Can't believe I'm seeing apologists for fucking SasuSaku on my timeline

I get people not liking Toradora or even not wanting to finish it, but the way it’s become VERY popular online to openly bash it or call it the worst anime romcom is very…… weird

the thing is… Toradora is not a shoujo. the story isn’t meant to be fluffy and perfect. Taiga as a character is EXTREMELY flawed. And I think she’s a little too flawed for the average romcom anime watcher.

Firstly, no I am not defending how she likes to hit Ryuuji, and that behavior in a real life person obviously wouldn’t be ok, but Winry of Fullmetal Alchemist regularly throws a wrench at Ed’s head for comedic effect and I very rarely see that being held against her character. I don’t like it either, but it’s a fairly weak criticism of Taiga specifically since slapstick was pretty par for the course in early 2000s anime comedy.

But other than that, she’s basically just… annoying and mean. And pretty quickly you learn that this is because she’s a spoiled brat who simultaneously lacks both parental guidance and attention. And they address this head on, and she eventually acknowledges this and tries to change it. The way her story arc is handled is actually pretty interesting. Just because the female protagonist isn’t an uwu perfect shy nice girl doesn’t mean it’s a bad love story

I feel like I have way more to say on this but in conclusion if you really couldn’t stand Taiga then Toradora isn’t for you, and that’s ok, but that does not make it objectively bad. There are absolutely aspects of it worth criticizing, but there are also a lot of really interesting story elements with complex exploration of both romantic and familial relationships. It’s definitely worth a watch if you can handle a 16 year old girl being an asshole

My Favorite Character from each of my Favorite Anime

Hi! I’ve done a few separate posts about my top 10 anime and my favorite anime characters, but I decided I’d combine those ideas into one post and try and pick out my favorite character from each of my favorite anime. This is going to be hard because I know I have multiple favorites for most of these, but I will do my best. Let’s go!

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood- Hohenheim

I usually cycle between Ed, Hohenheim, and Mustang being my favorite character, but recently it’s been Hohenheim. I think he’s both under appreciated and misunderstood by the FMAB fandom. Long story short, I love characters riddled with guilt (not sure what this says about me lol). If you’re interested, I’ve already written a whole post about how much I love him!

Revolutionary Girl Utena- Utena

I always shift between Utena and Anthy being my favorite, but I really have loved Utena from the start. I find it very compelling how she hides her internal anguish behind her cheerful, positive persona.

Toradora- Taiga

I’ve already written so much about Taiga (in this post, spoilers) so there’s not much else to say besides that I’m the number 1 Taiga defender. I love her, she reminds me of myself in some ways, she’s great. I think she’s the perfect example of a ‘flawed’ protagonist.

Chihayafuru- Chihaya

Chihaya is such a ray of sunshine, comic relief, and a total fuck up, and yet she is an incredible karuta prodigy and the protagonist of the show. She is also one of the most realistic neurodivergent-coded characters I’ve ever seen. I think it’s fun how she defies expectations as well; she has the appearance of a beautiful cool model, but as soon as other characters talk to her they realize how much of a nerd she is.

March Comes in like a Lion- Hina

There are a lot of sub-plots and semi-important characters in this show, but the side character that I was always the most interested in was Hina. I think the way she is so open about her emotions is inspiring, and as she goes through hardships it’s nice to see how she matures while also maintaining her cheerful attitude.

Your Lie in April- Tsubaki

I haven’t watched this anime in a long time, but I do know that when I first watched it my favorite character was Tsubaki for sure. Her unrequited love plot line was heart wrenching and compelling.

Love is War- Ishigami

I also cycle between a few favorite characters in Love is War (I adore both Shirogane and Kaguya of course) but at this point in the story in the anime, Ishigami is my favorite. I think he is such a realistic portrayal of an insecure, awkward teen, and I love how noble and selfless he is behind the scenes.

Haikyuu- Kageyama

What else is there to say, truly? I loved Kageyama the second he was introduced. His dynamic with Hinata is what makes the show, and his stubborn, cold personality is something I tend to be drawn to when it comes to my favorite kinds of characters.

Madoka Magica- Homura

Sayaka is a really really close second, but after finishing the series for the first time I couldn’t get Homura’s story out of my head. Her determination and willpower are honestly unmatched, and each new watch of the show makes me appreciate her more.

