I got curious to see how Ortega's Cairo would sound singing compared to her Wednesday. I have both cloned, though Cairo might need some cleaning up (I only had an hour and a half to work with here, while I had six hours to work with Wednesday...getting clean audio from less is harder, but 'Cairo' sounded fine in the teaser I made, so....).

The accents are nearly identical since it's just paste over, but Cairo sounds sadder. Someone sounding sadder than Wednesday? Just bury me now and be over with it.

It does show the difference in acting, but I chose audio from her narration rather than the action acting (which would have needed cleaning/processing since a lot of it has setting reverb). With Wednesday, I took more from the action on screen.

(I'm likely using Wednesday's version for another Afterburn teaser.)

The Archive Undying by Emma Mieko Candon

WOW, this is a ride, in so many ways. i really dig sff that drops me in without explanations and lets me learn the world through context, and i adore a book that really asks me to do a lot of thinking and piecing together and interpreting subtleties. i'm a go-with-the-flow reader, i don't really go back to look again at anything or look up words as i read, i trust the narrative to make sense eventually. this book satisfies and rewards all of that!! i found it a little denser than is ideal for me, but dense in that lush, humid way where you're a little out of breath all the time. i don't think i fully have a grasp on the world or the nuances of the plot, which makes it feel pleasantly surreal and makes me really excited for the next book.

i do feel fully invested in and in love with the main characters, which makes the whole thing work for me. Sunai is such a mensch!!! Veyadi tries hard and loves with ragged edges! everyone is a personality and a delight even when they're deceiving each other and switching sides and screwing up and hating themselves, and i think it's because Sunai's pov is so tender and generous. he's a big mess, and is willing to accept and forgive the messiness of the people he loves; how could he, wounded as he is, expect anyone else to be flawless? it makes me love him, and makes me love everyone who loves him.

other highlights for me are the complexities of personhood presented here: there are corrupted AI gods and humans damaged by their interfaces, there are intelligences within intelligences and fragments of being and surprising mergers of thought and self. it's like a political conflict happening inside a funhouse, with pleasingly incomplete religious underpinnings that put me in mind of A Psalm for the Wild-Built, except it's nothing like that book at all in tone or temperament. also, mlm main characters, which seems fairly rare still in this kind of epic speculative fiction, plus interesting gender things going on in general! also also, i'm such a sucker for Asian-based sff worlds, and this one has that feel: some East Asian, some Southeast, some South, flavoring the names and the language and the food and the feel without any one-to-one mapping of cultures in this book onto cultures in the real world.

how i read it: an e-galley through NetGalley, from the elusive Tor, my current fave publisher just pumping out bangers all the time. upon getting access to this i felt the way you do when a cat chooses to sniff your hand.

try this if you: like to float and be carried by beautiful prose in a vast and deep moving landscape you can never see all of at once, enjoy queers making bad choices for good reasons, dig a book where the relationships are varied and interesting and often sexual without any of the usual "romantic" tropes, have feelings about questions of selfhood, or understand revenge but prefer mercy.

maybe not for you if: you get very frustrated by books that move fast without explaining much, and books that are purposefully playing with mysterious perspectives and voices. this book does not show its cards, and i love that but i know it can be a dealbreaker for some.

some lines i really liked: this is a loooong book so i picked out a few.

It is excruciating to behold. Sunai understands that they know each other. He and Imaru first met Ruhi when he and she were still running together, and Imaru brought Ruhi's letter to Ghamor only a couple of months ago. None of that mitigates the bodily shock of seeing them together. Talking. The panicked realization that they could talk to each other about him--that they have likely already done this--compels Sunai to interrupt.

He never imagined that Ruhi might already have chosen to do the damnable thing himself. It makes him feel a certain fuck of a way.

53. a popular book/series that you hate

ok disclaimer: i don’t actually know if it’s actually popular, but it’s popular enough to be hugo nommed but i really didn’t like legends and lattes.

first of all i don’t think cosy is for me, but also… yeah i can tell that it was a nanowrimo draft. because at least the first release (before TOR picked it up) was in dire need of another edit pass or two, between the pacing (yes i know it’s cosy, but it read like a playing an idle cafe builder with the end of chapter upgrades) and awkward word flow.

and also i think part of the appeal of a coffeeshop au is that it’s characters you’re already attached to. and the story didn’t do enough work to make me attached to these ones.

