Remember the mid-‘90s American infomercial of BBC’s language learning video series Muzzy? The female announcer said of the children watching one of the videos in the background, “That’s French they’re speaking, but those children aren’t French; they’re American.”

If I were to reword the announcer’s words regarding the kids from the Classical Christian school in Monroe, Louisiana - Geneva Academy - that’s German they are singing. But neither one of those upper middle and high schoolers are trained in the great British choirs (such as King’s College alumni Charles Daniels and Michael Chance) nor are aspiring to pursue early music degrees at Schola Cantorum Basilinesis when they grow up.

They are American kids who have varying aspirations, trained in the Kodály music education method.

Though this article is primarily geared towards classical Christian schools, you neither have to be a choral director of one nor be a student to learn something from Jarrod Richey’s article! It’s worth a read!

And I’m hoping that anyone of you classical music-loving Tumblrions in the Northeastern Louisiana area (or are moving there) would form a historically-informed practice (HIP) ensemble. Maybe those above kids could sing with it in the near future…

Speaking of Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott, BWV 80, here’s a professional performance of this Bach cantata. The now-passed concert featured modern instruments and a female mezzo-soprano in the alto-tenor duet. However, this below video features replicas of the 18th century predecessors of the modern instruments the Monroe Symphony Orchestra played upon. The alto in the duet is a male countertenor.

THIS PERFORMANCE OF THIS JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH CANTATA, my fellow Tumblrlionaires, is how I got further into early music.

I first watched this performance of BWV 106 in 5th grade, on Ovation TV. Many kids were into cable television for shows that they’d otherwise miss out on due to the limited options on local channels. (Massive respect to those who didn’t have that luxury.) I was lucky to be one of those kids since being born in New Jersey. The references from shows like Tiny Toon Adventures and All That would’ve been all but over my head if Nickelodeon wasn’t one of the offerings on the box.

Naturally, my elementary school music class’s recorder unit was learning “Hot Cross Buns.” I had played that folk song on the recorder several times even before settling in Tampa Bay. And I darn played that VERY WELL. At the same time, I watched Koopman’s performance of BWV 106 on Ovation TV. (Not to mention a snippet of Michala Petri playing Bach on Classic Arts Showcase on my public access channel.)

It was when I discovered not only what the recorder could play besides the songs (“Hot Cross Buns” included) that had evoked hilariously adverse memories of people who muddled through recorder units at their elementary schools and LOATHED THEM.

IT GOT ME MUCH DEEPER INTO THE EARLY MUSIC RABBIT HOLE.

A HECKUVA LOT DEEPER.

Who can beat contralto Elisabeth Von Magnus-Harnoncourt’s beautiful take on “In deine Hände befehl ich meinen Geist?” (It’s my favorite rendition, with Michael Chance’s rendition with the Purcell Quartet a VERY CLOSE second.) And Klaus Mertens’s “Heute wirst du mit mir im Paradies sein” was the most sublime thing I as an 11-year-old had ever heard.

Who would’ve known that I started loving early music when I was a TWEEN?

Michael Rother went to the same school as Florian. “He was a couple of years above me, but I had already noticed him, because he was somewhat grumpy and had a silly walk”

Rother also mentions how his dad died when he was 15 and that’s why he ended up in Düsseldorf.

Bodo mentions Sinus, but unfortunately doesnt go into too much detail.

Michael Rother actually did join KW before Ralf left for Aachen, and he talks about a jam session they had, and how Ralf and Michael’s ideas worked well together.

Wolfgang apparently was pissed, since when Michael left The Spirits of Sound to join Kraftwerk, he ended up seeing Michael on TV.

The Michael, Klaus Dinger, Florian line up played a gig with Cluster, and the audience was so mad that Cluster was about to go on.

The album recording with the same line up was apparently cancelled after 20 minutes

Florian was hugely inspired by Oskar Sala, and even set up a time where he lectured in Karlsruhe.

Autobahn is actually the route from Düsseldorf to Hamburg, I hadn’t realized that before!

Ira Blacker, according to Eberhard Kranemann, pulled a gun on Ralf and Florian to get the rights to Autobahn???

Wolfgang mentions that Karl and his suits were tax exempt since they were for work, but since Ralf and Florians were bespoke they weren’t. I just found that funny

Michael Mertens of Propaganda went to Robert Schumann and was friends with Karl!

Also from Mertens: “For those hits he co-wrote, Karl of course recieved his PPL shares, but always at a reduced royalty rate since he had only joined the band after their first big success. The other two simply said: ‘Well we had Autobahn before we had you.’”

Wolfgang talks about the class divide within the band from him and Karl between Ralf and Florian.

KW went to the Bowie concert in Frankfurt. Apparently they all took turns driving, but Karl didn’t because he was bad at it and didn’t like driving.

Michael Rother should have played guitar on Heroes, but Bowies management ended up canceling it. They feared he’d be too experimental and sales would drop.