Monster- Dieter

I feel like Dieter may seem like an odd choice for a favorite; as you may expect, Tenma (many people’s favorite I’d assume) is probably a close second for me. But I think I liked Dieter so much because he was proof that love and support are capable of saving even the most traumatized individual. He was so cute and I loved how much he loved Tenma.

I have some relatives with hypoglycemia (without diabetes), so that was my starting point for research... Connecting that with growth hormone deficiency - when I've already headcanoned Dev's maternal grandpa as Ed Leadly - was a perfect fit, skldfj.

What conspiracy is at play in the universe that gave me "It's X-linked, I'd already headcanoned Leadly's daughter marrying Dale years ago, and now I have an independently developed hypoglycemia headcanon that fits this heritage perfectly..." I'm short myself and it's wild reading through the growth charts. It's... self-indulgent somehow that I'll be headcanoning a short adult Dev. Who according to all these charts will probably still be taller than me, but I'll take it. We'll see.

Throwback to when I watched "Toradora!" - an anime about a school bully who's famous for being short - and after all the talk about how she was so incredibly short, wow, it turns out she's significantly taller than I am, wheeze...

Oh, I just looked it up and apparently she's almost a foot taller in the anime than the manga. Why did they do that to her. Did they make an anime about a short girl and then decide it was a pain to draw her interacting with people and objects... help.

My favorite is the original serie, although I also like the Lost Canvas a lot and Episode G (because Aioria is the protagonist). Soul of Gold gives me mixed feelings. From Omega and Next Dimension, better don't ask me; my mind lives in denial. My favorite characters are the Golden Saints, especially Aioros and Aioria, being Aioria my super favorite.

Thanks to Saint Seiya I developed a great love for the stars 💫 and I have many scientific books on the subject, as well as books of myths and legends about the constellations ✨.

💥 I'm a Marvel Girl. I love those tormented superheroes and antiheroes. I basically grew up watching Marvel since Iron Man came out in 2008 and I immersed myself fully in the world of the comics, I have a lot of comics and books on my bookshelf 🤭. My favorites are: Iron Man ♥️, Captain America, Spider-Man, Loki, the X-Men, Black Widow and Scarlet Witch, in all their presentations and with all their charms and defects!.

🍿Series: Friends, Full House, The big bang theory, How I met your mother and How I met your father, Modern Family, Mom, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel... I love it K-Dramas like Goblin: The lonely and great God, Crash landing on you, Tale of the Nine Tailed 😋, I have also watched many animes like Sailor Moon, Ouran High School Host Club, Toradora, Code Geass, Inuyasha, Kaleido Star, Shaman King, Attack on Titan... it's a long list and I don't remember everything at this moment 🤔. Miraculous Ladybug (I know it's for kids, but ... there is Chat Noir 🖤).

🐉In my House of the Dragon era 🖤: Like many people, I was also terribly disappointed with the horrible ending of Game of Thrones, but I really loved Fire and Blood when I read it in 2020... so I decided to give the serie a chance when I saw the first trailer... and I don't regret it! 🥳. I liked Daemon and Rhaenyra so much in the book and absolutely loved them in the TV Show! (Matt and Emma are incredible! ❣️). Another character that I loved in the book and the one I always wanted to know more about was Jacaerys Velaryon and I must say that I am very pleased with the choice of Harry Collett 😍 (oh yeah baby! 🔥).

I really hope that the directors and writers do justice to this wonderful crown prince! 🥰, because for me he is already one of my favorite characters of all time! ❣️.

I love Studio Ghibli movies with all my heart 💗 since my dad bought me the movie of Kiki Delivery Service when I was a 6-year-old little girl.

