Games Should Stop Gendering Clothing

One of the common issues I have with games with clothing options is that cloth is very often gender exclusive. As if magically my ability to put on fabric is limited by the chromosomes I was birthed with. 

First off it just makes sense, you have more choices with no new models if you allow for men and woman to wear any piece of cloths. Maybe some of it won’t look good in the designers eyes but if someone thing the 50′s house wife outfit would look rocking on their muscle bound orc barbarian then they now have that choice. Instead of going woman get 30 choices and men get 30 choices you say everyone gets 60 choices and bam you are golden. Increasing the number of outfits in a game only makes sense since people love to play the numbers game and this is the easiest way to do that.

Secondly, it is good for kids to have the option. One of the biggest reasons companies do this is because maybe the parents will see their kid dress as the opposite sex and think Nintendo made their kid trans. That is just not how it works, science says that’s wrong and if your kid picks cloths of another sex it doesn't mean anything about them ether because cloths don’t magically shift sex as much as some might want that to be the case. I would love to see a parent flip out because their kid CHOSE to wear a dress in a video game then sue the sims about it. This isn't even homosexuality or something, this is simply putting on cloths (I totally intend to write about gay and games in the future). These imaginary parents who moderate what the kids are playing, then see that there kid put on a article of clothing from the other sex, then got angry, then started a game burning session in their church, then sewed the company  have no legal basis. Maybe you get a parent to go I’ll never buy this series again but come on now, I don’t think the choice for a little girl to wear pants is going to be anything but an excuse from someone who was already intending to ban video games from their house hold.  They can’t sue you and it’s very unlikely it effects one sale, plus companies have shown they don’t care about appealing to a minority of players any how, am I right, eh, eh.

 Third point is that style changes and you very much so date your game by limiting cloths to X or Y when you can have a game that is more timeless by allowing everything to be worn by everyone. It wasn't that long ago when woman didn't really wear jeans and now it’s very common. If Jeans were assigned as male cloths then blame your limiting what is very common practice now out of your notion that X cloths only belongs to Y sex. Simply saying X is only for boys or Q is only for girls really limits the point of having cosmetic cloths in the first place. That free expression of style, fashion isn't our friends, no fashion is danger. Fashion being danger means it’s ever changing, ever adapting, ever changing. Make up use to be something mostly men wore, powdered wigs were all the rage and dress like outfits were worn by both sexes.  So if I think the Pokemon contest outfit for males is the better outfit my character should sure as hell be able to wear it.  I mean their are tons of situations where the character creator may work better for one sex to look more like the person you envisioned. Making Jasper from Steven Universe on most already a bit sexist character creators would be near impossible by selecting female. So to get a feminine outfit on a less feminine body we would need the option to cross dress even if we all fit in the binary. 

Last but for sure not least, who the hell are you hurting? Who are you hurting by allowing people who may have a none binary gender identity who want to play as one sex while using another sexes clothing. How does it hurt the company to help these minority gamers out. The way that clothing is generally designed in video games is simply apply X outfit to Y model when selected, it takes extra work to block off characters from being able to wear it. It means they are actively saying “you shouldn't wear clothing from another sex, we tell you what is acceptable wear.” Even if you are cis gendered (male who has male body, female who has female body) would you be happy if a game just told you that your favorite outfit was not allowed on your character. You might have not know going into the game that this amazing outfit existed that you wanted way more then it’s opposite sex equivalent. It’s stupid to expect a player to have to some how magically find out every outfit in a game that is gender exclusive and select their cloths via that method instead of just wearing what they want. 

In conclusion game designers let people wear what they want, just let them do it, come on.
