To my knowledge, the kid from IWBTG is the only character from (as in their first appearance) a fangame (i’d personally define “fangame” as a game that prominently features copyrighted works the dev doesnt own the rights to)

(Its 2, the kid -super meat boy-> steve -smash ultimate-> ryu btw)

So my question is, am I wrong about the kid being the only character like this? Is there another character who comes from a fangame (by my definition) but still has a ryu number?

Putting aside that my interpretation of "official"/"commercial" allows for other IWBTG-only characters like the titular Guy, Flumpty Bumpty may be along the lines of what you're thinking. Henry Stickmin if you squint, maybe.

From doing a bit of digging, you could probably make the case for Maybell from Thought of Dolls, whose first video game appearance is in the doujin game Touhou Unreal Mahjong, a commercial product on account of ZUN's famously permissive attitude toward fan work.

HSiFS sold ~21k on Steam! (Go us!) Do you know how much of a cut Steam takes? And a good guess on how much Mediascape will probably take?

A quick Google search indicates that Steam takes a 30% cut out of all sales, which is supposedly a relatively good deal. So ZUN and Mediascape would take home 70%.

Now, I couldn’t even begin to speculate the exact terms of the deal ZUN has with Mediascape, but I do know he’s old friends with the President of the company, Nozomu Ezaki (also known as D.N.A.). Ezaki has been involved in Touhou doujin games since forever, in particular the rare few that actually have involvement from ZUN. For example, ZUN composed a theme for Rinnosuke in D.N.A.’s Touhou Unreal Mahjong, which has since become his de facto official theme.

So basically Mediascape isn’t some faceless corporation siphoning money from ZUN’s hard work, it’s ZUN’s best friend trying to start up a business with ZUN’s cooperation. So I have to imagine they’re each getting a good deal out of it.

what of this “shanghai” and “mahjong”  do they involve tiles ? the long nights of research continues still it would seem~~~

This is a screenshot from Touhou Gensou Mahjong (No Infomaniac in it, unfortunately), and the Yukari you see is part of a player plate on the table that shows their name and character.

However! In Touhou Unreal Mahjong, one of the previous games, the 1 Sou tile has Mystia on it!!
