toonheads UK promos are actually a bit of a white whale for me. the original US show has turned up online in the last few years, which is Very cool !! there's a lot of facts and footage there that wasn't readily available for a long time
but that one got a more smooth-talking air pilot or radio host-kinda guy voice for the host puppet during the, eyecatches? I guess. I don't think he was ever used in the show itself iirc. ours was dubbed with a hoarse glaswegian accent, and probably had a different script, too. as of now there's only a couple uploads of CN continuity breaks with brief promos showcasing that voice so I Knoww it existed and wasn't a weird memory.

your blog reminds me of that old toonheads show
THANK YOUUUUU AHHHHHHH WHAT A KIND THING TO SAY!! you're actually not the first to make this comparison, which i LOVE!! i hesitate to confess that i've never yet seen an episode of Toonheads myself... key word YET!! if i'd have seen it when it was airing at a more cognizant age i know kid me would have eaten it up
but seriously! i'm so happy to hear this :') i love shows like Toonheads because it's proof that The People Love To Learn!! and that's what i aim for! it just feels gratifying to learn something new. and even moreso to share it with others!! i definitely see myself as a bit of an archive account myself--whether you have all the interest in the world in golden age cartoons (welcome to the club!) or absolute squat, i at least hope that at least one person comes out learning something new and is maybe even able to foster that knowledge further! it's so rewarding. like an eternal scavenger hunt for knowledge!! so it makes me quite happy to get comparisons like these. thank you thank you!!

Happy 80th Birthday to Private Snafu!
Tumblr media
Snafu.......Situation Normal All........All Fouled Up!
youtube
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A series of World War 2-themed animated short films screened for young military men. They were mainly instructional, educational films, but still contained that same irreverent, slapstick comedy style of humor of the Looney Tunes & Merrie Melodies, thanks to the contributions of the boys of Termite Terrace: Chuck Jones, Bob Clampett, Friz Freleng and Frank Tashlin, and voice legend Mel Blanc.
The intention these cartoons had on the military audiences was that, the titular character, Private Snafu was an incompetent soldier that was meant to illustrate, in more straightforward way, what NOT to do (true to his name that is), with practically each short ending with Snafu getting blown.
Imagine how different it could've been if Disney had done these instead of Warner Bros., as that was the United States Army’s first choice. But that didn't happen as Leon Schlesinger would bid lower than Disney.
These shorts, of course, generally remained obscure in the minds of the mainstream audiences (until recently that is) as they never were intended to be shown in public theaters. As Martha Sigall, a staff of the ink-and-paint department at Leon Schlesinger Studios, stated these Private Snafu cartoons were top secret. They wore ID badges, did fingerprints, got FBI approval and were given ten cels rather than the usual thirty cels, to prevent them from knowing about the stories.
youtube
Therefore, it was never made for a general audiences of kids and adults as the publicly released Looney Tunes shorts were, especially considering it’s content; mild swearing (i.e., damn, hell) and fanservice displayed all over these cartoons that couldn't have been possible in the days of the Hays Code (it's especially surprising to note that Ted Geisel, AKA Dr. Seuss, of all people, was the main writer for THESE!!! Wowie!!!!).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fun fact: (one of the shorts titled “Censored” was shown on Cartoon Network’s trivia show Toonheads late at night with half of the scene featuring a topless Sally Lou cut out!)
And, naturally, because this was a WWII-themed series, featured a good deal of derogatory depictions/imagery of Japanese/Germans and Nazis (which will not be shown here).
It's interesting to see not only how strongly connected Private Snafu is to the Looney Tunes, considering, not only the same style of humor, but the two cameo appearances of Bugs Bunny (Gas and Three Brothers), which could make Snafu himself a Looney Tune.
Tumblr media
This is especially considering his early bird cameo in Chuck Jones’s The Draft Horse.
Tumblr media
Later on, Private Snafu would not only be done by Warner Bros., but also by it’s competitors, like MGM, UPA, Harman-Ising and Disney.

Two shorts were left unproduced. One of them was originally going to be directed by none other Tex Avery at MGM. Too bad that didn’t happen!!
Though the Private Snafu series maybe a time capsule of World War 2, as oppose to being as timeless as the classic Looney Tunes cartoons are, they still serve as a fascinating historical art, a look at what our world was going through, and still included a lot of the trademark style of humor seen in the Warner Bros. cartoons that still kept it entertaining enough.

In the spirit of classic Cartoon Network shows, such as ToonHeads, I've decided to curate a collection of Christmas-themed shorts from Warner Bros, MGM, and Paramount for everyone to enjoy. Every short included is of the best quality possible. Link will be in the comments. Made by @MesaVerde1987

😊 The only thing that would make it better would be 1) a movie night - remember the old Cartoon Network Saturday Night movie before Toonami? 2) they dragged ToonHeads out of mothballs
I agree, but they might have limited access to films due to copy write.
I guess the two Fleischer movies could be used?

