Hawker culture is so central to Singapore life that we have led a successful campaign to have the practice inscribed on the 2020 UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Now, McDonald’s Singapore has come out with three uniquely hawker-inspired burgers. Two Satay Burgers (沙爹汉堡) which are available now and Ha Cheong Gai Chicken Burger to arrive from 8th August 2024 onward.
Tumblr media
youtube
So on the way back home, I detoured to the McDonald’s nearest home and bought the Satay Chicken Burger Special (S$9.90) set meal with Crisscut Fries and upgraded (top up S$1.65) my drink to the Thai Milk Tea Frappé.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Satay Chicken Burger (沙爹鸡肉汉堡) is not the tall handsome burger projected in the advertisement, more on the flat side. And the grilled chicken is skinny and overcooked on one side so that it is tough for my burger but I will give it the benefit of doubt since today is their first launch day. There are also slices of crisp cucumber and onions with satay sauce between the two toasted sesame seeds buns. The peanut sauce is mildly spicy with a sweet and nutty flavour. I do wish the peanut profile is stronger, however.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The very next day, I bought the S$8.90 Satay Beef Burger Meal (沙爹牛肉汉堡) with medium French Fries and topped up S$0.75 to change my gassy drink to a small Ice Green Tea. I also ordered an ala carte Satay Chicken Burger (S$7.95) for mum which she enjoyed. After having eaten both, my preference goes to the grilled chicken version as it is more succulent and juicier. The beef burger is a tad dry due to the thinner patty, maybe more of the peanut sauce would do the trick.

Hey, do you want to learn how to play VHS tapes in the year 202X?
Tumblr media
I know this is my art blog, but it has come to my attention that some of you are too young to have experienced the joys of the Video Home System in its prime. Come hither so I can teach you and we can embrace the beauty of physical media together. If you have a thrift store and a TV, this process should work for you.
Step 1: Get a VCR ($4-$15)
DO NOT BUY EXPENSIVE VCR/COMBO SETS FROM THE INTERNET!
The ones you find on sites like eBay and Etsy are insanely overpriced and might not even work. Instead, find a Goodwill, Savers, or independent thrift store near you and go to the electronics section. There’s a good chance they’ll have at least one VCR. If they don’t, try a different shop. You can also check local online marketplaces, yard sales, etc.
Good things to look for:
4 (or more) Heads — Heads are the things that actually read the tape. The more heads you have, the better your picture is going to be.
Auto Tracking — Poor tracking can create a rolling picture, which is a pain to fix. An auto tracking VCR does that work for you.
Pre-2000 — After 2000, electronics started being mass produced with plastic casings and cheap parts. VCRs made after this time are a whole lot easier to break. Ideally, you want something from the late 80s to mid 90s.
Well-known brands — Sony, Toshiba, etc. Japanese manufacturers tend to have the best quality. Early Emersons are nice too.
Generally good condition — If there’s a bullet hole in the case, it’s probably best to pass on. A bit of dust isn’t an issue, but major damage isn’t a good sign. If you can, plug the machine into a power outlet in the store and see if it even turns on.
Head cleaning indicator — Not something you *need*, but I find it nice to have. You’ll want to use a head cleaning tape when the indicator starts flashing.
Tumblr media
This is the one I’ll be using for the sake of this guide. This is an old Emerson that I picked up from Goodwill for $7.95. (Notice the five price tags they slapped on top.)
Step 2: Get Some Tapes (¢10-$1)
This is the fun part. Almost every thrift store will have some VHS tapes, usually near the books/DVDs/records. I’ve seen them as expensive as a dollar, but some stores will just give them away for free. I suggest buying a few movies you like, plus one or two shitty tapes to test out your VCR with.
Tumblr media
You may also find 20 different copies of Titanic in every store. This is a normal occurance.
Tumblr media
Remember to check the condition of any tape you plan on putting in your machine. If the spool looks moldy, you *can* try to clean it, but you’ll need another VCR to do so. If the tape looks wrinkled or otherwise damaged, you can still probably play it, but it will look and sound a lot rougher than you should expect. If the casing is damaged, I wouldn’t risk trying to put it in your VCR at all.
Remember: VHS tapes stopped being produced commercially in 2006. Most tapes you find aren’t going to be in the best shape, because they’re all a few decades old. (Sometimes, though, you will come across a tape with an excellent picture, good sound quality, and subtitles! The Mummy tape that I own is near perfect.)
Step 3: Connecting the VCR to Your TV
For this step, you’re going to want a coaxial cable and a set of RCA cables (the red, yellow, and white ones). If your TV doesn’t have an RCA input, you’ll also need an RCA-to-HDMI converter. If your TV also doesn’t have an HDMI input for whatever reason, you’re shit out of luck.
Tumblr media
You’ll plug these cables into the “out” or “out to tv” connection on your VCR, then plug the other end into the back of your TV.
Note: Not all VCRs have right audio (the red one)! That’s fine. Just leave it hanging free. The left audio (white) is your mono audio, so you’ll just have that instead.
Lastly, put the channel switch on the back of your VCR on 3 or 4. I keep mine on 3. This is the number for the channel you’ll go to on your TV to actually see what the VCR is playing.
Step 4: Setting up the TV
I use a little Roku TV, which is surprisingly steady to set up for VCR input:
Settings ➡️ TV Inputs ➡️ Live TV
From here, you’ll either be prompted to scan for channels OR you’ll have to select “scan for antenna channels”. It will ask you if you want to have channels 3 and 4, to which you’ll say “yeah, I do want channels 3 and 4” and click the button that lets you have channels 3 and 4. If you don’t have an antenna, you can skip the other prompts.
I haven’t done this on any other type of TV, but the process should be pretty similar: get yourself to channels 3 and 4 through whatever means necessary.
Once you’re there, it should look like this. Sad, blank, and lonely. But not for long.
Tumblr media
Step 5: Playing Your Tapes
This is where things can go really really well or really really wrong. If everything is hooked up, you can grab your shitty tape and insert it into the VCR.
(Make sure there isn’t anything else in there first, though. Some people don’t remove their precious Titanic copies before donating these things.)
Tumblr media
You’ll want a tape that’s fairly clean, with no casing damage, and already rewound (black tape in the left window). To insert the tape into a front-loading VCR, slowly and firmly slide it into the slot. Once it’s most of the way in, the machine should “grab” it and pull it all the way inside. You’ll hear the machine make some noises.
(If those noises are really crunchy, that’s probably not a good thing. Troubleshoot with your favorite search engine or head over to r/VHS to see if anyone can help you.)
Once your machine is only making some clunky whirring sounds, it should be safe to press the play button. Enjoy watching your favorite films in the least pleasant format possible. Don’t forget to rewind em when you’re done.
Tumblr media
If you have issues, the freaks over at r/VHS tend to be really helpful, but you can also find decade-old YouTube videos that might answer your questions too.

