Bi Han didn’t really recognize the tradition, until you. To him, it was just another day, as most holidays—life in the Lin Kuei was much different than the one outside of it. So when you showered him with affection and adorned him with gifts unexpectedly, it kind of flustered him underneath that poker-faced and grumpy exterior of his. Bi Han gives you flowers (real and ones of ice), and the occasional silver jewelry every other year. It makes him subtly smile under his mask when he sees you wearing it.

It’s Johnny Cage’s second favorite day of the year, other than his birthday. If he remembers this day, he absolutely spoils you rotten to the core with gifts; flowers, chocolates, new clothes, rose petals in the bed and in a dimly lit bath (and if you drink, your favorite wine), the whole nine yards. It’s cliche, but Johnny Cage doesn’t let you leave until you’re completely loved up.

Kenshi takes a breather from all his outside work on this day to love on you. You wake up to an empty bed, but that’s because he’s cooking breakfast (or lunch) for you—he’s exceptional at it, and you both thoroughly enjoy your day with each other. Kenshi prefers spending Valentine’s day inside, but if you want to go out, he’ll take you anywhere you want to go and buy you whatever you want. Of course, you do the same and he is very happy, even if he doesn’t explicitly say so.

Kuai Liang already has his gifts laid out for you. He planned in advance; duty calls and he wouldn’t be able to spend the morning or so with you in his warm embrace, so that he could greet you as soon as you woke and smother you with hot kisses. Kuai Liang leaves a heartwarming letter, and when he comes back from his day, gives you an even warmer massage to kick things off a bit. Whatever happens next is completely up to you.

Kung Lao already knows you love him, but it’s nice to be reminded of that with your affection. In turn, he takes you out to a fancy (and surprisingly private) dinner in an unsung corner of Madam Bo’s shop (or some other fancy place), somewhere where you could see the stars in the night sky. He loves to look at the way your eyes gleam in the moonlight, and he says so outright amongst other loads of compliments. Kung Lao makes sure to make you laugh a ton tonight.

Raiden looks like a hopeless romantic today even though he's in a relationship with you. He plans almost months in advance; the flowers he planted were kept all year and were finally going to be harvested just to give you. Raiden makes an effort to give you everything you want, take you anywhere you want. You’re sure to return the favor at the end of the day with your own presents, whatever they may be.

Tomas spends the night before and the entire day of practically clinging to your side. You’ve never had a weighted blanket until now, and you both could’ve spent the entire day in bed if you’d let him have you that way (he’s already asked Kuai Liang for the day off). Tomas leaves the bed once you do, and when he comes back, he comes back with gifts. He got the flowers last because he wanted them to be as fresh as possible.

+ Liu Kang leaves a humble setup of a table full of gifts for you. He’s also the one to leave a sappy note of apology and not-all-that empty (but not all that full) promises to you, to return just before the night was over after his duty at the temple were done with. Although he believes he doesn’t need a holiday to want you the inexplicable way he does, he understands the holiday and humors you when he sees how much it makes you hot in the face for him.

However,

Don’t you dare take the jewelry off after Bi Han got you pressed into the mattress. With every tear into you, his eyes don’t just train on your damp fucked-out face twisted in overstimulation from him ruining your hole over and over again tonight. His eyes flit up to the sight of the ring on your finger peeking from the boughs of crinkled sheets from you holding on too tight, and your necklace jittering further from your sternum to neck with every thrust… Bi Han’s eyes screw shut as he hilts with sudden roughness, your surprised hiccup overlapping with the so-rare whimper as he pumps you full.

