Chess Olympiad in Chennai
The Chess Olympiad is a biannual celebration of and competition for chess players all over the world that is organized by the Fédération Internationale des Échecs, which is better known as the International Chess Federation in English and often referred to as FIDE. In preparation for every Chess Olympiad, FIDE picks a host country where the Olympiad will be held. For the 44th edition of its Chess Olympiad, FIDE has honoured Chennai this year with the opportunity of hosting the Olympiad in India for the very first time! It will be held from July 28th to August 10th, 2022.
In addition to India being the Olympiad’s host for the very first time, the 44th Chess Olympiad will also be the biggest event that Chennai will host, following only the championship that took place between Indian chess Grand Master Viswanathan Anand and Grand Master Magnus Carlsen. Chennai is seemingly the perfect location for this edition of the Chess Olympiad as it is well known as the ‘mecca of Chess’ and also is the home of not only the 15th world champion GM Viswanathan Anand but also the talented up-and-comer, GM Praggnanandhaa R.
The Olympiad was originally supposed to be held in Russia. However, following the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, this decision was repealed and a new host country was sought for. Bharat Singh Chauhan, Secretary for the All-India Chess Federation (AICF; which is affiliated to FIDE) made all the moves necessary to bring the 44th edition of the Chess Olympiad home, to India. Communicating with Arkady Dvorkovich (President of FIDE), gaining the support of Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, and the backing of 92 crore sanctioned by the Tamil Nadu government; all these things showed the preparedness with which AICF Secretary and Olympiad Director Bharat Singh Chauhan brought home this virtuous opportunity for Chennai. As has been rightfully stated by Chauhan, it will be a “historic press conference” and a “big moment for all of us”.
To quote Chauhan directly, “It’s a great honour for India to host such a big event. This shows the position of the country in the chess world. I’m thankful to everyone involved who supported us in making this happen. This is a historic step and I believe it will take Indian chess to greater heights”. The townsman of Chennai and Indian chess GM Viswanathan Anand himself has shown his endorsement of the Olympiad, expressing how excited and honoured he feels about the Olympiad being held in Chennai.
Gathering participation from over 2000 chess players from around the globe, Tamil Nadu’s CM, M.K. Stalin, believes that this assembly of chess players for the prestigious Chess Olympiad will encourage the realization of Tamil Nadu’s dreams in the world of sports. The delight in bringing the Chess Olympiad to India can be sensed in Chauhan’s words, directly quoted from when he declared this thrilling news: “What Athens means for Olympics is how India will be to the chess community,” “It was our dream to bring the Chess Olympiad to India and now this announcement adds not only joy but extreme pride.”
44th Chess Olympiad: Returning Offline, Logo and Thambi, First Torch Relay
Over the years of 2020 and 2021, while the world took a pause and we were confined to our homes, the Chess Olympiad shifted to online mediums so as not to halt operations and continue the competition by adapting to the need of the hour. After two years online, the Chess Olympiad 2022 will bring all of its participants together in one location for a ceremony that will be nothing short of an absolutely grand event! The 44th Chess Olympiad is going to be held at Four Points by Sheraton Mahabalipuram Resort & Convention Centre, situated in Mamallapuram.
M.K. Stalin, the CM of Tamil Nadu, revealed the official logo and mascot for the 44th Chess Olympiad on Thursday, June 9th. “Thambi” (meaning ‘younger brother’) is a knight dressed in the traditional attire of Tamil Nadu that is veshti (dhoti), and a shirt that reads ‘Chess Believe’, with joined hands, greeting all guests and participants with a warm ‘Vanakkam’.
CM Stalin also expressed his gratitude by saying, “Hosting the 44th Chess Olympiad is an absolute honour for Chennai and all our officials are putting assiduous efforts to make it a grand and memorable success in the history of Indian Sports”.
One of the most auspicious activities for the Chess Olympiad will take place in its 44th edition, which is the first Olympic-style Torch Relay that shall be a tradition for every following Olympiad henceforth. FIDE has stated that Chennai would be the best place to mark the beginning of this tradition as it is, after all, the Mecca of Chess.
