kg of avionics, a substantial load for single-seat, single engine fighter of the era. Depending on the variant, the Viggen was equipped with either the Ericsson PS 37 or PS 46 radar, both of which operated in the X-band. The PS 37 was capable of air-to-ground and air-to-air telemetry, search, track, terrain-avoidance and cartography, while the more advanced PS 46 had a look-down/shoot-down capacity in excess of 50km, and which could track two targets simultaneously.
The cockpit displays of the 37 included traditional "steam gauge" instruments, as well as a HUD and three CRT screen, which were used to display radar imagery, computer-generated maps, as well as flight and weapons information. During the late 1990s, these CRTs were replaced by LCD screens. The right side of the console panel had dedicated controls and indicators for weapons as well as navigation, oxygen, windshield de-fogging, IFF, and lighting. Situated on the left side were controls for the radar, as well as the landing gear handle, radio controls and the cabin pressure indicator.

The pilot was seated on a Raketstol 37 ("Rocket chair 37"), designed for low-altitude, high-speed ejections, and was the last Saab-designed seat used. Once triggered, the entire ejection sequence was automated, including separation of the seat from the pilot. Manual triggers were included in case of malfunction. On twin-seat versions, the pilot in the front cockpit can trigger ejection for both seats.
VARIANTS AND WEAPONS
There were five variants of the Viggen, along with several upgrades and service-life extensions. The AJ 37 (Attack Jakt, "Strike Fighter") was the first to enter service, and was an attack variant with a secondary fighter mission. As such, the AJ's seven pylons could carry 7,000kg of stores, including unguided bombs and pods, such as the Bofors M70, for rockets, as well as the Rb04 anti-ship missile and the Rb05 air-to-surface missile (roughly equivalent to the American Bullpup). No cannon was fitted, though one or two pods could be carried, each of which housed a license-built Aden 30mm cannon and 150 rounds of ammunition. Finally, license-built copies of the AIM-9 Sidewinder, known as the Rb24, could be carried for self-defense. The Viggen was also cleared to carry AIM-4 Falcons, known as the Rb28 in Swedish service, but these were in the process of being phased out. The AJ 37's radar was not spec'd for BVR missiles. 109 AJ 37s were produced.

The second model was the SF 37 (Spanings Foto, "Photo Reconnaissance"), which was a modification of the AJ fuselage, with a new nose containing 7 cameras replacing the radar of the strike version. The camera fit included vertical and oblique cameras, as well as an infrared line scanner and data recording unit. Additional pods could be carried under the intakes, including a "Red Barron" night recon unit or a forward-looking long-range optical (LORP) pod. The SF 37 was fitted with radar-warning receivers and countermeasures pods, and could carry self-defense Sidewinders, but the plane lacked a radar, and was not fitted with a gunsight. 28 total SF 37s were completed.

The third variant was the SH 37 (Spanings Havsoevervakning, "Coastal Surveillance & Reconnaissance") model, which was externally identical to the AJ 37, but the nose contained a new Ericsson PS-371/A radar, which was optimized for maritime surveillance. Like the SF 37, the SH could carry the Red Barron or LORP camera pods, but like the AJ it could also carry the Rb04 anti-ship missile, as well as the other offensive and defensive equipment of the strike version. 27 SH 37 aircraft were built between 1977 and 1979, and Flygvapnet reconnaissance squadrons operated a mix of the SF 37 and SH 37.

A two-seat trainer variant was not initially ordered, but the Swedish Air Force reversed itself, and one of the prototypes was completed as a trainer, designated the Sk 37 (Skol, "School"). Based on the AJ 37 airframe, a second cockpit was grafted onto the fuselage, with part of a fuel tank being removed to make space. Two periscopes were added to the instructor's cockpit to improve his view. The tail fin was also modified, with a 10cm extension added to the top of the fin. The trainer version did not have a radar, and although stores could be fitted the the accurate delivery of bombs was somewhat compromised. Interestingly, the Sk retained the fairings for the radar warning gear, though the RWR equipment was not carried. 17 Sk 37s were produced.

The final production variant was the JA 37 (Jakt, "Fighter"), which saw a longer development as the Flygvapnet felt no rush to retire the J 35 Draken. The JA variant had the same tail extension as the Sk 37, and the fuselage was also stretched 10cm ahead of the wing to accommodate the more powerful RM8B engine, which had a maximum output of 125kN with afterburner. The interceptor had four elevator actuators versus the three present on the other models of Viggen, as the Flygvapnet saw the need for additional maneuverability, and the structure was reinforced to withstand higher stresses. In total, a JA 37 was approximately 400kg heavier than an AJ 37. The fighter carried different avionics than the other Viggen as well, including a PS-46/A radar, with look-down/shoot-down capacity and a range of 48km. The JA 37 also carried a more powerful central computer, the Garrett LD-5 digital air data computer (the same unit carried on the F-14 Tomcat), and one of the first digital flight-control systems. The fighter version was armed with a single Oerlikon KCA 30mm cannon, which had more range and punch than the Aden cannon carried by the AJ 37. The JA 37 had the same seven pylons as other models, with the center hardpoint being the only "wet" (capable of carrying a fuel tank) one. The other pylons could carry up to four Rb24 Sidewinders, as well as two Rb71 Skyflash semi-active radar homing (SARH) missiles. The JA 37 could carry the M70 rocket pods, with the gunsight being used for aiming, but the type was not capable of carrying the other bombs and missiles available to the AJ 37.