As of March 2023, The X-Files is the 110th Most Popular TV show on IMDB.
Unlike the Nielsen Ratings, these scores aren’t set in stone. Anyone can make an IMDB account and contribute their ratings, so if there’s anything you disagree with on the list, go represent your opinion!
Tumblr media
All statistics from IMDB, all graphs created by me ✨
The data was obtained in March 2023, since IMDB ratings are subject to change, these findings may not be accurate in the future
However, with each episode currently having around 5k ratings, it’s likely not to vary too much.
Trends and Points of Interest✨
Season Three had both the highest rated episode (Clyde Bruckman at 9.2, tied with Bad Blood) and the lowest rated episode (Teso Dos Bichos at 5.9)
Despite being very high on the Nielsen charts, El Mundo Gira is one of the least popular episodes.
Season Three was the most featured on the “Most Popular” list (731, War of the Coprophages, Jose Chung, Paper Clip, Clyde Bruckman)
Despite being a beloved season, Season Four appeared the most on the “Least Popular” list (Teliko, The Field Where I Died, El Mundo Gira, Kaddish)
Here’s the full breakdown for anyone who’s curious to see where their favorite episode lands!
I hate math, but as far as my calculations go-
Mean: 7.81 Median: 7.8 Mode: 7.3 Range: 3.3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anything that shocked you?
1) I can’t believe Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man is so high
2) People are sleeping on Nothing Lasts Forever (it has one of the best MSR scenes!)
3) I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I don’t hate Fight Club. I’ve always liked Kathy Griffin

Hinwick House, also known as Little Buckingham Palace, was built in 1710, inspired by Buckingham Palace itself. This historic house is at the top of the market with a whopping 7.95 million dollars. What makes Hinwick House special? Aside from being a vintage house that has been preserved as years passed by, the house itself is magnificent inside and outside. Located in the east of Bedfordshire, England. It was originally built in the 18th century, and this historical state has been standing for over three centuries. It was kept magnificently but renovated and restored by Sam Singh.