In relation to this decision, Arkady Dvorkovich, President of FIDE), can be directly quoted in saying, “This initiative will help in popularizing the game of chess and galvanising the support of fans across the world. Starting from the next edition of the Olympiad, in line with the traditions of the Olympic Games, the torch will travel across all continents visiting FIDE member territories, ultimately culminating in the host country and city ahead of the opening of the Chess Olympiad.”
Chess Olympiad 2022: Schedule, Format, Time Control, and Some Familiar Names
While the much anticipated 44th Chess Olympiad begins with its Opening Ceremony on 28th July, to allow all participants to settle in and ready themselves, Round 1 takes place on July 29th, with a one-round-per-day norm throughout the Olympiad.
There is only one rest day, which follows Round 6 of the Olympiad on August 3rd, and is scheduled for the full day of August 4th. After the players have replenished themselves and their skills, they shall prepare themselves for the second half of the Olympiad as August 5th brings on Round 7. Coming to a closure with the final round, Round 11, on the 9th of August, the Olympiad shall see its Closing Ceremony on the same day.
The format for the Olympiad shall have teams consisting of four players and one reserve, while each team shall have a captain, who is allowed to be one of the players. The teams will compete in an 11-round Swiss tournament, the time control being set at 90+30, with 30 minutes added to the clock after move 40.
The players include some prolific names such as Vidit Gujrathi, Praggnanandhaa R., Koneru Humpy, and Tania Sachdev, among the Indian players. GM Viswanathan Anand will mentor the Indian squads throughout the Olympiad. Some world-known names of participants also include GM Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana.

They must follow the rules of cricket or they must avoid doing those restricted actions on the ground. One of the main restrictions in Cricket is the number of players on the ground. There are two teams, and each team has eleven players. If there are more than that players, those teams may be disqualified or it may lead to penalties. The next important restriction is on the equipment we used on the ground like Balls, Stump and wickets, Pitch and etc. So according to the rules and restrictions, the cricket balls' size and weight are also important. so the ball must weigh between 5.5 and 5.75 ounces and its circumference is 8.81 to 9 inches. The ball should be leather and cork core. It ensures the safety of the player and the manner of the game. The pitch also has restrictions we know that the pitch is laid in the center of the field. Now, the restriction on Batsman shots and the way of playing. Batman cannot obstruct the fields while playing and also handle the ball illegally. If they didn't follow then it's considered as out. this mistake reflects on the scoreboard. Cricket rules and restrictions will help the players to maintain their manner and sportsmanship. Top 5 IPL Moments That Defined Cricketing History
The Indian Premier League (IPL) is more than just a cricket tournament. It's a celebration of skill, entertainment, and drama, with every season delivering unforgettable moments. From breathtaking performances to shocking upsets, the IPL has brought cricket fans some of the most iconic moments in the sport’s history. Here, we take a look at the top 5 IPL moments that not only defined the league but also made their mark on cricketing history.
Tumblr media
1. Brendon McCullum's Explosive 158 (2008)*
The inaugural match of the IPL 2008 set the tone for what would become one of the most exhilarating cricket tournaments in the world. Brendon McCullum, playing for Kolkata Knight Riders, took the stage in the very first game and delivered one of the most sensational knocks in IPL history.
In a match against Royal Challengers Bangalore, McCullum smashed an unbeaten 158 runs off 73 balls. His innings, which included 10 sixes and 13 fours, was an absolute game-changer. This explosive performance set the benchmark for power-hitting in the IPL and made it clear that the league was not just about skill, but also about entertainment and explosive batting.
McCullum's knock remains one of the highest individual scores in IPL history, and it is one of those iconic moments that all cricket fans associate with the early days of the IPL. His innings changed the way T20 cricket was played, showing the world that IPL wasn’t just about team spirit, but individual brilliance as well.
2. MS Dhoni's Helicopter Shot and Captaining Brilliance (2008-2023)
When it comes to defining moments in IPL history, one name that constantly comes up is MS Dhoni. Known for his calm demeanor and unmatched leadership, Dhoni’s influence on the IPL is unparalleled. His innovative batting and leadership helped transform Chennai Super Kings into one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL.
