I have always been open about how the au is simply a merope lives/voldemort reborns AU, everything else previously is the same, as this au requires tom jr to be there and I simply dont think that tom snr would engage with merope willingly lol and I dont feel like whitewashing merope, it erases part what I think its interesting abt her character, that she commited a terrible crime that one cant sugarcoat, much like her son.

Its abt voldemort having a new chance and merope redemption (even when I dont think merope can ever make it up to her victim, directly) as person, If that makes you uncomfortable I totally get it.

if tom riddle had somehow been found in the orphanage while he was a baby and been adopted by the riddle family, do you think they would have changed his name? i cant imagine them just keeping the name marvolo. how would tom jrs life turned out if his family had raised him?

what tom jr.'s life would have been like if tom sr. had raised him is something i've had a couple of other asks for, so that's coming at another time.

but on the name thing:

i do think that the riddles would probably have changed wee tom's name... because "tom" is a diminutive. tom riddle sr. would legally have been "thomas", and his nickname would only have been used among close friends or family.

the norms on this have changed a lot in the past thirty-or-so years - and diminutives [including, of course, "harry"] are now widely used in britain as standalone names by all social classes - but in the 1920s it would have been thought of as extremely vulgar for a child to be legally named "tom" or "tommy" instead of "thomas".

[which is an important character detail about the canonical voldemort - he's not just legally "tom" in order to make the anagram work. it's yet another thing which marks him out as working-class among his peers at hogwarts.]

so tom jr. would definitely be upgraded to thomas, at the very least. the riddles might also consider changing his name altogether - although it's worth saying that it wouldn't automatically signify anything for him not to be named after his father [that is, tom sr. might not want his son to share his name because the idea has negative connotations for him, but nobody outside of the family would realise this]. it's much, much less common in britain - both historically and today - for firstborn sons to be named after their fathers than it is in other parts of the world, even in the [non-royal - it's more common among royalty for the establishment of dynastic mystique] upper-classes.

what is common among families from the riddles' class-background is choosing from a fairly tight selection of names which turn up across the generations.

so, let's say that tom sr. is thomas william edward riddle - and his father is william robert george riddle - and his grandfather was robert james edward riddle - and his great-grandfather was thomas george louis riddle... then we have a series of potential names for tom jr. to end up having bestowed upon him.

and i think he would. although not - i think it's worth saying - because keeping the name "marvolo" would indicate anything to wider society that the riddles would prefer to keep hidden. it sounds enough like a surname that this could be what they explained it away as - taking advantage of the fact that merope wasn't around to say otherwise to put about the story that tom jr.'s mother was some sort of exotic beauty ["marvolo" would sound plausibly like an italian surname to many english speakers, for example] who died in glamorously tragic circumstances. including the mother's maiden name as [one of] the child's middle name[s] is a common practice in britain.

instead, i think the riddles would change his name because i love to take harry-tom parallels wherever i can find them, and i imagine that they would share the dursleys' belief that not acknowledging the existence of magic would keep it away from wee tom...

I loved Metamorphosis! You're incredibly talented and your elegant writing definitely kickstarted my interest in Dumbledore's character. I remember being absolutely hooked and not being able to put my phone down throughout the first nine chapters, and waiting in excruciating but exciting anticipation for chapter ten!

I was wondering: Does Tom (little Tommy) ever find out that his 'uncle' is him, only a time traveler? I think that perhaps the scene where he asks Voldemort what happened to his father indicates that he thinks Voldemort knows more than he lets on. Not to mention the fact that magically, they're identical twins, and if Tommy were to ever find this out it would raise some peculiar questions. Do you think Tommy would piece the puzzle together, eventually? Before, or after Voldemort and Dumbledore's deaths? If before, would he confront Voldemort about it? If after, how would he deal with this information?

This is a lot of questions, I know, but please don't feel any pressure to answer! I'm just curious haha, and I'd love to know only if you have the time to answer.

I loved writing Metamorphosis! So glad you enjoyed it!

Yes, I think Tom will find out about his 'uncle' and the time travel. Probably before Voldemort's death. I imagine Voldemort will refuse to speak about it, though, just as he refuses to talk to Albus about his past. He won't be able to deny it, especially if Tom has proof like the fact magic sees them as identical twins, but he will simply refuse to expand on the subject.

