After landing a job as an off-season caretaker, Jack Torrance, an aspiring author and recovering alcoholic moves to the hotel with his wife Wendy and his gifted son Danny to the snow-covered Colorado's secluded Overlook Hotel. But writer's block prevents Jack from pursuing a new writing career. Everything has its time. First, the manager must give Jack a grand tour. Then Mr Hallorann, the facility's ageing chef, chats with Danny about rare psychic gifts. The mysterious employee also warns the boy about the cavernous hotel's abandoned rooms especially Room No.237 is off limits. Slowly Jack starts to lose his mind in the silent and secluded place which drives him to kill his wife and son. After all the strange occurrences and blood-chilling visions have trapped the family in a silent gargantuan prison hammered by snowstorms. Danny and his mother try to escape the hotel he is helped by his own spilt personality and the Mr. Hallorann. At the end, Jack is left stranded in the snow near the gardens of the hotel and Danny with his mother escape to live a simple life in the end.

The Silence of the Lambs is a 1991 American psychological horror thriller film directed by Jonathan Demme based on the Thomas Harris's 1988 novel of the same name.

The plot of the movie revolves around a young FBI trainee who is hunting a serial killer by the name of Buffalo Bill who skins his female victims . To catch him,she seeks the advice of the imprisoned Dr.Hannibal Lector who is a brilliant psychiatrist and a cannibalistic serial killer. The FBI trainee is able to catch Buffalo Bill with the help of Hannibal's notes but in return Hannibal is able to escape the prison. Days after at the FBI Academy graduation party, the FBI trainee receives a call from Hannibal Lecter who is now in the Bahamas. As Lector assures that he won't pursue the young FBI trainee, he excuses himself from the call by remarking that he's having dinner with an old friend.

The Conjuring is a 2013 American supernatural horror film directed by James Wan. The movie is the first film in the Conjuring Universe Franchise based on the real-life incident of famous paranormal investigators Ed And Lorraine Warren.

The movie is inspired by the real life reports of the famous demonologitsts Ed and Lorraine Warren who come to help the Perron Family who move into a farmhouse in Harrisville,Rhode Island with their 5 daughters Andrea,Nancy,Christine,Cindy,April and their dog Sadie who refuses to enter the house on the day of moving. During the game of hide and seek the girls discover a boarded up entrance to an unknown cellar. Paranormal events start to occur in the house within the first few nights. Every clock in the house stops at 3:07 am. Carolyn awakens with additional large bruises every morning. One day, they find Sadie dead in the yard and Carolyn and Christine both encounter a malevolent spirit. They contact the Warrens for help who meet to agree and conduct an initial investigation during Lorraine feels a dark spirit which has latched itself to the Perron family. After a few months,the malevolent spirit named Bathsheba who claims full control and possesses Carolyn who sets her sites on to kill the daughters of the Perron Family. Later in the night, Warrens are summoned to help the Perrons and free Carolyn from the possession of Bathsheba who is trying to kill the daughters.

The plot of the movie revolves around the Graham Family which includes Annie Graham a miniature,her husband,her son and her daughter. The story begins with viewer looking out from the window in a workshop to a tree house, then turning and zooming in to a bedroom in a dollhouse that is in the workshop. As her mother passes away, she and her family prepares for her mother's funeral,unsettling occurrences and palpable situations manifestations start nesting in the secluded house's dark corners. A thick veil of grief and guilt and a sinfully pleasant sense of relief increasingly shroud the already troubled mother. The mounting distress of Annie's 13 year old Charlie becomes evident, and her older brother Peter begins to feel the relentless anguish of culpability. Now little by little, a sinister dark presence robs Annie of her free will, demanding a cruel sacrifice ins exchange of glorious rewards.

Not Who But What the Buffalo Bills Should Draft

The Buffalo Bills should draft the best player available.  Also, the best player available is a receiver.  This astounding coincidence that limits the choice to one position makes selecting easier.  The certainty is as comforting as the reason for the constraint is vexatious.  Their Michelin-starred chef shouldn’t be limited to Top Ramen.

Noting how few they’ve added in the Beane era is almost as deflating as noting how late they were selected.  It’s not to bash the players selected as much as it is to note a team with a generational quarterback should add them way earlier.

2. If I Killed Someone For You

“¿Would you love me more if I killed someone for you? ¿Would you hold my hands? They’re the same ones that I used when I killed someone for you”

It had been a few days since I started working and since my first case. It had been a very quiet week. Week I took the opportunity to meet the rest of the team, because we don’t work independently; Captain Jim Brass, homicide detective and the person we turn to when we need anything legally. Our key lab tech Greg Sanders is first-rate, he’s always smiling and making jokes. Doctor Al Robbins, Chief Coroner, is our secret weapon, not only he is sharp he’s also not disturbed by the actions and habits of humanity.

According to statistics, Tuesday and Wednesday are the days of least criminal activity, so that would explain why half the team had the night off. Since that night only Grissom and I would be there, he promised me that he would introduce me more to his specialty, forensic entomology. I left my bag in my locker when I received a message from Grissom saying he was waiting for me outside, we had a 420. I started studying the codes used by CSIs and police officers and I knew what a 420 was; homicide. Grissom drove in silence until we reached the crime scene. Police had already cordoned off the area, but there were a lot of people around, including journalists. Sergeant Ray O’Riley was waiting for us, he was the one who called Grissom.

-Press is going to be all over this one –he warned us- Four dead; mother, father and two teenage boys. Sisters were luckier. Teen girl heard a noise and hid in the closet. Alerted the neighbors. The younger sister, Brenda, is over there.

-¿What’s the matter with your guys? –Grissom asked him when he saw a couple of officers leaving the house to vomit.

-They’ve been inside.

-I want the paramedics that ran this house back here immediately and call dispatch, you tell all my entire graveyard shift that I want them here ASAP; all of them, no exceptions –Grissom ordered the Sergeant- I’m going to do a preliminary walkthrough and you are going to take my notes, Laura.

We put on gloves and entered the house. The lights were off so we were going with the flashlight and being careful where we stepped. Just entering the house, something started to move in my stomach. I had the feeling that the murders had been brutal.

-The air smells like copper; lots of blood. Breathe through your mouth –Grissom indicated as we climbed the stairs and then we found the first body- Male Caucasian, approximately 40 years old, lying in a pool of blood. No drag marks and body does not appear to have been moved. Multiple stab wounds to the back and neck.. looks like a single edge blade. Head faces west, the feet pointing east.

-Grissom, ¿can you take your own notes? –I asked as I was dizzy and retching- I need a minute.

-I got it –Sara appeared from nowhere and took the notebook I was writing on- Go get some fresh air.

I left the house without touching anything focused on not throwing out until getting a barf bag. Luckily, when I breathed fresh air and leaned on the SUV to have a fixed place, I was starting to feel better again. After a few minutes, the other team members began to arrive but Nick was the first to do it. He parked right next to me and when he got out of the car, he saw me.

-Hey, ¿what are you doing out here? –I looked at him and then he knew- ¡Oh! ¿That bad, huh?

-I thought it would never happen to me.. react like this.

-We all think it won’t happen to us and then it does, so don’t give it too much credit and wait to see a decomposing corpse.

-¡Wow! ¿Aren’t you the life of the party? –I said ironically and we both smiled.

Once the whole team was together, Grissom told us how we were going to work and what each one was going to do.