8. An op/ed you always skip

Jitensha (shipp ED 13) - The tone of this ending did not match the arc AT ALL I could not bear to listen to this happy go-lucky bike ride immediately after watching half the cast killed and city destroyed it felt very tone deaf. This ED belonged to kimi ni todoke not Pein Arc 😅😅

Fullmetal alchemist by Hiromu Arakawa Fullmetal Alchemist by Hiromu Arakawa is one of the most popular manga and anime written by a woman. It took its creator nine years to finish the story. Fullmetal Alchemist revolves around the life of Edward Elric and Alphonse Elric. The brothers are gifted alchemists but had a troubled past when they tried to revive their mother using alchemy. Haikyu! Haikyu! is a popular sports manga by Haruichi Furudate. Its protagonist, Shoyo Hinata, is a short high schooler with the potential to become a great Japanese volleyball player. Gakuen Babysitters by Hari Tokeino Gakuen Babysitters by Hari Tokeino is a popular manga series for its comedic and cute formula. It revolves around the life of Kotaro and Ryuuichi, the Kashima brothers. They lost their parents and were taken in by a generous and kind woman. They navigate life as they make friends with other kids, parents, and other characters. Despite the tragedy of losing their parents, their new home and family made things easier.

Orange Cake from Toradora! (ED2) - Requested

Merry Christmas and best tidings of the season! This is a nice sweet cake that you can make for Christmas, or any other time, really. I made it after happening across a fruit stall yesterday before a (pre) christmas party, and managed to whip it up in time. This was an anon request, so thanks, anon! It’s really easy to spice up according to your liking and the season.

I bought 3 oranges because of the video, but I really only needed 2? (Thanks, Ryuji) And a carton of orange juice. I accidentally got one with pulp, but it didn’t affect it too much.

Ingredients - (For a 9-inch round cake pan)

For Candied Oranges

1 orange, peel on, sliced into half-moons

½ cup (125ml) sugar

½ cup (125ml) water

2 tbsp orange juice.

For Cake

2 cups (500ml) cake flour

1 cup (250ml) sugar

3 tsp baking powder

½ tsp salt

½ cup milk

½ cup (125ml) orange juice

½ cup (125ml) olive oil (or butter)

3 eggs

zest of 1 orange

Optional Christmas Spicing:

Cinnamon (a pinch, to taste)

Cointreau or Rum (2tbsp)

Method

1. We’ll make the candied oranges first. Dissolve the sugar in water and orange juice in a saucepan over low heat until it simmers.

2. Add in the orange slices, making sure they are submerged in the sugar water. Occasionally turn them over.

3. They are done when the skins are slightly transparent and the sugar is thick. (Not fully dry). If you’re making candied oranges just to eat on their own, continue till it’s drier.

4. Line a 9 inch cake pan with wax paper (mine was aluminum, (but if yours is a dark non stick one perhaps you can skip the wax paper,) and grease it throughly. 

5. Arrange the orange slices in a spiral pattern on the cake pan. DO NOT THROW AWAY THE LEFTOVER SYRUP IN THE SAUCEPAN.

WARNING: This looks nice, but it was upside down, as I found out later to my chagrin. Start spiralling out from the inside!

6. Next, we can move on to batter things. (bad pun intended). At this point, preheat your oven to 180 Celcius (reduce to 170 for smaller pans and dark pans)

7.Combine the eggs, milk, orange juice, oil, zest for the cake in a bowl and beat throughly. 

8. Sift the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt (and optional cinnamon) into an even bigger bowl, making sure they are mixed evenly.

9. Slowly add the wet mixture to the dry mixture as you beat the batter till smooth.

10. Slowly pour the batter into the cake pan, careful not to dislodge your orange-ment. (bad pun intended again.)

11. Bake for 35mins at 180C or as needed, until a toothpick inserted near the centre of the cake comes out clean. (Ryuji somehow makes his in a microwave, but his pan is metal?!?! And please don’t put metal in a microwave??!?!)

12. Let the cake cook on a rack for 15-20mins, before upending it onto a larger plate (the bottom with the orange slices is now the top.) But it’s not finished yet!

13. Heat the remaining syrup from the orange slices with 2 tbsp water or Cointreau, stirring till well-incorporated.

14. Brush the syrup onto the top of the cake. You might not be able to paint with all the colours of the wind, but you can paint with orange now… ahhahaaa.

14. Leave the cake to stand to allow the syrup to soak in! 

15. Have a very Merry Christmas as you enjoy it with your friends! (Mine were asking for English Tea after a bite of this. :P) Also, a sharp knife instead of a regular cake knife is needed to slice nicely through this. (Hence the lack of single-slice cake pictures)

(Anime review… I enjoyed the earlier parts of it but didn’t really like how it ended.) Also, I have a bit of Taiga’s personality but at least I can cook like Ryuuji. But I can’t do other housework well. hahaa.