Among the many moments, his iconic helicopter shot has left an indelible mark on the IPL. Dhoni used this unique shot to hit sixes with ease, often turning games around in the final overs. Whether it was chasing down a big total or setting one, Dhoni’s tactical brilliance was always evident, leading CSK to multiple titles.
One of the most defining moments came during the 2010 IPL final when Dhoni led Chennai to victory over Mumbai Indians, securing his first IPL trophy as captain. This win cemented his legacy as one of the greatest captains in cricket history. Under Dhoni, Chennai became the most consistent team in the IPL, and his leadership continues to inspire players to this day.

3. The 2016 IPL Final: RCB vs. Sunrisers Hyderabad
The 2016 IPL final between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) remains one of the most memorable matches in IPL history. RCB, led by the explosive Virat Kohli, had been in red-hot form throughout the season. With Kohli in sensational form, scoring 973 runs in the tournament, RCB were favorites to lift the trophy.
However, it was the underdog Sunrisers Hyderabad who clinched the IPL 2016 title. In a tense final, SRH’s bowling attack, led by Ben Cutting and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, put the brakes on RCB’s chase. With some key wickets and tight bowling, SRH restricted RCB to just 200 runs, securing a victory by 8 runs.
This moment marked a turning point for SRH and propelled them into the IPL’s elite group of teams. The win also highlighted the importance of a well-rounded team effort over individual brilliance, as Sunrisers Hyderabad’s balanced squad outperformed the star-studded RCB lineup in the final.
4. Kieron Pollard's Incredible Match-Winning Knock (2019)
Kieron Pollard is known for his finishing abilities and match-winning performances, but the 2019 season of IPL truly elevated him to legendary status. In a thrilling encounter between Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab, Pollard played an unforgettable knock that saw him hit sixes and boundaries in quick succession, changing the course of the game in the final overs.
When Mumbai were struggling at 132/4 in the 16th over, Pollard took control, blasting an unbeaten 83 runs off just 31 balls. His brilliant power-hitting helped Mumbai post a daunting target of 186 runs, which they successfully defended.
Pollard’s match-winning knock wasn’t just about the runs he scored but the manner in which he handled the pressure. His calm demeanor under pressure and ability to perform in the final stages of the game made this one of the most remarkable IPL moments. It was a classic example of how a single player’s performance can turn a match on its head, proving why Pollard is one of the best finishers in the IPL.
5. The 2019 IPL Final: A Thrilling Mumbai Indians Victory
The 2019 IPL final between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) remains one of the closest and most thrilling finals in IPL history. Both teams, led by their charismatic captains Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni, had been dominant throughout the season, and the final lived up to the hype.
Mumbai Indians clinched the title by just 1 run in a nerve-wracking finish. Chennai needed 9 runs off the final over, and it was a last-ball thriller that had fans at the edge of their seats. While MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja fought hard till the very end, the experienced MI bowlers, particularly Jasprit Bumrah, held their nerves and secured a famous win.
This victory marked Mumbai Indians’ fourth IPL title, the most by any team, and solidified their position as the dominant force in IPL history. The match was a perfect encapsulation of the drama and excitement that the IPL is known for, with a thrilling finish that kept fans glued to their screens until the last ball.
Conclusion
The IPL has given us many unforgettable moments, but these top 5 IPL moments stand out as defining events in cricketing history. Whether it’s Brendon McCullum’s explosive debut, MS Dhoni’s leadership, or thrilling final moments like those in the 2019 IPL, these moments remind us why the IPL continues to capture the imagination of millions around the world.
Each of these moments not only shaped the league but also changed the way we view T20 cricket, making the IPL a true spectacle of athleticism, drama, and passion. As we look ahead to future seasons, we can only hope that the IPL continues to deliver moments that will inspire the next generation of cricketers and fans alike.

