Postcards from Snagglepuss
They say "if you can drive a car--"
ALONG THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER NORTH OF DUBUQUE, IOWA: And just be grateful that, in anchoring our houseboat near certain railroad tracks on the Wisconsin side for the night, nothing serious managed to ensue with the passage of numerous freight trains ... or did it, especially in the sleep department?
But at any rate, Bristlehound explained over the morning bottles of Boost (that's a meal-replacement drink we're having for breakfast) that the interest he and Dum-Dum had in going the houseboating route on the Mississippi was one of getting laid back and just being at ease. "For some reason," as the onetime Faithful Sheepdog Protector of Lambsy explained, "the expression on the river about 'if you can drive a car, you can drive a houseboat' must be all the more true."
"Once you get the hang of it," Huckleberry Hound remarked.
And what could be more fascinating than the sheer freshness of a late spring-segueing-into-summer's day, a gentle sort of breeze blowing through the river valley, the bluffs providing a spectacle unto their own ... and no less than Touché Turtle "himself" on a deck chair on the front deck, air horn at the ready, yet still jaunty-looking in that plumed cap of his.
Somehow, the fascination of the river brings out something of the Tom Sawyer in all of us--or can it?
Over some limeade we were sharing, Touché Turtle made an Interesting Admission: "The idea you may have gathered from the opening title scenes of our flicktoons, about me going into battle with lightning--how I managed to survive it without becoming roasted turtle, or even turtle soup for that matter, and with a bent-tip foil such as I have, practically amazes me as much as Dum-Dum."
Which brought out the laughs.
And yet, one especially challenging sort of challenge in taking the houseboat route is managing to survive the wake from a rather massive collation of barges being pushed by a diesel barge tow. Which can get to be not only sizable, but can also require some stamina just managing to stay clear of such carrying the likes of grain, coal, crushed limestone, petroleum even. Especially with Bristlehound, Huck and yours truly sharing the steering duties and Dum-Dum monitoring the marine emergency radio channel (VHF channel 16) and the small craft radio channel (VHF channel 9), notwithstanding Touché trying to be as discreet as possible in emergencies ("Touché," Dum-Dum advised as we were getting underway back in Dubuque, "try not to overdo it on the swordplay; I may need to get a hold of you quickly in the cicumstances!").
Still, even on the river, chivalry has to have a place. Even over peanut butter sandwiches on whole wheat bread, and the peanut butter being of the sort where the oil has to be mixed in.