I imagine Tom does find out mostly because of Merope. One short trip in her head, at some point, and- yeah. Mind you, her head is an extremely confusing place to be, what with her delusions, but Tom will piece together enough.

He probably got glimpses since he was a boy, what with his Legitimacy, but Merope lives in the reality she wants, in her head, at any given moment, so I think it will be hard to snatch anything of substance from her, until he's much, much older.

For the ask game

So, Cecilia is Tom Riddle Sr's lady friend (perhaps fiancée) as seen in HBP. This fic is written from her perspective, where, while doing charity work, she happens upon a young boy in an orphanage who shares her ex-fiancé's name and appearance. This leads her and Tom Sr to become reacquainted, resulting in canon divergence. I have written 10k or so of it, but I'm not sure how much I'll keep as I think a lot of this pre-Merope writing can be boiled down to a couple of scenes. I'm also still working out characterisation for Tom Sr and Cecilia as they're almost OCs with the amount we know about them.

A scene:

“He’s the spitting image of you,” Cecilia marvelled, looking between the solemn little face in the photograph and Tommy reading a book in the very same chair, his feet just as far from the floor.

“Yes,” Tom said. He looked conflicted—a strange mixture of pride and anxiety. “But who’s to say that we’ll look the same when he grows older.”

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he remained identical. The resemblance is uncanny,” Cecilia said, assuming his concern was Tommy taking after his unsightly mother. She nudged his shoulder with her knee and smiled. “The same handsome face as his father.” It came out more flirtatious than she had intended. Without thinking she had spoken to him as she would have when they were at Cambridge together. But they no longer had that intimate relationship.

Before the embarrassment could take hold, Tom was speaking again. He didn’t look appeased by her words; if anything, his expression had grown more troubled. “Perhaps it would suit him better to be plainer.”

Cecilia was surprised that he would say that of a son. She could imagine herself thinking it, if she had a daughter with Tommy’s cherubic, doll-like features. Knowing well the unwanted attention that would come frighteningly early in childhood. Never had she thought that a boy might suffer the same disadvantage, nor had she ever the impression that Tom was displeased with his own features. But Tom would know better than her, she was sure. Besides, she knew nothing of the past half-decade of his life. They were all but strangers to each other.

Tommy shut the book with a loud snap.

“What did you think?” Tom asked, jovial again, poor mood forgotten.

Tommy glared at him and scuttled off to hunt down more books between the narrow aisles of the library. Strange creature, Cecilia thought. She wondered if all children were as odd as Tommy. She’d scarcely spent any time with them since she was one.

He returned a short while later with a stack of nine books including, Cecilia noted, the novel that he’d just finished reading. Much to her surprise, he plopped himself down on the floor beside his father and set them all out.

SHERLOCK HOLMES was embossed in gold on the leather of each book.

“You’ve read all of these,” Tom said, glancing curiously down at the titles.

“I hate them,” Tommy said without preamble. “They’re all cheats.”

“Cheats?” Tom repeated, sounding amused. “How so?”

“You can’t solve the mysteries before Holmes in almost all of them. I’ve checked. They keep too much a secret. That’s cheating.”

It was the most Cecilia had ever heard him talk. That he was entirely ignoring her existence did not escape her notice. Perhaps he spoke more to his father when she wasn’t there? It was only now that she observed his accent—the coarse twist of his vowels, the careful emphasis that he placed on the ‘h’ in Holmes so as to not drop it like other Cockneys. It surprised her. Her impression of Tommy had never been of an image-conscious child but, in this regard, it seemed he was.

“I suppose that’s true,” Tom said. Cecilia knew that he had little interest in fiction. She doubted he’d ever engaged critically with a novel in his life—compulsory English classes exempted. His preferred form of entertainment was the latest edition of Reviews of Modern Physics or, on occasion, visiting the pictures to watch Charlie Chaplin fall down thirty times.

Eurythmy for Merope's second name (it's from greek, it means "harmonious rhythm").

Tolvonam for Merope's father, a dark-sounding name. Its meaning is lost in time. Or maybe Gaunts invented it.

Such a unique name. Why does LV hate it? Because at the orphanage the matrons thought that the name was a bit too much, so they called her Tommy. Tommy, always Tommy.