- if it takes a lot for him to give praises, i believe it takes a lot more for him to laugh- this seals the deal

- "Bi Han! Help!" you'd cry out, and he'd come running to find your knees touching each other as they face inwards. His eyes would find your hands covering the huge rip on your bum, and your pretty, cotton, everyday panties peeking through

- still, he'd go great lengths to cover you up so you'd have some dignity left. he'd take off that outer layer of his uniform and drape it over you, and it'd do the job well because he's two heads taller than you

- if you try to remind him that he laughed, he'd literally deny it til his death

- still, even as he denies it all, you know he's thinking about it when he looks away from you and his left eyebrow (yes, you studied his facial expressions) is quirked up roughly ten degrees

- he'd be the most flustered out of the three

- raised in cultures that regard women to a high standard (slavic traditions of the Czech Republic and the Lin Kuei), he'd put you first for sure. not without feeling embarrassed, if not more, for you

- "Tomas!" you screech from your shared room of Harumi's compound. "Tomas, you get here this instant!"

- he'd show up from a fissure of smoke, face scrunched up in worry as he assesses the situation. you're panicked, and he needs to remain calm or else you'll panic more

- he'd actually find the piece of fabric that ripped off. it'd probably be hooked on a splintered piece of wood from the side-wall of the tatami door. taking it, he'd foolishly look around your bum and leg area to find the rip

- "Hey!" you'd giggle-screech. "Don't be a perv!"

- i think Tomas would be very sad and borderline offended you'd think of him like that. he'd give you a look, that's for sure, and he'd continue to quietly assess your circumstance

- only when he finds the little frills of your lacy undies will he turn the deepest shade of pink possible on the human body. he'd flail around like a fish out of water, stuttering and finding something to cover you

- he'd drape you in a blanket, the one on your bed. then he'd pick you up and toss you right back into the pillowy mattress. he'd rush out and find one of Harumi's handmaidens (or Harumi herself) and discreetly tell her about the situation

- your replacement clothes for the meanwhile would be a kimono, similar to Harumi's. as you'd get changed, Tomas doesn't look at you one bit

- "I am ashamed to have looked..." Tomas pouts from behind the dressing screen. "I apologize, feather..."

- even as he tries to get you new pants, he can't help but think about the situation he was in. he would associate those specific pants to that situation- always

- and unlike Bi Han, you'd hold this shit over his head until the day he dies

- you'd egg him like "remember when my pants ripped and you were hiding from me?" or "remember when you threw me into bed because of my pants?"

- yeah, he would be the one more embarrassed than you. he wouldn't be living it down, either, until the day he died

Kuai Liang

- Kuai might be the most normal in terms of reaction, unfortunately. not without a good chuckle, though

- "Kuai Liang! A little help here, please!" you'd call for him from the living room of Harumi's compound. he'd rush to you almost instantly, definitely wondering why you remain sitting there when there was nothing or no one to be hosted

- "You are just... sitting..." Kuai Liang obviously notes. So much for a seasoned warrior, then again you were really just sitting

- it isn't until he walks behind you a bit, realizing that there is a reason why you're not getting up

- he'd see your hands failing to cover a hole that was right over the middle of your pants

- then, he'd see the bit of fabric that's being held by a splinter in the wooden floor of the room. he'd catch a glimpse of your panties, the color not all too difficult to miss

- "Do you think we can salvage this?" you'd ask him. Kuai Liang would give it to you straight

- "I do not believe I can, dove..." Kuai Liang says softly, kissing your forehead as an additional apology

- this is probably the most awkward situation in your life. since the pants were stuck to the ground, and you didn't want to rip it anymore, Kuai Liang basically carries you out of your pants

- with the help of a handmaid that held your pants legs down, Kuai Liang carries you by your armpits as he gently guides you to shimmy, shake, and maneuver out of your pants

- he'd praise you, a lot. things like "good job" and "thank you for listening to me" or "you did a great job listening", it'd make you very happy despite the loss of a good piece of clothing

- Kuai Liang would also order you new pants. you didn't even get to mention it before Kuai Liang had sent another handmaiden out to a nearby village to find similar, if not, the exact same pants as the ones you ripped

- and the gentleman he is, he would not speak of this day ever again. however, every time he sees you in those pants, he will chuckle to himself

- so in reality, he was speaking about it, just nonverbally

Tomas Vrbada / Smoke Friendship Headcanons

Note(s) : I'm still learning how to write about his character, so criticisms are appreciated.