-First rule for the crime scene; do not do any interviews. Second rule; don’t talk to the sheriff either. Killer was here not two hours ago, he left part of himself behind.

-Edmond Locard’s exchange principle –I muttered, according to what Grissom said. In forensic science, Locard’s principle holds that the perpetrator of a crime will leave something behind and take something with them.  

-Exactly –Grissom nodded- Catherine, Sara, I need you inside, mapping and blood samples. Nick, Warrick, the perimeter. I wanna know how he got here, how he got in, how he got out and how he left.

-I’ll take the back, ¿Warrick you got the front? –Nick asked.

-You got it.

-Laura, I need you to transport the little girl to Sunrise Hospital for a psych evaluation. Once you’ve done it, come back here.

I nodded and headed to the police car where the little girl was sitting bundled up in a police jacket. She showed no emotion, instead she kept staring at the house. I bent down in front of her and looked at her with a slight smile.

-¡Hi! My name is Laura, ¿is your name Brenda? –suddenly, she looked at me but she didn’t say anything- ¿Do you want to go for a ride with me?

After taking Brenda to the hospital and leaving her with the woman from Family Services and the Doctor, I went back to the crime scene, just like Grissom told me. When I arrived, I found him trying to escape the press.

-Grissom, I’m back –I approached him- The doctor will page me when he’s done with the evaluation. ¿Where do you want me meanwhile?

-¿Do you think you can take the interior of the house? –he asked due to my reaction before.

-Yes, I do.

-Grissom –a man in a suit approached us, and then he saw me- ¿Who’s this?

-This is Laura –he kindly stated- She’s the new CSI.

-¿Do you think it’s okay to put a rookie on a high-profile case?

-I know what I’m doing, Sheriff.

-Mayor just called.. ¿so what do you’ve got? –Grissom denied with his head- Just give me something I can run with, I have to talk to the press.

-As soon as I have something, you’ll have something.

In the most elegant way, Grissom excused us and we entered the house again. For a couple of hours, I helped Catherine and Sara collect blood samples from every blood splatter and record each one on the crime scene map. The map was going to help us clarify the situation of how the crime was committed.

-¿What’s your take? –I asked them.

-Whoever did it, killed the mother first, in her sleep quick–Sara began to explain.

-Explains why the blood is confined in the bed and the floor under it.

-Husband woke up, ran to protect his kids –Sara continued- The killer stabbed him and then finished him off down the hall.

-Gave his life for the little girl –I concluded, since he died near Brenda’s door.

My phone rang indicating that I had received a message from the hospital. They had finished the psychological evaluation, so I had to go. I said goodbye to the girls and I went down the stairs. David, the forensic assistant, was walking out the door carrying the body of a family member. Before exiting the house, Nick lifted the sheet that covered the body and covered it again pissed off.

-This kid should be out playing football –he exhaled and then hit the door.  

-This is getting under your skin, huh –he just looked at me with a frown so I decided to try to make him laugh to calm him- Don’t give it too much credit and wait to see how it swells.

-¿That’s what I get for helping you before? –he smiled at me knowing that I returned his joke.

-Put some ice on it before the swelling starts –I answered with a smile.

Connie, the Family Services person assigned to the case, and I were waiting when the doctor left the office and came to see us with Brenda. We both got up as soon as we saw them arrive.

-Brenda’s fine but I’d like her to have a consult –he looked at his wrist watch- I’ve paged the psychiatric resident, he should be here within the hour.

-Thanks –Connie said placing her hand on Brenda’s back- I’ll take it from here.

-¿What’s the head exam for? –I asked.

-I said we’ll take it from here –she insisted- It’s already going to be tense.

-Look, if there’s any forensic evidence found during this exam, I need to be there –suddenly, Brenda pulled away from Connie and hugged me around the waist- It’s okay Brenda, I’m not leaving you.

After a couple of hours in the hospital with Brenda, I got a message from Warrick saying that we were all going to meet in the break room to review the case. When I arrived at the Crime Lab everyone was muttering about a suspect.

-Hey, I heard you have a suspect –I entered the room and went straight to the fridge to get my sandwich, then I sat down.

-We have about four and with the tire prints alone –Warrick answered.

-Let’s talk about what else we have –Grissom put on his glasses- Tina Collins’ pajama top from the murder scene without a drop of blood on it.

-¿How do you explain that? –I asked- If my whole family was murdered, I’d run to them to check to see if they are still alive.

-We are about to go ask her –Catherine answered- Nick, ¿what did you find out about the stuff that you collected at the back of the house?

-¿The bidi? –he bit his sandwich and continued explaining- DNA still processing but Tina said nobody in the family smoked.

-So a non-family member was out there –Sara summarized.

-¿Bidi? ¿Bidi? –Grissom repeated- I thought you found a cigarette and a match behind the house.

-It’s just like a cigarette –he answered trying not to laugh- Kids smoke them they think there’s less carbon monoxide.

-¿What did you find out about the psychic exam on the little girl? –Catherine asked me.

-The shrink says the kid is in a catatonic state from the trauma. I could’ve told you that, but she did respond at the name “Buffalo”. She freaked out.

-¿Where is she? –Grissom asked.

-I left her in the car, the windows are cracked –I answered with a straight face and everyone looked at me with their mouths open- Give me a little credit, she’s at the hospital.

When they realized I was teasing them, they breathed a sigh of relief and then laughed about it. Warrick, Nick and Sara went to question the other three suspects, who shared the scooter, the getaway vehicle. Catherine, Grissom and I went to talk with the teenage daughter, Tina.

-I don’t know why I didn’t get blood on my pajamas, I just didn’t.

-But your statement says that you bent down and hugged your mother, who was bleeding profusely –Catherine stated- Then you ran out, tripping over your father’s body in the upstairs hallway.

-But there was no blood on you –Grissom looked at her.

-I saw my family dead, I was scared.. I ran to the neighbors. That is the truth.

-The evidence is telling us a different story.

-Guys, Nick matched the matches found in the back of the house with the matches from a suspect –Jim Brass entered the room- Kid’s name is Jesse Overton, he time shares the scooter, he admits to having sex with your girl and he’s asking for a lawyer. I want to get a warrant and search his house.

-I want to see my sister –Tina said nervously- You don’t understand, I need to speak with her.

-She won’t speak, the doctor says it’s from trauma. –I said, unable to contain myself anymore- ¿What happened, Tina? ¿Did she catch your boyfriend killing your family?

Apparently, Brass found the getaway vehicle dismantled by pieces tossed in the trash at the main suspect’s house, and that wasn’t the only thing, he also found bloodstained jeans. Genius criminal. We got to do a polygraph test even though we already knew it was him, but we wanted to know the truth. This time, the whole team was behind the observation glass and a professional asked the questions, but we wrote them down.

-¿Did Tina Collins approached you at school and asked you to kill her family?

-Yes.

-¿Did you kill her family?

-Yes.

-¿Did Tina let you in the front door the night of the killings?

-Yes.

-¿Did she already have a knife for you?

-No, she let me choose.

-¿Did you use that knife to kill Barbara Collins, Mr. Collins and both sons?

-Yes.

-¿Did Tina Collins tell you she wanted them dead so you could see each other?

-Yes.

After the last question, we all left the room and sat on the benches outside. Brass was in charge of talking to the professional about the test. It didn’t take long for him to come out with the result sheet.

-Well, the sick bastard was on the open up except your last question –he explained- Operator says his respiratory reactions were inconsistent. He’s lying.

