Probably cause he literally almost drowned.

Not that he was aware of it in the moment. There’s a reason fighter pilots are taught that one of the most important things after ejecting into the water is detaching the parachute. A RIO of the F-14 Tomcat became incapacitated due to the G-force after a high-speed ejection and was therefore unable to detach his parachute. He was pulled under and drowned.

This wasn’t the only case of drowning due to the parachute, there have been a number of aviators who survived the ejection but because they had been unconscious they were unable to ensure their parachute detached and drowned. Thanks to the technological advancements since then, there are systems that now automatically detach the parachute when it comes in contact with water. But in 1985 during the filming of Top Gun, this system was not around.

Barry Tubb, who plays Leonard “Wolfman” Wolfe said “Cruise came as close to dying as anybody on a set I’ve ever seen. They were refilling the camera or something, and luckily one of the frogmen in the chopper saw his chute ballooning out. He jumped in and cut Cruise loose right before he sank. They would have never found him. He would have been at the bottom of the ocean.”

Never have I ever seen a man who more accurately sums up sad wet cat in a photo.