BT Redux, FLaG Relance, and the Visions Behind Them
So one of the things I’ve been learning on this journey of reinventing myself and my skills is the concept of vision. Or rather, why having one is pretty important.
I admit, when I first started writing stories, I just thought of, “This would be awesome to write out!” Which would explain some of my crazier stories during middle and high school (which I still read from time to time to remind myself of my progress, and because of nostalgia!).
But since I’ve started making reboots of my larger works, I realize that if I want them to succeed, I need to have a clear, concrete vision of where I want the stories to go. Having a vision for something is just as important as doing it, because it gives you a clear direction.
And nowhere do I need that direction more than in the reboots of two of my bigger stories—Blazin’ Trails and For Love and Glory.
For Blazin’ Trails, it really just started out as a quick idea I had, and then it turned into multiple ideas. It wasn’t really supposed to be anything other than an outlet/story dump thing for Ricochet Rabbit and Droop-a-Long, but that changed drastically when my buddy Vulaan Kulaas and I started incorporating story arcs, and I realized that what we envisioned for the story then wasn’t working with the way the story was going now. I had envisioned a Gunsmoke like story with some Hanna-Barberian elements, which was obvious in some chapters. Adding purely serious stories just wouldn’t cut it in the current Blazin’ Trails, not to mention the timeline was all out of wack. Add in the new characters (which both me and VK were creating all the time, haha), and it was a crap show. For a while, writing this gave me some stress because I felt like I was a failure, promising all these cool plot lines and not delivering them in the next update.
The original For Love and Glory was kinda similar, but it differs in that I kinda had an outline for where I wanted to go with it. I was inspired by a comment that questioned how Toosh got his start as a hero, and I decided to answer that question with a DARK AND GRITTY story—to make him a flawed, yet relatable character, which is a good idea in concept, but I admit fell flat in execution. I actually did want to make it a full series, but the lack of response was disheartening, which made me falsely believe that the story wasn’t worth sharing. It’s why I never posted the sequels to the original, since I figured that nobody would read it. I questioned if people would really care, or if it was worth writing content for the two characters. Plus, looking back at the old story made me feel like certain things weren’t explained and the world building was incredibly poor. And unlike with Ric, I didn’t really get the hang of writing Toosh (Dum, though, was easier.) which kinda showed in the writing. Honestly, I was ready to give up on the story, even though a rewrite was always on the table.
Two things happened, though, that convinced me to not give up on these two works.
There was no really big epiphany with Blazin’ Trails, though. Vulaan Kulaas and I were talking about how the story needs to be changed, and she helped me to come up with the name, some plot lines, and of course, introduced lots of original characters. I went ahead and started changing up some plots, picking the most important events from the first story and cutting or consolidating the rest and cutting or revamping some characters. And with the new ideas that VK was giving me, I felt my creative mojo come back. I was now adding more stories and better character development. The “guest stars” actually had important roles! And now I’m spending more time on the wiki than I am on Tumblr, much to my buddy’s amusement XD
Then, I had a few silly ideas that fantasy elements could go into this story, and then they just stuck. And then I wrote it, and realized that the fantasy elements were just right for the new story I wanted to go with. And then I realized I’d have to redo characters’ backstories, personalities, and even the whole world. A Princess Connect/Symphogear-like story with some Hanna-Barberian elements would be awesome to write…but it wouldn’t cut with the original “DARK AND GRITTY” vision of the original. I feel like I’m finally getting a hold of Touché’s voice, and slowly but surely, some more details about the world will be added. And then of course, not helping is my current obsession with my OTPs for the story, Touché and Edith and Cat and Dum.
My vision for Blazin’ Trails Redux is a story that gives Ricochet and Droop-a-Long, as well as the large cast that supports them, the proper Western that they deserve.
My vision for For Love and Glory Relance, is to create, essentially, the best Touché Turtle story around, one that gives both him and Dum-Dum the proper story they deserve.
Now that I have a clear vision for what I want to do for both of these stories, I’ve been working on them full force (well, more the former than the latter). Who knows, I may or may not create a separate side blog specifically for FLaG, LOL.
Either way, I must admit, I am SO hyped to write both of these!

21/?? Childhood TV Shows You Should Watch
Title: Touche Turtle and Dum Dum
Seasons: 1
Episodes: 52
Run Time: 7 Mins
Original Air Date: September 3, 1962 - August 26, 1963
Synopsis:
Touché Turtle and his sheepdog sidekick Dum Dum were a pair of heroic fencers who battle villains and heroically save kings, queens, and others in distress. Touché was the brave leader. Dum Dum was more of a simple-minded follower.
During the run of the show, Touché Turtle used a standard fencing foil as a weapon. Though not particularly bright, he was an accomplished fencer and could hold his own against other sword-fighting opponents.
The series did not follow any lasting timeline or continuity. Touché had adventures in the Old West and in the Middle Ages, as well as battling villains during the modern era of the 1960s.
My Rating: 6/10
My Reasoning:
This is again another underrated and kind of forgotten-about show. It might have to do with the extremely short run time and that it doesn't quite have a following. I think it could have really gotten somewhere had more effort been put into it. That being said, I vaguely remember it, and from what I do remember I liked it.
I think having it set in different times and places and not following a set timeline or anything is kind of unique but also I don't remember it ever being explained as to how lol. I guess it doesn't really matter though. Either way, I think the characters were likeable and you should at least watch a little bit of it.

