THIS PERFORMANCE OF THIS JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH CANTATA, my fellow Tumblrlionaires, is how I got further into early music.

I first watched this performance of BWV 106 in 5th grade, on Ovation TV. Many kids were into cable television for shows that they’d otherwise miss out on due to the limited options on local channels. (Massive respect to those who didn’t have that luxury.) I was lucky to be one of those kids since being born in New Jersey. The references from shows like Tiny Toon Adventures and All That would’ve been all but over my head if Nickelodeon wasn’t one of the offerings on the box.

Naturally, my elementary school music class’s recorder unit was learning “Hot Cross Buns.” I had played that folk song on the recorder several times even before settling in Tampa Bay. And I darn played that VERY WELL. At the same time, I watched Koopman’s performance of BWV 106 on Ovation TV. (Not to mention a snippet of Michala Petri playing Bach on Classic Arts Showcase on my public access channel.)

It was when I discovered not only what the recorder could play besides the songs (“Hot Cross Buns” included) that had evoked hilariously adverse memories of people who muddled through recorder units at their elementary schools and LOATHED THEM.

IT GOT ME MUCH DEEPER INTO THE EARLY MUSIC RABBIT HOLE.

A HECKUVA LOT DEEPER.

Who can beat contralto Elisabeth Von Magnus-Harnoncourt’s beautiful take on “In deine Hände befehl ich meinen Geist?” (It’s my favorite rendition, with Michael Chance’s rendition with the Purcell Quartet a VERY CLOSE second.) And Klaus Mertens’s “Heute wirst du mit mir im Paradies sein” was the most sublime thing I as an 11-year-old had ever heard.

Who would’ve known that I started loving early music when I was a TWEEN?
