Tape 6, Side A
“Clay. Helmet. Your name does not belong on this list. But you need to be here if I’m going to tell my story. If I’m going to explain why I did what I did. Because you aren’t every other guy. You’re different. You’re good and kind and decent. And I didn’t deserve to be with someone like you. I never would. I would have ruined you. It wasn’t you. It was me.” -Hannah

I agree on doing all the assignments can get you the A you want. Also i like how you opened up to answer any question thats a pretty cool thing to do! I also agree on the getting familiar with Tumblr because I remember freaking out myself for not knowing how to use it. I hope you can put into use all the learning experiences that you had in this class in your future! Good Luck :)
Week 16
What?
Sitting here thinking what I learn, i notice that even though my research skills where vastly improved by getting knowledge on all the available databases and other resources. This course has thought me something else…. In the class we developed a sense for diversity and cultures. To research about something we cared about or that could potentially affect us. In this process we learn to communicate with one another and really see writing and research in a real world setting.
so What?
Learning to communicate effectibly is key part in everyones future careers. As an engineer i though this was just another basic class, something i was forced to take. However, I now find that this is very well an extremely effective class. Whether I actually learned a lot or just simply realized the importance of effective communication skills.
Now What?
I will continue to find ways on how to convey my ideas into projects. In my career it is essential to know how to speak to the public, to the contractor. Not everyone speaks “engineer” and learning to distinguish that is very important. Knowing the target audience and being able to attract their attention is life and death in my field. During one of the assignments I was able to meet a couple of people and some projects came from that experience. This has encourage me to go around campus and find others with similar interest and do something different. I encourage everyone to take the initiative and find others within your collages to start a project you might have in mind. There are others just like us waiting for a push.
Tips?
If you are new to this class… Just be open minded to everything, from tumblr, to the research. Even when some content is optional, do not skip or miss out on it. This class is about becoming effective communicators, learning to network. This is the single most important thing in collage and for any career. Don’t hide in a bubble, do not wait last minute to do the assignments (trust me on this one) DO ALL THE ASSIGNMENTS GET ALL THE A’s!!! ….. IF you happen to be a new student and reading this… reblog, ask me a question or two ill be happy to help!

Rhetoric and Writing Studies 1302 with Audrey!!!👏🏼
What
So in my second semester of my college career I had the privilege of taking RWS 1302 with Audrey. It was my fist semester working with her. I got the opportunity to learn new things regarding my writing that in the past I simply did not learn. Also this class introduced me with Tumblr which in the past i would think its crazy because no one would imagine a writing class using social media, but anyways thats not the point because actually with our post we got to learn things differently in amore interactive way which I fist i was having a hard time but with time learned how to love it. My classmates and I had the opportunity to help each others with this new tool, that for me was way cooler than your standard way.
So What
Now that I've taken both RWS classes I feel more prepared and confident about my professional writing skills. I strongly believe that all of the assignments that we did in class helped me some way or another. Like the Literature Review, helped conduct an interview, writing proper and strong research questions, and also exploring my career more! This class was definitely not just about writing the communicational skills and group work are a bonus. Creating a website, learning how to portray yourself to the world. This class was a life learning experience essentially! I really learned a lot.
Now What
This class has been a massive learning experience and now its time for me to make every lesson put into good use. I have better communicational skills which can definitely help me through my college career. I experienced working with others as a group. Conducting effective research and interviews. Using social media on a good way and creating my own website to share with other. But most importantly my writing skills and how to reach out to others with the power of words.
Future Students of RWS 1302
My advice to all of you is to definitely take Audrey. I personally was freaking out the first week but that was because i wasn't familiar with the hybrid class set up as well as using Tumblr. Make sure that you stay on top of your assignments and quizzes because its easy to forget them due to the crazy college life that your living. However, Audrey is aware of that and she tries to help you as much as possible. She allows students to text her if they have questions. YES! She gives out her phone number thats crazy !! But please don't be texting her all the time she also has a life. Im guilty of doing that. IM SORRY !!😅 But yeah just be comfortable with using Tumblr and get creative ! Other than that just keep track of deadlines and upcoming assignments and you'll do good. 😃
GOOD LUCK!!!

I agree Priscila, a great way to catch people’s attention is by telling them the facts that they are trying to avoid. Pathos is great tool to make them get attached to your cause through an emotional way. Logos, that an important one because here we are trying to provide people with facts regarding the argument. Good job with your post you really provided us with great examples and uses of the rhetorical devices, ethos, logos and pathos. :) I can't wait to present!
Ethos, Pathos, Logos
SECTION A: The attention grabber
I will grab my audiences attention by providing shocking death rates among Hispanics and non-Whites. This will show the audience how serious disparities in healthcare can be, thus it creates a form of logos and pathos.
Another way to grab my audience’s attention is by providing a powerful picture that they can relate to (PATHOS). For example, the following picture shows different ethnicity’s of many people at once, therefore members of my audience can relate to their ethnicity.

