someone stop me from talking about how fascinating sal marcano is as a character because there’s something so interesting about a man who cannibalizes his own family in order to rise to the top, only to have to turn around and do it to himself in order to protect his son lol

Mafia protagonists and violence
One origin of the Sicilian Mafia is said to be from the protection of lemon trees—the Italian state was very weak during the 19th century, and so it could not protect the people or their property very well.
Violence and the threat of violence then became a tool to solve problems with.
And each Mafia protagonist views and uses violence differently, sometimes closer to the original idea of protection, sometimes further.
Violence has never really been Tommy Angelo's choice of language. He's the least likely to resort to violence, and he views the Mafia as his job that just happens to be illegal. In fact, he never really gets used to violence, not really. He wanted to be able to talk about it with his wife like it was a normal job. Frank tried to teach him that enforcing Salieri's laws was no different than enforcing the state's. But still, Tommy only stomachs violence if he can justify it as self-defense. Ironically, the only time he's able to kill outside of that frame is in his last act of violence to leave the Mafia for good. To protect his family.
Vito Scaletta, by nature and by environment, resorts more quickly to violence. He's constantly surrounded by the idea that violence solves problems. The largest influences in his life--his father, the military, jail, and Joe—all reinforce this idea, and his mother and sister who don't, serve as an example of how to be exploited.
But, he also only uses force in an aggressive environment, whether that's in a shootout or to defend someone being harassed. In fact, Vito was the one trying to convince Joe not to go in guns blazing after Henry's death. He wanted to know why Henry was killed. What was the problem that pushed Wong toward murder? Was it justified?
In Mafia 3, he works fine with Cassandra despite clashing with them in the past because it was all business. No hard feelings because now he knows the rules to violence.
On the other hand, Lincoln Clay knows violence is just a means to an end. He's the most aware of the psychological intimidation factor associated with violence, and that's the entire basis of the game. A fight where no one fights is ideal, but the next best thing is a fight where the opponent is emotional and irrational and you have the advantage. Hell, he's probably been aware of that from a young age—how he appears to people, society and how to play to expectations. It's only gotten reinforced by the Vietnam War and CIA.
It's his tool for revenge, for interrogation, but he doesn't like prolonging it unnecessarily. He falls into violence as a way to ease his feelings for guilt a little bit, but then spares Alvarez when he remembers the ultimate purpose behind his violence: to protect others from Marcano.

Things I would change about the Mafia Trilogy
The Mafia trilogy is one of my all time favorite game series of all time, but if I could change anything about the game, this is what I would change
Mafia Definitive Edition
I would basically add in the ability to extort shops and take over and build on rackets like in The Godfather games.
Fast Travel by train/tram cars like in the original game
Keep in the Knuckles Duster
Keep in Yellow Pete
The ability to go on dates with Sarah, show a sex scene and show Tommy and Sarah's marriage and actually give names and show Tommy with his kids. I just feel like not enough was shown.
Show more of the Salieri-Morello war. I feel like not enough was shown. Sure we killed Sergio and Ghillotti and eventually Morello himself. But we never got to see the full scale war. It felt small. So my proposal see the Morello family hitting the bar and eventually Tommy, Paulie and Sam hit them back. The mission would end with Tommy, Sam and Paulie wacking Lou and Dino and torching Morello’s bar to the ground. I think this is something that should have happened cause we never got to see Lou and Dino again after the second mission and I think it would be Tommy properly paying them back for trying to kill him.
Show us Tommy Angelo's testimony against the Salieri Crime Family. Make it like the Goodfellas trial scene
Mafia 2
There is an entire cache of cut content that shows us a better game we almost got, but I'll just share a select few.
Respect & Reputation. In the beta version of the game players would experience Empire Bay differently based on the level of respect Vito gained from completing missions.
Monique. Vito's cut girlfriend that Vito could take out on dates
Fast travel via Taxi before you get made and via Limo after you get made
Gun License
Fight Club and Hound/Horse races
Side missions doing jobs for Derek, Harry and Mike
Keep in the cut content suggesting that Henry would be revealed being set up and not a rat. My two pieces of evidence. Evidence 1. Evidence 2. Also it was originally intended to have Henry be framed.