TESTING AND OPERATIONAL HISTORY
The first Viggen prototype was rolled out of the factory on 24 November 1966, with maiden flight occurring on 8 February 1967, the flight lasting 43 minutes. The second Viggen followed in flight on 21 September '67, and the third on 29 March 1968. By April 1969, all six of the single seat prototypes were flying in different trials for the forthcoming AJ 37 variant. The first aircraft was involved in a fatal accident on 31 May 1968 when the pilot dropped a flight checklist and in reaching for it triggered the ejection seat. Being an early model, it was not a true "zero-zero" seat, and the parachute did not open in time, killing test pilot Lennart Fryoe. The aircraft was repaired and returned to flight shortly thereafter. The fourth prototype was written off after leaving the runway and rolling over during a test on the thrust reverser on 7 May 1969, though the pilot was not seriously injured. That same month, the Viggen made its first public world-wide appearance at the Paris Air Show. On 5 April 1968, a production order for 175 Viggens, a mix of AJ, SF, SH and Sk variants, was placed, with the first production AJ 37 having its maiden flight on 23 February 1971 and delivery to the Flygvapnet in June of that year.

The Skaraborg Air Force Wing became the first wing to receive the Viggen in 1971, with pilots completing a 450 hour course, first in the SAAB 105 trainer, then the J 32 Lansen before graduating to the Sk 37 tainer and finally the AJ 37. Dedicated simulators were also used, which was later cited as a major factor in pilot's ease of flying the new plane. Still, it took until October 1973 for the Wing to reach full effectiveness; by May 1974 two squadrons were fully operational with the third rapidly approaching complete status. The SH 37 maritime recon variant was officially introduced in 1975, followed in 1977 by the SF photo recon version. In September 1980 the JA 37 fighter model was added, with the Bråvalla Air Force Wing being the first to convert. By the mid-1980s, the Viggen was the Flygvapnet's primary air-defense platform, with the older Lansen relegated to target-tugs and electronics warfare, while the last J 35F wing converted in 1985.

The Viggen proved to be as easy to maintain as SAAB's engineers intended, with a team of five conscripts under the supervision of one chief mechanic able to keep a plane flying. Refueling and rearming a Viggen could be accomplished in as little as ten minutes, and an engine change could be completed in four hours. The 37 required 9 hours of front-line maintenance and 22 hours of depot level maintenance per flight hour, compared to the J 35, which required a total of 50 hours of maintenance per flight hour.
The effectiveness of the Viggen, as well as the Swedish air defense network as a whole, was demonstrated in the 1980s when, on several occasions. JA 37s tracked USAF SR-71 Blackbirds on their tracks into and out of Soviet airspace. Aided by the predicable course of the Blackbirds, and fed intercept data from ground controllers, the Viggen became the only aircraft acknowledged to have achieved radar lock-on of an SR-71, despite heavy jamming efforts by the American spy planes. These intercepts were kept classified well into the 2000s.
In the early 1990s, an upgrade program was started to modify the AJ, SF and SH variants to a single common configuration, known as the AJS 37. The modified Viggen would be a multi-role aircraft, and numerous upgrades were completed on the aircraft, including the addition of a new data bus and radar, which allowed the AJS 37s to carry AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles (license-built as the Rb99). The upgraded Viggen were also capable of carrying the Rb75, a license-built copy of the AGM-65 Maverick and the Rb15F, an upgrade of the Rb4 anti-ship missile. In all, 115 AJS 37 were completed, with maiden flight of the first converted aircraft occurring on 4 June 1996.
Ten Sk 37s, meanwhile, were converted to electronics warfare trainers between 1998 and 2000, which allowed the planes to act as aggressors during training exercises. This conversion was fairly involved, adding a new data bus, a GPS receiver and comprehensive reworking of the former instructor pilot's cockpit which included flat-panel displays, jammer controls and a separate radio for the electronics warfare officer. The Sk37 E Stoer ("Jammer") was also modified to carry a built-in radar jammer as well as external ECM and flare/chaff pods. The Stoer could also act operationally if the need arose.
The JA 37 fighters also received a series of upgrades in the 90s, including glass cockpit displays, new mission computers and data busses, improved ECM capabilities, a Synthetic Attitude Heading Reference System (SAHRS) to improve navigation, and an upgraded radar that allowed them to also carry the Rb99 AMRAAM missile.