[ad_1] Praggnanandhaa at the Tata Steel Chess (PC: Tata Steel Chess/X) R Praggnanandhaa had got overshadowed by the exploits of D Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi in 2024. On an epic final day at the Tata Steel chess tournament in Wijk aan Zee, he showed what he is made of by beating Gukesh in tie-breaker to win the first elite event of 2025. It was an eventful and dramatic final round in the quaint town on the northern coast of the Netherlands. Gukesh and Pragg were the joint-leaders and a full point ahead of Nodirbek Abdusattorov. Only if both the Indians lost did the World No. 6 from Uzbekistan stand a chance. Gukesh and Pragg suffered defeats, but Abdusattorov could not score the win he had to against India’s Pentala Harikrishna. After that draw and the setbacks for the Indians, it went to tie-breaker. In the blitz format employed in the tie-breaker, Gukesh won the first game with white. Pragg drew level with white in the next one. In the third game, Pragg clinched the battle between the two Chennai players, following a late error on the part of the recently-crowned world champion. It was a massive moment for Indian chess, considering that two from the country finished in the top two positions in the prestigious event featuring five players from the top 10 in the world. For the Latest Sports News: Click Here BREAKING: Praggnanandhaa R wins the 2025 Tata Steel Masters! A stunning performance in Wijk aan Zee crowns him champion! Congratulations, Pragg!! pic.twitter.com/Xt2Lnw6doq — Tata Steel Chess Tournament (@tatasteelchess) February 2, 2025 Earlier, Gukesh experienced his first defeat after winning the world crown, when he went down to Arjun Erigaisi despite having the white pieces. Arjun was winless after 11 rounds, but had scored a crucial win against Abdusattorov in the 12th. If that handed Gukesh and Pragg an advantage going into the final round, Arjun dented Gukesh’s chances by winning in just 22 moves. The game between Abdusattorov and Harikrishna became vital after that. Had the Uzbek won, he could have forced a three-way tie-breaker. However, one of Gukesh’s seconds in the World Championship campaign, Harikrishna, had other plans. He held Abdusattorov with black pieces, which ensured that he could not catch up with the duo of Gukesh and Pragg. Germany’s Vincent Keymer, another from Gukesh’s team of seconds, made it tougher for Pragg. The 19-year-old was in a slightly inferior position with the black pieces, but had managed to reach a stage where a draw looked likely. Keymer kept pressing and Pragg missed a trick towards the end which meant that he too lost. The tie-breaker could have been mentally crushing for Pragg after the marathon game which lasted over six hours. His defeat in the first blitz game suggested that he was running out of steam. But he summoned that extra ounce of energy and inspiration to stage a comeback and then put it across his friend and schoolmate to register a historic win. RCB is Going to Win the Title: Why IPL 2025 Could Be Their Year
The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have long been one of the most exciting and fan-loved teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL). From near-misses to heartbreaks, the team has has face many ups and downs. However, every season, RCB fans belief that this is the year they’ll finally gonna win their first-ever IPL title. And 2025 season could be their time to shine.
With a mix of seasoned leaders, young talents, and a solid strategy, RCB is more than just a team full of star players—this might be the year when they can win their first tiltle. Here’s why.
1. RCB's Strong Core: The Key Players
For any team to win the title, it needs a strong foundation, and RCB has one built on both experience and flair. Let’s break down the players who could make the difference for RCB in 2025:
Virat Kohli: The heart and soul of RCB for over a decade, Virat’s leadership and batting skills are unmatchable. His recent performances have been good, and his hunger for that first IPL title could push him to greater heights. Whether it’s his aggressive batting or his ability to anchor the innings, Kohli’s experience will be an important thing in pressure situations for RCB.
Rajat Patidar: A destructive middle-order batter, Rajat’s ability to turn a game around with his batting is unmatched. His performances in the previous season shows that he can be RCB’s X-factor for next many years, capable of playing match-winning knocks in the crucial matches of the tournament.
Salt: The opnening of salt has brought much-needed stability to the team. His calm nature, along with his six hitting ability, has given RCB a balance in the top order. As a current wicket keeper of england cricket team, his experience is invaluable, and he’s already proven that he can hit huge sixes.