If we're talking Lin Kuei, Tomas is probably the best option for a mentor because he's not as strict and, uh, scary as Bi-Han, and even less serious than Kuai Liang, although that's not hard because he's so responsible.

But, that doesn't mean he'll let you slack off.

Tomas has a schedule, which includes waking up extremely early, most likely 6 AM, getting dressed and having breakfast in the span of a few minutes, you're expected to be at training for at least 7 AM. Then you train until lunch, around 1 PM, which lasts until 2 PM and then you train until dinner, around 6PM.

He expects you, and everybody else who trains under him, to follow that schedule. He can accept a few excuses, injuries making it harder to get dressed, mental issues, maybe you were just really hungry and accidentally spent too long eating, whatever the case, he lets you off with a warning most of the time.

But if it becomes repeated behaviour you're going through more gruelling training for a week, only Bi-Han at that point can get you out of it, and everybody knows he won't.

He retains a friendly and casual relationship outside of your training, inviting you with his brothers to dinner, which is usually less than once a month. They're usually at Madame Bo's or another tea house, and he's usually the one paying.

You both talk while he trains you, mostly about other Lin Kuei members and their performance / behaviours. Smoke won't trash talk, but he will sometimes indulge in gossip. 'Did you hear about the new recruit who tried to fight Bi-Han?' 'They did what?!'

Even when you're fighting with more seriousness, he's still cracking a friendly joke here and there. Probably something about ice, fire, or smoke.

Speaking of, if you don't like puns about smoke, don't even talk to this guy. He somehow knows every pun in existence that even slightly relates to it, Bi-Han and Kuai Liang are so tired of them they both just leave whenever he starts with one.

He adores if you match his energy, you two bounce back with constant puns that you forget training and leave Bi-Han to scold you two.

Tomas already has a strained relationship with Bi-Han, the man doesn't view him as a brother, let alone squeal, even though that's all Smoke wants from him. He doesn't mean to burden you with his issues, but sometimes he might ask 'Do you think I'm deserving of being a Lin Kuei?'

He won't stop being friends with you if Bi-Han doesn't like you, but maybe he will if Kuai doesn't, he looks up to Scorpion and views him as a major influence in life. But, the likelihood of Kuai ever actually telling him he doesn't like you is low, so, you're all good.

Given how the Lin Kuei works, I think you'd also have to train under his brothers or others in the clan once and a while, but mainly under him. He probably has other students to train, and so he's not always free for casual talk or sparring because he has others to mentor.

I'd say, for a guess, he most likely gets at least a day off, if not, breakfast, lunch and dinner is probably a time where he's free to at least go to a restaurant for food with you.

Shirai Ryu Tomas is different. While before he had maybe one day off, now he's always free because of how there's almost no recruits, only Hanzo and a few other kids who didn't have a good situation before the clan formed.

You'd most likely help the younger ones, and maybe have an 'assistant' role when teaching, the training is fairly lighter because they're just kids, but any adults or teens will have the same training as you, with a tighter schedule that you have to help maintain.

He has more free time to just... Hang around basically, he's always inviting you to have food with Kuai or his friends, like Johnny, Syzoth and most other members of the Kast, he's a big fan of helping you out with tasks.

Tomas will enjoy cleaning, for example, he expects you to help him obviously, especially if it's your room or armour he's helping clean. But, he enjoys it because it's productive and he gets to spend time with you.

Smoke also loves when you do things like that for him! Especially cooking, he's not... The best at it, so he appreciates when you make food after a long day of training and doing small missions for Liu Kang.

He doesn't touch the kitchen. Don't make him go near it.

He might try and teach you Czech or Chinese, if you don't know either already, this totally isn't just so when you're in crowded areas you can talk to each other without people listening, what are you talking about?