Despite these upgrades, the Viggens were rapidly approaching the end of their service lives, and in fact had received several extensions due to the protracted development and production of the JAS 39 Grippen that was to take their place. These issues were finally sorted out in the early 2000s, and the final JA 37D was retired from Swedish service in 2005, while the Sk 37E held on until 2007. There were no export operators of the Viggen, despite the proposed 37X variant for Norway in the late 60s, and an attempt in 1975 to sell the 37E model to NATO as a replacement for the F-104 Starfighter.
SURVIVORS
Two Viggen, an AJS and an Sk, are registered to the Swedish Air Force Historic Flight association and are maintained in flight-worthy condition, registered as SE-DXN and SE-DXO respectively. Nearly two dozen Viggen, in part or in whole, are on display in Sweden and across Europe.

“Well, despite my extensive protestations, I cannot find any reason whatsoever to keep you here.” Anton, the head of the Crovan’s Gate diesel shop, said as he shut his toolbox with a petulant clang.
55 010 and Wendell looked at each other with no small amount of relief. Since the events of Christmas, the works had been beside themselves in trying to find a cause of 010′s existence as well as fixing the damage to Wendell’s chassis from when he fell off the jack stands on Christmas day.
A naturally superstitious man, Anton had refused to clear 010 for traffic until he went over her with a fine-toothed comb. This was a process that had taken over a month, and had insulted Wendell more than it had 010, as the Class 47 had believed that Anton was looking for a way to keep 010 out of traffic (he was), while the Deltic - who hadn’t been properly serviced since the late 1970′s - found the whole process very therapeutic.
All that being said, the pair were anxious to get out of the sheds and onto the main line once again - Wendell wanted to stretch his wheels properly, while 010 was deeply excited to see the bright future of the year 2020.
Anton left, shutting off the lights behind him. The two engines would have kept talking, but they’d honestly exhausted their conversational reserves after being together for over a month, so instead they fell asleep, dreaming of the world outside the sheds...

One group was saying that she should be shoved onto the out of use lines, while the others were saying that doing that would take too long. The 47 seemed to be stuck in the middle, unsure of which side to take. At one point, he opened his mouth to agree with the shunting plan, before he stopped. A flurry of emotions passed across his face in an instant, before he shut his mouth, glared at the men he’d been about to agree with, and put his wheel down.
“I’m not going to miss my path and spend all day in passing loops just to put her away - look at all the switches you’d have to hand throw! It’d take ages!”
With that the other men now held a majority, so without much more discussion the 47 was coupled up to her, and the train set off for parts unknown.

“Where are we going?” She’d sleepily asked the 47 - who’d introduced himself as number 556 - as they rattled across the Pennines.  
“Dunno,” He’d said quietly - they were coupled face-to-face, and she felt vaguely bad that he was driving backwards on her behalf. “Some coach depot I’ve never heard of - Titfield or Tidmouse or something like that.”

December 27, 1981
Tidmouth Station, Tidmouth, Tidmouth and South Haltraughshire, Sodor
47 556 and 55 010 eventually made it across the bridge and onto the Island very early on the morning of the 27th. It was a quiet little Island railway out here in the west country, and they met few trains on their way by.
A class 86 shouted hello from an electrified branch.
A old Hymek, somehow still in service, honked amiably as he passed with a goods train.
Even an old blue steam engine clattered by on a rail tour. This one looked at them funny, but the expected malice wasn’t there, merely confusion at the unusual double-header.
Eventually arriving at the big station at the end of the line, the two engines were met by a older gentleman in a top hat.
He introduced himself as the Controller for the region, and asked what they were doing here.
As 556 explained why he was also carrying a broken-down Deltic on his train, 010′s attention wandered to the rest of the station.
It was a beautiful design, like King's Cross, or Euston before they ruined it, but the roof of the trainshed was simply covered in soot - it was almost like they hadn’t cleaned it since before the end of steam.
Then there was a whistle from outside the platforms.
Both diesels goggled as a tender engine, painted an almost gaudy shade of bright blue with red lining, rolled into the station with a train of teak coaches.
At almost the same time, two more whistles were heard, and a train of GWR autocoaches complete with a Pannier Tank in the middle rattled in alongside a green saddle tank engine of indeterminate origin towing a pair of ancient compartment coaches.
“What is that?” 010 asked, shocked to see clean and well-maintained steam this far into the 1980s.
“Those are Gordon, Duck, and Percy.” Said the controller kindly.
“Are they all on rail tours?” Asked 556, causing the controller to laugh.
“No! They’re my engines! They work every day because they’re still useful.”
Neither diesel said anything. 556 was shocked that BR was allowing this to happen, but 010 suddenly felt a surge of hope. If they were still running steam here, maybe she could convince 556 to leave her here on his way home...
Something must have shown in her face - or maybe even 556′s, because the next thing the controller said was: “If I may, my railroad is currently experiencing a locomotive shortage. We have to keep relying on the other railway for temporary engines, but they aren’t the most reliable. Would either of you happen to know where I could find some strong, hardworking locomotives?”