SECTION B: The policy change
The video below explains in a simple language of the policy ObamaCare! This is a great video that I might include in my Op-Ed on the side of my website. The video goes on to explain how ObamaCare works: who is eligible? How do you apply? Who is not eligible? i will provide statistical information to my audience on who and who does not have insurance. For instance, half of the U.S. population will get health insurance through their jobs, about a third will get health insurance through the government (Medicare and Medicaid), 1 in 10 will get health insurance by themselves, and under 1 in 10 (30 million people) do not have health insurance (LOGOS).
youtube
I will propose my policy change by providing facts of today’s policies, such as: The Supreme Court ruled that governors and legislators of each state should decide whether or not they want to be a part of expanding Medicaid. This policy should be changed to where all states need to be on board with expanding Medicaid. This will allow low-income families to get health insurance, thus reducing disparities in health care.
SECTION C: Call to action
In order to minimize ethnic disparities in health care we need to change the diversity among Hispanic, African-Americans, and Native Americans in the health and sciences filed. In order to achieve this goal, I will demonstrate my audience the different kind of scholarships and founds out there for minorities. The next step to minimize disparities in healthcare is to inform each an every minority the advantages they might be eligible for health insurance.

Ethos, Pathos, Logos FTW! WEEK15😎
Section A: The attention grabber!
As I mentioned before, the audience is the primary thing to worry about when trying to achieve advocacy. Some of the examples that I will be using to achieve getting the attention are:
-Visuals, these tend to increase both pathos and logos depending on what the image has to offer. If its a graph or a chart this can increase the Logos. However if I use emotional images, this will definitely hit the Pathos. Also images are the best tool to use when trying to explain thing to the audience.
-As for the Ethos, me presenting and sharing my knowledge of what i have learn both through the documentary and literature review will increase my credibility as a scholar.
Section B: The policy change
My topic is Hispanic Diversity in Nursing, so my goal is to increase the Hispanic representation in the nursing field. The more research I did, the more impressed I was considering that I am part of that ethnicity. The reality of this issue is that there are very few hopes for Hispanic students to pursue such career.
Let us be honest, people are constantly saying and talking about the opportunities there are for such students such as scholarships. However, what can these students do with all of this opportunities ? Do they have any idea where to go or what their next step is?
-My solution is to start a mentoring program in high schools and colleges where these students can get the support and guidance through this competitive career. I think that many students do not finish because of the lack of guidance and knowing what to do.
(If future generations see the positive change, then they will be encourage to do the same thing and educated themselves in this career in order to help their own people.)
*Ethos- By being part of such group I can increase the credibility of my argument because I am too living such conditions. In other words, I know hat it is like to be in such situation.
*Pathos- Our documentary provides a lot of the Pathos that we incorporated in our argument. The usage of a Latin song and the images of Hispanic graduates really encourage and motivate others to follow the same example.
*Logos- The usage of facts and graphs showing what the standards are can easily indicate the audience the the argument in fact is true.
Section C: Call to attention
In order to really see a change in the current standards we must educated our people on how such representation affects our growing community. Motivate and guide students to achieve graduation is healthcare fields such as nursing. Because at the end of the day, a more diverse workforce means better healthcare for all. 🙌🏽

Daniel, I like where you're going but I feel that you need to incorporate information from the research and the documentary in your post so that people can understand what you are talking about. I like that you shared a video regarding public speaking but whats your say about public speaking, how do you overcome those nerves?. I like that you want to build programs that can help Hispanic students that are not familiar with the English language. Maybe if you list a few ideas of such programs can make your advocacy more effective. We want to know the how rather than what. Also the last part about obesity confused me?
Week 14
SECTION 1:
2) Public speaking video
SECTION 2:
another video….
SECTION 3:
7) I think the state of obesity is a very good source of information to learn about obesity and the causes in the United States.