Although, it took him years to learn Chinese, so he understands if you find it too difficult and don't want to learn, that won't stop him from muttering words under his breath when he's annoyed.

He's not the biggest fan of hugs, don't get me wrong, he absolutely will if you ask him or he needs it, but he doesn't think he's ever been hugged since he was a kid, so it's just a bit unfamiliar.

Smoke likes holding your hand though, not only will you not get lost in crowds, but you can have friendly contact without it being too much for either of you.

Never ask him for relationship advice, if you want a wingman, look the other way. His love life consists of nothing, a barren desert, and he prefers to keep it that way.

✦ headcanons w/ liu kang, kung lao, raiden, lin kuei brothers, johnny cage, kenshi takahashi, shang tsung, havik, & syzoth

a/n: My brain was thinking really hard on how they'd actually be in a haunted maze and this is the best I came up for the first half! Part 2 will include the mk women too!!!

Liu Kang ➤ He finds the attraction somewhat amusing. However he does not find it scary. Being a god has trained him to become wise and undeterred to such things, but he does enjoy your company and how you push him from behind so he could lead. It even boost his ego a little, feeling your hands cling to him with a small smile on his face.

Kung Lao ➤ He talked a big game, claiming that he'd protect you and that you can cling to him. However, deep down inside he is actually afraid. Will he show it or admit it? Probably not, but his hand does clench whenever a scare actor jumps out. When you guys reach the end, he puffs out his chest. "See babe? Wasn't scary at all."

Liar.

Raiden ➤ He was pushed to the front and admitted he was a bit nervous. He does get scared, but is extremely nice about it. Saying things like "Woah, you really got me there!" or "That costume is really. . .realistic." And he's okay with people clinging to him, he feels better knowing that you can be safe around him. Raiden is a sweet boy so he really enjoys the concept of Halloween, he finds it very fun and a great way to hang out with others.

Bi-Han ➤ He is. . . unamused. His face is grumpy throughout the whole thing and when people try to scare him, he just kind of stares with a raised brow. He charges through the maze without an ounce of fear, dragging you behind him because he wants to get this whole thing over with.

"Did you have fun?" You ask him.

"No."

Kuai Liang ➤ Like a father who finds it fun, but isn't really scared by it. He'd laugh in amusement every time someone jumps out and he has an arm protectively around you. He's heard of Halloween before, but never really experienced it in his younger days, so truthfully, he liked it when you dragged him along to the event. Of course, you did it only to use him as a shield, but Kuai Liang was okay with it.

"Are these truly supposed to scare people?" He'd ask, grinning at you.

Tomas Vrbada ➤ Took some convincing to get him to even go in. He tried his best to make excuses because yes, he was afraid, but more of Bi-Han's opinion. However, Kuai Liang told him it was okay and to have fun. So it resulted in the two of you both clinging to each other throughout the whole thing, screams leaving your throats every time something happened. Even though Tomas was scared shitless, he enjoyed the absolute thrill it gave him. He never got the chance to enjoy the simple pleasures of just being scared and having fun so he loved it in the end.

Johnny Cage ➤ "You go in first." He says.

"No, you go in first."

"You're being a pussy."

"Says you."

You and him ended up going in at the same time faking confidence and ended up clinging to each other in fear. You guys screamed the loudest screams you've ever scrumpt (Ik this is not a real word) and even ended up trying to push open a pull door. The scare actors were very entertained by you two to say the least.

Kenshi Takahashi ➤ He can't see, but was happy to be there as you helped him walk through the maze. He did get spooked by the random sound effects and louds screams they did so being blind didn't make him miss out on the maze entirely.

In the beginning though, he thought it was childish, saying "Really? You want me of all people to go in with you?" But he had fun nonetheless. He didn't outright say it though because he did not want to seem soft.

Shang Tsung ➤ He thought it was a waste of time, childish, and stupid. Did he go in though? Reluctantly, he did. He would get scared, but would be irritated by it. Huffing like the sassy man he is and rolling his eyes every time they managed to spook him.