They stabled 556 and 010 in the sheds with the steam engines over the New Year’s holiday. It was an almost out-of-body experience for 010, who was used to the cold and unfriendly atmosphere of Finsbury Park TMD, and had no idea how to deal with engines who, when told to treat her nicely, immediately made sure to include her in their singing of  Auld Lang Syne.
A few weeks later, both engines had been successfully outshopped at the massive works complex in the west of the island. 556 had required little repairs, but had rolled out with a new coat of paint and a new name, Wendell, chosen after a friendly dog that hung around the works.
It took longer for 010. She had many, many worn out parts that required removal and repair, and her engines needed a full overhaul. During this time period, some of the female welding staff had spoken to her about needing to choose a name before one was chosen for her - apparently the Hymek she’d seen was named Bear, and she didn’t want that did she?
After a few days with books on baby names, a set of brass nameplates were bolted to her sides - they read “DAPHNE” in big letters.
While she was there, the workmen asked her what she wanted to be painted. When her request for a new coat of Rail Blue was met with groans, the men explained that they were bored of normal paint schemes and would paint anything she wanted.

Two weeks later she rolled out of the works feeling like a new engine. Her motors fired on all cylinders, her grease and oil was fresh, and her new paint sparkled in the sun. She’d always liked how Deltic - The Deltic, DP1 - had looked, and the men had grinned at each other when she told them about how the irritable prototype had spent most of his free time whining about not having stripes that went the whole way down his body.
Daphne found out why when she rolled into Tidmouth Shed that night. There was another express diesel on this island - a big Class 46 - and the similarities were striking. Both had similar designs, and had non-standard paint - the 46 was red, she was blue - with gold stripes down their sides. The 46 was named Delta - a very similar sounding name, and when she opened her eyes and took in Daphne and her nameplates, it took her all of two seconds to begin smiling broadly.
“You look like you could be my big sister!” She said.
Daphne, expecting some sort of hostility, wasn’t sure how to respond. “Well, all of my sisters are dead, so it would be nice to have one again.”
She began to backpedal when the 46 stopped smiling, but the look she gave was thoughtful instead of hurt. “Come to think of it, all of mine are probably dead too. Shall we make our own family then?”
And so it was.

A few weeks later, Daphne and Wendell finally met all but one of the other diesels on the region - a Class 28 named BoCo, Bear the Hymek, and Daisy, a deeply customized Class 101. According to Daisy, there was also a Class 01 named Mavis who worked on a private quarry at the end of her branch line.
“You know,” Daisy said after Delta finished introducing everyone. “Aside from having one of each power rating, I think all of us but Wendell would have been scrapped by now if we were on the mainland. I think we should do something to celebrate the fact that we aren’t dead.”
The other diesels agreed - word had already spread about Delta and Daphne’s nontraditional sisterhood - and they agreed to form a club: the Non-Standard Survivors Society.
“But, I’m not non-standard?” Wendell asked as they dispersed. “Am I?”
“No, but you are really cute,” Delta joked. “So we’ll give you a pass.”
Daisy chuckled as she headed for the platform. “I’ll have to remember that when I tell Mavis about this club she’s in now.”
Daphne was confused. “Cute? What do you mean cute?”
Wendell was similarly puzzled.
Bear and Delta looked at each other meaningfully. “You two have so much to learn...” The type 3 said as he backed into the station.
That didn’t make Daphne or Wendell feel any better!

1983  
“You know,” Said Delta one morning in the newly-refurbished diesel shed. “We should have nicknames for the society.”
“My name is Bear,” Said Bear. “yours is a Greek letter. How much more nickname-y can we get?”
“The rest of us should get nicknames then. And I feel like I could get a great nickname, like Tiger Stripes!”
Daphne giggled as Bear growled under his breath. “And why, pray tell, are you Tiger Stripes?”
“Because I’m fierce like a tiger! And I have stripes like a tiger does! It also matches the animal theme we’re going with.” Either Delta could think at a mile a minute, or she had been considering these nicknames for a lot longer than she let on.
“A tiger does not have stripes like you do.”
“How do you know?”
“My name is Bear. I know about animals. I have to.”
“I figured it was so that we could be ‘Lions, Tigers, and Bears, oh my!’” Quipped Daphne. “I guess that makes me Lion Stripes then.”
Delta’s sputtering and spluttering made it very clear that she hadn’t thought of that, and Bear and Daphne roared with laughter.

Later that year
The Thin Clergyman’s son made another trip to Sodor to research for his next books.
Daphne, as an express engine, had been rather removed from the strife among the rank-and-file engines caused by the Thin Clergyman’s books, and had no idea why Delta wanted to hide from him.
After a “short” explanation that took almost an hour, Daphne was now furious.
While she did help Delta by hiding her deep inside an old carriage shed, she did not stay there herself; She was an engine of action, and would deal with the problem directly.
Two days later, the Clergyman’s Son approached her to ask her some questions.
“If my sister shows up in one of your books you won’t survive to write another.” She said darkly to the author, who retreated immediately! 
The Clergyman’s Son’s next book focused about Diesels and James. Much to everyone’s amusement, Delta was nowhere to be found in it, despite her being being the biggest reason why James was more accepting of diesels.
Unsurprisingly, Daphne did not appear either, and everyone wondered if the story of the rude diesel who crashed through a wall was based on her in some way. Delta, on the other wheel, stayed uncharacteristically silent!
Wendell was most offended that they hadn’t even bothered to include his name in the book, and refused to speak to the Clergyman’s Son again!