Don Gutierrez
More Hanna-Babera OCs after so long? WHAAAAAT?! XD
This is Catalina’s father, the venerable Don Joaquin Gutierrez, who nearly suffered the same fate as Sebastian Lièvre (Edith’s dad) in being a posthumous character. I basically went against that idea, lol, because coming up with his personality and heritage was so fun that I figured it’d be better to keep him alive. It was both fun and challenging to come up with his character—at the time I created him, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was pretty much on everyone’s minds, and I didn’t want him to be a copy and paste of Puss. I decided to model him after a few other original characters of mine from other series unrelated to BT to make him his own character, and amongst the FLaG OCs, he’s one of my favorites ^^
A little bit about Don: he was born into a rich military family until reading about Sebastian’s adventures made him realize that his true life’s calling was to be a hero who helped people. He dropped out of military school and decided to follow his idol’s steps in becoming a hero, although joining the same convent that Sebastian joined led to him being exiled from his home country, never to return. He would eventually take up hero work again, this time in the Ozarks, where the people were not only cut off from the outside world but distrustful of foreigners. His work would eventually lead him to meet a rough and tumble frontiers woman named Dixie, whom he rescued from nearly getting killed, and eventually fell in love with. Confrontations with Punkin’s father (Dixie’s ex-husband) resulted in them “losing” Cat, something that affected him for years, as he fell into depression. They’d eventually marry, and have another child, Einar, but the “loss” of Catalina is still a dark spot in his life. However, his daughter not only survived Peter’s attempt, but is following in his footsteps—namely, to search for her family.
He’s kind of a mixture of Toosh, Edith and Tristan in terms of personality—he has a slight arrogance yet a burning heart for justice, like Touché; a youthful yet grounded spirit like Tristan; and a loving heart and mischievous personality like Edith. Just don’t piss him off. He will find you and he WILL make you regret EVER crossing his path.
…I know I said I’d write a little bit, but I basically ended up putting in his whole story XD
Enjoy!

Now tell me this isn't the sort of houseboat Bristlehound and Dum-Dum couldn't be imagined taking things easy on the Mississippi River during the summer, with no less than Touché Turtle making an occasional visit.

Postcards from Snagglepuss
Talk about Touché Turtle setting up a challenge!
Your typically crisp Wisconsin autumnal afternoon. The fall colour is starting to change some, but within due time, things can expect to get a little more noticeable. Not to mention the mornings starting to get cool enough to get the heater on some and soup and chili to be more or less the norm.
Which, at Crazy Claws' retreat beside the legendary waters of Artificial Lake Delton, meant something of an interesting little afternoon trying out the fencing schtick with the help of no less than Touché Turtle and his canine compadre, Dum-Dum. In fact, it was the canine who suggested teaching me a few points about fencing, followed by some light-hearted sparring with the somewhat well-meaning, if screwy, turtle forever ahead of himself, it just seemed.
Even if Touché's foil was bent close to the tip; as he explained it to me once over coffee, he purchased it on the cheap from a Hollywood theatrical prop house.
It may have taken a bit of goading after lunch this particular afternoon, but with Crazy Claws, Yakky and Chopper and Pixie and Dixie looking on in some bewilderment, yours truly received a few well-placed pointers from canine and tortuga explaining some of the basic points of fencing technique. Which, to this lion, turned out being rather different than anything he was aware of (and even though I'm right-handed, for some reason, Dum-Dum was able to find a foil which was balanced equally for both hands; Touché, for his part, can vary his fencing technique to work with either hand, depending on circumstances).
Basically, the techniques Dum-Dum and yours truly practiced were those of the lunge (drawing your foil towards the opponent), the parry (trying to counter the opponent's lunge, hopefully by getting the foil out of his hand) and the parry-riposte (which can easily get to be comically theatrical at turns); at any rate, the aim is to have the foil touch the upper body of your opponent (expect the face, arms or hands).
No El Kabong am I, mind you, but after some practice lunges with Dum-Dum, it was time to put my paces unto Touché himself.
"En garde"--crouching slightly, foil upward, feet flat on the ground, knees bent, weight on the upper leg ...
"Allez!"
Which was pretty crazy, drawing forth my foil in a lunge upon Touché, whereupon, for some reason, Touché's foil slipped from his hand. Perhaps it was the sweat and anxiety on his end that made him sense what was up. Yet Touché "himself" acknowledged I did manage to attempt a good fight, short though it was. Non-professional it may have been, but, as Touché was to explain over grilled-cheese-and-ham sandwiches and tomato soup that evening, "Snagglepuss, I have to admit, couldn't have tried harder with such a teacher as Dum-Dum!"
"And I won't blame you, Touché, for having cold feet in any event."

One small step for me!
Haven't had a lot of time to write or even talk about my project, but I have been sneaking some writing in here and there. I did miss the kickoff for NaNo, but that's alright. As long as I got some words down, I'm good 😊👍
I may or may not share what I'm writing when I get a chance.
