someone stop me from talking about how fascinating sal marcano is as a character because there’s something so interesting about a man who cannibalizes his own family in order to rise to the top, only to have to turn around and do it to himself in order to protect his son lol
#sal marcano#mafia 3#sal + tommy are my favorite marcanos to talk about but... i am thinking about sal and lucio so hard rn

Ignore the early post I meant to draft that BUT ANYWAY
So I’m not exactly an aficionado on westerns, I just like history (enough to major in it) so take this all with a grain of salt.
Here is my sorta-kinda-western-ish-adjacent AU!
Time: Post Civil War (1868)
The war officially ended in 1865, when Lincoln was 20, albeit he served for years before as a Union soldier in Louisiana. (LA actually has a really complex history with the Civil War, with NOLA being Union but Louisiana technically being Confederate, and there being two governors simultaneously with differing loyalties… it was confusing, to say the least.)
This actually lines up decently well with Abraham Lincoln’s assassination in 1864 as John’s “catalyst”, but we’ll get there later. The core idea here is that Lincoln is a Civil War vet who spent time undercover and training other Black soldiers for the Union.
Location: New Bordeaux still, I guess?
…Okay so I guess Louisiana isn’t really “western”. My bad. But it fits well. NB, being a ripoff of NOLA, likely has similar tensions politically; pro-Union versus Confederate sympathizers, free Black people (who had been there for a long while, actually) and newly-emancipated-freedmen versus plantation owners and the new “sharecropping” business, etc.
Specifically, I think NB’s tensions would really well encapsulate the situation following the Civil War a lot more succinctly than throwing it into the west. There’s still horses! Just not as much sand. Hope that doesn’t ruin the vibe too much.
Lincoln Clay: the Union Soldier
Okay so, I blame my Black history class, but Linc really reminds me a lot of the archetypal Black Union solider in a lot of ways. Fighting for community rights and identity, publicity (for better or for worse), struggles with personal identity (“am I [Black] or am I an American?”), so on; the fact that he’s mixed would also create a divide that was sort of explored in-game, but not much.
Ultimately though, no matter the time, Lincoln is still Lincoln. Except here he’s a horse guy. Because no cars. Yay horses! Still very unoriginal with names though.
Robinson Family: …? (Unsure)
The best thing I can truly think of is Sammy escaping to NB for freedom (since in canon, he was a sharecropper’s son) and meeting Perla there— maybe born free, albeit not exactly wealthy— and getting his start in helping people flee south to Mexico or north to Canada. Then he gets established in the community, builds up his own legacy, so on and so forth. Now as for how he meets Marcano, I don’t really know yet. Smuggling? Maybe?? Give ideas if you have any!
Burke Family: Moonshine + Horses
What it says on the tin. Thomas Burke is an immigrant from Ireland following the Irish Famine in the 1840s, established himself through liquor and horses, and got involved with whatever he could get his hands on.
Nicki’s still a lesbian. That’s not changing. Queer history for the win.
Danny? A horse guy? More likely than you think! Well, for this, at least.
Marcanos: the ‘New Money’ (Confederate Sympathizers)
So, contrary to what some people (cough Redditors) would probably say, the Marcanos are new money. Where did that money come from? A lot of places, but mostly criminal and collusion with police. Recapturing “runaways” (you can deduce what that means), buying up land, human trafficking, alcohol, dubious medicine, so on. Admittedly my knowledge on Sicilian immigration patterns pre-1900 is not my wheelhouse, but I know they existed and the mafia was a thing, even if not well-known, prior to the 1920s. So whatever criminal and police-based enterprises there were, the Marcanos did it. They made a shitton off of pre-Civil War tensions and even quite a bit from ‘playing both sides’. Remember, Sal outwardly is neutral on politics.
Same story/character beats. It translates so well. I can see Lou being the mayor/running for mayor of New Bordeaux, but beyond that, it’s roughly the same. Also yes there would be stuff in Cuba. American imperialism in Latin America is rather old. Yay.
John Donovan: the Pinkerton Agent
Can’t do anything from this era without the Pinkertons showing up. So boom. There you go. Now I do think he took an interest in international affairs, but it was the 1850s, he couldn’t have done a whole lot unless he got into politics. So national detective agency (created by a Scottish-American) it is!
He served alongside Lincoln as a “handler” of sorts, not unlike in-canon, and both played a role in clandestine operations. I’d probably insert lore here about missions/mishaps/etc but I’ll spare y’all that tangent. Just know that John hates Confederates. And Confederate sympathizers. And Andrew Johnson (mainly because of the Declarations of Amnesty throughout the 1860s that allowed former Confederates— and I mean top generals— back into the Union with no punishment). And also the weather. This guy hates a lot of things, huh?
Vito Scaletta: the Carpetbagger
I mean, he was forced against his will to go down, but he does kind of fit the bill. Sorry Vito
Cassandra: the Reader
You and I have had the conversation about m3 needing tarot, and so hey, why not have Cassandra fit that role? I will acknowledge that a lot of the “mystic” characters of westerns are really detrimental Romani stereotypes, so this role might not be the most appropriate. But it’s also 1868 and Cassandra is a Haitian woman in Louisiana.
There are rumors that she was kicked out of Haiti. Hm… Unique lore moment? Who knows
Plot: the exact same.
Literally the same thing. Robbery, betrayal, revenge (but-also-kinda-not). Enough said.
Other Changes
Remy is still in the definitely-not-bootleg-KKK. Spent time in Pulaski with NBF. Responsible for terrorizing a LOT of Black Union soldiers to “send a message”. “War of Northern Aggression” bullshit. Only makes his death more satisfying!
Laveau & Co. as a part of the freedmen’s bureau (or whatever equivalent you want to use)
Not really a change but hey, at least most of the women dying would make sense now, I guess
Inclusion of some Black senators and representatives— more prominent then than during the 1960s
TLDR; Reconstruction-era Louisiana, Lincoln Clay as a Union vet (and John as a Pinkerton), Marcanos as new money, and the story as functionally the same. Also fuck Andrew Johnson. All my homies hate Andrew Johnson for fucking up Reconstruction with his “Southern sympathy” bullshit.
Sorry I’m from Tennessee I got beef
oh my god. mafia 3 western au