1985
Bear and Wendell had both gotten very scruffy looking after several years without a repaint, and went into the works with the intent of coming out looking the same as they had before.
They had reckoned without Delta and Daphne, who had very kindly asked the paint shop workers to be imaginative on their friends.
Bear had rolled out first, looking furious about the deception, but rather pleased with his paint. The men had been inspired by some American locomotives, and he rolled out of the shop in a dark shade of green with metallic gold stripes down his sides.  Any lingering discontent he had felt lasted until Henry saw him for the first time and dragged him away behind a shed without a word. Daphne tried to ask what was going on, but Delta, laughing too hard to even speak, had pulled her away to the station.
Wendell came out a few days later. Whatever the men had originally tried hadn’t been to his liking, he explained, and he’d asked them to try a different design from the same book that they’d pulled Bear’s paint scheme from. When he came into the sheds painted a glossy black with grey and white stripes, Daphne felt both of her crankshafts do a flip-flop.
Delta took one look at the slack jawed expression on her adopted sister’s face and sighed deeply. How had Jamie seen this coming before she did?
It took all of a week for Bear and Wendell to have nicknames foisted on them by the express sisters - Ursus and Cobra stripes, respectively. Delta explained that she liked the predatory animal theme that went with Lion and Tiger, while Daphne innocently pointed out that it had absolutely nothing to do with how much it annoyed Bear.
The nicknames did eventually stick though, in no small part because Henry had taken one look at how irritated Bear was and started calling him Ursus!
It took a month after that for Tiger Stripes to take pity on her sister and the piteous faces she made when she thought Wendell wasn’t looking, pulled a Flying Scotsman, and told her and Cobra Stripes exactly what those feelings meant. She was very unsurprised when Wendell revealed that he was also growing attracted to Daphne.
Henry and James both joked that one day, Bear or Delta would put one of them through a wall, but three weeks later, Daphne managed to put herself and Wendell into the parking lot behind Barrow Sheds.

1990
After realizing that Mavis and Daisy both technically had stripes painted on them (making them Wasp and Cougar stripes), the other diesels began to seriously peer pressure BoCo into getting repainted with stripes so they could complete the set.
He’d held out for many years, but after Daphne took a special train to the clay pits, there was suddenly pressure from within the Brendam Branch as well, and he folded like a house of cards in less than a week.
When he came back from the works, he was now green, gold, and white, but also red, if you counted the angry blush on his face.
“I asked them for Southern Railway Green with a gold stripe.” He seethed. “But clearly there was a misunderstanding.”
The howling from his compatriots was earthshakingly unsympathetic, but nobody could deny that he looked striking, and he was quickly dubbed Jaguar Stripes, even though - as he and Bear were quick to note - he did not look like a Jaguar at all.

1995
James asked Delta to marry him. The other engines were overjoyed, even if they BoCo and Daisy needed some catching up on how exactly that was possible.
Daisy groaned. “Mavis and I are going to have to have a talk, aren’t we?”
The other diesels - which by this point included James and Henry in an honorary capacity - hadn’t quite processed that when BoCo announced that if he was being honest, he and Edward were “so emotionally codependent that we’ve probably been married for twenty years without realizing it.”
Henry couldn’t take it any more and screeched with laughter at the conversational disparities - he’d just left the steam sheds, where the engines were still unaware that London had multiple termini, and were therefore having a rousing argument as to whether the impending fall of British Rail meant that London’s terminus station would magically return to being King’s Cross or Paddington instead of the current Euston.

1996
James and Delta were wed in a quiet ceremony behind the diesel shed - Siobhan, her fiancé Declan, and all the members of the “Non Standard Society” - including Mavis, who traveled down specially for the event - were present, with Daphne and Henry acting as bridesmaid and best man.
By design, the engines had arrived in pairs, with only BoCo “going stag”, as he hadn’t yet told Edward how he felt. The officiant - a kind looking man from the Arlesburgh judiciary - had taken one look at the rest of them and asked if he should be preparing for any other weddings in the near future. Daphne and Wendell were the only ones to say yes instinctively. (Much to each other’s surprise!) When Daphne looked over at Bear and Henry, they said with no small amount of irritation that it wasn’t legal yet for them to be wed. Similar grumblings then erupted from Mavis and Daisy, which briefly made the quiet ceremony very loud, as none of the other engines had been aware that either diesel was dating!

