I’m going to take my parents (to sum up: traditional but not homophobic) to see Love, Simon whilst telling them it’s like The Post or something. Final ExU thoughts

Eh.  Not a meh, just an eh.

Probably a fun game to play in, but for me personally not too fun to watch.

Still confused how Orym being essentially forced to eat pies until he feels sick makes him really love pie (LIAM YOU BETRAYER top10animebetrayals) no i will not let this go

Loved Matt as Dariax, wish we could see more player!Matt with him just willing to take the spotlight at times, rather than be background.

Aabria was a perfectly fine GM.  There were calls she made that I disagreed with at times, but that doesn’t make the calls WRONG, it just means that if I were GMing, I’d make them differently.  (granted, I’d also be a fuuucking terrible gm probably, but still!)

I didn’t see the ‘unfairly targeting’ that I saw internet getting mad about.  Yes, there were comments made, but in context and with tone and body language of all, it really did feel fully joking and in the moment.  Plus, I feel like Aimee leaned in to a lot of the mechanic decisions by playing them more RP and suffering for the consequences, rather than her ‘just not understanding’ and being punished for it.  There were times of confusion and moments where I feel like things could have been more calmly clarified, but didn’t see anything ‘mean’.

Did watching add anything to my C3 watch?  Nooooot really?  So far, it really does seem like the C3 characters are standing on their own, similar to how a normal session 0 group would have their backstory.  I do agree with the cast in saying that watching ExU isn’t a requirement for understanding C3 (though I still stand by my ‘it’s a requirement for me because if they aired the session 0s I’d 100% watch the session 0s’)

Do I think that CR made a bad choice with ExU?  I think...I think they did a bad job of portraying what it was.  When I first heard the announcement, I thought it was going to be a non-canon mini-series set in Exandria, and was going to be almost a showcase of how DMs could interact with the world without feeling like they had to be tied to the in-game canon.  I’m not particularly a fan of the fact that ExU is canon, with information in the books and everything, but I also wish it would have been *announced* as such.  There’s definitely been valid criticism made of ExU, and there’s definitely been bullshit criticism too.  I think ExU was both a hit and a miss at the same time.  There are things that they did right, and things that I think could be improved upon.  I’m not even going to attempt to try to give my own feedback on it, because I can really only speak from a viewer POV, and CR takes into both viewer and player POV, so what might work from my point of view might be less enjoyable for a player.  (also I could only speak from a theoretical POV where the players did exactly what I wanted them to do which LOL WHEN DOES THAT EVER HAPPEN)

If they do more ExU, I’ll give it a watch and see how it goes, but it might be like how I’m watching it now, which is at 1.75x speed and without any plans to watch again.
