MARRAKSHI LIFE wants shoppers to take a risk . . . to focus on the craft and quality of items, and support brands that are changing the fashion industry and borders of gender.

Having connected with the brand over instagram during lockdown, last fall, at the invitation of the owners of MARRAKSHI LIFE, I travelled to Morocco to visit their atelier. There I made a selection of fabrics and styles for the collection now presented at EWANIKA. It was a privilege to visit behind the scenes where local artisans work, drawing on centuries of local sartorial know how.

Randall Bachner, a successful New York based fashion photographer, had a 10 day holiday in Marrakech in 2011 that recast his career path. With an eye for capturing beauty, he was captivated by the North African city’s color and energy and stylish yet relaxed way of life. As a result, Bachner relocated and founded the fashion company MARRAKSHI LIFE in 2013 with the intention of translating key style elements from traditional Moroccan dressing into contemporary wear for discerning men and women. He also envisioned a progressive path by honouring the local heritage, aesthetic, and culture by sustaining and championing its traditional weaving practices.

Bachner established his atelier in Marrakech, situated amongst other craft shops and part of the community, employing local artisans and craftsmen. The vertically integrated company allows all aspects of production to be overseen in house. In 2019 he was joined by partner in life and business, now Head of Brand, Nicholas Minucciani. Nicholas points to the importance of long-term relationships with models, weavers, tailors and customers, and how diversity and inclusivity are at the heart of the brand message. 

‘Making clothes that every human can feel inspired in, dress as they wish and as they identify. We design with the simple concept of making clothes for all types of humans, without categorization.’

Creating the garments begins with the raw cotton fibers, which are dyed locally in the signature MARRAKSHI LIFE color palette. The fibers are then spun in the atelier before being woven on wooden flatbed looms, many of which have been passed down for generations. The weaving process is complex and physical. It can take up to five artisans to load the warp onto the loom as it must maintain a high tension throughout the process. Through this process, the colors and architectural patterns of MARRAKSHI LIFE fabrics are realized. The atelier now has 70 plus weavers and tailors, who produce up to 10 meters of fabric daily on human-powered looms. The patterns are individually cut and sewn, which helps to reduce waste. 

The androgynous silhouettes are often beautifully simple yet expertly executed through skillful tailoring. This restrained approach is in keeping with the look of MARRAKSHI LIFE, allowing the exquisite craftsmanship of the handwoven fabrics to speak for itself. Each collection features a range of garments including caftans, tunics, dresses, tops, trousers and shorts. A key component of their style is to prioritize functionality, comfort and inclusivity in their garments where the shapes and colors of the designs are practical, gender-neutral and sit outside current fashion trends.

The utilitarian garments of MARRAKSHI LIFE, created from brightly colored and creatively patterned fabrics, have an original and contemporary look. This is borne out of the desire to bring together two cultures and aesthetics that, at first glance, seem at odds with one another. Yet Bachner has created a new definition of contemporary Moroccan fashion that incorporates the country’s rich cultural diversity and celebrates the skill and craftsmanship of some of Morocco’s most talented weavers.

Perfumes

Mom found back in her pocket one of those little papers to test the perfumes that she had made me smell last week. The perfume in question already smelled amazing last week and it still smells amazing now and holy shit I have a physical need to own this perfume. I'm normally quite loyal to a "small" French brand that makes fairly simple perfumes (things that are too complex or too strong tend to give me migraines + they make small bottles for 10 euros, which allows me to change fragrances regularly without breaking the bank) but there. THERE.

"Un bois vanille" by Serge Lutens. Mexican black vanilla, sandalwood and licorice. The fucking best thing I ever smelled.

This perfume just ticks all the boxes in terms of satisfying smell in my brain and I have never wanted to smell a perfume on myself so badly. Cause, like, I like perfumes. I LOVE perfumes. I have a sensitive nose so smelling good/having things that smell good easily accessible helps a lot in everyday life. I usually wear perfume more for my own comfort than for that of the people around but damn this smell is just right.

Just. It smells fucking sexy, okay ? My ace ass doesn't even have the need to feel sexy, but this smell is just. Ugh. This is the kind of scent I would want to have to make people around swoon if the world was a fucking Omegaverse. We've reached that point of toddler-brain screaming "WANT WANT WANT".

But fuck it, next sales or if I see it in a second-hand resell, I'll buy it. It's very, very far out of my usual price range but for now, when it comes to expensive perfumes, I'm like my mother: if we find one that we like and we stick, stick, stick to it. Mom wore the same perfume for 20 years until production was discontinued.

Fortunately, I was able to secure two full replacement days in the coming weeks and with my birthday and Christmas coming up, I should be able to put a nice nest egg aside to pay for at least 50 ml.

Anyways, if you have time to loose, I had fun listing all my perfumes under the cut with what they smell / what I think of it.

Montblanc Legend : My very first perfume after starting my transition, it's what helped me the most to feel good about myself when I had really bad dysphoria. It's a very, very rich fragrance, with a fougere/lavender/citrus top note, a floral rose/jasmine heart and an end note of oakmoss. Now that my nose has become even more sensitive, I have difficulty wearing it, but I still like it.

After that, all hail Adopt Perfumes lmao

At The End Of The World : Lavender, tonka bean, coconut wood and incense. Very "warm" and a little sweet, it is quite heady and a more “autumn” scent.