-We got them both –Nick said- I don’t much care why they did it.

-I’m with you there –Warrick agreed.

-I care –Grissom mumbled- I don’t like holes. ¿What are they hiding?

After Grissom reviewed all the evidence again, he found something that was the reason for me to return to the hospital. He found a silver necklace with an engraved buffalo on it. I followed my boss’s orders, so I took the ultraviolet camera and went to Brenda Collins’ room.

-This is a very special camera because it can see deep into your skin, can see things nobody can see –I explained to her- ¿How about if I take a picture of me first, okay?

I raised my arm and photographed it for her to see that it didn’t hurt. She nodded and smiled slightly, so with her permission, I untied the knot of the medical gown she was wearing and lowered to her shoulders.

-¿Are you ready?

She nodded again with a paralyzing look, and then I took the picture. The most important thing was to reveal the photograph and discover if our theory was correct and if it was, it was a tragedy. Sadly, the photo reveal confirmed it.

Despite having both of them, we had to talk to the teenage sister, Tina Collins, one last time to tell her that we knew what happened and why they did it. Grissom and Brass entered the interrogation room and showed Tina her sister’s picture. She put her hand on her mouth and closed her eyes.

-We have forensic evidence that your father sexually abused your sister –Grissom said- We also know that he was in her room the night of the murders.  

-¿How can you tell?

-Blood drops –he answered- They fall a certain way depending on the motion of the victim. Something horrible happened in that house, ¿didn’t it Tina?.. Long before the night of the murders.

-That was the last night he was gonna touch her –she said in an angry tone.

-¿But why your mother and why your brothers?

-Because they should have protected me –she changed her tone from anger to sadness- My father.. I was young, I learned to deal but when he went for my daughter..

Dead silence. Desolation and pain filled our silence as we exchanged looks.

-¿Brenda is..? –Grissom couldn’t finish his question- ¿And who is..?

-¿The father? –she finished for him- I was 13 and nobody noticed that my clothes were getting bigger. ¿Nice, huh? Brenda may hate me for what I did but I protected her.

After Tina went back to jail and Brenda was taken to Family Services, it was when I allowed myself to collect my things and finish the day. When I got to the locker room, I saw Grissom gathering his things and Nick sitting on the bench with an ice pack on his hand.

-It will be back in normal in 24 hours –Grissom said to him.

-Normal would be nice.

Books

1. Desperation - Stephen King/ Regulators - Stephen King

Much like TGWDLM and Black Friday, Desperation/Regulators are two books that take place in alternative universes, featuring similar characters but different plots.

Desperation is about a place where the seams between worlds are thin. A horrific creature known as Tak is released and takes human form by hijacking some of the town's residents. The forces of good orchestrate a confrontation between this ancient evil and a group of unsuspecting travelers led by David Carter, a young boy who speaks to God. 

The conflict between Webby/Hannah and Wiggly/Linda reminds me of the conflict between God/ David and Tak/town’s residents.

Regulators is about four vans containing shotgun-wielding "regulators" who terrorize a suburban street, cold-bloodedly killing anyone foolish enough to venture outdoors. Houses mysteriously transform into log cabins and the street now ends in what looks like a child's hand-drawn western landscape. Masterminding this sudden onslaught is the evil creature Tak, who has taken over the body of an autistic boy whose parents were killed in a drive-by shooting several months earlier. 

2. The Shining - Stephen King

Jack Torrance, an aspiring writer and recovering alcoholic accepts a position as the off-season caretaker of the historic Overlook Hotel. His wife and young son accompany him on this job. His on Danny Torrance, possesses "the shining", an array of psychic abilities that allow Danny to see the hotel's horrific past. After a winter storm leaves them snowbound, the supernatural forces inhabiting the hotel influence Jack's sanity, leaving his wife and son in incredible danger. 

Hannah’s powers remind me of Danny’s shining ability. Her “two doors, not one” is akin to Danny’s “Redrum.”

3. Needful Things - Stephen King

A little curio shop opens for business in the town of Castle Rock. Its mysterious proprietor, Leland Gaunt, seems to have something for everyone. The heart’s desire can easily be found among the curiosities in exchange for a little money and—at the specific request of Leland Gaunt—a whole lot of menace against their fellow neighbors. No one takes heed of the little sign hanging on the wall: Caveat emptor, let the buyer beware. 

Much like how in Black Friday, people are desperately seeking a Wiggly due to a void in their lives, Needful Things explores the how far people would go to keep the material things that fill a void in their life 

4. Station Eleven -  Emily St. John Mandel

One snowy night a famous Hollywood actor slumps over and dies on-stage during a production of King Lear. Hours later, the world as we know it begins to dissolve due to the spread of a disease. Moving back and forth in time, this novel charts the strange twists of fate that connect five people: the actor, the man who tried to save him, the actor's first wife, his oldest friend, and a young actress with the Travelling Symphony, caught in the cross-hairs of a dangerous self-proclaimed prophet. 

Station Eleven focuses on people trying to survive but in hopeful way. The whole book feels like What if Tomorrow Comes, with everyone coming around to comfort each other and thinking about how to move on. It’s a beautiful exploration of humanity. 

TV Shows

1. Stranger Things (specifically season 3)

In a small town where everyone knows everyone, Will Byers disappears near a top-secret government laboratory. On the same night, a strange young girl with telekinetic powers appears at a diner in the town. Dark government agencies and seemingly malevolent supernatural forces converge on the town.

Much like Black Friday, the third season features a girl with powers, creatures from other dimensions, Russians and lots of running around a mall.

Movies

1. Silence of the Lambs 

Young F.B.I. trainee Clarice Starling is assigned to help find a missing woman to save her from an elusive serial killer nicknamed "Buffalo Bill." Hoping to attain a clearer perception of the killer's modus operandi, Clarice reluctantly accepts the help of the brilliant psychiatrist and cannibalistic mass murderer, Dr Hannibal Lecter. 

The movie features the famous line “It puts the lotion on its skin or it gets the hose again.” Feast and Famine seems to reference this line through “It puts the toy into the plastic / It bags it up with gift receipt.”

We have thus far discerned that the dissimilar archetypes stretching from Aries to Cancer contribute vital components to the anatomy of one’s Self. These lay the foundations for a an ego successfully purged of carnal qualities like evil and envy and now confident enough in its spiritual and psychic grounding to begin a lifelong ascent along the socio-political tiers of culture. Male lions who have just taken over a pride will put to practice their narcissistic sense of self-adoration by actively hunting out and killing cubs fathered by other males. Many afflicted Leos will often express the exact same sentiment via more socially conventional and acceptable means by unconsciously grovelling in pools of arrogance or using their privileged rank to belittle or demote others. In such instances, the larger-than-life persona that Leo usually emanates inverts and becomes a stereotypical self-loving and egotistical one in which its own little world is far more profound and significant than the majesty that is the greater cosmos and the Godhead itself. When mountains of first-rate arrogance and fanaticism like these prop up, the other archetypes of the zodiac battle fiercely to raze them to the ground and knock some humility back into the Lion.