One of the most tragic parts is that Sammy and Ellis were always going to die.
Sal Marcano asks Lincoln to run the mob, but it wouldn’t have saved his family. It only would’ve saved himself. Sal was always going to order that hit. He didn’t give one single damn that Sammy hadn’t kicked up to him in months. Sal always knew he was going to kill them all. He wanted to go legit. He wanted his casino, and of course he’d go after his Black allies first.
Sal wanted everybody he ever associated with dead, and he went after the Black mob first before anyone else because they were Black. And part of Lincoln does know this. You can tell in the brief exchange between him and Giorgi at the end.
But another part of Lincoln still believes Sammy and Ellis’ deaths were his fault. That if he had just said “Yes” everyone would still be alive. But that’s not what was going to happen. Sal would’ve recruited Lincoln into his side of business, and still left his family as burnt up corpses on the floor.
The tragedy is that Lincoln’s family was always going to die and he was always going to be the one left alive.
#if Lincoln had said yes he would’ve been even more messed up when Sammy and Ellis died anyway#mafia series#mafia: 3#mafia 3#mafia iii#lincoln clay#I love this game#lexi plays mafia 3#analysis#mafia trilogy

It's the year 2023 and America's newest hotspot has emerged from the shadows. New Bordeaux is truly the place to be. From high-end shops and the world-famous New Bordeaux Opera House in the Downtown District to the colorful communities in Delray Hollow, New Bordeaux has everything you need and more. Tourists often visit the city without knowing the dangers that lurk in the dark.
Like most cities, New Bordeaux harbors its own dark secrets. Its history runs as far back as the 1960s, the century where Lincoln Clay, alongside his underbosses Cassandra, Thomas Burke and Vito Scalleta turned the Italian Mafia upside down. The Underworld was shaken and the city changed drastically after Lincoln's disappearance.
Fast forward to over 60 years later, the hustle and bustle of New Bordeaux has only grown in size. After Lincoln Clay's disappearance and the fall of Italian Mob Boss Sal Marcano, men and women with dreams of their own began their own businesses, slowly taking charge of parts of the city without much of a bother to anyone else. New Bordeaux has been divided, and there is a silent threat in the air of an all-out war erupting from the darkness.
Find your place in the city, and above all, stay alive.