(if nothing else maybe it means one day i too can get into classic publishing)

60. a book that you think about at 3am

coming as a complete surprise to absolutely nobody: ancillary justice/imperial radch. it’s got it all baby! autistic coded AI, Intricate Rituals, an unreliable narrator… but most importantly, seivarden, girlfailure. my fave. she’s exactly the kind of character i fixate on, and i’m not mad about it.

also coming to no surprise—and i think there’s even evidence of it in the form of posts i made—sometimes those 3am thoughts are just rotating seivarden in my head at high speed.

I love that movie. Planets abandoned due to war and destruction, wounded people, Exodus, unfortunate accidents that strike the beautiful spaceship ......, crews are slowly being swallowed by depression over a long period of time, and deaths involving a variety of factors, pointless, despair, violence, no salvation, not something that will happen that will lead to a great destruction, the human mind is simply consumed by the endlessness of time and the lack of future, and the counseling AI is broken under the stress of the humans.

On top of that, it is quite sexually explicit.

Another question about Kenta because lately he’s been bouncing around him my head like it a trampoline park. Seriously dude, ily, but stop. It’s giving me a headache 😭:

Were his parents horrible to him? Did he have any family issues or low self esteem issues, because he seems like the type of person to hide how he’s feeling very well or bully others to help mask how sad/angry he is. Like, bullying Kinshin because of his and Yuina’s bond, or Irina because of her and Kinshin’s bond.

And follow up question:

Does he end up talking to anyone? How is he after the final battle? Did he live, and become a better person with the help of others, or did he die the villain?

And very random:

I like seeing Kenta as neither evil nor good. To me, he’s the lil misguided prick who bully’s others because something really bad happened in his home/ family life. He’s like…. The Loki to your OC’s to me. But a bit eviler, and isn’t used to clean up the messes the others make because they’re lazy.

KENTA'S PAST💚

Kenta has always been a difficult person to deal with, and when he was younger it was no different.

He made a lot of messes and he didn't obey his parents...

So what did they do to Kenta? They abandoned him at the orphanage...

Well, it was hard for him to get used to living like that, but Kenta grew up and learned to deal with his new reality.

He loved watching the children arrive there, just to see how sad they were (that made him feel better).

He would always play pranks on the new children, so Kishin soon became the target.

Kenta broke into Kishin's room while Kishin was getting to know the orphanage.

In that moment, Kenta found a letter, which was inside a box that Kishin brought when he arrived.

Kenta was devastated when he saw that the letter was from Kishin's mom and in the letter she said how much she loved Kishin, that she felt so bad for leaving him, but all of this was to save him and keep him safe. Kenta couldn't stand to see that Kishin's mom loved him, while his own mom hated him and simply abandoned him.

After that, Kenta's hatred for Kishin increased and so Kenta tormented Kishin every day, he wanted to make Kishin feel horrible, he did everything to make Kishin believe that he was abandoned because his family hated him and that Kishin would never be loved.

For a while Kenta felt better when he saw Kishin slowly giving up and going into a deep depression, but then Irina appeared. Everything changed again, Irina had everything Kenta had ever wanted, he felt so jealous and seeing that Irina was by Kishin's side, helping him and being someone who truly cared about him, made Kenta even worse.

All Kenta feels to this day is hatred and envy.

Even now that he's older, Kenta sometimes thinks about all this. For him, Irina and Kishin are the villains of this story.

A few things for those of you going off half cocked in the comments (not the OP, they probably know the situation fine, this is just for the peanut gallery).

One: Kid was 15 when he wrote Eragon, of course it isn't good. I was writing bad fanfic at 15 that makes me cringe today, so were you, if that's all you've read of his get off your high horse about his skills.

Two: Even at 15 Paolini liked real art enough to name Palencar Valley after his (and my) favorite artist who then illustrated the covers of Paolini's books, so like. It's not like he hasn't worked with artists on this shit, we can't act like he just has always been full of hatred for artists. That doesn't preclude future bad behavior, but let's not assume he hates artists.

Three: That book cover IS UNDER COPYRIGHT. It's not a raw AI art image, it's been reworked by Tor for the book, don't risk the legal trouble.

Four: This wasn't, apparently, a big plan on Paolini's part to run with AI art. The Tor covers group got a piece of art from a supplier which they claim (Tor) they didn't know was AI art, then polished and modified it to present to Paolini as a cover. Whether or not that's a lie, IDK.

Five, to address the comments I saw about "Eragorn is a Stat Wars rip off" to you people specifically? Google "The Hero's Journey" read at least five articles, then come back to the conversation when you sound less ignorant. Ignorance is nothing to be ashamed of, and you're not WRONG, but you're oversimplifying something and using it as a bludgeon when it's... Pretty much not part of the conversation.