Also because it's the name which honors her father and her blood family, one worse than the later. Lady Voldemort won't suffer the name of the father who has abandoned her, the mother who has abandoned her, the grandfather who would have killed her at birth.

Yes, I know it's not smooth. In my defense, Merope was literally dying.

Do you think that you would ever write a fic where Merope survives? If she does, do you imagine that she would love/be good to her son, or would she (as Tom says in Ganymede) control him and mold him to her liking?

Ooof.

Ideally, I would sidestep this question and link you to some wonderful Merope fic, but both of my friends who have told me about their fantastic ideas for Merope-centered stories have not published them (yet, possibly ever), and I am stuck.

If you think this vaguepost is directed at you, friend—it is.

I, er, have written myself into hating Merope. I love Tom Senior so much, and a constant for my portrayal of him is that his relationship with Merope was entirely nonconsensual. This holds across all of my AUs, modern or period, canon-divergent or completely unfounded. So of course I don’t like the person who abducted and repeatedly raped him, and I am not currently the author to write a sympathetic portrayal of her. I remain hopeful that I could persuade myself otherwise if I read some thoughtful takes on Merope, but she’s too niche a character for there to be a big backlog of great Merope fic. I’ve mostly seen short one-shots, and they’re only just fine, not persuasive enough to get me to reconsider.

So let us instead engage with the controlling Merope, which I acknowledge is not the only possible take, but is the one I am capable of delivering.

Merope is a young mother, and she was raised in an emotionally, possible physically, abusive household. We’re not sure how long her mother lived, or what her behavior was like. We know that Merope responded to the very real abuse and stress of her life by abusing someone else, and she may not have even seen her actions as abuse—we have no particular reason to believe that she was not also a blood purist, and she might easily have given no thought to Tom Senior’s wellbeing, for all that she treated him as an object of her love. He was only a Muggle.

In this take, it bodes poorly for her son. Her son is magical and a descendant of Slytherin, but he’s also a half-blood. He looks like the man who (in her view) spurned her. He’s a child, and he requires work. He will fuss, at least at first. And if she, in a moment of desperation, lacking the knowledge or resources to take another path, brews a potion/uses a spell to keep little Tommy quiet and contained, is that such a shock? If it becomes a habit, because it works when so much else does not, and it works immediately, is that surprising? She can do this while caring very much about her son. Frankly, I don’t even want to begin speculating about the ways in which this would negatively impact young Tom, other than to say that it would, undeniably. His issues with love might look entirely different, but I absolutely believe they would be there. God only knows what his issues with Muggles would look like, raised as a half-blood knowing his heritage by a mother who raped one.

And, ultimately, this is why I reunite father and son when I am trying to give Tom Junior a loving parental relationship. For all of Senior’s faults, he’s the character I’d rather rehabilitate.

i don't have anything even vaguely amusing to say about this one. i just think it would be really lovely for there to be a universe in which merope could survive her difficult childbirth, mrs cole could nurse her back to health, and wee tom could have a family.

especially because i am - for my sins - a member of the mrs cole defence league. she gets a lot of shit from many of the voldemort-enjoying corners of this fandom, but i think it's much more interesting to see her as a woman doing her best in extremely trying circumstances - even if she undoubtedly falls short of what many of her charges actually need - rather than as a nurse-ratched-style sociopath who goes out of her way to brutalise the children in her care.

merope, too, is someone i'm on the record that the fandom could do with treating with much more nuance [and much more humanity] than she often is.

both of them, then, can be written as capable of genuine love and joy and redemption and so on - and though a sickbed in an orphanage might not seem the obvious place for these things to be found... i back it all the same.

My 2 cents:

- I usually love genderbend names

- my fave is Tamsin / Tommy. Merope certainly wasn't worried about muggle name convention, she would just name her daughter after her father.

- I am trying to mess around with her middle name to create something around "I am Lady Voldemort" / "Behold Lady Voldemort" or such. For now no definitive combination.

- Pros of Tamsin: I really like it

- Pros of Tommy: Lady Voldemort's rage at being called Tommy by Albus

- honorable mention : Tom. Just Tom. It may seems absurd but it happened that in very rare case parents chose names from the different genre. Merope would do it, the matrons wouldn't care.