The Best of the Worst Cartoons Ever ToonHeads: The Best of the Worst Cartoons Ever was an unaired 2003 Cartoon Network Special [via Metafilter, where you should read John Harris's notes]. Hanna-Barbera, Ruby Spears and Filmation have much to answer for! For all the Scooby-Doo knockoffs and corporate zaniness, though, there's an experimental quality to much of it (at least within the bounds of what was possible on network television) and some surprisingly weird moments. — Read the rest https://boingboing.net/2023/03/07/the-best-of-the-worst-cartoons-ever.html

Sealab 2021 #51: “No Waterworld” | April 18, 2005 – 12:15AM | S05E07
Another “not one of their worst!” kinda episodes. Hell, there’s not even a disgusting crew photo at the end. But in true Sealab fashion nothing really lands. Cohesive enough story, jokes that aren’t 100% dogshit, things are set up in the episode that sorta pay off, etc.
In this one, the water around Sealab mysteriously disappears. There’s no apparent reason for it at first. There are two inevitabilities: either the water will come back or the water is never coming back. Most of the crew assumes the later and immediately start dismantling their escape vessel to build a monster truck and selling off all their scuba equipment. Debbie discovers that Abyss like creatures are behind it all, and have the water backed up with an invisible barrier or some kind and will be putting it back in mere minutes.
The only part of this that really landed for me was the ending, it it wasn’t even that unique of a joke; a cameo by actor Ed Harris is teased while the water starts rushing back towards Sealab. As we are about to see the carnage unfold, we hear the water rushing getting louder and louder. Sparks (I think) says of the upcoming cataclysmic event AND Ed Harris cameo: “this is going to be aweso-” abrupt cut to credits. They did a variation of this same joke in another episode (I forget which - Neptunati? I think.), but they actually tell it so much better this time. But this is still a mostly bad episode despite the nice change in scenery.

ToonHeads (April 21, 2005 – 5:30AM)
Man, I loved ToonHeads. It counts among my earliest memories of “I don’t just like cartoons, I like LEARNING ABOUT cartoons”. Some real Jerry Beck shit. (incidentally, one of the first books I ever owned on the subject was by Beck; The Fifty Greatest Cartoons, which made me realize that ADULTS actually take cartoons seriously and maybe that’s not so bad). Toonheads were half-hour long “themed” compilations of classic cartoons, featuring the Turner library at the time which consisted of Looney Tunes, MGM, and some Fleischer (maybe just Popeye?). The most memorable was a special about Wartime cartoons, which included some bumpers between the cartoons to explain the historical context, pointing out why they are rarely screened on television.
Is there a show like this anymore? I know there’s a new Saturday Morning cartoon thing with classic cartoons on Me-TV, I’m talking about a high-minded adult-aimed show that shows cartoons and discusses the history behind them. I just think it would be neat, is all. I guess I can just rewatch ToonHeads.

Cartoon Network Friday Spotlight- ToonHeads- “The Wartime Cartoons”
Tumblr media
Oh man, we do not give CN enough credit for showing ToonHeads back in the day. This was the best, a programming of some of the best classic cartoons from the Turner library, themed with historical context and trivia added. Animation historian Jerry Beck was behind most of these, and added a lot of his know-how into the show. This series was great for fans of animation who wanted to learn more about their favorite cartoons, back when it was slightly harder to find all of this information online. Not to mention that these were great for children who loved these classic characters, and now had the chance to learn more about them.
This is one of the show’s four hour-long specials, focusing on content from WWII. It featured Tex Avery’s first short for MGM, “Blitz Wolf”, and three Looney Tunes, “Scrap Happy Daffy”, “Herr Meets Hare”, and “Russian Rhapsody”, all of which were seldom seen over the years.
The cartoons speak for themselves, still being entertaining pieces of propaganda, but what really stands out are the supplemental features in between. These discuss and even show clips of different kinds of wartime cartoons, some of which were even rarer at the time. Warner’s Private Snafu, their short-lived series of shorts shown exclusively to soldiers, had a couple of clips shown, well before they’d be released on DVD, and they even show bits of some unfortunate examples of racist towards Japanese people during this time, featuring clips from regrettable shorts like “Tokio Jokyo” and “Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips”. The rarest thing for Cartoon Network, however, would be the couple of still photographs borrowed from the Walt Disney Studio, featuring Goofy’s original voice Pinto Colvig, and Walt himself, which were added for additional context and credited to the Studio at the end.
It’s all really cool to see, back when CN was really more of an all-ages channel. ToonHeads was a show for everyone, as its mixture of some of the greatest cartoons ever made and the history behind them could enlighten and entertain simultaneously. You can see many episodes on the Internet Archive, but the only legal release of any episodes that I know of comes from the first Looney Tunes Golden Collection DVD and the third Platinum Collection Blu-Ray, which feature another hour-long special, “The Lost Cartoons”. That’s also highly recommended, and could easily be another Spotlight.