Remember to laugh and crack a few jokes along the way as well. We need to able to laugh at ourselves, at our misfortunes, at our problems and miseries, otherwise we become too entrenched in the lamentable fate of the human condition. Some say that I’m full of myself and that the only thing that concerns me is self-love and personal satisfaction. While it is true that I like to stand out and do at times appropriate others for my own visibility and self-promotion, nobody should ever dare to call me heartless or selfish; I do, contrary to what others believe about me, let others bask in their moment of glory and give my all for those who steal my heart. Reputation is of upmost importance; for me, there is no value in a privileged rank if it is attained through dishonest or questionable means and plagued by infamy. People born under this sign are usually animated, extroverted types that enjoy writing and composing a show, along with being the star of that show. All of us carry an inherent need for validation in a world which is moving at a million miles per minute and eternally threatening to leave us behind, but this need appears to be a lot more prevalent and obvious in the composition of Leo. People made an unconscious connection between the wheel of heaven and the deluge of waters connected with great rivers like the Nile which seemed to reach a crescendo when the former turned to reveal the stars of Leo along the horizon. As symbols of strength, leadership, and power, the iconography was soon adopted by emperors, kings, and other people in privileged positions of authority as symbolic inferences of the aforementioned qualities. The Tarot also assimilated this zodiacal sign into its hidden knowledge system under the tutelage of the Strength card, borrowing the image of a woman taming a lion directly from the Denderah Zodiac. Perhaps the most famous depiction of Leo in the Western world was championed by the Venetians, who used the image as part of a winged insignia (the Lion of St. Mark) that graces countless castles, fortresses, and statues commissioned during the High Middle Ages.

The second symbol, an astrological shorthand for the zodiacal sign, encompasses only the curved tail of the totemic animal. This may symbolise the lion’s mane, a physical characteristic that evokes regal qualities like strength, heroism, and governance. On the other hand it may be a stand in for the heart, a body part over which the sign rules. Most of us will be familiar with the notion that the human heart is a synonym for courage, truth, and unconditional love. From this esoteric perspective, the abbreviated glyph might also be interpreted as a pictogram expressing only these specific aspects of the archetype.

New Look Sabres: 2019 NHL Draft

Rasmus Dahlin is a hard act to follow. I think part of the reason Alex Nylander went through such Sabres popular opinion hell was because he was the first round pick the year after Jack Eichel’s Draft. Maybe that’s me projecting because my little Sabres heart hadn’t been broken for a while at that point. I really only jumped on the Sabres wagon at the beginning of the decade so my biggest lived disappointment in this team was the 2011 First Round against the Flyers. Picking Alex Nylander was a curve ball that year and he didn’t pan out immediately. That failing to hit on high draft picks was part of then-General Manager Tim Murray’s undoing and part of what ruined rebuild 1.0. That’s not to mention how bad GMTM was for Nylander’s development thrusting him right into the AHL. You couldn’t put all that on Nylander. I hoped so hard going into this Draft that whoever gets drafted the year after Dahlin isn’t under that kind of microscope right away. Nylander had a tiny little renaissance during his callup last season but he’s still not quite there yet. He’s about to enter what-the-hell-are-you territory but to be very honest his name coming up in trade talks made me a little angry. Hold back your snide tweets, apparently they’re informing the real insiders! I can’t imagine anything like the Nylander Saga repeating itself, but this is the Buffalo Sabres we’re talking about.

The Draft last year felt like a coronation for Sabres fans but just because we’re not getting a generational talent this go around doesn’t mean this draft isn’t ripe for drama. Rewind back about a month and Buffalo was once again the home of the NHL Combine. The event that now will be in Buffalo for several years to come saw the genesis of a few Draft narratives for the Sabres. The most notable one is the Alex Turcotte story. Apparently Sabres brass interviewed Turcotte and… his dad? The reports were conflicting but Turcotte definitely represented a big blip on the radar. The young Mittelstadt-color-palate-swapped center is from Chicagoland and was probably not likely falling any further than 7 – Buffalo’s first pick. Turcotte was a popular choice to go to the Blackhawks in many mock drafts because of the Chicago connection. Jason Botterill and the funky bunch also interviewed one London Knights forward Conor McMichael. Sabres bloggers smarter than I say he was an intriguing option for the other first round pick... that’s if we have that second first round pick because with other teams wheeling and dealing for a week plus going into the Draft Jason Botterill was quiet. There had been rumors galore connected to Buffalo from Tampa to Vancouver which made the lack of movement that much more peculiar. Add onto all this the debut of a Vegas Gold look for the Sabres “Golden Season” instead of royal blue and it was a wild week going into the Draft.

Jack Hughes and Kappo Kakko went first overall as expected. The Alex Turcotte watch was short lived, but he didn’t go third overall to Chicago as many predicted. He had to wait all the way to number 5 when the LA Kings scooped him up. Conor McMichael went 25th overall to Washington but this is a Sabres blog so you’re probably waiting for some Sabres talk. With the 7th overall pick the Buffalo Sabres selected WHL center Dylan Cozens. Once again, smarter bloggers than I say that selection was solid because the first round of this draft was really three tiers: the top two, two through about ten and then everyone else. The Red Wings threw a curve ball and selected Disney Channel star Moritz Seider throwing off everyone’s top ten but for the most part there weren’t many surprises. I was on the Cole Caulfield bandwagon, but he probably wasn’t a wise choice at seven. When he began to drop I even entertained the idea of Botterill trading up with that second first rounder to get him, but this was not one of those drafts and he went 15th overall to… Montreal. Ugh. How about something funny? The Panthers picked goalie Spencer Knight with their 13th overall. That was funny too, but this joke is a Sabres joke: Cozens is the first WHL draft pick in Jason Botterill’s time as General Manager of the Buffalo Sabres. This is a real, deep-cut Sabres joke but there is some humor to that. I think the social media guy for the team knew it too because one of the first photos from them after his pick was Sam Reinhart greeting him. Sam is the last WHL guy to be drafted onto the Sabres. Again, it’s deep cut joke about how Botts hates the WHL so it’s not going to get the whole room but there you go: Humor. I’m not going to pretend to know how to project out Cozens because again, I’m not the smart guy in the room; but I will say it is great to start to replenish the center depth in the organization which dropped off a cliff only a few guys down the depth chart.

The Sabres used the 31st overall pick to… just make a pick. No trades in the first round. As Day One wound down the swell of energy that it may happen dissipated and they picked USHL Defenseman Ryan Johnson. I am all for picking lefthanded D to help build up that side of the defense but the buzz around the pick was a guy with a Russian name who will certainly make me regret not knowing his name. Johnson could’ve easily fallen into the second round, but the pick was in and another defenseman is in the pipeline. Trades, at least the variety from the Sabres, were scarce in the remaining rounds on Saturday. The Sabres traded some late round picks but no real consequential trades on Draft weekend for Buffalo put a little bit of a damper on it all for me. I don’t really subscribe to the idea the yet-to-be-announced salary cap number is really what’s stopping trades. PK Subban got traded to the Devils for a bunch of no names and low picks while we wondered if Sabres 3rd round pick goalie Erik Portillo is in fact named after a type of pepper. The lack of movement right now isn’t something worth panicking about but if we’re sitting here next Monday on Free Agency Day wondering if we’re crazy I’m not going to blame anyone for hitting the panic button. Botterill has signaled a renewed faith in Rasmus Ristolainen probably egged on by the new coach so… you can fall either way on whether the OG Rasmus needs to go. I lean toward trade him but that doesn’t have to be right now. We’ll address all this stuff in the free agency blog so let’s take a look at who else was picked. I mentioned Portillo and we won’t see him even in Rochester for a couple years but that’s fine, the goalie depth was beginning to get shallow. Botts said openly he doesn’t want to rush Ukko Pekka-Lukkonen who will probably make his Rochester Americans debut this coming season. That is smart and frustrating because goalies take a long time to develop when you do it right but… uh… did you watch the second half of last season? Part of that collapse was the goalie tandem coming back down to earth hard. Folks were clamoring for UPL, probably a little too hastily but that’s what eight years out of the playoffs will do to you. I am not particularly jazzed about the other three guys we got. You take flyers on guys that far down in the draft and the chances are better than not all three of these guys I am about to mention don’t make the NHL: Aaron Huglen, Filip Cederqvist and Lukas Rousek. Hopefully one of them is a diamond in the rough. Perhaps it’s unfair for us to be so underwhelmed. Sean Tierney at Charting Hockey placed the Sabres in a top six of teams who did well at the Draft. He’s worth follow if you want to understand how you can make a graph of average likelihood to make the NHL because Lord knows I can’t explain that.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)