Six, and again, this is not for OP but rather for the peanut gallery: BLOCKING SOMEONE IS EVERYONE'S RIGHT. Full stop. You all trot out the "it you don't want to see something or one, block it!" to users all the time, that right isn't suspended when they're famous! Paolini blocking OP is fair play.

And honestly, listen, I'm an artist. Went to college for way too long for a degree I didn't want, only to change my mind and be an artist. I paint all the time. I draw all the time. And I gotta be honest I'm really on the fence about AI art. And I fuckin mean that. Did it train on images we didn't consent to give it? Sure. So did I. So do all artists. That's not a problem for me. Does that training mean that AI art kicks out images that are derivative and almost infringement? Yep, and that's fucked up. Though, to be fair, I've met artists who do that too. Is the use of AI art here putting someone out of a job? Maybe. Honestly that I don't have an answer for. Feel like that was an argument we used about photography too, though.

But all that aside, my horse and OPs horse and Paolini's horse aside, I AM BEGGING YOU- do some FUCKING research before you decide that you've formed an opinon on something.

To reiterate: Christopher Paolini, author of Eragon and other such books, blocked me on Twitter for calling him out about his AI-generated cover.

Tor has admitted he approved this cover and they have been consulting him every step of the way. He is complicit.

It’s honestly so fucking frustrating that this is going to go forward. That the cover to Fractal Noise is gonna be published with AI art that has ripped off other artists. And neither the author nor the publisher give one flying fuck about it.

I don’t think a lot of people really understand what this means. Book cover art is already nearly universally shitty. You go look at fantasy art covers, and they’re all photomanipulations, generally a single girl on the cover doing magic or looking into the distance. There’s no variety. But at least people get paid for them.

With AI art, artists don’t get paid. You know who does? The people who made the dataset. The people who sold the “cover.” Even though it took less than 20 minutes to make.

If this isn’t infuriating you, I don’t know what the hell else to say. Machine learning is coming for everyone’s jobs, and corporate wallets don’t care if it’s safe or not. Certain areas are already experimenting with AI Amazon deliveries, and it’s been hinted that long-haul trucking is next.

This is unacceptable. PLEASE. I’m not going to guilt you into sharing this, but it is CRITICAL that we take a stand now and STOP THIS FROM HAPPENING. If you follow me, I am asking you as a friend to share this, and to find it in your heart to put pressure on people who publish AI art without paying artists.

Tor could change the cover. They’re not, because they’re using Fractal Noise as a test run to see if they can get away with it. Don’t let them. I don’t care how much you like Paolini’s work (although I think Eragon was a boring slog, so I had no qualms about calling him out), you HAVE to do your best to make this stop.

Starting off with... the fairly obvious.

AI: The Somnium Files

This murder mystery VN full of dirty jokes, puns and references to other media as well as mentions of urban legends has changed my life for worse. Play it!

Digimon World Next Order

This is a vpet/RPG hybrid where you have to look after two Digimon partners while also exploring the Digital World and recruiting Digimon to rebuild a city. It's on the grindier side but once you get the hang of everything it gets rather addicting. The PC version features a run button and a beginner mode, something the PSVita and PS4 versions didn't have.

Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth Complete Edition. This is a collection of PS2 esque traditional turnbased RPGs. Like Next Order, these are on the grindy side but the grinding is extremely satisfying and building the optimal Digimon team is a lot of fun. Also great to play while doing something like listening to podcasts.

A remastered HD collection of PS2 RPGs featuring a brand new and original fourth episode unique to this collection. These games are are actually set in an MMORPG and you play as the protag's player avatar, Haseo. Track down the mysterious Tri-Edge and unravel the mysteries of The World.

A collection of two classic scrimblo 2D platformers remakes, Klonoa: Door to Phantomile and Klonoa: Lunatea's Veil. Cute visuals, simple yet engaging gameplay, catchy music and stories which may or may not make you cry.

A really fun 2D anime fighter with lots and lots of characters and tons of mechanics, now also with rollback!

Super Kiwi 64

(I know this game is rather cheap when not on sale to begin with but I'm plugging it anyway shhh)

This is a cute and fun bite sized 3D platformer that harkens back to 90s platformers, particularly the Nintendo 64 ones. The movement is really tight and fun and the game takes around an hour or so to 100%. Highly recommended for quick breaks between huge games!

Snake Pass

An unconventional 3D platformer in which you don't jump and maneuver through the air with complicated movements but instead slide, crawl and climb as a snake. With beautiful visuals, cute and colorful characters, unconventional but fun gameplay as well as music by David Wise, you can't go wrong with this one!