Mafia 3
Keep in the cut prologue
Replace Cassandra with Laveau or Lincoln rules the Black Mob. I feel like Cassandra had promise, but her execution was terrible and she just ended up becoming unlikable. Cassandra is hypocritical, self-righteous and endangers the people she claims to protect. She gives all this talk about protecting black people, but she endangers them the most and pretty much made New Bordeaux a ghost town in her ending. As for why Laveau? Laveau is a man of principals and honor. Black revolutionary and Black Panthers vibe. Plus the fact that Lee Everett himself voices him makes me like him all the more. I'm not sure how Laveau's ending would go, most likely New Bordeaux would've been turned into a safe haven for black people, something like that. I also like to think he could voice his own ending and say "Remember, when New Bordeaux speaks, you better listen." I feel like if Laveau was one of the underbosses, then I actually would feel conflict about choosing who to run New Bordeaux instead of just always choosing Vito. Or the simple solution is for Lincoln to recruit the survivors of the Black Mob and rule the Hollow by himself and further cements his rule by rebuilding Sammy's.
Make Agent Maguire apart of the story. My pitch is that he is on the hunt and would be leading the feds against Marcano and Lincoln respectfully. At some point, I don't know what mission, but Maguire has Lincoln right where he wants him, but chooses to let him go and his reasons were that Lincoln was the only one who did a damn thing against Marcano and thought letting him go was best for New Bordeaux as a young and foolish agent. In the documentary portion of the game, he later reveals he was wrong. It was so weird that this random FBI Agent had such a hard on for Lincoln when they never even crossed paths, so Maguire feeling guilt about letting Lincoln go would work imo
Give Lincoln a crew. Simply put advancing with Vito, Burke and Laveau or the Black Mob would give Lincoln individual crew members from The Movement/Black Mob, Italian and Irish Mobs. You can send them to accomplish the list of shit you need to do, fight with you and even send them to collect the collectibles in the district.
The ability to divide up the Bayou to give to your Underbosses. A way we could add in more earn for the Underbosses is to add in rackets in the Bayou. Enough for all 3 Underbosses
Use Signs Of The Times, Faster Baby and No Stone Unturned locations as territory to give your Underbosses. You'd be giving Sinclair Parish, the Sanitarium and the Island to your Underbosses. By doing this and the Bayou, you should have enough to give your Underbosses enough earn to unlock their perks if you are looking to keep everyone loyal and unlock everything
Cancelled Vito DLC makes it in. Not sure what the specifics of this cut DLC were or could've been, but most likely we would've found out Joe is still alive, maybe find out that Eddie was the one who was killed instead of Joe and maybe Vito would see Frankie again. Maybe it could've ended with Vito getting Joe free from Leo and killing Frank Vinci since that was cut from Mafia II. And at the end, perhaps Joe could tell Vito that Lincoln is his son and thanks his old friend for looking out for him.

one of the things i really appreciate about the mafia trilogy is the extent to which charisma & friendliness & love coexist with brutality & cruelty. i mention this constantly in the context of sal being a particularly well written villain but it applies across all the games. paulie being goofy and genuinely affectionate and clearly caring deeply about sam & tommy (especially in "a trip to the country" for example), but also beating the absolute shit out of people on collection duty to the point of serious permanent damage. joe being an incredibly close and loving friend to vito (not to mention henry, marty, etc) but frequently escalating violence without regret (the greasers arguably, accidentally killing leon, chapter 13) and seeming entirely unfazed about the drugs and about the idea shaking down struggling workers. henry showing clear affection toward vito & joe (sparing leo, saving joe from luca, keeping quiet in the hotel) but outside of that being incredibly coldhearted–the "only deadbeats do drugs" spiel, the gloating over killing pen, chapter 3 in general, not giving a shit about the rules by 1951. lou marcano, despite being a huge piece of shit, being locally famous and evidently incredibly charismatic. salieri's whole "benevolent boss" thing, no matter how bullshit it is. mike bruski being relatively friendly to vito at the junkyard only for joe to then describe him beating the shit out of a guy for spilling beer on his betting slip. luigi being a sweet, charming old man who used to be a feared hitman. hell, even vito beating up that guy at the docks at the beginning of ch3 because he wouldn't pay derek's bullshit barber fees, despite overall being motivated as a person largely by love (which he seems unable to express other than as "i will hurt people/be hurt for your sake"). obviously there are some total assholes like luca and clemente but they're presented as exceptions.
because that is, from what i've read at least, largely accurate to real life. of course you got some all around awful company but from what i've heard it seems like a lot of figures like luciano and lansky and capone did actually love their loved ones, and were charming and genuinely pleasant to hang out with if you were on their good side. and in order to work people over i guess you have to be. but in generally, people aren't card carrying supervillains. and it's nice seeing that they leaned into how normal and friendly these guys could come across when they weren't actively doing gangster things. it makes them scarier imo.