"That was ridiculous, but the contraptions in there did give me some great inspiration."

. . .yeah, please don't ever show him the "Saw" films.

Havik ➤ An absolute menace. He laughs every time they try and scare him and sometimes he screams back just to see if he can spook them too. Most of the time he does because he not only screams, but tears off his limbs to terrify them even more.

"Earthrealmers are scared so easily." He chuckles in the most villain way possible.

Loves it because all he can hear are the screams of people and the decorations were pure chaos. Although he is a little upset that they aren't real. Why can't you just use real human corpses and skeletons? They're easy to get. . . to him at least.

Syzoth ➤ He was always very aware of his surroundings so don't blame him if he's a bit defensive the entire time. You had to reassure him that they wouldn't actually attack him and even if did understand, he'd still remained cautious. Even so, the maze did manage to spook him several times. Eventually, he eased into the concept of the holiday and began to enjoy himself. It was also a perfect place for him to be in his natural form, everyone complimenting him on his "costume". It made the zaterran happy as he gazed at the decorations in curiosity and awe.

Smoke x Reader headcanons/stuff

• He's very cuddly, especially when the two of you are alone. Tomas loves wrapping his strong arms around you, holding you close and feeling your warmth. He wants you to feel safe and loved in his presence.

• He'll surprise you with random gifts. Clothes you've been looking at, little keychains with your favorite thing on it, snacks and drinks he knows you can't go without. Especially if he's been busy with Lin Kuei duties, he'll have a care package ready for you the next time the two of you are together (and, if you're down, another package 😉).

Started as a list of Headcanons, but at some point, it became a small story about Harumi and her past.

The Shirai family was known to be a family of masters. Masters who had trained generations of legendary warriors.

The Shirai women were the most talented fighters, so talented they had caught the attention of another realm. More specifically, Outworld.

The Umgadi invited the Shirai women to train with them and share their skills.

Harumi also was taught the ways of the Umgadi. She was trained by Li Mei. Tanya was her classmate (they used to gossip and discuss who they thought was the prettiest princess, Tanya was very insistent it was Mileena).

The Shirai women were also talented herbalists, healers actually. Plenty of warriors owned them their lives.

Queen Sindel herself had granted the Shirai access to her gardens and their unique specimens of plants. Plants that, when mixed properly, granted miraculous healing properties!

In Outworld, these magical concoctions were seen as blesses. In Earthrealm, however, they were seen as witchcraft, and it did not take long till the Shirai women were deemed as witches.

The Shirai did not let it affect them. They kept their alliance with the Umgadi and Outworld, and they kept fabricating and sharing their concoctions made with Outworld's exotic flora.

They didn't stop helping the Earthrealmers either, even though their assistance wasn't always welcomed nor appreciated as it should.

They didn't stop looking after Earthrealm, but they did grow more careful. From a young age, Harumi was told to be cautious of the outsiders. They did not understand the world as well as they did. Did not understand the power a Shirai woman held.

Harumi was not secluded nor forbidden to interact with the world outside, but she had to be careful. She was taught to be up-to-date with technology, and during most of her childhood, her friends were online.

Her friends would come and go. One day they would log off and never talk to her again. Only one friend remained through all her life, a Chinese boy named Kuai Liang.

They met on a forum online, discussing fictional characters from some random TV show. Then they moved to MSN, where they would talk every day about everything.

Kuai was there for her on her best days and on her worst days. He was a great listener. He would hear her talk about her favourite book, Dune, for hours and hours. He would also listen and comfort her every time she came home, angry and frustrated, for being once again called a witch.

It took her a couple of years to actually build the courage to tell him why she was constantly called witch. She told him the women of her family had "a magical touch," and they could turn any plant into a magical healing potion.

She expected Kuai to disappear after that, to call her insane, or worse, join those who thought she was a witch. But he only told her that he understood. He told her he was cursed. He told her he had literal fire running through his veins while his entire family had ice.