Bhuvi: A new star for RCB, bhuvi’s consistency with the ball has made him one of the best fast bowlers in the IPL history. Whether it’s a powerplay spell or a death overs spells, bhuvi has become a bowler RCB can depend on in tight situations.
Key New Recruits: With new players in the squad, RCB’s strength is only going to increase. The franchise has invested in youngsters, and their performances in domestic cricket will bring fresh energy to the team. Players like yash dayal (fast bowler) and Rajat Patidar (middle-order batsman) can add depth to the team.
2. Team Strategy and Tactics for Success
It’s not just the players who have changed; RCB’s strategy for 2025 is different too. For the first time in a while, RCB has a well-balanced squad that’s capable of covering all bases.
Balanced Team Composition: In the past, RCB relied too heavily on a few key players like virat,AB and gayle. But in 2025, they have a deep batting lineup, solid bowling options, and the right mix of young talent and experience players. The team can now play good in all conditions, whether it’s a high-scoring match or a low-scoring match.
Key Matchups: RCB’s performance against top teams will be crucial. Their head-to-head record against teams like Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings has often been close, but with a more good strategy, they can turn these losses into wins. Using key players like salt and bhuvi in pressure moments could tilt games in RCB’s favor.
Mentorship and Leadership: Faf du Plessis’ leadership has been a breath of fresh air for RCB, bringing tactical changes and a calm approach to the team’s gameplay. Kohli, who is no longer the captain, still provides valuable insights and guidance to team. This mix of old and new leadership gives RCB the perfect balance of ambition and experience.
3. The IPL 2025 Format: Why This Year is Special for RCB
As IPL is always unpredictable, the 2025 season brings some new unique factors that could work in RCB’s favor.
The IPL Format: If there are any changes in format of  IPL 2025, RCB could be benefited from a group stage system. A tighter group stage, for example, might favor a team like RCB, who has the depth to outplay opposition across multiplle venues.
Home Advantage: Playing in front of their fans at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium is a very good support  for RCB. The Bengaluru crowd is known for its loyal support, and the team's home games have a magical atmosphere with stadium full of red colour. That home advantage could prove to be the key in difficult knockout matches.
4. What RCB Needs to Do to Secure the Title
While RCB has the pieces in place, they still need to bring everything together for a successful IPL season. Here’s what they can do:
Consistency: The key to any title-winning season is consistency. RCB has often failed in crucial moments during previous seasons, but in 2025, they need to play at their best in the full tournament. They must avoid injuries and make sure that their top players remain in form for the full IPL season.
Adaptability: IPL conditions vary from venue to venue. RCB must be able to adapt their game as per the pitch, weather, and opposition team strengths. Their squad has good balance in both batting and bowling, and it’s important to use those strengths wisely in every match.
Team Morale and Chemistry: The strong team chemistry RCB has built in recent years is something that should not be underestimated. The understanding among players will help them through the ups and downs of the whole season.
5. Fan Support and the RCB ‘Never Give Up’ Spirit
What makes RCB different from many other teams is their fans. The “RCBians” are most loyal and passionate supporters in the IPL history. The team feeds off the energy and excitment of their fans, and there’s no better feeling than playing in front of a full red Chinnaswamy Stadium. RCB’s never-give-up attitude is comes by the belief that the title can be ours, and their fanbase is always their for their team.
6. Conclusion: RCB’s Time to Shine
It’s been a long time for RCB, and they’ve come close many times to winning the title. However, with a solid squad, strong leadership, and the right strategies, IPL 2025 could be the year they finally lift the trophy. RCB’s combination of form, teamwork, and fan support force them to win the maiden IPL title.
Will this be the year the Royal Challengers Bangalore finally lift the IPL trophy? We’ll have to wait and watch. But one thing is for sure—RCB’s title chase is going to be one of the most exciting stories in the history of IPL!

ICC Champions Trophy 2025: 'Will Miss Playing in India' - Fakhar Zaman Fumes at PCB
Tumblr media
Champions Trophy 2025: Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman has an old connection with the Champions Trophy. The left-hander made his name in international cricket through this tournament's edition played in 2017 when he helped Pakistan win a historic title.
