on some real shit one of the absolute saddest and most dystopian things i saw in the last 48 hours i was scrolling through tiktok was the (hundreds!!!) of posts from everyday people of all ages going online and crying about the fact that they were losing their only sense of outside connection. they spoke about how they were housebound, or disabled, or homeless, or just straight up didn’t have any friends and how tiktok was their sole window to any semblance of community and how much it hurt to lose that connection. it was utterly gut-wrenching to witness.

late stage capitalism has devastated the social fabric of our society to the point that the only “third space” we’re left with was an app that was arbitrarily banned by the state, thereby depriving hundreds of thousands of people from their one source of comfort. and we can sit here and argue about the merit of tiktok and its many flaws (i am well aware of the general tumblr opinion on this) but the facts remain true. tiktok very well may have been the last straw holding some people together.

and before you say i’m being dramatic, consider that in the last 12 hours of tiktok i scrolled through five!! separate posts telling people to please not kill themselves and the comment section… reader it would make you weep.

if your a tiktok refugee welcome, take care of yourselves babes. it wasn’t just an app it was a community and your feelings of grief and loss are valid. i hope tumblr can be that community for you.