He was different from others, as she was. They bond grew stronger, and whenever they needed an escape, they would seek each other's company.

When they were together, they did not feel alone, out of place. They did not feel like curses or freaks. They felt like they belonged.

As she grew up, Harumi's family started to fade. Her grandparents, aunts, and her beloved parents. Her mother lived a great part of her life as a Umgadi warrior and was buried as such. It was quite a comfort that she got to be buried among the people who loved and accepted her as she was.

When Harumi returned to Earthrealm, she found herself completely alone. The last Shirai. She expected to be alone as she grieved, but a certain boy had other plans.

Kuai Liang had only visited her a couple of times. When he managed to teleport himself to her home in secret from both their families.

He started visiting her more often. There was no one left to keep their relationship in secret from anyway.

Years later, he told her his father was ill, and she offered to heal him. If she could visit him, she was certain she could heal him.

Kuai Liang's older brother, Bi-Han, was adamant in not letting her come. She tried to slip some medicines, but Bi-Han had caught her. He came to her home and told her that though her services were appreciated, they were not necessarily.

"It's almost like you want him to die," she dared say. He was difficult to read, but she could swear she saw pain in his eyes. "He lived a good life, worthy of a warrior, there's no reason to prolongate it," was his answer. He carelessly threw the medicine on her table and left.

She did not hear from Kuai from that day on.

Months later, she heard rumours of a new Grandmaster taking over the Lin Kuei. But heard nothing of Kuai Liang.

Then she heard rumours of disagreements between the new Grandmaster and his second in command, and that was the closest she had heard of Kuai Liang.

She heard rumours of a threat from Outworld and the Lin Kuei conspiring in favour of that threat.

She heard of a war so big that went beyond their realms. She heard of Champions ascending.

She heard the Lin Kuei would no longer assist Earthrealm, they would not be against it, but wouldn't fight for it anymore.

And only then did she hear of Kuai Liang. When he was practically on her doorstep. He had made it to Japan, along with his brother, Tomas Vrbada. They were being hunted down for treason. They needed help. They needed to be saved. And she saved them without an ounce of hesitation.

When Kuai and Tomas started to live with her, it was, honestly, quite awkward. She had grown used to an empty house, and Kuai Liang showing up after months of silence certainly didn't help.

She was not angry at him though, and she still cared for him deeply. One night she would offer to prepare a concoction for the huge scar on his face. It would not make it disappear, of course, but it would help with the pain.

After taking a couple weeks to heal, the former Lin Kuei brothers would start their mission to assemble a clan that would replace the Lin Kuei as part of Earthrealm's defences. Harumi offered to help. And before Kuai could protest, she reminded him of the long history of her family as trainers of legendary champions. She had the experience they only dreamed to have.

The first attempts were a failure, partly because Harumi was rather demanding. She wouldn't train anyone, wouldn't accept anyone. Her students had to be fully committed, if they weren’t they did not even have to bother staying.

Meanwhile, Kuai was worried about his brother. Wondering how he was doing on his own. It was then that he learned that Harumi had something akin to a spy.

Bi-Han did not allow Harumi to send medicines to his father, but allowed her to send it to someone else. Cyrax had recently transitioned, and Harumi's concoctions were of great help! Harumi would willingly deliver her the medicine without any cost, but Cyrax insisted on doing something in return, so Harumi asked: "Keep us informed of Bi-Han’s wellbeing"

Being up-to-date with Bi-Han’s condition certainly eased Kuai Liang's heart. His mood increased greatly, and he started to act more like himself. More like the person Harumi fell in love with years ago.

It was no secret that there was something between the two, but distance always made it difficult to figure it out. Now, sharing the same roof, it all became clearer. They were in love, and slowly and carefully, they started to act of these feelings...

One night, Tomas brought a guest to her home. He insisted that their guest was a child, but Harumi and Kuai could tell from first glance he was an adult, at least 20, but seemingly younger due to malnourishment.