2000
Dull yellow smoke billowed out of Percy’s funnel as the men did a pressure test. Before Daphne or Wendell could do anything, they were enveloped by the choking cloud. 
Daphne shut her eyes to avoid getting any of the strange metallic soot in her eyes, and when she opened them again, the works looked... different somehow. 
A few of the new inspection pits were gone, while the diesel shop building had one less door than it should. 
Daphne opened her mouth to ask Wendell what was going on, and then stopped dead in her tracks when a workman ran right through her. 
Looking down at herself, she appeared to be fully transparent, floating above the rails like a ghost of Deltics past. 
“Who are you?!” Wendell squeaked. 
Daphne looked at him for a moment. His paint was a different colour than it had been a minute ago - Rail Blue instead of Black and Gray - and he seemed like he didn’t remember her at all. 
“Cobra,” She said, not even thinking that this was not the time for nicknames. “It’s me, Lion. You know me.”
“I know exactly who you are.” He said frantically. “You’re the ghost of the engine I killed! It’s not Christmas! Begone with you!”
“What?!” Daphne was horrified. “Wendell, what on Earth are you talking about!? Nobody’s dead! How can you say that?!”
“Don’t you overreact here Lion!” Wendell snapped. “I should be the one screaming! Ignoring whatever it is you are, there are dinosaurs eating the ballast! That water tower has a face!”
Daphne suddenly understood that there was something in the yellow smoke that was making both of them see things that weren’t there. With that in mind, she spent most of the next few hours keeping Wendell calm until the hallucinations stopped, and he turned back into the black and gray diesel she’d fallen in love with.  
A few weeks later, and Daphne asked Wendell about what he saw in the yellow smoke. 
“I saw a bunch of brightly coloured horses singing about friendship. Why?”
“Just curious...” Daphne said as she realized that maybe her hallucinations had been much stronger than she thought!

Later That Same Year
A new high speed trainset arrived on Sodor. Their names were Pip and Emma.
They had been on the island once before in the early 80′s, but somehow none of the diesels had met them in anything other than passing.
After three nights on Sodor, Delta declared that she liked them and was “keeping them”, giving them no choice in the matter on the subject of express engine sisterhood. Daphne explained that Delta was less of an engine and more of a force of nature, to which Emma responded that she and Pip were ‘the Dragon Sisters’ and could take care of themselves.
Both Dragons realized that they had even less of a choice when Daphne's face lit up like a Christmas tree upon hearing that!
Learning that the duo already had animal-themed nicknames for themselves made it much easier for Lion and Tiger Stripes to press-gang their new sisters into the “Non-Standard Survivors Society”, and even easier to get them painted into the old Intercity “Swallow” paint scheme.
Even for express locomotives, the speed at which the two went from Pip and Emma to Dragon Stripes was remarkable.

Even later that same year
Donald screamed all the way to the Little Western, unable to shake the image of a unified force of Red Eyed, Soul Stealing, Mind Controlling, Memory Altering, Diesel Electric Monsters!

2001
Pip and Emma taught the other diesels how to breathe fire.
Being the sort of sisters that they were, Daphne, Emma, Pip, and Delta soon began hosting competitions to see who could shoot fire the furthest. This did not help Oliver’s mental state at all.

2004
The United Kingdom allowed same-sex couples to enter into a “civil union” on the 14th of March. The engines knew it wasn’t actual marriage, but it was more than they’d been allowed before, and Daisy and Mavis, and Henry and Bear were wed by The Magistrate that night, with Delta and James acting as best man and bride/groomsmaid in all the ceremonies.
Immediately afterwards, Daphne and Wendell - who had agreed not to be wed until their friends could - tied the knot as well.
The rest of the Society (BoCo, Pip, Emma) and Siobhan and her husband Declan cheered until they were hoarse.
The next morning, Stephen and Richard Hatt, as well as most of the steam engines, could not understand how every James, Henry, and every diesel on the island were somehow exhausted and happy at the same time.

Later that same year
Flying Scotsman showed up on what would turn out to be his last railtour before his overhaul. Not realizing what he’d started way back in 1979, he jokingly asked if Henry and Bear had ever done anything in regards to their relationship.
When they and seemingly every other diesel on the Island regaled him with wedding stories he almost burst a boiler tube!

2007
Pip managed to convince the paint shop staff to paint huge fire breathing dragons on herself and Emma for Christmas.
Within two weeks all the other diesels had their own respective animals painted somewhere on their bodies.
After a while, they all started to notice that the animals seemed to be in different places on different days... Daphne's Lion and Wendell's Cobra would even swap locomotives sometimes - not that they'd ever admit it!
After an even longer while they noticed that an identical Bear and Tiger had ended up on Henry and James - despite neither of them having gone near the paint shop in months!
Richard Hatt has asked why this happened, but nobody has yet said anything close to the truth. It may be because they don’t know themselves...

2017
A certain Class 5 diesel convinced her driver to hang some mistletoe over the turntable.
Everything was going well until Donald chuffed in unexpectedly and saw Henry and Bear under it.
A lot of explaining was required.

2020
Wendell loved Christmas, and had spent every year since the early 90′s covered in lights and pulling the N.W.R.’s holiday train. In more recent years Daphne also joined him, and they usually spent a few days in the first or second week of January getting the lights removed and their paint touched up.
This year, heavy traffic in early January meant that they couldn’t make it to the works until late on the 28th, and spent all of the next day getting de-lighted and touched up. They went to sleep eager to go to work the next morning...