Some writing I did for John, just to better get a feel for his style. Can’t say I adore it but I tried! Commentary > likes. Photo credit here.
March 12
It’s humid, hot, and stinks of that fucking river in-country. New Bordeaux, Louisiana— Bourbon City, playpen of Salvatore Marcano and his family (and not just in the mob sense). If I knew Lincoln wasn’t going to burn this city to the ground, I would do it myself. The rich residents have their blood filled with Marcano’s heroin or hate and the poor ones don’t stand a damn chance at social mobility. The American Dream might as well be a nightmare to half of the residents. Southern manners my ass.
The Father’s not a big fan of me, but unfortunately for him, I’m used to it, between here and the Company. At least he’s kind enough to let me set up shop here until I can find a better place, which really isn’t saying much in a shithole of a city like this. It’s either mob-owned hotels worth ¾ of my paycheck or shitty motels in hick-controlled Hollow. But I’ve had worse. As long as it’s not another backwater hellhole, I can bear it, no matter the outcome. Until then, it’s just me and the Padre. And Lincoln, when he comes back around. (It’s not an “if”, I know that much.) And when he does, I’ll be ready.
March 27
The Padre and I agreed on a schedule to keep things running in the house. He watches Lincoln in the mornings and nights, and I take midday and late night shifts. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve fallen asleep next to Linc on those late night shifts. Need to buy more coffee. The air is always stuffy in the Padre’s house (I blame Louisianan humidity) so we open up windows sometimes. Doesn’t seem to help.
Anyway, this paperwork is a goddamn maze already. If mobsters have got one thing right, it’s their dedication to pissing off federal agents. I’d almost admire it if I wasn’t one myself.
March 30
Christ, just how many rackets does this asshole have? I’ve spent 4 days straight solely on Sal’s capos— I haven’t even had the time to look into Sal himself yet. To his credit, he sure as hell knows how to allocate resources. Then I’m here, downing the Padre’s entire fucking coffee pot pouring over tax returns from 1962. Princeton education at work.
Current findings are relatively clear at least; Lou deals with pimping and drugs, Olivia gets her highs from fucking with the Southern Union (which I’m assuming is an offshoot of the Ku Klux Klan, though I can’t say for certain), and Tommy does just about anything he can find. Public face, Southern charm, middle management. Haven’t had the opportunity to look into Enzo Conti yet, but records indicate he’s the least dickish of the Marcano family. For starters, he’s not a Marcano. That’s already a plus in my book.
All that’s left after the intel-phase is writing up dossiers on all these fuckers. Not hard by any means, but might as well keep it brief for Lincoln’s sake. And my own sanity.
I also found a place just out of reach of the Dixie Mafia (racist southern assholes, albeit the “normal” variety) on the other side of the Hollow. Considering how many times the Padre has told me to go fuck myself, it’s probably for the best that I get a room sooner rather than later. It’ll be nice to smoke without someone reciting Psalms two rooms over for once. Goal is to set up a tac-op center in one room and have the room next door to sleep. No promises that I’ll ever use that room, but it’s the thought that counts.
On that note, Lincoln’s condition appears to be stabilizing over the past 2 weeks. He’s still unconscious for the most part but he’s breathing regularly. I always knew he was thick-skulled. He’ll pull through. No matter how long it takes, I’ll be here.
May 15
Just picked up information that Hoover’s fairy brigade has set up shop in New Bordeaux. Headed by some guy named Jonathan Maguire, sent here from DC to deal with the little Marcano situation. Late to the party (as always). Might pay them a visit, see what intel they’ve got already.
May 18
Finally managed to install a wire into the FBI’s tac-op center and steal their files. Really professional of them to leave it unattended, but then again, I’m the uncontrollable variable in this American experiment. So far, the files are mostly what I gathered already, but the background is sure-as-hell interesting.
