On this week’s The #NOLADrinks Show – link in bio – we chat with Dale DeGroff (at left) and Julie Reiner (at right). Among other things, we discuss the recent Tales of the Cocktail “Toast to HerStory” cocktail competition put on by Marie Brizard. Dale and Julie were judges and chat about the winning drink, “The Songbird of Manzanar” by Jena Lane Ellenwood (center). Her cocktail was inspired by a friend’s grandmother who was a prisoner at the Manzanar internment camp during World War II. She was known for her beautiful voice and that inspired the cocktail’s name. Her granddaughters shared a jar of her preserved ume plums with Jena Lane and her winning drink, fittingly, uses umeboshi plum vinegar in the recipe. Congrats, Jena!   Here's her recipe:   3 dashes ginger bitters (Hella Bitters) 3 drops umeboshi plum vinegar (EdenSoy) 1 oz Marie Brizard Yuzu liqueur 1.5 oz Amas gin .5 oz Quintinye Blanc Royal Vermouth   Stir all ingredients in a mixing glass with ice and strain into a chilled Nick & Nora glass. Tales of the Cocktail was epic again this year and we were super excited to partner with @windsorcourt to spend our week enjoying all of their amenities and mix up some cocktails at out Slingin' in the Summertime pop-up along with @tequilatromba in their beautiful space. I was slinging drinks all night and didn't stop to take any photos so I was lucky to get the first image at the end of the night before we wrapped, though unfortunately so many great people had already come and gone who we wish we could have had join us in the celebratory photo. Tales Day 5 was another one full of learning, tasting, networking and hugs. Started with a vodka and caviar tasting. Day 1 started with a quick lunch before Toast to Tales and an Italian Spirirs seminar. Then popups around the French Quarter featuring Don Q and Jungle Bird Bar, Q Mixers, Tequila, Absinthe and ended with Ode to the Bowl Diageo portfolio and something that brought me so much pleasure - a huge, Mexican street corner style fruit cup complete with fresh squeezed lime, Tajin and Chamoy!