Wendell woke up with a start. What a dream that was! It felt so realistic, and...
55 010 was staring at him, eyes wide to the point of bulging out of her face.
“What?” He asked, trying to shake off the feeling of strangeness - in his dream, they were married, but engines can’t get married - can they?
“Wendell,” She said quietly, her voice shaking. “I just had the most amazing dream.”
“Really?” Maybe they could compare notes, Wendell wondered. Maybe in her dream they were all brightly coloured crime fighting action heroes.
“We were married.” She said after a moment.
Wendell felt the world go fuzzy around him. The last thirty-nine years of his life flashed before his eyes in some sort of visual stereo - one side sad and depressed, the other side...
“Daphne?!” He gasped as he returned to reality.
That was all the confirmation the big Deltic needed. “It wasn’t a dream!” She cried joyously.
“It was,” Wendell said, his brows furrowing under a sudden and massive headache. “But it wasn’t. How can it be both?”
“I don’t know and I don’t care.” Daphne/55 010 said, her voice laced with quiet joy. “I have sisters. I have a family. I have you.”
Wendell could feel his mind short circuiting. On one wheel, he was in his shed in the works. It was his home. He’d lived here since the 80′s!
On the other... He lived at the diesel shed in Tidmouth. He’d asked The Fat Controller in 1982 if he could stay there so he could be with his friends - with Daphne. His home was the road between Daphne and Bear in Tidmouth.
Bear. His eyes widened as he thought of the Hymek.
He didn’t know the diesel that well, but - he did. Did he? Was this all a shared dream between him and 010, or was Bear really Henry��s husband? Were Delta and James married? What about Daisy and Mavis? Was 010 actually Daphne? He didn’t know what was real or not anymore.
He looked back at Daphne/010. As much as he wanted to believe it was true - that he really did have thirty years of family and love - but as he looked over at the Deltic and down at his own buffers, he didn’t see the blue-and-gold or black-and-gray of Lion and Cobra Stripes, just the basic Rail Blue of two anonymous British Diesels.
Then...
As he looked at 010/Daphne, her dark blue paint started to muddy and shift before his eyes. Starting at her buffers and moving backwards, a ripple of colour began to work its way across her body. The rail blue and yellow warning panels faded away, leaving a trail of sky blue paint and metallic gold stripes. A roaring lion, standing atop a crushed double arrow, appeared below her cab window.
He would have watched the transformation in more detail, but a sudden and intense itching caused his him to look down at his own body. Where there had previously been blue and yellow was now a dark gloss black with grey stripes. The very hint of a snake's tail could be seen stretching around the corner of his bodywork.
It was over almost as quickly as it begun, and when the two diesels looked back up at each other, they didn’t see Wendell and 55 010, they saw:
“Lion?”
“Cobra?”

The drivers who went to take Wendell and 010 back to the works had no idea why the diesels were crying like babies, but assumed it was due to the outrageous paint schemes the works had elected to cover them in. They were in no mood for shenanigans, and coupled up the engines and left before the works staff could notice and ask questions.  
In a remarkable parallel to the 1981 of their dreams, Wendell hauled an unpowered Daphne and a rake of coaches from the works down to Tidmouth in the predawn light of winter. They passed Abbey, who shouted hello from the electric branch, and passed Edward, who stared at their paint in utter bafflement.
The train arrived in Tidmouth, but there was no Fat Controller to meet them that day, so they left the coaches at the platform for The Limited and departed for the diesel shed.
Wendell felt another headache come on as he rolled up to the concrete-and-steel structure. With only Bear and Delta permanently in Tidmouth, The Fat Controller hadn’t built the shed until Pip and Emma arrived in 2000, knocking down an old brick warehouse to do so.
But, with Daphne and Wendell, that old brick building had been spruced up and expanded in the 80′s. Looking at the building, Wendell felt woozy as his mind layered an image of the cozy warehouse overtop of the sleek shed.
“There’s supposed to be windows there.” Daphne whispered as she looked at the blank wall of the shed.  
Wendell grimaced as he looked up. That blank concrete wall was in no way special, but at the same time, the light that streamed in through bank of windows set into the brick had been the source of many arguments - nobody wanted to be the one in that road because the morning sun was at just the right angle to shine into the eyes of whoever was parked under them.
But that wall was blank specifically because the architects had realized that - in 1999.
But it was an old shed - from the 1920's, right?
Wendell grimaced and hoped that his mind would pick something and stick to it.
Arriving in the shed to the sound of Genesis drifting through the doors - dream or no dream, Henry had apparently still infected them with his prog rock obsession - the men first shunted Daphne onto one road before putting Wendell next to her,  powering off off his motor and scarpering to the staff canteen and its coffee maker, leaving the two diesels outside.
Their presence was noticed after Bear’s voice drifted out of the shed with a command to turn off the voice activated speaker. In the silence, the quiet pinging of Wendell’s cooling engine was heard, drawing eyes to the outside.
“What the hell are you painted like that for?” Called BoCo from inside the sheds. “And who are you?” He asked Daphne.
“Hi Jaguar, it’s so good to see you.” Daphne evidently did not care that BoCo had no idea who she was.
“Good morning!” Said Wendell, trying to figure out how on earth he was going to explain this. “We had a doozy of a dream last night!”
The other diesels poked out of the doors to gawp at the oddly-painted engines.
Delta in particular looked like she wanted to say something, looking down at her own stripes before looking at Daphne’s.
“You look like you could be my big... sister...” She didn’t make it all the way through her sentence before her jaw dropped and her eyes glazed over. Wendell imagined that this is what he looked like earlier that morning.
“You...” Delta was on the verge of tears. “You were at my wedding. You all were!”
“Your what? You know this engine?” BoCo was more confused than ever.
“Yes! And so do you! We all do!”
“Delta, I have never... met...” BoCo stared in shock after his eyes glazed over for a long moment. “Oh soot and oil... Daphne?!”
And so it went through the other engines, who all suddenly remembered.
“How?!” Bear eventually managed. “How did this - what?”
He was cut off as his paint rippled and changed, an effect that quickly rolled across the other engines. From within the shed, Emma and Pip swore loudly as their NWExpress livery roiled and shifted from blue and yellow to black, white and red. BoCo grimaced as his BR green suddenly became a lot more American. Bear grinned unconsciously, suddenly remembering how well Henry had taken his stripes last time.
Within a few minutes, the disparate group of diesels were gone, replaced with the members of the Non-Standard Survivors Society.
Daphne, who watching this happen with no small amount of glee, squealed with happiness.

