Mod opinion: I haven't heard of the book before and romances aren't my typical genre, but I do always enjoy hearing about sweet trans romances even if I personally won't read them.

The Blue Pool, Torwood.

This mysterious pool has been on my radar for a while and is part of my charity steps challenge for Maggie’s Cancer Centres, the total steps today are 28,362, which equates to about 22.3 km or almost 14 miles. My running total is 253,791, about 86 miles.

20-feet in diameter and filled with a varying level of what was once, surprisingly blue water, the colour has changed over the years to more of, what I would describe as turquoise. 

The most likely origin of the pool is that it was an open air shaft leading to a mine that had been covered, although alternate theories such as it being used as an industrial dye vat were also proposed.

The last time I tried to find this there was nobody else around to ask, but lockdown means everyone is a walker, I asked a few folk in passing and found it quite easily.

The path is uneven, muddy, and at times, I popped over the small wall that runs for most of the track and found a way along without having to get stuck in the mud, I eventually found a clearing over the wall, but was still not sure if this was it as the pool is not visible from the track. I saw two lassies lying a distance away and thought that it must be what I was looking for.

I spoke to the lassies and they said it was drinkable, I laughed and one went over and cupped some water in her hands and started drinking it, they said had been visiting it for years and drunk it many times. I gave it a try and it is very drinkable, no real tastes, just normal good Scottish water!  It's not one of those supposed bottomless pools and bottoms out at about 12 foot.

If you are thinking about finding it nearby Torwood Castle is on google maps head right at the castle, after you’ve had a good look at it, obviously. You’ll find a small gate on the left with a lane running off it, just keep walking until you see a clearing on your right. Oh and there’s a two thousand year old Broch in the area as well, so you have the pool, a castle and a Broch, pics of those to come.

An opportunity to have look at the interior of Torwood Castle. As part of a local walk we met Gary who is the resident Caretaker who invited us in for a look around. Also interesting see the recently discovered Roman Well in the grounds nearby. This month was weird. There were a small number of definite picks and a lot of weird maybe choices, so bear with me.

THE FOR SURES:

Lazare: Continued Investigation Concerning the Phantom of the Opera by K. E. Torwood is interestingly actually framed by the idea of Leroux tracking down the Phantom after the events of the first novel in order to investigate and chronicle his continued actions. The ongoing story involves the Phantom forming a relationship with a young street mime, for once not a woman.

Phantom by Kristine Kathryn Rusch is a mystery/horror story revolving around a Phantom who haunts a theater and viciously attacks performers of classical music there, as well as causing general mayhem. It seems like there’s some question whether this is a physical or ghostly Phantom!

The Phantom and the Fraud by Linda Dorrington is a weird little novel about a guy named Mungo who secretly lives in the walls of peoples’ homes due to a calamity that destroyed his life and career at some point. Between his composition of sublime music, his wandering about the lake in a boat, and his yelling at a woman about how she ruined everything, it’s almost certainly at least Phantom-inspired, even if the main character’s name is more evocative of one of Lloyd Webber’s other shows.

THE QUESTIONABLES:

The Phantom of the Auditorium by Gabriel Gadget is a childrens’ book involving strange disruptions at an elementary school auditorium. It seems like it’s probably Phantom-based in the same vein as the R.L. Stine book with the same name, but it’s hard to tell without reading it through!

The Hands of the Phantom by Unter Grimschrund is a story about a bereaved woman and her relationship with a man referred to as the Phantom who appears to have a dramatic case of physical dysphoria, but but details are sparse from writeups and excerpts.

Silent Song by Ron C. Nieto seems to be an inversion of the usual setup, with a woman sneaking in to listen to the beautiful music of a reclusive composer only for them to be thrust into conflict when he becomes the composer for a show she is starring in. It has a lot of themes in common with the Phantom story, but it’s still hard to tell! (This is a two-book series, so if this turns out to be related, its sequel, Shattered Silence, probably is, too.)

SPECIAL MENTION:

Thanks to maskedgeekgirl for alerting me to Le Fantome de l’Opera: une aventure de Rouletabille by Christophe Picaud and Jean-Charles Gaudin! A French comic crossing Leroux’s famous Phantom with his famous detective Rouletabille, it’s the second such crossover after Duchateau’s Rouletabille: Het spook van de Opera.

Let’s hope for some Valentine’s Day fun from next month’s roundup!

This is normally the type of content we’d share to our Patreon, but here’s a little plan for part of the Torwood map (where Amalthea and the winged unicorns live). Our explore maps will be function in a side-scrolling format, where different zones load based on your character’s location. While not ‘open world’ by strict definition, it will give the feeling of an open world map and allow you to interact with other players within the same/neighboring locations. The exploration maps will not be present during beta testing, as we’ll need more time and funds to properly work out the schematics of it. Still, these early map concepts are still fun to share!