feel like you could do something cool with the ‘dirty blade’ prompt
I’ve been writing Canary a bit more so here’s an argument between them and Lincoln for funsies
He is halfway to the door.
“So where does it stop? With my cousin being dead? With— with this city in goddamn flames? Because this shit is cyclical. It never ends. You kill every man who ever looked at Sal and you wind up with half of New Bordeaux’s blood on your hands.”
Lincoln wheels back around, murder in his eyes. Was this kid really trying to pull this shit? He knew they were vocal about their opinions, but not like this. Canary kept pacing, rocking on their heels and staring directly at Lincoln. This was the most eye contact they’d made since he’d met them.
“You suggestin’ I drop it? Let this shit slide?”
“No— but there’s gotta be an ‘after’ to all of this.” Canary’s speech is rapid, tense with fear hidden in the throat. They were trying to make their point. Canary knows they’re dancing on the edge of a dirty blade here, so they spat out everything they could before Lincoln could respond.
Lincoln makes no response, instead tilting his head to the side. He crosses his arms.
Canary continues. “So the Marcanos all die, brutally. They get what they deserve, because they do deserve it, don’t think I disagree on that. But they become martyrs. Martyrs to the cause that will hurt everyone in this fucking city, not just you.”
“This don’t even apply to you—”
“You realize I have more friends than just you and Donovan, right?” They give a short, sardonic laugh. “You two get to leave after this. Ty can’t. Marie can’t. My Aunt May can’t, the citizens of Delray Hollow sure as hell can’t, fuck, maybe the Frisco fuckers can, but no one else besides you and Donovan.”
He stares.
“Oh my fucking god— Lincoln, just listen to me—”
“The fuck else am I supposed to do?”
“Publicize it,” they plead. “Talk with someone who can get others to listen. Shit, John’s got a journalism degree, he could help you! I could help you! Let the truth hang them, not you!”
“They make the fuckin’ truth. Always have.” His voice is a low, warning tone. “Nothin’ will change with words.”
“I disagree.”
“Yeah? Give me a time when words saved someone.”
They say nothing.
“My goal is to make Sal feel everything I did. To watch as his empire crumbles underneath him.”
“What’s the point then? What comes after?”
“After that, I’ll do as I damn well please.”
“That’s a non-answer—”
#‘canary’#lincoln clay#my writing#yes canary is Giorgi’s cousin- big reveal#it’s not a biological thing it’s more a family-friend situation#I struggled so hard with this prompt but I tried

sal marcano as the sinister reflection of tommy angelo. “everything i’ve done, i’ve done for my family” taken to its most horrible extreme. everything else will come and go but family is forever. “find yourself a nice woman, give me some fucking grandkids.” times are changing, this isn’t sustainable anymore. finally betraying the crime family for your immediate family. getting tired of looking over your shoulder and just wanting a way out, to go straight, a better life for your kid–how far would you go for it? who gets fucked over in the process?

7 & 12 for the mafia series 😈
🔥 choose violence ask game 🔥
7. what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how how the fandom acts about them?
john donovan. i don't like what everyone makes of him, which is sad bc i really really thought he was going to be my favorite character when i first started m3 but now i just don't think of him at all.
12. the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them
sal marcano :) he's just such a good character, and everyone just hates him bc he's a villain but he's so well-written and complex, and his motivations aren't just 'oh hurr durr i want to control everything' but more of. a man who has lived a lifetime of regrets and is trying so desperately to fix it for his son.

