Mishtir Dokaner Kumror Torkari (Sweet Pumpkin)
Mishtir Dokaner Kumror Torkari is a Bengali culinary gem. ‘Mishti’ in Bengali means sweet, ‘Kumro’ refers to pumpkin, and ‘Torkari’ is a curry or vegetable preparation. This quintessential Bengali dish is sweet, spicy and savory. Infused with traditional spices from a Bengali pantry, the simplicity of the dish can be deceptive. The sweet pumpkin with the medley of spices is a celebration of the…

Day 2 of getting my sh!t together!
It is the second day of getting my life together, and although it wasn't perfect, it was still consistent. I am an insomniac, so sleep doesn't come easily to me without any help. I did not take my supplements or drink chamomile tea last night, which generally helped me to sleep. The supplements are usually made up of lavender and other herbs that help relax your nerves.
It works for me. So, I tossed and turned till 4 in the morning, as a result of which I could not go for a walk in the morning. But, I woke up just in time for my yoga class and joined it. I don't really enjoy it, but doing yoga makes me feel better throughout the day. It also helps me with sore muscles and body aches. I also feel very calm and at peace while doing it.
However, unlike yesterday, work was good. I managed to get a lot done and also binged on a couple of episodes from Queen of Tears. I'm so hooked on it. But, I can't watch anything at a stretch so I take breaks in between. It was a decent day but I wasn't feeling my best. I can't figure out why.
Anyways, now let's come to food. Since I woke up late, I wasn't in the mood for breakfast but I still ate something and lunch was a fulfilling Bengali meal, it was so yummy. Dinner was light and hearty. Also, I drank chamomile tea now, so hopefully I can sleep.
Breakfast:
1) Ice cream sandwich (I know not the healthiest option but I love it)
2) Black coffee
Tumblr media
Morning Snack: I got snacky right before heading to shower and that's when I had some leftover white potato curry aka shada alur torkari! It's so yummy. There are days when I eat this for dinner by itself.
Tumblr media
Lunch
1) Brown rice
2) Fish curry
3) Roasted papad curry or papor er torkari
4) Salad
Tumblr media
Evening Snack:
1) Grapes (I had to heavily edit the image as the one I clicked sucks)
2) Black coffee
3) 1 biscuit
Tumblr media
Dinner:
I had some chicken ham so I boiled some corn and stirred it with the ham in some butter and pepper. I then put together a salad with the buttered corn and ham, cucumbers, onions, and green chilies, sprinkled some garlic salt, pepper, and chat masala. Served with a spoonful of relish on top. This really put my day together. It was so comforting.
Tumblr media
Last but not the least, I had a cup of chamomile tea.

Oh, here's my choice for song of the day-

Kochuri Alu Dom | Annapurna Ghee | Durga Puja
Mahalaya marks the start of something truly special – Pujo breakfasts that are always close to the heart. From a simple plate of luchi torkari to the indulgent kochuri with niramish alur dom, it’s the little things that make them extraordinary. For me, it’s always Annapurna Ghee. The rich, fragrant ghee adds an unmatched depth of flavor to alur dom, and trust me, nothing beats ghee-e bhaja kochuri. Each bite takes me back to those cherished Pujo mornings with family. Annapurna Ghee doesn’t just enhance the taste, it brings that comforting, nostalgic touch to your festive meals. Because when it comes to Pujo’r khawa dawa, there's no substitute for the real thing.

I don't like mangoes. This month, our rooftop mango tree gifted us with a handful of mangoes. All praises to Allah and alhamdulillah for the rizk. My mother wrapped each one in newspapers so they would ripen evenly. When the mangoes slowly turned from dark green to bright yellow, everyone got one to devour. I don't like mangoes, but to honor some precious memories, I had one this month.
During the summers of my picchikaal, boroabbu would bring mangoes in bulk to distribute among our large family of 10 and their children. Mangoes were the most consumed fruit, a constant at every meal and even in the bikeler nashta. Aam dudh bhaat, Aam diye muri makha, aamer shorbot, aamer achaar, aamer morobba, kaacha aamer shorbot, kaacha aamaer bhorta, kaacha aamer daal and torkari. Aam was in everything.
It was during the afternoons when one of my fuppies taught me her favorite way to eat a mango. Butta (her nickname is Beauty. We nicknamed her nickname as well) handed a mango to each of us and asked to follow her closely. We did. She rubbed the mango with both her palms, to and fro. "Daal ghutnir moto" she said detailing us the motion. When the mango was soft to the touch and felt like a water balloon, she asked us to bite a small hole in it and then suck the juice out. "It's pure mango juice with no chemicals," she said.
While we were almost done chugging down that pure mango juice, she shared an interesting story. Apparently, there are sometimes worms in the mango, and when she was a child, she ate (drank) a good amount of them. "Extra protein," she added. Our eyes wide, almost popping out of their sockets, some of us gagging, ready to throw up every ounce of the juice we had consumed. But I sat down, finished my juice, promised myself never to play such a nasty joke on anyone else.
Fast forward several decades, here I am today teaching my son the trick of rub-it-poke-a-hole-and-chug. With glee, he followed my lead, and when I told him the story of the worms, he chuckled and said "Yummy"(got the humor of my fups)
This is the story of mangoes. I don't like mangoes. But I'll have them once or twice each season to honor the old memories and to cherish the new ones.

