“I believe that sexuality is a spectrum and I think Quentin falls somewhere in the middle of that, and I don’t think it’s something that— I think he’s anxious about a lot of things in his life and the fact that he’s not quite anxious about that is a little bit remarkable, and something that I’m choosing to lean into.”

worst part of original writing is getting hung up on your own lore. i miss fanfiction where i could look it up on a wiki and get five answers and ignore them all to make up my own thing because canon is stupid.

#what was I saying about the show consistently making terrible declarations about the story they’re trying to tell…#only this time it was in reverse! mixin’ it up in advance of their shitty Grand Declaration grand finale(s)!#[no but seriously the magicians had a major ‘tell don’t show’ problem where their explicitly stated themes rarely if ever matched up with#the actual choices the characters made.#and it especially sucks because with few exceptions they’re REALLY good at showing without telling wrt characterization and certain dynamics#it’s part of what makes it so great for my ongoing fannish interest but so awful for my narrative frustration tolerance#even now lol]

That got less touching as you went. The Magicians | S03E12: The Fillorian Candidate (2018)
“After you,” Janet said. “Oh, fuck off.” If you rode with a queen, the queen must enter the Queenswood first. That was the rule. The Magician’s Land (The Magicians, #3) by Lev Grossman
#the first gif’s slow soft slightly aloof mostly gentle expression is prototypical#he is so gorgeous

hey you know what’s still sending flames up the sides of my face? is that Penny23 makes this big life-changing human/or goddess choice for Julia in the season 4 finale and he’s not even her boyfriend. He’s not even her boyfriend! Or her partner, or husband, or even long-term hookup with feelings, or anyone who would reasonably be expected to act as medical proxy for an unconscious person when important decisions have to be made. You know who would be a better choice to make that call? Lipson, as her doctor, or Fogg, as the guy basically still in charge of the school she’s in, whatever the Librarians think, who has a history with her and some paternal feelings floating around. Quentin. Kady. Hell, Margo, Josh and Alice, while only barely friends with Julia, still have known her longer than Penny23.
The in-show universe reason why it’s up to him is that he’s the one standing there looking extra worried and having a lot of feelings, and Brakebills as an institution has the ethical standards of a blueberry pancake. The out-of-show writers reason is for the dramaz. I know this. It’s just that in a final two episodes that manage to pull a bunch of sexist bullshit on nearly all the main female characters, Julia’s big goddess/human decision (the decision which has been her only narrative arc, for the whole season!) getting delegated to ‘Guy who She’s Been Flirting With for a Few Months and has made Tentative Dinner Plans With’ is right at the top in terms of whatthefuckery.
#ICONIC POST(S)#still loathe Julia/23#could’ve been interesting#could’ve been fucked up in a good way#could’ve explored the differences in the timelines and the limits/expanse of love across multiverses#but instead we got……….

#the fillory details when you lay them all out [as I did while fic writing in 2020] do NOT work and they’re SO weird#I love every tiny bit of them