In the station, Henry and Daisy were congratulating Richard Hatt on his recent promotion to assistant controller of the railway. As they spoke, both engines kept one eye on the diesel shed in the distance - two new diesels in some absolutely ludicrous paint schemes were parked in front of the diesel shed, and a commotion was quietly audible, much to their consternation.
Richard eventually took notice of the new engines as well, and took a long moment to try and figure out why the original Deltic prototype was on his railway. A gasp drew him back to the engines on the platform, both of whom now looked like they’d seen a ghost.

Richard wanted to investigate the sudden faraway look in the engine’s eyes, but remembered what usually happened to him when he asked the engines personal questions.
As he left the platform, he noted with some amount of confusion the elegantly-painted bear that was on Henry’s cab side. It definitely hadn’t been there when he walked up.
He turned around to ask Henry about it, when James raced into the station, a wild look in his eyes.
“Henry!” He demanded. “What just happened to me?!” The pouncing Tiger painted on the side of his tender gave some idea as to the “what” he was talking about.
Richard turned and fled for his office. The pub didn’t open until noon, and he was not about to deal with any new earthshattering revelations sober.

The Edwin Fox was built at Sulkeali on the Ganges Delta, India in 1853, as a Moulmein Trader, she was the last of her type. Similar to those built for the East India Company she was constructed exclusively of teak and saul timber in just 9 months. She was sold to Sir George Hodgkinson of London prior to her launching and he named her Edwin Fox.
On her maiden voyage to London via the Cape of Good Hope she carried 10 passengers and a general cargo. Less than a year later she was purchased by Duncan Dunbar and was immediately put into service with the British Government as a troop ship for the Crimean War, reputedly carrying such illustrious passengers as Florence Nightingale.
After the fall of Sebastopol she was refitted out to again carry civilian passengers and general cargo.
Edwin Fox made her first voyage to the Southern Ocean on 14 February 1856 carrying 5 passengers and some cargo arriving in Melbourne on 28th May.
The Edwin Fox then spent a period trading between various Eastern ports culminating in a contract to carry 300 coolies from what was then Swatow in China to Cuba where they were destined to work in the cane fields. Large amounts of extra water had to be taken on this voyage.
In 1858 she was again chartered by the British Government to transport convicts to Freemantle in Western Australia.
Between 1858 and 1872 Edwin Fox was used primarily for 2 purposes:
to sail between England and the East as a trader carrying a range of cargoes including several trips to India carrying a pale ale earning her the nickname of “Booze Barge”.
as a troop ship again, making several voyages with troops from the UK to Bombay. The return voyages were with casualties: many dying en route. As far as is known these voyages ended Edwin Fox’s role as a troop transport.
Duncan Dunbar died in 1863 and Edwin Fox was sold to Gallatly, Hankey & Company of London.
In 1873 the Edwin Fox was chartered by Shaw Savill Company to carry immigrants to New Zealand from England.
She was to make 4 such voyages carrying a total of 751 passengers to the new colony. A number of ‘incidents’ around this period have been recorded in the ships log.
On the first voyage she ran into a storm in the Bay of Biscay and was severely damaged.
The ships crew got into some of the spirits being carried as cargo and created a significant amount of turmoil.
The ships doctor was killed having been impaled on a metal rod.
A seaman was killed trying to secure one of the ships boats
and a young girl was swept overboard only to be swept back onboard again by the next wave.
There were many other incidents on subsequent voyages.
By the 1880’s the age of steam had arrived and the sheep industry in New Zealand was booming. Edwin Fox was fitted out as a floating freezer hulk and was used as such in several South Island ports.
She was finally towed to Picton arriving 12th January, 1897 where she has remained ever since initially as a freezer ship, later as a coal hulk and now preserved under cover as a prominent tourist attraction.