The Death of a Keyword, and the Re-Shuffling of $500B in US eCommerce Sales
Tumblr media
By Justin Leigh | CEO, Workflow Labs | Article Link
Search is really important.  It’s so much faster than browsing.  In fact, it’s so much better that over 80% of Amazon’s sales are driven by customers going to the search bar, entering some keywords and buying one of the top five products of the thousands that the search query returns.
Keyword Search Sucks
As great as it is, keyword search sucks.  We just don’t know it yet.  We don’t know it yet in the same way we didn’t realize that stopping at a gas station to buy a paper map sucked compared to using GPS navigation.  Or having to wait in the rain at a designated meeting spot after a concert sucked compared to just texting your friends to ask where they are.
Objectively, it’s an odd process.  Customers must first think of words they believe a computer will understand.  The customer is then rewarded with an overwhelming amount of somewhat relevant products.  When the customer searches again, the search engine forgets they’ve ever talked with this customer before and returns a pile of new, unrelated products.  It’s like walking into a grocery store and yelling, “Peanut Butter,” and an army of clerks bring you all the cereal, dog treats and sandwich spread that contain the words “Peanut” and/or “Butter.”  You then yell, “Organic,” and get a bunch of bananas, flour, and healthy snacks.
This is not how we’ve evolved to think or communicate, but we accept it because the alternative - browsing through thousands of products - is much worse.
Then the World Changed
Search is about to get a lot better.  Generative search, natural language processing and AI will replace keyword matching and the results are incredible.  Unfortunately, that’s terrible news for everyone who has built a successful business based on keyword search.
To understand the difference, consider the following product search in this new world:
Me:
“please recommend a peanut butter that is healthy and comes in a large container because I make a lot of sandwiches”
ChatGPT:
“When choosing a peanut butter, look for one that is made with only a few ingredients, such as peanuts and salt, and avoid those with added sugars or oils. Here are some recommendations for healthy peanut butter options that come in large containers:
Crazy Richard's 100% Peanuts All-Natural Peanut Butter: This peanut butter is made with only one ingredient: roasted peanuts. It's also gluten-free, vegan, and non-GMO, and comes in a 48-ounce jar.
Kirkland Signature Organic Creamy Peanut Butter: This peanut butter is made with only organic roasted peanuts and salt. It comes in a 28-ounce jar and is certified USDA organic.
Smucker's Natural Peanut Butter: This peanut butter is made with only two ingredients: peanuts and salt. It's also non-GMO and gluten-free and comes in a 26.5-ounce jar.
Remember that peanut butter is high in calories and fat, so be mindful of your portion sizes to maintain a healthy diet.”
Great, now I’d like to know what I should spend on these:
“How much do those items cost on Amazon?”
ChatGPT:
“The prices of these items on Amazon may vary depending on the time of purchase and location, but here are the current prices (as of my knowledge cutoff date of September 2021) for each peanut butter option:
Crazy Richard's 100% Peanuts All-Natural Peanut Butter (48 oz): $13.97
Kirkland Signature Organic Creamy Peanut Butter (28 oz): $9.86
Smucker's Natural Peanut Butter (26.5 oz): $5.64
Jif Natural Creamy Peanut Butter (40 oz): $9.99
Skippy Natural Creamy Peanut Butter (40 oz): $7.67
Trader Joe's Creamy Salted Peanut Butter (16 oz): $7.95
Keep in mind that prices may vary, and there may be other retailers that offer these products at different prices.”
I’m easily influenced by famous people, so naturally:
“Are there any endorsed by celebrities?”
ChatGPT:
“There may be peanut butter brands that are endorsed by celebrities, but it's important to remember that celebrity endorsements do not necessarily mean that a product is healthier or of better quality. It's always a good idea to focus on the ingredients and nutritional value of a product rather than relying solely on celebrity endorsements.
That being said, here are a few peanut butter brands that have been endorsed by celebrities:
Justin's Nut Butter: Justin's is a natural nut butter company that has been endorsed by several celebrities, including Jennifer Aniston and Oprah Winfrey. Their products are made with high-quality ingredients and come in a variety of flavors.
PBfit: PBfit is a brand of powdered peanut butter that has been endorsed by actress and singer Vanessa Hudgens. Their powdered peanut butter is made with only roasted peanuts, salt, and sugar, and has 87% less fat than traditional peanut butter.
NuttZo: NuttZo is a nut butter brand that has been endorsed by Olympic athlete Lindsey Vonn. Their products are made with a blend of organic nuts and seeds and come in several different varieties.
Again, it's important to do your own research and read ingredient labels to make an informed decision about the peanut butter you choose to purchase.”
So, there you have it.  In addition to being endorsed by Vanessa Hudgens, PBFit was an early client at my last company so it’s the obvious winner.  If you conduct the same search, you will get different results.  The system is constantly learning and improving in ways no human can truly understand.
It makes the old keyword way seem so…old.
Who Will Mourn the Keyword?
There is no world in which keyword search wins.  It’s like bringing keywords to a natural language processing fight.  AI wins, Customers win, big time.  Shoppers will not mourn keywords.
Those who will mourn keywords are the owners of the products that have spent millions or billions of dollars on advertising, content, strategy, and execution to have the coveted top placement on the keywords that drive their business.  The ad platforms that generate billions of dollars selling keyword targeted ads will also mourn.  How will advertisers target consumers?  Other than just trusting AI, how do advertisers make decisions about how and where to invest?  How will brands know what content to develop? Companies that built entire businesses on keyword matching processes will mourn them.
AI in the Driver's Seat Means Different Products Win
As generative search based on natural language processing rolls out $500B+ of US retail sales will be completely reshuffled.  Ad tools and tactics will shift seemingly overnight.
Some products will just accidentally win.  They were always more relevant, but no one knew.  With AI in the driver seat, these products will steal share from others that had carefully, and expensively, mastered the now useless keywords.  Brands will be forced to learn to understand how the retailers’ different flavors of generative search work.  They will need to know a lot more about their customers.  Keyword stuffing into titles or bullets will not work anymore.  Brands will have to be strategic and highly engaged in actively managing the data that trains the AI models.
Saying Goodbye is Hard
Having been there for the birth of the keyword and now standing here so close to the end, I’d like to say a few words:
Keyword, you were a good friend.  You led us out of the darkness of browse.  You exposed all the knowledge of the world so I could settle minor disputes with my friends in real time.  You changed our lives in unimaginable ways.  Born just thirty years ago in 1993 on Aliweb, you were so young.  But change is life’s only constant, and I need more, better ways to find the right peanut butter for me.  So, it’s time to say goodbye.
But you never know!  Just like the acid-washed jeans I wore to your birthday party, maybe, one day, you’ll come back into style.