Public Speaking, Public Opinion, Public Outreach 📎
SECTION 1: Public Speaking
Public speak is not the easiest thing to do. As mentioned in the RWS eBook, if we want to do well on it we must practice. Joanna and Priscila are my partners and I feel confident about their public speaking. For our documentary we also did a little public section ourselves so I think that if we agree on who is saying what everything would go by smoothly. Just like on the Ted Talk we must convey the message we are trying to share with the audience.
Some tips that we can use is eye contact. When giving a presentation, the nerves always take over and eye contact can be hard to achieve because the individual is too busy thinking about not messing up. However if eye contact is achieve, the audience right away knows that the presenter knows what he or she is talking about. Also including some sort of emotional attachment to the topic makes the presentation easier because your heart speaks out easily.
SECTION 2: Public Opinion
I selected this Op-Ed mainly because it talked about my semester topic which was Hispanic Diversity in Nursing. Also it had similarities with the Ted Talk. I noticed that during Ted Talk, Hugh Evans gave multiple facts regarding the issue while having an emotional appeal all at the same time. I think that is what made his presentation more efficient and far reaching.
SECTION 3: Public Outreach
For my semester topic after doing my research and working with my peers on the documentary , we came into a conclusion that it is a reality that a low representation of Hispanics in nursing is found in our current society her in the United States. Also we found out that theres many opportunities out there for individuals to pursue such career. However the lack of guidance only makes the situation harder for this individuals because yes they have all these opportunities but really can they make something from them?
1st step: Educated the audience regarding the topic, in my case (Hispanic students pursuing the Nursing career.) No action is ever going to happens if nobody takes the time to explain to these individuals the importance of their representation in the nursing field. In other words make them realize a problem is present.
2nd step: Promote the “college/scholarship application” importance to such individuals. Make them know there are opportunities out there that can be useful for them. Not only by providing them with such information but to actually guide them through the process within the campus they are currently enrolled in. A mentoring program can be useful in this case as well because such individuals have a role model to follow (many of these individuals lack such role models due to the fact that they are primary higher education attendees, parents did not acquire higher education or only has minimal primary and secondary education.)
3rd step: Spreading success. If step 1 and 2 are efficient these will increase the graduation rate of such students in nursing therefore creating the idea that really “dreams” are possible. This will not only act as a motivation for upcoming generations but finally show representations of Hispanics in nursing at a much higher rate.
I, myself know what it is like to not having any guidance in my academic career because both of my parents did not acquire any kind of higher education. I was given many opportunities because of my academic performance, but I must admit, this process would have been much easier if I had someone that guided me along this intimidating road. 💪🏼

I agree with the days! Because Thursday its my busy day, so in that we are good. I think we should have our stuff ready like how we did it for the last Tumblr post we should focus on what we got and select our best information so that we can use it for the documentary. I think that is more easy to do and a time saver. I also don't know a lot about MACs but theres people that can help us and I do believe Joanna has used that program before so don't worry 😊. Lets do this!!!! We got this!!💯✓👯
one..two...three...ACTION!!!
a. I will commit the rest of this week for this project for at least an hour or two of gathering and organizing my information that I will present to my group for the days we meet.
b. Our group will commit on Wednesday and Friday after 11:20am to do our project at the UGLC in room 233 (correct me if I’m wrong if this is the lab room that the girl said in the workshop). I will be working alone on Thursday to upload my interview video so that I can select the appropriate times.

c. Specifically what we will be working on Wednesday is on trying to get all of our information together and organizing it with the videos and pictures we have selected. On Friday we will do some touch ups and add in the appropriate music, and finish our credits at the end of the video.
d. In order to complete these aspects of this project I will have to go over each video that I have selected from YouTube and make sure all parts are under 10 seconds for legal purposes, and which pictures to use. I also have to gather my sites for all the quotes that I have gathered.
e. Some specific aspects of this assignment that concerns me is working with the program iMovie on the Mac computers. I am concerned that our work won’t be saved properly and we won’t be able to be successful….but lucky us the UGLC has trained faculty that know how to use this program! Also, the girl who came to give us the workshop last Friday, I have for my History class and I can always ask her for further assistance.

f. The specific aspects that I am most comfortable with this assignment is with the information that our group has gather. I feel that our claims in this video are strong and have the evidence to back up each claim we make.
Ready to do this video you guys?? @mcastorena3 @jsgallegos

Close-Up, CUT!!! Its Documentary Time!!!
a. I will work on this project for the rest of this week. My group will meet to exchange the information that we each gather in order to start putting the video together.
b.My group will committed on this Wednesday and Friday to work on our documentary, we will meet at the UGLC in room 233. I will be working alone Thursday, so that I can't decide on the sections I want to use for our documentary.
c. On Wednesday we will be working on selecting the content we would like to put on our documentary, this day will primarily serve as a decision making day, and to decided who is going to do what. Friday is going to put everything together, polish the video, and add any finishing touches that may be necessary .
d. In order to achieve this project I will condense my data that I gather in order to use it for the video. Starting with the Youtube videos that I selected, i need to make sure specifically what parts I want to use because we are only allowed 10 seconds. Next, i will choose my best pictures and quotes. Lastly getting all the citations for my information.
e. The aspects that I am more concern about would be using the iMovie program even though we had a workshop its a lot of information to take in, however the ATALS lab at the UGLC has staff that can help my group. Also I'm concern to finding the right audio for our video because we have two different emotions that we are trying to evoke upon the audience, however I do think that its possible if my group works together.
f. The aspects that I am most comfortable with is our information that we gathered, I feel that my group has strong content we can use for our documentary. Its just the matte roof putting all together.
I’m ready @marinpriscila and @jsgallegos!!!!! Lets do this!!! 💯