Eight years later, Zaman is back in the mix for the Champions Trophy, however, his place in the squad is still not confirmed. The Champions Trophy 2025 has faced many controversies which were mostly based around India's travel to Pakistan.
With the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirming India not traveling to Pakistan for the tournament, Fakhar Zaman is disappointed but is also excited at the same time to face them in Dubai.

Fakhar Zaman speaks on India not traveling to Pakistan
While speaking to Sports Tak, Fakhar Zaman was asked about India's refusal to visit Pakistan for the Champions Trophy 2025. He claimed that the Indian team would have received an even grander welcome than what Pakistan received when they traveled to India for the ODI World Cup in 2023.
“If India had come to Pakistan, we would’ve given them an even grander welcome and hospitality but they are not coming. It's fine, but we’re excited to play against them in Dubai,” Fakhar said.
Pakistan travelled to India for the ODI World Cup in 2023 when they played most of their matches in Hyderabad. Out of all the venues, Pakistan played only in Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Kolkata.
They had a disappointing tournament and finished fifth in the points table. They even lost to Afghanistan in what turned out to be a shocking result. As a result, the Men in Green failed to qualify for the semi-finals.

We will miss playing in India - Fakhar Zaman
While speaking on the same platform, Fakhar Zaman admitted that he will miss playing on Indian soil as the team enjoyed a good time in the country during the World Cup 2023. He was also pleased with the kind of support that he received in India during the tournament.
“Yes, we will definitely miss (playing in India) as we enjoyed a lot during our visit there for the ODI World Cup 2023. We were delighted with the kind of support and the hospitality we got there,” Zaman added.
According to the latest agreement between the ICC, BCCI, and PCB, India and Pakistan will not be required to travel to each other's country for the ICC events for the current cycle. While the other teams will play their matches in the host nation, India and Pakistan will play their matches through a hybrid model in any other country.

Fakhar Zaman to be selected in Pakistan's Champions Trophy squad?
India and Pakistan are the only two teams in the Champions Trophy not to have announced their final squads so far. Pakistan is believed to have submitted its preliminary squad but will trim down the squad to 15 players by February 10.
Fakhar Zaman is in line to be selected for the Champions Trophy despite not having played an ODI since the ODI World Cup 2023. Zaman was earlier dropped from Pakistan's ODI squad for the Australia tour after he had criticized the PCB's decision to drop Babar Azam.
Pakistan will open their campaign against New Zealand on February 19 at Karachi. The Men in Green will then face arch-rivals India in Dubai on February 23. They will face Bangladesh in their final group match on February 27 at Rawalpindi.

Quimper Ch F: Sascha Gueymard Wayenburg [Q] def. Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-7(3), 6-1, 6-2 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
While the first set's partial servefest ended in P-H. Herbert taking it thanks to his point construction, Sascha's aggressive and paced play started to question the former's balance under pressure. This became more evident when the latter's shot winners contributed to some chances, even to break the former's serves as he got rushed as this match developed. By then, Sascha generated twice the break points P-H. Herbert had (4 to 2), converting 100% of them in the last two sets.
Furthermore, the said dominance in the last two sets helped Sascha's outstanding serving percentage in this match. Scoring 12 aces than the veteran Frenchman's 7, the younger Frenchman won 80% of his first serve points, 16% more than P-H. Herbert as he tried to avoid more troubles. Sascha also had the slight edge on his second serves by winning 57% of his second serve points, 1% higher than the latter, whose vulnerable second serves only hampered his balance right after the first-set tie-breaker.
This marked Sascha's maiden Challenger title, the first one this year to win a title as a qualifier. To add, this propelled his rank closing into the Top 250 for the first time, reaching a career-high of 253 by the end of the tournament. For some reason, Sascha will partake in the Chennai Challenger qualifying round for the upcoming week, while P-H. Herbert will head to the Lille Challenger for the same week. Could also be a neat week, at best!