1934 is the stuff of local legend. The FBI cites the “official” story as just usual mob bullshit— revenge for the murder of a family member— but there’s an issue. Sal could have gotten his father off the hook for the gambling debts if he wanted. He didn’t. What he actually wanted was to take over New Bordeaux’s increasingly divided crime underbelly. So, he used his old man’s death as a rallying cry for revenge, and then took over New Bordeaux with force and fear. Reason I bring this up; he doesn’t want his son to do the same thing he did.
June 6
Goddammit.
First it’s John Kennedy, then Martin Luther, now it’s Bobby Kennedy. How much longer will this happen? The hell is this country fighting for? The fuck do we believe in? What happened to liberty and justice for all? What happened to men being created equal?
Jesus fucking Christ, I need a smoke.
Padre was nice enough to offer me a drink. At least he believes in a better America for all. Only if more priests were like that. Then maybe things wouldn’t be like this. The Father isn’t keen on violence but at least he’s not fucking spineless.
At least Lincoln didn’t have to see this shit. That’s the one positive here. The only one.

🦈👻🤩
for Mafia 3! (i’ve never sent an ask before so i hope this comes out right lol)
hi lovely it worked!! :)
🦈 — which character is the toughest to write?
donovan without a doubt. i think i’m starting to understand his speech patterns and shit like that but it’s still not great! he’s just so???? i can’t describe him he’s fascinating.
👻 — what is your wildest headcanon?
it’s not really wild, but i think that the marcano brothers have different mothers. especially because of the age difference between the oldest (lou) and the youngest (tommy). people can and do share the same parents with siblings much older or younger than them though. but still, idk. they’re all awful but im desperate to know more about them.
🤩 — what led to your interest in the fandom?
saw mafia 2 for sale on the xbox store, bought it and loved it. and then last summer i got covid and to make myself feel better i bought the trilogy which i fell in love with. the rest is history!

i’ve talked about how mob movies/the mafia trilogy in general treats women, but i was thinking about it and like. wives and mothers are the most fridged people in the trilogy. like, okay, let’s take a look at some of the mothers, right? and it’s like.
in MDE sarah’s mother is dead, and painted as a villain in sarah’s eyes (we’ll come back to her later). sarah herself, once she marries tommy, eventually loses everything when tommy flips, and has to live the rest of her life under an assumed identity and then without tommy after vito and joe roll up.
in M2, maria scaletta has a deadbeat drunk for a husband, and eventually dies of illness and a broken heart, while vito is in prison.
in M3, there’s sarah burke (danny and nicki’s mother), perla robinson, virginia marcano (giorgi’s mother). all of them, dead of some ‘illness’, most likely, since the only way to shove women aside is to have them die of ‘illness’, whatever the hell that entails.
(and these are just mothers, yk. like. let’s not go into the wives. betty. frank’s wife, serafina. lauretta, who is the only wife alive, and we never see her once. wives consigned to the dossiers, which might as well make them non-existent.)
circling back to sarah’s mother, who is unnamed, and we’re only ever given her initials. right, so sarah tells tommy that her mother was “an ugly, jealous drunk”, and like she’d throw shit at luigi and all that, but honestly like sometimes i wonder if it was just a frustrated woman stuck in a life that didn’t suit her. that she wanted to part in, and couldn’t voice her frustrations out to.
like. cmon. luigi was the most feared hitman in lost heaven, and if he was running with the mob from his youth, he would’ve been with peppone first, then salieri. and then he gets married, to this woman who probably doesn’t even have the first clue to what he does--- until she finds out.
what do you do when someone you love is a killer and a criminal and has enough blood on his hands to paint the walls of your house red? pair that up with running a household, trying to take care of a young, impressionable daughter, a daughter who takes after her father so fiercely that there’s nothing you can do but sit back and watch?
like. we’ve all seen the letter in the prison. mrs marino asking for luigi to give up gunning people down, give up his supposed affairs, and all that mob-life stuff. like... i don’t know. sarah probably only thinks of her mother badly because of how much she loves her father, and how much this life, this thing of theirs, had its grip on her. the mob was all she knew. and i’m sure her mother tried to sway her from it, tried to get her to live a simple, quiet life, but god, sarah couldn’t just leave her father.
“a ugly, jealous drunk”, but when you realize exactly what position mrs marino was in... a killer for a husband, a daughter so deep in the mob clutches. she must’ve turned to drink, started to lash out at luigi in resentment for hiding who he was, for the company he kept, for all the secrets their marriage was built on.
these games have no sympathies for women who can see through the lies of men, the mafia, and the world they live in. none at all.