Disney’s production has more amazing cartoon movies than we can possibly gather here, but this is the story they’ll always be recognized for – the tale of the beautiful, wandering princess, the mean queen, the handsome savior, and the sidekick band of helpful and funny dwarfs.

The awesome fairytale written by the Grimm brothers was not only the kicker hand-drawn animation of Walt Disney, but also the first animation movie in the history of the moving pictures industry.

Time can do nothing against it – after almost a century, you shed some light over the old painting, and it springs to life!

Fantasia (1940)

This great animation film brings together the best of the Disney world, Tchaikovsky’s music, and magic. You will be delighted by the unique mixture of Western classical sounds and the visual game of Disney’s characters while Leopold Stokowski leads the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Dumbo (1941)

A filmmaker from Pixar shared an interesting story with us – his mother who could barely understand English, watched Dumbo and understood what his mom wanted as she interlocked trunks with him inside a circus cage. This is what makes this movie a proper animation hero – you understand it without words!

Bambi (1942)

Bambi marked some of the best moments in Disney’s history and top animated movies, such as its mother being shot by a hunter and leaving the tiny sweet fawn to fend. More than a cartoon, Bambi is a lyrical and beautiful affirmation of the miracle of life, and stands for values such as family, friends, and our glorious nature. The titular doe of this movie loses its innocence as it’s mother dies, but also grows up virtuously, gains knowledge, and becomes capable of depending itself.

Robin Hood (1973)

Robin Hood was the first animation movie to be released after Walt Disney died. At the time, it was considered to be an embarrassing, on-budget piece, but time reversed that to one of the best animation movies of all times.

We all know the story of Robin Hood – the hero of the little people who steals from the rich. He was animated several times, but none of his adaptations was as charming and memorable as the one made by Disney’s animators.

The concept was the same as in fairytales – whistling rooster narrators, a maid for Robin to fall in love with (Marian), and a furry squad of brave friends helping Robin recover what Prince John has stolen.

Belladonna of Sadness (1973)

What inspired Japanese director Eiichi Yamamoto to create this unbelievable psychosexual animation was Jules Michelet’s book on witchcraft and feminism called La Sorciere.

The beautiful yet disturbing piece was released in 1973, and the ones who saw it certainly remember how shocking it was for the standards of that time.

In 2016, there was a new Belladonna release in the U.S., and it had pretty much the same effect on people. Even modern society finds such animated fantasy traumatizing, and is not prepared to embrace how scandalous it is.

For instance, the heroine gets visually assaulted, and some viewers may find that disturbing.

In short, you may like or dislike the story behind it, but this animation is certainly a masterpiece. It was created in a unique and delicate manner, using a pleasing pastel palette of watercolors the human eye enjoys.

Street of Crocodiles (1986)

Movie production in the 80s was almost entirely digital, but that didn’t prevent visionaries Timothy and Stephen Quay from drawing one of world’s best stop-motion pieces. Their short animation features a hatched-faced puppet with a decaying body that navigates a bunch of dancing screws, and creates a feeling of being stuck in a vivid dream that won’t let you wake up.

The piece attracts interest even today, especially among surrealist and stop-motion artist. The Quays were actually inspired by Jan Svankmajer and the writer Bruno Schultz, two of Poland’s best known names in the surrealism world.

My Neighbor Totoro (1988)

Two years after Street of Crocodiles, the world was introduced to an even better animated film -My Neighbor Totoro. It has been 30 years since, and this movie still lifts up the spirit of those watching it, as it features one of the most heart-warming stories.

The main characters are two adorable Japanese children leaving their home to find magic. Along the way, they discover a wondrous cat bus and a gentle giant named Totoro who helps them accomplish their mission.

This makes Totoro one of the best cartoon movies suitable for all ages: everyone could enjoy a supernatural, slightly uninhibited delight.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988)

Robert Zemeckis is the name behind this groundbreaking, hybrid crime/comedy movie. First of its kind, this movie treats the murder of a bunny, and features an iconic toon-loathing detective working on the case.

‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ broke all records of production expense. It cost more than any film produced during the 80s, and became the 2nd highest-grossing movie in 1988.

Akira (1988)

Kanye West appointed Akira as the leader among its favorite films, and many of us can agree with him. The incredibly detailed sci-fi movie doesn’t stay behind names such as Matrix or the Blade Runner, while its imaginative urban setting display makes it the finest Japanese animation ever created. In fact, Akira has become a cult with millions of followers worldwide.

The main protagonist is a Neo-Tokyo teen biker called Tetsuo. Tetsuo’s mission is to release the unlawfully imprisoned psychic Akira, and his way there features the best action scenes ever to be seen in the animation world.

The Little Mermaid (1989)

There’s almost no girl out there who didn’t dream of becoming a mermaid, and they own this to one of Disney’s most compelling stories. This romantic movie follows the life of beautiful mermaid Ariel whose dream was to have legs and to live on land.

It is with Ariel that Disney’s renaissance took off. We all associated the Faustian tale with making important choices in our life, such as the one Ariel made when giving up her voice to pursue being human.

Her love story with charming prince Eric provided us one of the most memorable movie soundtracks, and we learnt to love her despite of her stubbornness. This is why The Little Mermaid still counts as a favorite Disney movie.

Beauty and the Beast’ (1991)

Do you remember the love story of Bella and the Beast? Next to the inspiring story of Bella’s pure soul discovering the prince inside a buffalo, this movie caused a drastic change in the world of best animation, causing many people to take it seriously.

Looking at the magnificent ballroom sequence and the couple’s first dance, we found it hard to believe that the film was computer-generated. Actually, Beauty and the Beast was so good that it became the first animated movie to earn a Best Picture Nomination.

Aladdin (1992)

Yup, these were the golden years of the Disney production of animated films! Following the success of Ariel, Bella, and their prices, animators recreated another iconci character, and that was Aladdin.

Prior to this movie hitting screens, many people were unaware of the inspiring and romantic rags-to-riches story, despite of it being a classic 1001 Nights tale.

It follows the dreams of an open-vested, homeless, and hopelessly in love boy who’d set an eye on a rich and beautiful princess. As hard as his evil enemy Jafar tries to get her, she still falls for Aladdin, the boy with the magic carpet, Robin Williams-voiced genie, and enormous heart.

FernGully (1992)

FernGully is another classic in the animation world that treats the destruction of Earth and all creatures that live on it. It was created for children, and they loved how protagonist fairy Christa fought against the destruction of her Australian rainforest.