Harumi couldn't quite explain, but there was something about this guest, this Hanzo Hasashi figure. Something... familiar! She felt as if they had already met, but not on this life, no, more likely in another...

It's hard to say that Bi Han treats you any differently... If he's even interested in this kind of thing in the first place. But it's not that he completely brushes you off, either—if you don't pay attention, you'll miss the way he looks at you despite his icy exterior, or the subtle things like a little extra care and/or consideration he does that he wouldn't normally do for anyone else. It's just that he wants to keep things under wraps as much as possible due to the lack of a title further than 'friends-with-benefits' between you two. Jealousy? Yes. If you end up trying to date and abandon him (so he puts it), he'll be so upset that he'll confess. You two will end up in a relationship... Someday.

Tomas will make it look like you two are in a relationship. Of course, you two really aren't—just see each other in the confines of a bed. That doesn't stop Tomas from being doting, though, and it makes certain people question whether or not you two are dating or more. One cannot so simply just say 'we're fucking with no title on', so he just meekly denies that you two are dating. It seems like he has a crush at the very least. Jealousy, yes, but very silently—you wouldn't know until much much later. The type to ask 'what are we?' when you are innocently doting back.

Bi Han likes to think pretend he's laying claim to you whenever he's fucking you into the mattress, but he has to remind himself when he's done he's not actually yours. Ironically, however, he's the one to remind you that you two aren't in a relationship whenever he thinks you're moving or acting too much like you're in one [with him]—he won't admit it, but he kind of likes it. It spurs him on to make sure you can't walk later. He won't initiate cuddles or aftercare, but he's incredibly responsive when you do. You eventually catch on, and it becomes a necessity at that point. Bi Han gets sulky if you don't.

Tomas focuses more on you than himself, but he makes sure to satisfy himself at least once before the whole endeavor ends. He's gentle if you've had a bad day, and he's rough if you're feeling particularly pent up—either way, you're getting your worth and more in the end. And, he won't say it, but he also likes to pretend that you two are in a relationship. But unlike the former, it slips a 'few times' that the person he's shoving his dick in isn't actually his significant other. It gets to him sometimes and he lies awake contemplating if asking you to become permanently his is a mistake, while he draws delicate circles on the crux of your back.

maybe he happens upon an orphaned child and the child gravitates towards him, marveling at his cryomancy with such innocent joy--something bi-han himself hadn't experienced in a long time, both in regards to general wonder and joy and the appreciation of his powers outside of violence

he remembers when they three were children and bi-han would make shapes with the ice for them, as if resizing a snowflake to better see the details, or give them ground to slide around on

there'd scarcely been time for that once bi-han was old enough to train it as a skill, more for employment than enjoyment, and beyond the flashes of kuai liang using his pyromancy for dance, to light himself up in a dark room and they'd trace the afterimages of his jumps and kicks with their eyes (he finally old enough to use his powers outside of battle and not injure anyone doing so),

beyond tomas showing off what he'd learned for magic, disappearing and reappearing behind them just to snake his arms around them and bury his face affectionately into the back of their necks,

there'd be no time for anything but the defense of earthrealm (whenever that time would actually come), no time for anything but waiting, training, and tradition

and in his anger over that, in his actions and intentions both justified and unjustified, he lashed out at his brothers, specifically telling tomas he was not truly lin kuei

it's not as if he'd never cared for tomas (just as it's not as if tomas had never cared for bi-han) but in bi-han's mind, for tomas to prioritize something bi-han thought was suffocating was like getting spat at, being told your perception of what you've experienced wasn't bad enough to turn your back on it

he wouldn't put up with kuai liang's support of it either but for tomas--someone who had the choice to involve himself in the lin kuei's mission instead of having it forced upon him--to try and lecture bi-han meant bi-han would easily remind him of his place, intending to tell him it wasn't his business to disapprove of bi-han's criticism--

not to imply he wasn't truly their brother

so it feels wrong to now take this child as his own, without having admitted and explained that mistake to tomas, but making amends begins as the universe wills it, not just when one feels ready for it

or, if it's your personal hc + OC or self-insert, this happens between him and his partner. either one finds the child and both try to provide them with whatever they need but when their parents cannot be found or are revealed to have passed, they have no choice but to continue caring for the child--despite bi-han's uncomfortable, awkward protestations