I saw African cuisine is your current hyperfixation /curi, I would love to hear some facts/things you find interesting about the subject! /gen
omgg i always love to talk about my hyperfixations thank you for asking
it's only been my interest for a few weeks so i don't know much YET but i've been researching how historical events and circumstances have affected cuisine so i was looking at the transatlantic slave trade and colonization of the americas and how it shaped cuisine in places mainly in southern america and the caribbean
i know that about 69% of enslaved people were brought from west africa, especially the kingdom of kongo so the cuisine is very influenced by that region and things like shrimp and grits, gumbo, okra, oh and BOILING PEANUTS this was very fascinating to me also collard greens and legumes like black eyed peas. the technique of frying chicken is also credited to west african influence but i don't know much about why/when it started. the one pot cooking method and stews is from west africa as well esp putting together meat and vegetables in a pot and cooking for long period of time (we do this a lot as well in bengali cuisine)
in regards to like regional african food, i've been most interested in ethiopian food because how similiar the flavors and cooking methods are to south asian food as a result of the indian ocean trade route it's just so cool to me how familiar it is to me despite being thousands of miles away from bangladesh absolutely mind boggling but yeah like injera bread, roti, sambusa, cic wet which resembles chana dal very much, they have dishes that resemble daal and south asian curry a lot too like misir wot and doro wat which is ethiopian chicken curry
but my favorite thing i have seen so far is their berbere spice first of all it is so fun to say second of all it has SO MANY DIFFERENT FLAVOR COMPONENTS i love it it's even more intricate than the spice mix i use for bengali torkaris/jhols (curry) not to mention the color is so vibrant you can't not be giddy cooking with these spices they smell and look so amazing it's my favorite part of cooking is the colorful spices
other african dishes/recipes i have been very interested in: jollof rice, okra stew, FUFU my god i am dying to eat this it looks so stretchy and soft i think i would be in love with it i just gotta go buy and make it or buy it from a restaurant when i get time.
i'm sure there's a lot more i can say if i keep digging around in my brain but i think this is long enough lmaoo thanks for asking!

The pure flavors of this stir fry reminds me of cold winter evenings at my parent’s home and sitting in front of my mom’s kitchen. My mom has this beautiful tradition of cooking parathas or roti and serving it to everyone straight from the skillet! Her kitchen is so small that there is no chance of anyone cramming in there and help her out! She loves rolling the dough and cooking it all by herself! I don’t know how you do it mamma but kudos to you!! I cooked this torkari today and immersed in happy memories https://www.instagram.com/p/CptvKFpM5Q4/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Day 4 of getting my sh!t together!
Hii! TGIF!!!
So, it is already the 4th day of this challenge. I also created a blog today and I was wondering whether I should transfer these contents to that blog. Maybe, I will. Anyway, so I woke up with a fever today and my entire body was sore. I did not have breakfast and went straight for lunch. I was craving something super spicy and yummy so I made some gochujang pasta with gluten-free spaghetti and skipped the cheese or milk, black pepper chicken, and ordered some pepper garlic shrimp. It was so yummy. I also had fresh coconut water. It was so refreshing.
I skipped the workout but had to work and it was good. Along with the fever, my allergies kicked in and it destroyed me 🫠🥲. Evening I munched on some darsaan and black coffee and for dinner I had my comfort food. It was a pretty chill sick day today.
Oh, I found some lost/hidden coins today, which totaled to not much, but I can still get some ice cream or chocolate with it, and it made me sooo happy. That was definitely the highlight of my day. I also found a leaf bunch that looked similar to four-leaf clover ☘️.

This Alu Kopir Torkari is always a hit in our home 🏠 simple pure flavors with the freshest ingredients. Cauliflower tastes best when you cook it the same day you bought it 😊 big pieces of potatoes 🥔 and big florets of cauliflower shallow fried in mustard oil, tempered with whole spices and then cooked to perfection. This sabji (vegetable dish) gets ready within 20 minutes. https://www.instagram.com/p/CoEOWuSO5lX/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