Her assistant was a boy named Zak, and her enemy was a logging company attempting to wreck her world. You may find it interesting to know that this movie inspired Avatar and the creation of princess Mononoke.

Porco Rosso (1992)

Ain’t this a weird film! And yet, a lovely one! Hayao Miyazaki presented us the story of an ex WWI fighter pilot from Italy, and that pilot happened to be a funny red pig. For protagonist Porco Rosso, being a pig is nothing bad – he still canoodles with beautiful ladies assisted by Fio, his mechanic protégée. This film is both engaging and historically rich, and is definitely worth watching!

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

As his projections show, Tim Burton comes up with the weirdest pairings ever – beetles and juice, hands and scissors, and this time even Hallowing and Christmas. In this movie, we get to meet the pumpkin king and his sudden Christmas joy. And right when you think it can’t get better, you hear Danny Elfman’s live performance of ‘What’s This’.

The Lion King (1994)

Here’s another of Disney’s major works with a Shakespearean background. Instead of Hamlet, we’re acquainted with a lion family and their friends from the jungle, and we get to see some of life’s most important values on screen.

The film also has iconic musical sequences – the renowned soundtrack, for instance, is many people’s association of a beautiful childhood.

The music was written by Hans Zimmer, a legend among composers who actually manages to turn emotions into sounds. As Simba and Nala tussle in the grass, their love warms our hearts, the same as Scar’s betrayal makes us angry and eager to help Simba discover that he has no fault for his father’s death.

As we watch on, we get to adore Simba’s little Hakuna Matata friend, or the buds Timon and Pumbaa as they help him become king of the jungle.

Toy Story (1995)

Toy Story is Pixar’s first and arguably ultimate achievement. It was such a success that it turned the company into a film franchise, and it set the standards of how a perfect movie should look.

We will remember it by the iconic ‘personalities’ of Woody, Hamm, Rex, and Buzz; and for its immense contribution to what toys meant in our lives. According to many viewers, Toy Story is the best animated movie ever!

Perfect Blue (1997)

Japanese director Satoshi Kon made a pretty successful animated prototype of legendary Black Swan. This movie is far from a pass-time show, and we wouldn’t recommend it for kids in any case. Its protagonist is pop star Mima who decides to try out acting.

Her fans are furious about it, in particular a creepy stalker that tries to invade her life in many different ways. That, however, is not the worst thing to happen to Mima – she starts tormenting herself with her alter ego – an imaginative ‘her’ that questions her decisions, and brings her in all sorts of compromising positions.

This movie is sexually explicit, compromising, and even haunting, and gives us a pretty good overview of celebrities’ troubles with media violence, exploitation, and lack of personal space.

Hercules (1997)

What better than an animation to make Greek mythology fun? The epic tale of demigod Hercules and his parents Zeus and Hera inspired many professionals in the movie business to bring these characters to life, including beautiful Megara Hercules saves from evil ex-boyfriend Hades.

Even after 20 years, this is a movie every kid should watch – the movie that teaches us that strength is only good when used for a good cause.

Mulan (1998)

Remember the cute Chinese heroine who joined the army to ensure her dad doesn’t have to go? Hardly did any of us forget her epic appearance on gender’s funeral to ask if there were Huns to fight!

Mulan was also the long-awaited Asian reappearance on screen, and a role model for young women who didn’t abide to sexist norms. She was noble, brave, and extremely fun to watch – just the way we’d all like to be! Along the way, she even fell in love with Captain Li Shang, and gave this amazing story the love crown it deserves.

What made the Mulan movie even more memorable were the voices of the protagonists – the mini dragon Mu Shu was voiced by amazing Eddie Murphy, while the voice behind Mulan’s beautiful interpretation of ‘Reflection’ was none other than Christina Aguilera. Could it get any better?

Princess Mononoke (1998)

Princess Mononoke is not a typical and soothing animation movie. The visceral and dark story is often considered as Miyazak’s best movie, and there are many reasons for that.

Following Ashitaka’s efforts to reintroduce peace between the generous gods and destructive humans, you are provided with a truly imaginative and epic visual experience. This is why Princess Mononoke became the 7th highest-grossing animation of all times.

The Iron Giant (1999)

The Iron Giant is a much underestimated animation movie, and we believe this is so because of it being misunderstood. Rather than attaching an ‘antiwar’ label on it, we should look deeper under the surface and understand that Brad Bird’s guns are not simply killing machines – he questions how it’d be if they had a soul. Interesting, isn’t it? Put it on your list!

Chicken Run (2000)

Chicken run is not just the funny story of a loud rooster and his fellow chickens escaping certain death – it is the stop-motion parable and homage of The Great Escape that shows us how the wreckage of capitalism looks like.

It is also a very well produced piece whose scrappy heroines are to be quoted and remembered, and it definitely deserves a look.

Monsters, Inc. (2001)

If you’re into animation, there’s no way you missed Monsters, Inc. Its memorable snappy interplay and dizzying action sequences guarantee some serious fun to the viewer, as protagonists Sulley and his single-eyed associate Mike scare children to help Monstropolis.

Ain’t it just great to see these beasts’ freaking out as fearless moppet Boo takes over their turf?

Shrek (2001)

What made Shrek so popular is without doubt his suitability for audiences of all ages. Children thought of it as a fantastic fairy tale of distressed damsels, dragons, castles, and a princess to be saved. Adults, on the other side, enjoyed the amazing pop culture references this animation had to offer, in particular the great soundtrack that pandered exactly to them.

This movie also has one of the best acting crews behind it – DreamWorks animation chose Cameron Diaz to voice Princess Fiona, Mike Myers to voice the titular ogre, and incredible Eddie Murphy to voice the faithful donkey steed. Could it possibly get better?

Spirited Away (2002)

Spirited Away was based on Alice in Wonderland, and it was so well execute that it won an Oscar. The legendary tale of a wondering little girl and her magical ride into the land of the Unknown never stopped fascinating people, an effect Joe Hisaishi ensured with his new ideas and great moving instrumentals.

The Triplets of Belleville (2003)

‘The Triplets of Belleville’ is signed by ‘Illusionist’ producer Sylvain Chomet. It is a family movie of a concerned grandma looking for her grandson, and a piece aiming to warm everybody’s heart. It will impress you from the very first opening sequence, and you will definitely want to watch it again.

Finding Nemo (2003)

Inspired by the great success of under-the-sea animations, Pixar created what’s perhaps the most fascinating story of its kind – Finding Nemo. Protagonist Nemo is in fact a small clown fish that ventures through the scary sea to find its father, and whose journey is paired with the most exciting adventures.

Nemo meets surprisingly friendly sharks, cute turtles, and other sea creatures that need his help – the most memorable encounter, however, is the one with space cadet Dory, a character viewers loved so much that Pixar made a separate movie about it!

The Incredibles (2004)

Any animation expert out there can confirm that animation movies are not all about visual. A large portion of their success depends on the story they tell, and Incredibles is a movie that can prove that.

The great comic book inspired an even better movie, as it brought former superheroes Bob and Helen Paar and their family on our screens. We were simply thrilled by villain Syndrome’s crime-fighting revenge, and we can easily compare the action in this anime to any well-rated fighter movie.

RATATOUILLE (2007)

Here’s one more of Pixar’s masterpieces that combines great visuals, intriguing stories, and memorable characters. It treats the unusual alliance of rodent Remy and kitchen assistant Linguini, both working on Remy’s dream to become the chef of a great French Restaurant.