"we cannot care for every orphan who crosses our path" despite the fact that, given the lin kuei's wealth, numbers, and land ownership at this time, they very much could,

despite the fact that this is the first instance of it ever occurring and that the lin kuei is not stalled by the appearance of one child,

despite the fact that there are enough people within the lin kuei who could and would share responsibility for this child--every elder medic without children, every young trainer still considering it--

that the responsibility would not solely--or even remotely--fall to bi-han

but he feels it does anyways because in his mind, taking tomas in was one of his father's few acceptable decisions

because he wants this child separated from violence and crushing responsibility and hardship and the best way to do that is to keep track of that himself

because seeing his partner so friendly and bright and... silly even, inventing games and marveling at simple joys, like the resilient grass stretching through the snow, and having adult conversation with someone unable to follow, continuing on as if a mutual understanding is occurring,

sparks in bi-han this urge for domesticity, however fleeting, that he'd never properly realized around his father (kind but too involved in the well-being of others, never properly taking time for himself, that overly self-sacrificial nature poisoning his children)

or his mother (who he preferred for her sharp tongue and guiltless pleasures but felt distanced from in that inability to understand his own desires and do as he pleased, in that she loved her food, her drink, her midnight walks, and indulged so joyously, indulged in a way that made others recognize her humor and personality--whereas he takes and takes and remains bitter about it)

Some HCs of mine that document the lives of Kuai and Tomas as children in the Lin Kuei. :) -When Tomas first arrived at the Lin Kuei temple at around ten years old, he was scared shitless. He had no idea where he was or why he was here. -Unable to speak or understand Chinese at the time, Tomas usually kept to himself. He would do his best to isolate himself from others. That was until he met Kuai Liang. -The two met when Kuai tried to talk to him during training. Despite the strong language barrier, he felt somewhat comforted by him. Perhaps it was because Kuai was the only other member around his age. -To try and make Tomas feel better about his situation, Kuai would try to do fun things like build snowmen with him. He would wow Tomas with his cryomancer abilities, and engage him in snowball fights. -Kuai’s efforts paid off, and he and Tomas forged a strong friendship. -A little while later, when Tomas was fluent enough to hold a conversation, he would tell Kuai about himself. They would spend as much time as they could talking, Tomas using this as a chance to improve his Chinese -After a few months had progressed, their relationship was practically unbreakable. -Tomas was no longer timid and shy. He began to show his wild side much more, often pulling Kuai into his mischievous schemes such as sneaking out or pulling pranks. -Kuai would do his best to help Tomas with his Chinese. Despite Tomas catching on and learning the language quickly, he was still prone to mistakes. -One time Tomas threw a smoke bomb at Bi Han as a joke, and Kuai defended him when Bi Han tried to kick his ass. -When being taught by their teachers, they would do their best to help each other excel in particular fields and areas. -Often times they would experiment with their powers, competing to see who was stronger and faster. -Sometimes when one of them was anxious or nervous, the other would hold their hand until they calmed down. -The pair would tell each other everything. From secrets to jokes, and training to feelings. Despite the showcasing of emotions being frowned upon in the Lin Kuei, Kuai and Tomas never hesitated to tell each other how they felt or if they ever needed a shoulder to cry on. -Sometimes when Bi Han was away on a mission, Kuai would sneak into Tomas’s room to cuddle so that he wouldn’t feel lonely. They didn’t think much of it- just two best friends comforting each other. Both of them felt secure in each other’s arms, unbeknownst to the fact that their relationship would blossom into something much more later on in life.