Blue Suit : Grapefruit, Apple, Violet Leaf, Vetiver. Very sharp and fresh, my mother hates it (she can't stand violet leaf) so I tend to avoid it around her. More of a spring scent.

I bought these two at the same time, for my first birthday after starting testosterone if I remember correctly. The first was my daily perfume for a very long time while I rather used the second, more lively and fresh, for more specific moments, like job interviews.

Hypnotique Incense : Pepper, Frankincense, Cistus Labdanum. Worn quite rarely, mostly when I'm in a witchy mood. Best smell to have around when I do my oracle readings. Very, very heady unfortunately, tends to cause me headaches and even a nosebleed once.

Vanilla Bourbon : Vanilla, Almond and Iris. One of my favorites from last year and what I wore almost all summer. Very very sweet, I smell like candy. Got a lot of compliments on that one.

Ravaging Vanilla : Amber vanilla, cognac and oak wood. I smell like a prohibition style bar with this one lmao. Much more intense and marked than my other vanilla perfume, I wear it on my most "masc" days. Smelling kinda like alcohol draws funky looks though.

Marrakech Royal : Cinnamon, orange blossom, tobacco and amber. My most recent purchase, because I wanted to smell spices because 🍁fall🍂. Very soft and sweet, I smell exactly like the gazelle ankles my roommate baked which is hilarious.

Since my birthday is coming up and I have a 1 bought, 1 offered, I'll probably end up with those two in addition.

Dubaï Palace : Saffron, black cherry, oud wood, vanilla. The one I was hesitant with when I bought Marrakech Royal. Also spicy, but more pronounced and I liked the saffron/oud wood combination.

Eternal Osmanthus : .... ZHONGLI HERE I COME LMAO. Osmanthus and cedar wood ? Empty brain no thoughts, sign me in babe.

La veille du départ de Marrakech, JM a fait l’excursion d’Essaouira, une ville qu’il connaît bien pour y être allé à plusieurs reprises. Mais se souvenant du séjour que sa nièce Maïlys y avait fait au printemps, avec son mari Jérôme et leurs deux enfants, il a voulu se rafraîchir la mémoire. Marina, rebutée par les 6 heures de bus, n’a pas voulu le suivre.

Le « fils du pays » : c’est ainsi que les habitants ont ironiquement surnommé le vent qui, toute l’année, s’engouffre dans les ruelles de la ville. Cet alizée vaut à Essaouira la douceur de son climat : ici, le mercure atteint à peine les 25°.

Depuis sa fondation au XVIIIe siècle, la ville s’est voulue un carrefour d’influences : arabes et berbère, juives, mais aussi africaines avec les descendants des esclaves d’Afrique noire. S’y côtoient aussi religieux et artistes, marocains et occidentaux, venus confronter leurs talents dans les nombreuses galeries de la ville.

Essaouira, c’est aussi le charme de ses ruelles et de son port, ses maisons blanches, la beauté de ses remparts, une plage de sable fin longue de plusieurs kilomètres et la gentillesse spontanée des habitants. Bref, la ville la plus séduisante du littoral marocain

Cette ville historique a une riche histoire qui remonte à l'Antiquité. Elle a été fondée par les Phéniciens, puis a été occupée par les Romains, les Carthaginois. Les Portugais y érigèrent une forteresse au XVIe siècle (Mogadouro), mais la ville telle qu’on la connaît aujourd’hui doit sa création au sultan alaouite Mohammed ben Abdallah qui, en 1764, fait appel à un architecte français, Théodore Cornut. Il dessine une cité fortifiée dans la plus pure tradition de l’architecture militaire de Vauban qui rappelle beaucoup celle de Saint Malo. Dans la médina, les rues rectilignes se coupant à angle droit sont un exemple unique d’architecture planifiée au Maroc. Elles valurent à la cité, son nouveau nom : Essaouira, la « bien dessinée ».

Dans les souks on trouve de nombreux produits artisanaux tels que des tapis, des bijoux en argent et des articles en bois de thuya.

Une grande partie de la ville est classée au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO.

Nous avons déjeuné sur le toit terrasse de l’Hôtel « L'Heure Bleue » (« Relais & Châteaux), aménagé dans un ancien Riad, situé au cœur de la médina. Il possède une piscine sur le toit offrant une vue panoramique sur la médina et l'océan.

JM garde un souvenir très mitigé de cet Hôtel. A part le rez-de-chaussée (et encore…), le roof top est très quelconque, ce qu’il a mangé aussi. Si « L’Heure Bleue » fait partie de la chaîne très haut de gamme des « Relais & Châteaux », il connaît à Marrakech au moins 3 Riads qui mériteraient l’appellation « Relais & 5 Châteaux », quant au Riad du Club Med, ce serait « Relais & 10 Châteaux » !!! (voir le Billet suivant).

The Confédération Africaine de Football (“CAF”) has unveiled the list of nominees for the men’s categories for the #CAFAwards24, as anticipation builds for the Awards evening scheduled on 16 December 2024 in Marrakech, Morocco. The CAF Awards 2024 cover the period between January 2024 and October 2024. Ten (10) players have been shortlisted for the coveted CAF African Player of the Year just as 10 players feature on the list for the CAF Interclub Player of the Year.