The best part of the story – their dishes manage to fascinate critic Anton Ego, just the way their personality fascinates the audiences!

WALL-E (2008)

The Academy Award for Best Animated Feature is not the only great achievement of WALL-E. This movie was also recognized for acknowledging the dangers of pollution and human waste.

WALL-E is the main character in this animation – the Earth’s last robot that’s been alone for 700 years, and has thus developed a very curious ‘personality’. The loner is challenged by a newer robot model coming down to Earth, and the two of them create what’s today one of Disney’s most charming works.

Up (2009)

‘Up’ has just the right features to delight all audiences – funny characters and exciting chases to make kids laugh; and a precious adventurous experience for the parenting squad. Widower Carl and wilderness explorer and adventurist Carl take us on an unpredictable journey to South America, and lift our spirit up with every achievement. This is a movie you shouldn’t miss!

Coraline (2009)

Stop-motion animations company Laika picked an interesting book to adapt: Coraline by Neil Gaiman. As a result, they created a scary, yet very exciting movie, showing us how frustrated kid Coraline escapes from her parents and falls into trouble.

Coraline reaches a sinister and creepy world of Stepford-like replacements, including a terrorizing spider lady that follows her around. All she wants is to come back home, and viewers are there to join the journey. Certainly a piece of art!

The Princess and the Frog (2009)

The Princess and the Frog was created by John Musker and Ron Clements, a popular cinema duo we’d have to thank for masterpieces like Moana or The Little Mermaid.

Their latest hand-drawn fairytale takes place in the jazz age, and follows the story of a waitress who’s in love with an enchanted prince (frog), and becomes a frog herself. Give it a try!

Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)

Fantastic Mr. Fox is based on Roald Dahl’s amazing fox story. Screenwriter Noah Baumbah teamed with popular filmmaker Wes Anderson to adapt this tale for our screens, and introduced us to the most popular movie fox ever.

This urban fox struggles to return to its natural wild habitat and save its community – a mission that may cause retaliation against other animal species, or facing one’s own mortality. Now there’s a movie packed with integrity and values that is suitable for all generations!

How To Train Your Dragon (2010)

‘How To Train Your Dragon’ is one more of Roger Deakins’ cinematography legends – a thrilling and adventurous tale with beautiful painterly visuals, fully 3D enabled flying sequences, and a story to remember.

Instead of picking a celebrity crew to maintain the pop-culture gag, DreamWorks focused on the sequel and let the story lead the way, and that’s where the magic began. The central moment in this animation is the unique friendship of a Viking boy and a dragon, something that’ll remind us all of our beloved childhood pets.

Batman: Under the Red Hood (2010)

Watching the Under the Red Hood movie, you get a rare chance to experience the real Batman flick without the Joker taking over. In this occasion, Batman tries to defeat an evil vigilante who stops him from restoring order in Gotham City.

We warn you – the movie comes with some serious action and bloodshed, but it is a genuine delight for supporters of this genre.

MONSTERS UNIVERSITY (2013)

This is the tale of Mike Wazowski, a wannabe Scarer who enrolls at a University of Monsters. The movie follows his rivalry with natural-born Scarer Sulley, as a result of which they’re both kicked out of the program.

What they have to do to get reaccepted is to win the program’s Scare Games. The challenge is – they have to join the least respected fraternity on campus (Oozma Kappa), and they have to work at the same time.

Frozen (2013)

Frozen won multiple awards for being the best animation film, and owes it to a variety of factor. This tremendous piece warmed our hearts with wonderful characters, as well as a perfected storyline presented to us with amazing graphics.

For those who haven’t watched it, Frozen follows the epic journey of the fearless and positive Anna, as her faithful reindeer Sven and mountain man Kristoff help her find her sister Elsa.

They’re headed to the kingdom of eternal winter Arendelle where Elsa’s icy powers are trapped and endangered. To get there, Anna and Kristoff face a number of terrible obstacles, including snowmen and mystical trolls. Of course, they win in the end.

Ernest & Celestine (2014)

Ernest & Celestine is an engaging animation film that treats the topic of stereotypes and prejudice. It introduces us to the unusual friendship between street musician Ernest (a bear) and dentist Celestine (mouse) that doesn’t resemble any previous U.S. movie production.

World of Tomorrow (2015)

World of Tomorrow is one of the best short sci fi movies you’ll ever watch. You will need exactly 16 minutes to explore Don Hertzfeldt’s work of art where he showcases his deep admiration for the sci-fi genre.

The Netflix blockbuster explores a variety of popular topics. As sweet little Emily looks into the future, she meets her own grown-up clone, and joins a memorable, sentimental journey to learn more about her.

Basically, World of Tomorrow has two roles – entertaining toddlers who identify themselves with Emily, and taking adults on a futuristic trip where they question the ideas of cloning, virtual reality, and time travel.

Anomalisa (2015)

Anomalisa is a very romantic drama/comedy brought to us by director Duke Johnson and screenwriter Charlie Kaufman. At first sight, it is an ordinary love story between a motivational speaker and an ordinary girl named Lisa. What makes it so popular then?

The team did an excellent job putting longing and anxiety on screen, and promoting this film as an accurate study of human character, an analysis of modern malaise, and, well…a parody. The takeaway message to remember this movie by is – Keep going, no matter what!

Ups, we almost forgot. This movie is hilarious!

Inside Out (2015)

You all remember Inside Out, the masterpiece of animation that won the ‘Best Animated Feature Film’ Academy Award. The leading character is Riley, a girl with personified emotions ready to convey a simple, but meaningful message: We are all human beings, and life doesn’t always treat us nice. This is why critics in Cannes went all crazy about it.

The Little Prince (2016)

Mark Osborne used Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s classic The Little Prince to create an exciting story about a girl looking for her childhood. The movie is respected for its excellent blend of computer-generated animations and paper cutouts.

Tower (2016)

Many Hollywood movies treat attacks and incidents in the U.S, but what is really special about Tower is that it does so using animation. The storyline goes back to the 1966 shootings at Texas University, and it blends in a unique way animated characters, genuine broadcasts, and personal testimonies.

The Red Turtle (2017)

Michaël Dudok de Wit, the Dutch animator to sign this piece, likes to refer to it as an original ode to nature. This hand-drawn miracle is nothing like the previous works of Studio Ghibli – it displays the love story between a mute castaway and a shape-shifting turtle, and it features no words at all.

COCO (2017)

COCO will be remembered for many things, but most of all for its heart-melting soundtrack ‘Remember me’. This was Pixar’s pioneer musical film, and a piece that won viewers’ hearts as soon as it appeared.

The layered and colorful story takes place in Mexico, where young Miguel Rivera fights to become a renowned musician. His family bans music for him, but he persists pursuing a career like the one of his idol Ernesto de la Cruz.

Doing so, Miguel discovers the secrets in his family’s history, and his charming friend Hector from the Land of the Dead helps him all along.

Have you ever thought that there might be a possibility of you being a psychic?Because you had this feelings that something bad might happen. Like when you’re in a class and the teacher was about to ask someone to answer a question, you would have this unsettling feeling and got chosen. No? Maybe, it was just me.

I walked down the school hall with the unsettling feelings with me. It was even weirder when I stepped on to the hallway. Everyone turned looking at me. I walked in and everyone literally parted like the Red Sea. Some of them was smiling and holding up their phones.