Santa’s Train Stocking stitched by cggat. Pattern ($7.95) designed by Stoney Creek Collection.
“I thought this group might appreciate the stocking my son’s Great Grandmother made him. She gifted him this a month or so after he was born. It’s one of the gifts I’ve most appreciated, because I am in awe of how much work went into it. I covered the top for privacy, but it has his name. She’s a talented knitter as well and has made him multiple sweaters.”

Network encryption is the process of encrypting or encoding data and messages transmitted or communicated over a computer network.
It is a broad process that includes various tools, techniques and standards to ensure that the messages are unreadable when in transit between two or more network nodes.
Network encryption is primarily implemented on the network layer of the OSI model. Network encryption implements one or more encryption algorithms, processes and standards to encrypt the data/message/packet sent over the network. The encryption services are generally provided by encryption software or through an integrated encryption algorithm on network devices and/or in software.
On an IP-based network, network encryption is implemented through Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) -based encryption techniques and standards. Each message sent is in an encrypted form and is decrypted and converted back into plain text/original form at the recipient's end using encryption/decryption keys.
According to the new market research report “Global Network Encryption Market Report 2023-2029”, published by QYResearch, the global Network Encryption market size is projected to reach USD 7.95 billion by 2029, at a CAGR of 11.1% during the forecast period.

Polkadot's Future: A Close Look at Market Signals and the Possibility of a Rebound
Polkadot (DOT) finds itself in the spotlight as it grapples with a rejection at a significant resistance level of $7.95, signaling a complex interplay of market forces influencing its value proposition. The rejection at this level triggers speculation, particularly among analysts such as Morecryptoonline, who point to the failure of wave (3) to achieve minimum targets as a precursor to a potential b-wave top formation. The confirmation of this trend looms with a decisive drop below $6.99.
Delving into the live market data, Polkadot's current price sits at $7.42, reflecting a notable 5.41% decrease over the last 24 hours. The trading volume, standing at $366.8 million, underscores the recent downturn that has placed the DOT token on the precipice of oversold territory, as indicated by its 4-hour Relative Strength Index (RSI) at 37.71. Despite the apparent selling pressure, there is a silver lining hinted at by the RSI's trajectory towards oversold conditions, suggesting the potential for a looming reversal.
Further analysis of the 4-hour Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) reveals the continued influence of selling pressure on Polkadot. However, the 4-hour Know Sure Thing (KST) oscillator signals an underlying strength within the DOT token, acting as a potential catalyst for a price reversal and countering the bearish signals from the MACD.
The DOT/USD 4-hour price chart, sourced from TradingView, adds another layer to the narrative, emphasizing the critical juncture where investors and market watchers find themselves. The confluence of RSI, MACD, and KST indicators may hold the key to dictating the short-term trajectory of DOT’s market value.
As Polkadot grapples with challenges at key resistance levels and hovers on the edge of oversold territory, investors are urged to closely monitor these developments. The volatile and unpredictable nature of cryptocurrency markets makes Polkadot's journey a captivating one, with potential interesting movements awaiting on the horizon.