MAFIA 3 SPOILERS!!!
I cannot stop thinking about Vito's death scene. He says that he's given up EVERYTHING for the lifestyle he led. There's a real emphasis on how anything that could possibly be given up, he has lost it all, whether it be voluntarily or not.
The "I deserve better" line too...After Joe "died" and before Vito was moved to New Bordeaux, I think it was about two years between these two events, he was definitely going through some of the worst years of his life. The city he grew up in, the city both of his parents died in, the city that he had been trying to build up probably felt like a total wasteland. Every corner had memories that he could not, would not allow to be replayed in his mind. It wouldn't have been surprising if he had really dived into alcohol and late-night company, as well as flat-out refusing to carry out orders that he didn't agree with. Leo must've been doing the best he could to keep him safe from those wanting him dead but after so long of Vito just refusing to do much of anything, Leo decided it would be best for Vito to get a change of scenery.
New Bordeaux's cities are filled with as much life as possible and Vito feels as though he does have a chance to start anew, to have chances to not let the same mistakes happen again. So imagine being in the middle of turning your life around the best you can and then things from the past start poking through the safety net you've worked so hard to make. Joe is alive. Joe is dead. Vito doesn't have a clue. Sal is a horrible boss to be under and Vito knows that even if he did bow down to every single order Sal gave him, Vito still wouldn't be promoted in any way. This new place isn't all that better, there's still a sense of being in a sort of limbo. He deserved better than to be stuck doing something in which he could easily be replaced. AND HE BELIEVES THIS. Vito knows his worth and knows he could be doing more, that he's capable of more.
And Lincoln saying that Vito just couldn't be content with what he built up had me thinking that Vito got greedy to justify all of his loss and grief, not solely because he wanted the power-trip. He never gave up on this lifestyle because it would be like everything and everyone he lost was for nothing. He has more purpose now, more drive. More motivation to do more good than bad.
The ending that gives Vito complete control over New Bordeaux shows that he does do good and that all along, he has been capable of so much more. He builds hotels, convention centers, and arenas. LITERALLY CHANGED THE ENTIRE CITY AND MADE IT SUPER WELL-KNOWN. And although it isn't explicitly stated, he most definitely helped rebuild the Hollow, helped open up Frisco Fields' theme park, and donated to hospitals and schools just as Lincoln had done.
Anyways long live laugh love Vito Scaletta

Just played the Faster Baby DLC and it was amazing! Everything about it was great. Laveau and especially Roxy Laveau were phenomenal. MJ’s one cool dude. Herbalism. Wrecking a sundown town into smithereens. MY GOD!
Everything was FANTASTIC, and I think one of my favorite elements of it is that it feels like a haven for Lincoln. Like an actual refuge, somewhere safe he can be with people who genuinely like him.
These are Lincoln’s people. They’re not his family from the Black Mob, but he still helped them out because their cause is important to him. He cares about it and about them. Nevermind the fact that Laveau is a respectable leader with good people at his side. Not criminals who are only looking to get one over on each other. And they want Lincoln to join in, or at least see them as a welcoming place for him. A possible home.
This entire DLC felt like a breath of fresh air from a gameplay perspective, but also likely in-universe for Lincoln too. To remember that Sal Marcano isn’t the most important cause in the world, and that the mob isn’t the only one he can rely on. That he doesn’t only have to be Lincoln The Avenger. That he can also be Lincoln the Freedom Fighter. Lincoln the Protector. Lincoln the Savior. And even Lincoln the Lover.
This DLC was so so so good.

To correlation to this and this post
I now present to you
Mafia 3 characters I’d let smash, but it gets progressively worse
Let's start easy
Since I'm solemnly convinced this is Joe Barbaro, I'd let him smash me first. He can literally look like a racoon and I'd let him get it 😌
Let's not forget about DILF with huge bakery, Vito Scaletta. He can get it any day
Lincoln Clay. Whoever says they WOULDN'T let him is a dirty liar, we all know he is fuckable and those lips are asking for it
John Donovan. I mean.. Come ooon. He's got it all. He's unhinged and good looking , you know he'd clap you good
Little weasel, fucker Giorgi. If we forget about the nasty good ol' double he pulled on Lincoln, he wasn't such an ass and I'd put his straight 😌
Connor bitchface Aldridge. I hate him. I love him. Something in this little pathetic traitor makes my heart speed up
Thomassss Burke. All I can say is I'd make him right
Sal Marcano. Did you see him on those MDE card? DID YOU?!
#That's all I have for now folks#Considering to add Remy Duvall#Only for the fact I'd peg the racism out of him#Mafia3#vito scaletta#joe barbaro#lincoln clay#john donovan#Connor aldridge#giorgi marcano#thomas burke#Sal marcano