Okay, strange morning. I was a foot away from my locker when a guy wearing a mask in all black attire handed me a note. He didn’t say a word and leave. I looked at the note it was written.

The thing that came in to my mind was Ethan. Was it pun intended? I looked around the hallways and everyone was still looking at me expectedly. Is Ethan going to humiliate me by not giving a good clue where to meet him?

Unfortunately, I’m Y/n and I’m smart enough to figure it out. It was the field, I mean that’s where the game happened, isn’t it not? Smiling to myself and giving a pat to my shoulder, mentally. I headed to the field reminding myself it’s on.

I reached the field and everyone was following behind me. There was another guy in a mask wearing literally the same outfit as the one before. He handed me another note.

We live our high school life literally on this field. We share the same position as captains. Meaning we are always the center of attention. Center.

I walked towards the center smiling and sat down the nearest bench. The other students followed and sat around the bench. I waited and soon my cheer team walked in wearing our school uniforms.

My best friend Michelle led the group. They were giving the whole school a routine. Everyone cheered and clapped. Okay, I felt a bit betrayed yet they did pretty good. Nevertheless, I was proud of them.

They finished the routine by putting their index finger on their lips, signaling the crowd to quiet down. Once the silence settled in, Michelle shouted. “EVERYONE MUST BE WONDERING WHY Y/N HAS BEEN GETTING NOTES THIS MORNING. WELL, PUT YOUR HANDS TOGETHER FOR OUR VERY OWN WILDCATS.”

Everyone clapped and cheered for whatever Michelle just said. Ethan’s teammates came running, even his twin brother Grayson. Yet, Ethan was nowhere in sight.

The boys were getting into formation. They were wearing our school jackets and started opening it them one by one.

It started from my left to the right. The team shouted all the letters together while one opening their jacket. Everyone cheered as they opened the jacket showing a simple white t-shirt with a letter printed on.

As soon as it was done. I felt a tap on my shoulder and I turned around. Ethan Dolan was standing there holding a freaking pompom, and said “Please?”

My lips curved inwardly trying so hard not to blush nor smile yet I decided I won’t be easy on him either. He literally made my head burned solving his clues. I raised my one of my eyebrows, “Please what Dolan?”

Ethan nodded his head and bit his inside cheek before he smirked down at me. He cleared his throat and shouted on top of his, “Y/N Y/L/N, WILL YOU MAKE ME THE HAPPIEST MAN ALIVE AND BE MINE?”

I was grinning ear to ear hearing him shouted those lines in front of the whole population of the school. He looked down and his face turned slightly red. He looked kinda anxious with how unresponsive I am. He added “Please.” Softly at the end.

“Of course, if you insist very much.” I stood up and I hugged Ethan. His muscles was tense as he seems surprised. After he relaxed and nuzzled his face in the crook my neck. Everyone was cheering and hollering behind.

He put his hand behind my back and pulled me closer. “Princess, never knew you’re so hard to get.” He chuckled against my neck and I felt his chest rumbling. I hugged him tighter and whispered back, “For your record, you’re quite smooth.” I chuckled back.

“WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE?!” Coach’s voice barked through the megaphone. We pulled away and coach shouted, “Dolan? Y/L/N?” He was confused. As we were not bickering and Ethan’s arm was wrapped around my waist.

“Yes, Coach.” Ethan answered.

Coach looked around and shook his head, a smile graced upon his face “I see, finally got past all this weird rivalry?”

Ethan looked down lovingly and I smiled back sweetly, “Yeah, couldn’t let the princess without her prince.” Ethan said as he squeezed my waist and I giggled.

Gosh, this is so cringe worthy.

Coach nodded his head and soon shouted, “Clean this place and everyone out of the field!” With his words everyone scurried inside the building. It was only the two of us.

“See you in Chemistry class, princess.” He leaned in, his warm lips touched against my cheek. He smiled and left. I was left astounded.

As I went back to my locker to grab my Chemistry books, people congratulated me along the way. Some girls told me to take good care of him. Some hugged me and said “Finally.”

When I looked over and I saw Michelle, she was already running towards me. She didn’t say congratulations nor did she hug me. She, however slapped my head saying, “Why didn’t you tell me any sooner?”

I looked at her confused, she laughed and said, “Don’t worry, Ethan explained it to the cheer team and his team.”

“What did he say?” I asked, knowing I have to be careful touching this topic.

“Don’t worry, No one judged the both of you. We kinda guessed it by then.” She batted her eyelashes. I looked at her baffled. I don’t get it at all.

“You guys dated behind us and finally decided to go on public, silly.” She slapped my arm this time. “Let’s head to Chem class.” She wiggled her eyebrows and dragged me to the class.

To be honest, I enjoy Chemistry class. The only thing I despise was that Ethan’s a part of this class and he’s doing well as well.

We started the class by Mr. Miguel’s normal pop quiz routine. It was during this time that Ethan and I would compete against each other. Who would submit earlier with a higher mark?

“Princess, let’s help each other.” Ethan whispered behind me.

“What? You can’t answer these questions yourself, Dolan?” I turned and teased him.

“Y/L/N! DOLAN! Quit flirting with each other.” Mr. Miguel shouted. I turned around immediately and went back answering the quiz. Ethan stood up, I put my arm out and held him back. I gave my paper to him, asking him to hand it over to Mr. Miguel as well.

He took the paper and rolled his eyes, “Anything, for the princess.” He walked towards the front desk and submitted our work. We waited for everyone else to be done.

After the pop quiz ended, he continued giving lectures about Hydrocarbons and stuffs like that. Ethan and I would constantly being the ones answering his questions. We were both determined to be the one who answered the most.

After, Mr. Miguel ended the discussion the bell rang. Before everyone was out Ethan stood up on the chair shouted, “A PARTY AT MY HOUSE, 7 TODAY!” Upon hearing this news everyone cheered.

Ethan sat down and turned his head towards me and said “Princess, you should come to my party today as my date. I’ll pick you up at 7.” I looked over at Michelle and she was squealing. I knew that I had no choice but to go.

No, Michelle did not come over to help me pick a dress. So yeah, I’m freaking out. I mean I should at least try to impress him, right? I should win this game.

I went to my wardrobe and pulled out dozens of clothing. I put on a simple plain red t-shirt and matching it with a black skater skirt. It looked pretty good.

I decided to just put my hair on a sleek ponytail and going with a simple natural look but finishing it off with my red lipstick. The red lipstick was just my icon. I couldn’t go out without it.

My phone vibrated, showing Ethan’s text.

Okay, I grabbed my phone and went downstairs. I opened the door revealing Ethan with his orange hoodie. How can someone be so perfect in just a simple hoodie?

I did a little twirl and asked, “How do I look?” feeling a bit uneasy. He stared at me eyes and smiled, a genuine one. “You look beautiful, princess.” He said sincerely.

For the first time, I liked hearing him calling me princess. “You don’t look that bad too, Dolan.” I replied back. He chuckled and guiding me towards his car.

He opened the passenger seat, motioning me to sit down. “Well, I guess chivalry is not yet dead.” I muttered quietly, clearly it wasn’t. He looked up and smirked, “As long as there’s Ethan Dolan, it will never be dead.” I laughed and went inside.

Throughout the whole ride, I was feeling quite anxious. Even if I was the head of the cheer team, I never really liked going to parties. It wasn’t my cup of tea. Ethan was quite nice.
